Married on this day precisely 80 years ago (21 March 1945): fabled golden age Hollywood showbiz couple Humphrey Bogart (1899 – 1957) and Lauren Bacall (1924 – 2014). The venue: the dairy farm of Bogart’s close friend, author Louis Bromfield in rural Lucas, Ohio. Media scrutiny was intense: “maybe he’d like to photograph us fucking?” Bogart snapped about a particularly pushy Life photographer. As one newspaper trumpeted “Today’s the Day! The plot - matrimony. The cast of characters - languorous Lauren Bacall and merchant of menace Humphrey Bogart. The setting - Malabar, novelist Louis Bromfield’s 1,100-acre estate.” Bride Bacall (20) wore a modest but chic doeskin suit (relax, handwringing concern trolls: doeskin is a type of wool!) and clutched a bouquet of white orchids, while Bogart (45) opted for grey flannel. Bogart and Bacall, of course, embodied nonchalant cool (they were the film noir sensibility personified!). They were also staunchly committed to progressive politics. My favourite film the duo made together: Dark Passage (1947). Pictured: the couple snapped post-ceremony by Ed Clark.

A pin up style tip:
Reason to get the trench coat. Dramatic and unnecessary yes? That’s why you need it.
More specifically, it’s a classic and timeless layer. Unlined is perfect for spring and lined for winter layers, means no matter the season you are covered for simple glamour. Dita’s got the know how in black as opposed to its normally very famous tan look.

They’re a kind of garment that is alluringly gender non conforming They can be worn in a feminine way, a masculine way, androgynous way, etc. some have a feminine cut so you should be aware of that if thrifting. But who wouldn’t want to look like Bogie or Marlene? Just add suit or trouser to mix and stir. Sprinkle on styled hat to taste.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Audrey wore them, that’s it that’s the statement.

They’re a disguise. But more importantly a sexy one. If you can’t be bothered to dress up, pair them when sunnies and a scarf and your laundry day faux pas, hangover puffiness, or quick errand is now a chic moment. I’ve been known to run the dog out in next to nothing with a trench coat over. Keeping the sexiness alive one lazy moment at a time.
Tumblr media
If you’re into it throw in some black pumps and you’re unstoppable. If you’re not into it, don’t 💋
Brands to look for when shopping/ thrifting: LL Bean, Ralph Lauren, London Fog, Burberry,
To note:
- trench coats come in varying length, specify or check length when shopping online.
- lined=thicker, warmer// unlined = thinner, cooler
- not all are rain proof

Died ten years ago today: that ineffably feline and insolent Siamese cat-in-human-form, smoky-eyed and husky-voiced Golden Age Hollywood leading lady Lauren Bacall (née Betty Joan Perske, 16 September 1924 – 12 August 2014). Encyclopedia Britannica summarizes the imperious Bacall’s screen persona more succinctly than I ever could: “American actress known for her portrayals of provocative women who hid their soft core underneath a layer of hard-edged pragmatism.” (When I say “imperious”, that’s my diplomatic way of saying “notoriously temperamental and terrifying”). Of course, I love Bacall in the classic 1940s films noir she made with her husband Humphrey Bogart (To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo (1948)) and her great 1950s films like How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and Written on the Wind (1956). To her eternal credit, Bacall made gutsy, adventurous film choices late in her career, opting to appear in Dogville (2003) by Lars von Trier, Birth (2004), Paul Schrader’s The Walker (2007) and playing herself on TV’s The Sopranos (2006). (She was quoted as saying she dreamed of working with Pedro Almodovar). And her last-ever performance was a voice-over on an episode of Family Guy (playing a lecherous old lady hitting on Peter!). But hey, I’m perverse so my favourite Bacall performances are in Young Man with a Horn (1950) (as Kirk Douglas’ icily self-possessed lesbian socialite wife) and the schlocky exploitation films Shock Treatment (1964) and The Fan (1981). And La Bacall’s 1980s High Point instant coffee TV commercials (“deep-brewed FLAVAH!”) are camp sacred texts! Pictured: portrait of Bacall by Jack Mitchell, New York, 1966.

What do you mean old Rex isn't in the Ahsoka show? He's been stowed away on her ship as her permanent booty call, much to Sabine's chagrin.
Huyang is into it though.
For Rexsoka Monthly's June prompt, It's Not What It Looks Like. Crossposted on my AO3.

William J Mann has a new 2024 book on Bogart and Bacall. He also wrote The Contender: The Story of Marlon Brando, and How To Be a Movie Star: Elizabeth Taylor in Hollywood.
The cover image is not from To Have and Have Not or The Big Sleep, but Dark Passage (1947), their third film together. There are no pictures of Howard Hawks in the picture section, only John Huston. There's not much new after Howard Hawks' biography, The Grey Fox of Hollywood, and Lauren Bacall's autobiography, By Myself.
