I think the biggest core problem with Houseki no Kuni that drags the rest of the series down is that Phos doesn’t achieve enlightenment. He has it forced onto him. And that is so incredibly not the same thing.
Phos doesn’t learn anything. He doesn’t grow or change organically. Every single change he undergoes is one forced upon him by the narrative. By the time of the hiatus, he’s been reduced so much that there’s literally nothing left of him. He doesn’t even recognize his old self or even know why he did anything in the first place. If this is meant to be symbolic of him giving up the material plain a la enlightenment, it fails because he never actually gave it up. He was violently kicked out of it by Aechmea.
When you get right down to it, Phos has no agency. He never accomplishes anything by his own will. Everything he accomplished was due to someone else’s manipulation. It goes beyond him failing everything. He’s just a pawn in somebody else’s game. Not only is that not exactly a compelling trait in a protagonist, it also goes against what enlightenment is supposed to be, doesn’t it? Based on the literature I’ve read, walking the Eightfold Path is supposed to be incredibly difficult. You have to devote yourself to it wholly. But instead of choosing to walk it, Phos was hustled along at gunpoint.
And even then, I’m not sure he actually did hold true to the Eightfold Path. Because the Eightfold Path is one of broadening compassion, but Phos only becomes more self-absorbed as the story unfolds, forgetting his promise to Cinnabar, shattering gems left and right, asking Sensei to pray “for me” when the prayer would affect everyone, etc.
The Buddha achieved enlightenment when he mediated under the Boddhi Tree for 48 days. Nobody forced him to do that. Nobody chained him to the tree or threatened his family if he didn’t. That’s something he chose to do. It was act of will. But this series sees Phos’s choices as irrelevant. Phos didn’t sacrifice himself for everyone else’s benefit, somebody else chose to sacrifice him. Neither Phos nor Aechmea are true Bodhisattvas because one was tricked, and the other did the tricking.
Maybe that’s the point. Maybe this whole story is meant to be a deconstruction of the journey toward enlightenment. But you can’t deconstruct something without holding true to what it is, and this manga (unless there’s something I’m missing) doesn’t even seem to understand enlightenment well enough to deconstruct it.
At any rate, “The Eightfold Path actually sucks lol” doesn’t seem worth it as a core theme.

ever since i can remember, i grasp
for falling cups of coffee, and
balloons that slip,
highs... people
(stay with me, please)
moments encased in memories encased in
tears
sweat
blood, slipping... careless
(stay with me, please)
somewhere, someplace
a man smiles under the boddhi tree
as leaves part from the branch

Thean Hou Temple is one of the oldest and largest temples in Southeast Asia. Southwest of the city, it is a popular tourist attraction and is located along Jalan Klang Lama. Overlooking the Federal highway, the six-tiered Buddhist temple is also known as the Temple of the Goddess of Heaven. Dedicated to Tian Hou, a goddess said to protect fishermen, the temple is also a shrine where many come to worship Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Built by KL’s Hainanese community in 1894, it is set on a hill and offers wonderful views of the city. Inside Thean Hou Temple is a modern Buddhist pagoda and plenty of Buddha images enshrined in the octagonal hall. There is also a statue of Tian Hou which sits between the Goddess of the Waterfront and the Goddess of Mercy. Additionally, statues of Guan Di (the God of War) and Wei Tuo contribute to incorporate elements of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism into its grandiose structure. The temple also features a Chinese medicinal herbs garden and a tortoise pond along with a well; beside the temple is a sacred Boddhi tree Thean Hou Temple’s structural design represents a successful combination of contemporary architectural style and traditional designs with intricate embellishments and ornate carvings and murals. The front entrance has a multi-arched gateway with red pillars, to symbolize prosperity and good fortune. Also, the temple has dragon-inspired columns and pagoda rooftops, and an extravagant prayer hall with three altars. A couple days I had a day of overwhelm and exhaustion. I had a sore throat, body aches. I said: oh dear what is it? I took an afternoon nap after listening to a yoga nidra. I woke up felt a bit better, meditated and for the 20 min of this sit I focused on loving kindness to myself. That evening I had my acting class, still a bit sticky, I chose to focus on the other parts of myself that were excited to be in class, to act, play, express. I cried, I yelled, I shook, I danced. I felt anger and separation. I cried again. Then we were guided to visualize our “favorite place”, honesty I have difficulties finding just one. Since studying Buddhism the idea of favorite is no longer so much part of my vocab, but I take myself to India, bc that is still my favorite place. I would visualize myself under the Boddhi tree, with my first teacher, hearing her voice, almost instantly feel at ease and more spacious inside. Well this last class I found myself at my last home in Brazil before we moved to the US. We lived there from 8-15yrs I believe. I loved that house, the backyard, the tree, we would run in and out, play outside, we had family lunches in a long wooden table in the back porch, we had a small strange pool, but we loved it, playing with the water hose. I’d forgotten about almost all of these memories until the class. As I found myself in my “fav place” my bedroom, the bed, pillows were all shades of pink (yep) I had so many stuffed animals and dolls. I remembered how much I loved that room, was when my mom first taught me to use eye liner, where I started hiding my bras after school, where I cried when I felt left out in school or bullied for not wanting to kiss a boy at a party. I loved cleaning and organizing after leaving it a wild chaos for about 3 days. (Still do that btw)That house is also where I heard/saw/felt my parents fight the most, where I told on my brother my smoking cigs outside school, where I screamed so loud alone, and stopped speaking my feelings to others, where I taught my lil brother how to tie his shoes as I walked him to school every afternoon. Where my dad waited up for me in the living room after a “night out”. Nitzavim: And the universe spun on….
Tumblr media
You stand this day, all of you, before the LORD your GOD—every man and woman of Israel…from the woodcutters to the water-drawers—to enter into the Covenant with the LORD your GOD…. And not with you alone do I enact this Covenant, with those who are standing with us this day, but also with those [future and past generations of Israelites] who are not standing with us this day…to study this Torah, and to perform it.
                                                    --Deut. 29:9-14 (translation mine)
A Report from Warsaw, Poland, during World War I:
There were a great many wagons and coaches parked, but with no drivers in sight. …A young Jewish boy showed me…to the shtibl (prayerhouse) of the Jewish wagon-drivers (Yiddish, balagoolas). [There were] two rooms: one filled with Talmud volumes, the other a room for prayer. All the drivers were engaged in fervent study and religious discussion…I found out…that all professions, the bakers, the butchers, the shoemakers, etc., have their own shtibl in the Jewish district, and every free moment [they can take] off from their work is given to the study of the Torah. And when they get together in intimate groups, one urges the other: ‘Zog mir ah shtickl Torah—Teach me a little Torah.’

The Talmud-Study Society of Galaxy Andromeda M31
  Sept. 25, 2736—22 Elul, 6502
As NASA Space Flight Engineer Mordechai Kahn eased through the tunnel of USS Space Cruiser Ticonderoga IV, its airlock doors hissed closed behind him. He was careful to touch and kiss the mezuzah that NASA Space Regulations (Section XXIII, Subset 432, Lines 6-9) required of all Jewish Personnel Religio-Capsules. Unlike earthly mezuzote, this one was permanently sealed in plastilex; it might not have been acceptable to the extremely religious, but it was necessary in space, so as not to allow alien microbes to devour  the parchment and vegetable-based ink.
As the only Jewish member of the Interstellar Expedition to Starform Epsilon 4943AA, and Conservadox at that, Mordechai could not let a day go by without performing the mitzvah-commandment of daily Torah study b’chavruta—with his study partners. As the only Jew on the Ticonderoga, he could not do this face-to-face, but Star Ship Command, based on the Moon (in the System containing Old Earth, which centuries of pollution and global warming had rendered uninhabitable; hence, all these expeditions to find new planets for humanity to colonize) had handily supplied him with a handy list of other practicing Jews who wished to remotely study Space Talmud. This enabled him to fulfill the mitzvah.
Mordechai knew also that there were interested gentile scholars: a Catholic monk and plant geneticist, Father William Mendel, on Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, would often participate when his schedule permitted. There was also a Buddhist, George Freeh Rinpoche, a lexicographer based on Pluto who was writing a Romulan-English lexicon, would “relax his mind,” as he put it, by joining in.
Mordechai enjoyed their insights, but he was happiest when he could effect an Einsteinian Hologram Linkup with Eliezer Bokospeichik, the youngest son of Grand Rabbi Menachem Mendel Bokospeichik, who was head of the Maldemer Chasidim, a sect that, after early sensing the ensuing destruction of Old Earth, had contracted with an Israeli aerospace firm to build a Space Ark large enough to float them to Mars. There, they engaged in converting the Martians, marrying them Jewishly, and raising their children in the faith. They were, sadly, finding it difficult to do so; at least, according to Jewish Law—the Martian Race had three genders.
Back over Epsilon, Mordechai eased into his Study Seat and belted himself in, put on his kipah-skullcap and pulled its elasto-band under his chin. To create the sensation of complete engagement with his study partners, his personal rebbe, Moshe Rochev-Kochav, head of the Otto Lilienthal Yeshiva, had ruled that he must learn under Deep Space conditions, without any artificial gravity. Mordechai donned his Hologram-Helmet and adjusted its View Screen to allow images of his study partners to appear. He was also praying to the Jewish God of all the Cosmos that his other chavruta-partner, Charlie Levine, a navigator on Starship Jules Verne VII, be available—Charlie had promised to change his work schedule to allow time for Torah.
Flicking at the panel of switches and dials before him, and noting the position of the brightest star in his corner of Andromeda M31, Mordechai sent out a homing signal to his chavruta, study partners. There was a soft humming, and then, a slight ringing noise as he made contact, first, with Eliezer—Mordechai muttered a soft prayer; Eliezer’s insights were really, well, insightful.
As for Charlie? Hmm—no luck, today. But, wait! Yes—no—the homing signal flashed into space, and found no receiver. Shoot. Oh, well.
“Eliezer, do you read me? Prepare for hologram-transmission,” said Mordechai.
“Up and running, Chaver Mordechai,” came Eliezer’s voice.
            “Coordinates two-two-zero-fourteen.”
            “I read,” said Eliezer.
            “And lock.”
The image of his chavruta-partner, Eliezer, appeared in Mordechai’s Hologram-Helmet viewfinder. Eliezer smiled: he was seeing Mordechai, as well.
            “Shalom Aleichem!”
            “Aleichem Shalom!”
“Nu, vosmacht ah Yid? (How’s a Jew doing?)”
“Not bad. Just lonely. Shall we begin?”
“Yes!—I’m on Talmud Kiddushin Chalal, the Tractate of Space-Marriage,Folio 2, Side One. I will read and translate, from the Sparamaic:
“’The 23rd Century Mishnah states: “A Venusian female organism may be acquired in five ways: via money—that is, Martian drachmae; a contract—etched only on the leaf of a Boddhi-tree; or coimplantment—by one other Venusian, male only. There are also the choices implanted via thought-processes: implant-mental-chip, General Electrons issue; Freedom of Will from the Creator. And she acquires herself back in two ways.
“The 24th Century Gemara explains: “Via money—that is, according to Plutonian Rabbi Lychus: a Plutonian drachma. According to Jupiterian Rabbi Hyle: a Jupiterian dinar. And she acquires herself back in two ways: through a writ of divorce, as enacted in a Space Command Jewish Bet Din Law Court, or through the Departure-from-Life-Form of her Male Counterpart.”
“Wow!” breathed Mordechai, “What an amazing piece of Talmud this is! What does New Rashi say?”
New Rashi was the commentary of one Rabbi Shinar ben Yisrael, a Mercury-born Jew-by-Choice who, stranded on Pluto’s moon Styx after his exploratory voyage crashed there back in 2527, had lots of time to write an extensive commentary on the entire Space Talmud, storing it on a Logo Drive and launching it back to Earth. It had become the Universal Space Talmud Commentary, noted both for its ease of usage and depth of knowledge. Rabbi Shinar, known by the acronym NewRashi, was regarded as the 26th Century’s Prince of Commentators.
“Well, let’s see,” said Eliezer, “how much time for Torah-study have you got?”
“At least five parsec-lengths,” said Mordechai.
“That should give us time to get up to the mental-chip section,” said Eliezer.
            “I love this!” said Mordechai.
“Hey, what does God say about Torah?” laughed Eliezer, far-off in the deep reaches of Space, “’It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who shall go off, and fetch it for us?”
“’Nor is it in the depths of the sea!’”Mordechai chimed in, “’It is as near as the nearest hologram-transmitter!’”
            And the universe spun on….

My lifelong spiritual awakening/rebirth; how God taught Adam his plan of salvation
How Do We Enter the Kingdom of God, Be Born Again, Converted or Spiritually Awakened?
Spiritual awakening/enlightenment/mysticism, to me are also known as conversion, spiritual rebirth or spiritual transformation and is the ultimate goal of any religion. Conversion literally means to turn around.  It is the positive result of an identity crisis. For various religious descriptions of conversion/awakening, see Jewish devekut https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devekut Buddhist Boddhi https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enlightenment_in_Buddhism, Islamic Sufism https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sufism and Hindu Moksha .https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moksha
Spiritual awakening/rebirth or conversion is both an event and a lifelong journey of discovery.  The conversion events are baptism by water, Spirit, and blood-a mighty change of heart.
The conversion journey is the lifelong daily process of coming to know and become like God and divine self by developing a personal relationship with God daily by sincerely and persistently conversing with God in prayer and scripture study. Then it includes following the thoughts and feelings God sends us daily by his Spirit like ideas of how to serve others and be more loving.
I like how Elder Bednar, an apostle today of Jesus Christ, compares the whole process of becoming born again to the steps required to make a pickle. "Through faith in Christ, we can be spiritually prepared and cleansed from sin, immersed in and saturated with His gospel, and purified and sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise—even born again."
Ye Must Be Born Again
https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2007/04/ye-must-be-born-again?lang=eng#p41
How God taught Adam and Eve his plan of salvation, how to become born again
To put it simply, God taught our first parents Adam and Eve in Moses 6:
"59 That by reason of transgression cometh the fall, which fall bringeth death, and inasmuch as ye were born into the world by water, and blood, and the spirit, which I have made, and so became of dust a living soul, even so ye must be born again into the kingdom of heaven, of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten; that ye might be sanctified from all sin, and enjoy the words of eternal life in this world, and eternal life in the world to come, even immortal glory.
60 For by the water ye keep the commandment; by the Spirit [aka 'fire'] ye are justified [receive a personal witness of  God's remission of your sins], and by the blood ye are sanctified [mighty change of heart and nature, becoming as a child, saint, purified heart with desires to do no more evil but to do good continually];
64 And it came to pass, when the Lord had spoken with Adam, our father, that Adam cried unto the Lord, and he was caught away by the Spirit of the Lord, and was carried down into the water, and was laid under the water, and was brought forth out of the water.
65 And thus he was baptized, and the Spirit of God descended upon him, and thus he was born of the Spirit, and became quickened [made alive] in the inner man [born of the blood, mighty change of heart/nature].
66 And he heard a voice out of heaven, saying: Thou art baptized with fire, and with the Holy Ghost. This is the record of the Father, and the Son, from henceforth and forever;
67 And thou art after the order [priesthood] of him [Jesus Christ] who was without beginning of days or end of years, from all eternity to all eternity.
68 Behold, thou art one in me, a son of God; and thus may all become my sons. Amen.
Wow. What a beautiful story of conversion! I can think of no better teacher than God himself to Adam and each of us by his Spirit.
Another way of describing gospel principles is this: "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."
Articles of Faith 1:4, Joseph Smith, Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints
https://www.lds.org/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?verse=4&lang=eng#p4
Here are 3 main parts I have learned of spiritual awakening/ conversion/rebirth from my experience
1. Personal relationship/revelation
Just before He suffered for us in Gethsemane during His intercessory prayer, Jesus said "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."
https://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/john/17?lang=eng Therefore, perhaps the most important part of spiritual awakening/rebirth and purification is the lifelong personal relationship building with God, getting to know God by conversing with God in mighty prayer & scripture study daily to build our faith in Christ for repentance and purification.
I think I first started really seeking that personal relationship with God when I was about 14 when my parents weren't able to take care of me because of divorce and my mom's mental breakdown. It's interesting how difficult times turn out to be positive because they turn our hearts to God. At that time I started reading the scriptures every day, specifically the Book of Mormon because someone recommended that to me to help me get through a difficult time. The Book of Mormon brought me peace, love, comfort, and joy like no other book could.
The seed of faith from reading the Book of Mormon grows up into a tree of eternal life, whose fruit is sweetest above all, full of grace, truth, love, joy, and peace to each of us personally. See Alma 32: 27-43
https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/32?lang=eng
Oh, the joy and beauty of Repentance! Repentance literally means a change of mind. With our free will we decide to sacrifice or give up the desire for a particular sin or sins. We plead to God for forgiveness, confess our sin to anyone else we may have offended and do our best to stop doing that sin. As we consciously decide to sacrifice sin(s) to know God, God can forgive our sin and purify and change our heart, which literally transforms our sinful desires into righteous desires.
And how joyful and beautiful is receiving forgiveness! It is the peace we feel when we are able to let go of our sins and embrace God's love. When I was 19 headed on a mission to share the gospel of faith, repentance, and baptism I remember not feeling worthy to teach because of my past sins, even though I tried hard to repent. Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is ourself.
Then I stumbled upon this verse: "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more." Hebrews 8:12
https://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/heb/8?verse=12&lang=eng#p12
That verse brought tears to my eyes; I was so happy and relieved because I knew at that moment, God was speaking sweet mercy and peace to me directly, through his Spirit from reading the scriptures.
Atonement is literally at-one-ment, meaning we make a conscious decision to sacrifice our fallen nature's will to sin and then embrace God's and our divine nature's will to do good and right. Our will, desires, and needs for us become God's will, desires and needs for us and his will for us becomes ours. We become one in mind and heart with God and each other because we become pure in heart. God is intimately aware of our hopes, fears, and dreams and has a special calling and plan for each of us personally to use our talents, dreams and experience to do good in this world.
And we can find out God's will for us each day. President Russell M. Nelson of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints said in April 2018:
"Follow the example of the Prophet Joseph. Find a quiet place where you can regularly go. Humble yourself before God. Pour out your heart to your Heavenly Father. Turn to Him for answers and for comfort.
Pray in the name of Jesus Christ about your concerns, your fears, your weaknesses—yes, the very longings of your heart. And then listen! Write the thoughts that come to your mind. Record your feelings and follow through with actions that you are prompted to take. As you repeat this process day after day, month after month, year after year, you will “grow into the principle of revelation.”

Update on the Boddhi tree 'Rama' after complete leaf removal on 9th May. It seems to have paused new leaf production. They all seem to do this, we have to work out how to stimulate it to get more leaves.
