The Cryptic Motif of “Three Hares with Conjoined Ears”
On the Heavenly Palace decorative patterns found in the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang from the late Northern dynasties are images with cryptic patterns, including Buddha's head, the Taotie beast, deer, animals copulating, three hares with conjoined ears, and also writings. This type of decorative pattern is cryptic and difficult to understand and may be closely related to the history of the popular Eastern iconology and divination philosophy from the Han and Wei dynasties and Emperor Wu of Northern Zhou's suppression of Buddhism. They are important references for studying the related history of this period.

This flower motif appers on the tombstone of Blume, who lived in Speyer or as she probably called it, Schpira. We know from the inscription on the stone that she was the daughter of the scholar Jacob, and she passed away on the 30th of December in 1365. It's a well preserved jewish tombstone that is almost 700 years old!! Wow!
Here the flower ornamentation appears as a symbol reference to the name, since Blume means flower in Yiddish and German. Symbols referring to the name are not uncommon on tombstones, and may also appear in the form of the lion (Löw or Juda), the bird (Tziporah or Feygl) or the deer (Hirsch or Tzvi).

Water coded characters but instead of being the calm, soft, healing one they're like an ocean; relentless and terrifying, always dragging things back into the heart of them and never surrendering it, like a rip, poisonous to any who intake to much of them, prone to tempest and storm.
Fire coded characters but instead of being erratic, emotional, 'fiery' and destructive they are like a hearth; a low constant heat, warm and inviting, nurturing to those around them, a focal point for family and gathering together, providing clarity and light and guidance in darkness, slowly but surely burning themself out in sacrifice for the comfort of those around them.

Trusting someone's ability to make judgments and decisions.

What's In An Obi? Part 9
On The First Day of Fun I present... a new obi! Yes, The Twelve Days of Fun are BACK for another year!
Image courtesy of Amy Kyoto. Owned By: Odamoto (小田本) in Gion Kobu Motif(s): Gion Matsuri Yamaboko (Floats) The Gion Matsuri (祇園祭), which runs each year from July 1st to 24th, is one of the biggest festivals in Japan, and the highlight of summers in Kyoto. The main draw of the festival each year is the Yamaboko Junko (山鉾巡行), the procession of the massive floats! In total there are 32 main floats: 9 Hoko (the massive 25m tall floats) and 23 Yama (the smaller 6m tall floats). Some are adorned with Chōchin (提灯), paper lanterns, that have various kamon on them (although the most popular one is that of Yasaka Shrine). The people on the floats wave Sensu (扇子), hand fans, as the procession makes it way down the streets of Kyoto. All three motifs can be seen in the obi above ^^
