Space Ghost Coast to Coast #62: “Warren” | September 4, 1998 | S05E05
One of the more interesting episodes, and one I’ve gone back and forth on opinion-wise. The first time I ever encountered it, I was slightly baffled. I thought perhaps they were changing Space Ghost’s format. It’s purpose becomes much clearer when you’ve sat with it for a bit.
This one starts off with Space Ghost, Zorak, and Moltar hanging out in Space Ghost’s apartment. (Zorak is hilariously reclined in what’s apparently the only seat in Space Ghost’s living room while Space Ghost and Moltar stand around him. I’m guessing they were limited by using pre-existing art, and they had drawings of Zorak sitting in Space Ghost’s recliner from the Boobookitty episode). They are watching The Warren Show. We don’t see the titular Warren at first; we only hear him off camera. His guest is an alternate version of Space Ghost, with Gary Owen’s voice coming out of his mouth. The “real” Tad Ghostal is flummoxed by this imposter, and takes Moltar and Zorak on a trip to go confront Warren for having him on the show. He also wants to get to the bottom of who this imposter really is.
Space Ghost and friends not only find Warren (who turns out to be a live-action potted plant, Ficus for Congress eat your heart out), but also Space Ghost’s Gary-Owens-voiced replicant. The replicant momentarily glitches out and you can see the live-action footage of the Gary Owens interview they conducted for this episode. That’s what makes this episode so unique; not only do they break format from talk show to action-adventure parody, but they also recontextualize a live-action interview and transform it into a meta drama about a fictional character torn asunder when different versions of himself collide with one another.
The true nature of this episode is probably along these lines: this interview with Gary Owens, the original voice of Space Ghost (as well as the announcer for Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in, hence him saying “sock it to me” late in the episode), was probably not ideal to use in a more straight-forward episode. He couldn’t help being meta in a more cutesy way, and resulting talk show episode would probably be cloying, plodding, reverent, all the things this show should NEVER BE. A traditional Space Ghost episode with this interview would probably come off like Tracy Zooms In. Marvelously, they make it work by bending over backwards and breaking the entire show to do it.
It would reasonably follow that in the spirit of breaking the show, they came up with one of their anti-television stunts; this episode originally aired as a 36 minute uninterrupted presentation in which the episode itself loops three times before cutting to closing credits. The episode is a recursive infinite loop if you want it to be. How there isn’t a “Warren for 10 Hours” video on Youtube baffles me. Adult Swim should do that. On TV the loop is only differentiated by Space Ghost’s final line to Warren’s magic screen. “When you see him in (Poland/Pelham/Conyers)”
In retrospect, this is almost like a pilot for Adult Swim itself. This also feels like an important stepping stone towards other Williams Street Adult Swim series. Borrowed or limited assets digitally animated on similarly borrowed or limited backdrops to create a short, funny story with a beginning, middle, and an end is a formula that would be applied to shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, The Brak Show, 12. Oz. Mouse, among others. It’s an important evolution to the Williams Street style, and it proves that they don’t have to be limited to just making just fake talk shows.
As for how enjoyable this episode truly is: I will say that it took me a while to appreciate this episode. It’s very interesting on a meta-level. But I don’t know if there’s a ton of laughs. There are funny moments for sure, though. I really do prefer the more “normal” episodes to this. It’s a cool piece of art, and watching it now might be dulled by the years of Adult Swim programming that’s followed it. Weirdly I don’t find that to be an issue with the more traditional Space Ghost episodes. But you gotta respect it.
Viewing Note: the “long” version was released officially on the now very out of print DVD, but HBOMax only carries the short version. When viewing the short version please understand that the scene at the end is actually occurring directly before the scene at the beginning. Thank you.

Space Ghost rocks.
Hey you know what? He sure does.
hey do you like this song ♫ You don't know me by now/ you'll never ever ever know me/ ooooo wooooo ♫
I think I already answered this one, please disregard
hey bill murray didn't come in until season 2
I know :(
DVD EDIT ALERT: A bit where Garrett goes off singing "Money" by The O'Jays was significantly shortened for the DVD.  I can't paste the whole thing easily but following snard's transcript the deleted section starts with "Garrett Morris: (sings) Some people, got to have it." and ends with "Space Ghost: I'm talkin' to myself." Probably. I haven't re-checked that to be sure but I like to think my memory for Space Ghost DVD edits is perfect. Please don't burst my bubble.
I didn’t realize that! Dang it!
the lewis lectures still rocks my world? who the fuck was that f**?
I edited out your slur AND I’M TELLING ON YOU FOR SAYING IT

Space Ghost Coast to Coast #50: “Hipster” | November 7, 1997 | S04E17
Hey! It’s another one of them conceptual episodes of Space Ghost that will likely leave you cold. In this one we see the return of Chad Ghostal, the evil version of his brother Tad. He has a goatee and a swingin’ personality. He has guests The Millionaire from Combustible Edison and band leader Sam Butera, the originator of “Just a Gigolo” popularized by David Lee Roth.
Combustible Edison is a somewhat forgettable novelty band that got a surprising amount of play in the 90s. Their music can be heard in the film Four Rooms and the trailer for The Truman Show. They were a self-described “Tiki Band”. The Millionaire’s interview is a definite low-point for the series. But: DID YOU KNOW: HE USED TO BE COOL??? In the 80s he and Liz Cox (also of Combustible Edison) were in a lightly-ironic post-punk trio called Christmas, and they were fantastic. “Vortex”, their final posthumous record, is a masterpiece and should be listened to immediately after you get done with this post. Okay? Promise me. Anyway, Combustible Edison is not for me, and I often derisively refer to them as a “Viva Variety act” to… well, myself, mostly.
DVD Note: This one features a music replacement: Sam Butera sings a few bars of “Just a Gigolo” and it somehow wasn’t able to be cleared for the DVD release, so they dubbed over it with… I don’t know what. I’m guessing that’s somebody from the Space Ghost staff signing a made-up song in a falsetto.

I only know BooBooKitty from something Jason Mewes said in one of the Kevin Smith movies. I think Jay and Bob Strike back?
I remember when he said that. It pissed me off. Man, that movie, it really did blow. I was a mega Kevin Smith fan and that movie was so grating. Dogma and that really were like, my Star Wars prequels that I had to pretend to like.
looks like he done did more than flirt with disaster, if ya know what i mean
Can I also come clean here and admit that I legitimately really liked Silver Linings Playbook? I think people were down on it only because it was nominated for Academy Awards. Like, it was an above-average Hollywood romantic comedy with Bradley Cooper doing an impression of Brody Stevens, and I respect it despite whatever other flaws it might have. Also American Hustle might be the biggest gulf between GREAT TRAILER and BAD MOVIE I’ve ever seen. That whole movie felt joyless and rushed to me, but man, that trailer made it look incredible.
