David Briggs helmed a lot of successes as we have all noticed, though he also had some musicians that could have been among the greatest of their scenes. Kathi McDonald was another case of that. She should've had a better career, I mean, she replaced Janis Joplin in the band the latter fronted. Then again, she was constantly compared to her, which probably didn't do her many favours. For instance, Insane Asylum, her debut, sounds great, but I can understand why she was delegated to the session work. She's incredible, yet the similarity to Joplin – seriously, her voice is so much like Joplin's one find that uncanny – might have done her more harm than good. Sadly, I might add, Insane Asylum shows her to be a ferociously good singer.

11/22/22: It was 50 years ago this month, November 1972, Joni Mitchell would release her fifth album ‘For the Roses.’ For me Joni just gets better and better during this middle period of her music... this album, though still quiet, is much less spare than the ‘Blue’ predecessor. I mean several of these songs are still just Joni and her piano, but its production has a more ‘grand’ style... makes all of these poetic treats sound very important. Certainly the most famous track gleaned from this record is the single ‘You Turn Me On (I’m a Radio)’ which I’ll treat in its own blog post. However, the album track ‘Barangrill’ is nearly as good, and it seems like the music is only a guitar, cello and a flute, although I’m probably wrong about that... but her voice and the lyrics, very enjoyable. I think if you are a Joni Mitchell fan I would think you would like most of this record... it’s maybe four or five songs too much of the same music, but certainly not words. I like the track ‘Electricity’ and the title track is good too. Almost forgot about her bittersweet song about ex-bf James Taylor and his heroin addiction-- ‘Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire’... probably the most musically complex song on the record, almost jazzy (!). I’ll have to give this one a few more listens to see if I think it’s as good as it’s successor (which will be one of the last albums I’ll review).
