(Cuterebra buccata, a gorgeous botfly which apparently parasitizes bunnies? So large I thought she was a cicada when I first sighted her!)

Deer nose botfly, Cephenemyia stimulator, Oestridae

As the name suggests, the larvae of this species are obligate parasites of cervids (deer). Larvae hatch in the adult female fly’s uterus; she then flies near the host animal and flings them into or near the animal’s nostrils. The larvae migrate down to the base of the host’s throat where they attach, feed, and mature. Mature larvae are ejected out the nose or mouth and pupate in soil.

This species will have the most innocent adorable kissable marketable appearance of any fly evolved, but then you look them up and they have blood curdling lore able to turn your stomach in a sense rivaling Nick Cutter’s novels. I couldn’t even keep it together trying to read up on their life cycle for the first time because of

1. How convolutely messed up of a parasitism method they chose to thrive by

2. The extremely stupid reason behind why they accidentally end up in humans and the horrific location where

3. The images-information whiplash happening in my head that I hope this editing gets across.

spotted an absolute delight on my walk today, this is only the second time I've ever seen an adult botfly and the first time I was able to photograph one! I think this one is a rodent botfly in genus Cuterebra.

this was an insect I've been so excited to finally see in person!
