Possibly my absolute favourite TF2 fic right now. Scout gets character development out the ass, Demo has a prominent, important role, and there's a plot twist so good it had me tweaking out. TW for Suicide as a method used to get out of a time loop. Absolutely incredible, and it needs more love.

shamir's first impression of alistair was uh. "kind of annoying & immature but i can befriend him yeah". shamir being one of the famed orphans taken in by the chantry, they met as kids LMAO (& shamir's magic manifested relatively late so they got some time to bond). both of them were relatively abrasive but shamir had this inherent... sense of superiority, sort of. he thought he had it so much worse than alistair (not necessarily true, also did not know anything about alistair) simply because alistair would be more overtly, eh, temperamental? worth noting shamir was overall calmer but when he got mad he got MAD. with all that said he did want to befriend him anyway because well he didn't have any friends & the one other really miserable kid was basically the best potential friend there

as for alistair there's kiiind of two answers. one, "great they're bringing another kid in", didn't have very strong feelings about it whatsoever initially... they were fast friends but alistair wasn't exactly yearning for friendship there lmao. & two, just... "oh. this one looks really messed up. duncan are you sure". he doesn't recognise shamir & doesn't have a CLUE how bad it got. all he sees is a really beat up & messy guy who happens to be a mage (potentially scary both for everyone & said mage!)

2 - What attracted the Warden to them - their looks, personality, or something else?

as kids, the fact they seemed to have a similar personality in some aspects yeah. shamir can't do with someone too soft but someone too entirely gloomy with no joy at all in their heart is like. boring! (cut to him getting really close with morrigan because she's not that good at pretending she doesn't give a fuck) upon meeting him again it wasn't really that anymore though. it became more about them living through as much as they did then reuniting anyway, which felt extremely unlikely since shamir's survival in the first place was completely unexpected for him, & how it Must've Meant Something. alistair was the one familiar face he had after running from the circle & the only one he felt he could trust (though not enough to... tell him who he was... his problems) so he did automatically latch onto him. but it's fine because they're compatibleeee 👍👍👍

3 - What was it about the Warden that attracted their LI?

shamir is skilled in areas alistair isn't. maybe simple but for one, alistair did not really expect that of the extremely tormented-looking mage duncan picked up off the side of the road, & for two it's just really impressive to watch someone be really good at something you're not... & alistair could've had grounds for getting a bit catty about it if they had an antagonistic dynamic but they do not. they riff off of each other & banter a fair bit but it's in good fun for the most part. so instead alistair just grows kind of. smitten by how good this guy is at Leading & Sculpting (well especially when he receives handmade little statues. of course.) & Some Other Things Also. & he doesn't really know what it means to be good at magic but shamir looks like he's got it handled yeah

6 - If the Warden was to give their LI a token of their affection, what would it be and why?

well. (looks up) handmade little statue of a griffon. of course. eyes made of a shinier stone. wings surprisingly detailed. a dynamic pose too! alistair is extremely scared of breaking it. shamir knows alistair is! very! proud of being a warden, it being the only thing he's got left pretty much, and he loves his toys, & creating figures is one artistic venue he isn't terrified of. it kinda works out for both of them

9 - Where was their first kiss? And how did it go?

at camp, in shamir's tent, went surprisingly well all things considered! it came about after the broken circle because going back there really fucked with shamir. kind of had a really bad case of bottle-up-then-explode about it that led to alistair finding out Oh That's My Childhood Friend (by that point he'd definitely been onto it but like. couldn't really outright ask for sure especially because it's extremely fucking bizarre of shamir to act like they never met each other before joining the wardens for that long. why would anyone do that) (also he was having a bit of a sexuality crisis which got promptly resolved then but like it preoccupied him too much to think that hard okay.) & Oh They Made Him Tranquil Okay Cool No Yeah This Is Fine (said with feeling). (shamir is no longer tranquil) (what happens when you make a somniari tranquil. you thought the spirits he befriended wouldn't come touch his mind fixing-him style? don't make me laugh greagoir.) (irving did also facilitate this not because he's "nice" but because there's something seriously wrong with his accelerationist methods) (is shamir an abomination? Well okay maybe but we don't have time for all that) (not any more than wynne is!)

it's not really a spur of the moment impulsive kiss or anything despite the circumstances. once they're both done kinda crying & being miserable & really sad about everything that happened they hold each other quietly for a while, because that was exhausting, & kissing comes pretty naturally when they shift positions & their heads get that close. lmao.

10 - Did they keep their relationship a secret or do others know? Who was the first to find out they were together?

i don't think either of them are capable of being secretive about this in particular. shamir is usually not so bad at keeping things to himself but it's only if they have either 1) nothing to do with him or 2) everything to do with him. anything that involves him & someone else? he'll make it obvious way too quickly. if anything the rest of the companions probably found out before THEY did lmfao. "took you long enough" type of situation. morrigan is definitely the one who got overtly told about it first. conversely discussing his relationship with morrigan specifically is the only time shamir will feel embarrassed about his dating choices. "well if that makes you happy" said with considerable disapproval can be devastating

13 - What is the Warden's fondest memory of their LI? And what is their LI's fondest memory of the Warden?

despite being a bit of a (coughs) tsundere about him shamir would actually really struggle picking one specific fondest memory of alistair. he's very much embodying the everyone clap for my lame ass boyfriend or i'm blowing the entire building up post. he's also forgotten quite a lot from his childhood due to trauma, which deeply upsets him, however one thing that does stick with him is alistair & him roleplaying & alistair complying when shamir said he wanted to roleplay as a Prince. A Boy Prince. (alistair joked about roleplaying as a princess from a rival kingdom but shamir jokingly flirted with him in response & that got him too flustered to continue in that line of japes. hashtag silly twelve year oldsss)

alistair has been thinking about shamir hugging him tight & whispering "i'm glad you're still here" after ostagar for many slutty, slutty years & shows absolutely no signs of stopping anytime soon. it was long before they went to take care of the circle so they reaaally didn't have much going on at the time yet but it made him feel Wanted in a way he never had before. & shamir pulling away all embarrassed & trying to act like he didn't do & say that was very cute also he will not let shamir live it down ever

16 - What is the Warden's favorite thing about their LI? And what is their LI's favorite thing about the Warden?

very simple! shamir loves that alistair cares. not just about him (though very much about him) but in general. he has these very... chantry-induced reactions to things but prompting him to reconsider generally works, which is very good considering alistair was almost a templar & shamir's a mage of many circle-doesn't-like-that afflictions! if alistair was any more into the templar mindset things would get really rough really quickly

ah... i think alistair above all else is enamored with how cool shamir is. which is to say being seemingly fearless, running headfirst into situations with utmost confidence (& well they always end up victorious so it's not like shamir's been bitten in the ass about it), getting into verbal fights & winning by sheer force of will, all things that make him sigh dreamily. however! he is equally fond of shamir being vulnerable with him. it is utterly revolutionary to him that someone this cool has also shown him that side of him.

21 - Does the Warden and their LI ever get jealous? Are they possessive or chill?

VERY context dependent. in that they both have to be involved in whatever's going on. the awakening situationship polycule only works because alistair is also present & that's something everyone at vigil's keep has to accept. zevran flirting with shamir was bad until he started flirting with alistair too & suddenly it became ok. still in the process of deciding if zev is actually their third For Real or not bc i love him too much for him to just be an "and i'm here also" character but idk if they are capable of having as strong a bond with him as they do with each other & that simply won't do. i think he can become their most special guy in the world though. I want to believe

22 - Who said 'I love you' first?

not shamir that's for sure!! it was alistair & he was cocky about it too. there's definitely a part of him that pushed him to say it when he did just so shamir couldn't claim to have said it first. another part of him said it because he was sort of losing a deeply unserious argument he was too smug about & saying it shut shamir right up. shamir did very much want to strangle him about it

31 - How does the Warden and their LI show their affections?

over time alistair gets more comfortable with the idea of loudly calling shamir pet names across camp/the street/wherever they are really, especially once he leans more into the "cringe" aspect of it by intentionally sounding silly when saying them. he's very typically romantic - gets shamir gifts relatively frequently, number 1 pda warrior (once he gets comfortable with it.), it's pretty straightforward. he also gets extremely invested in shamir being able to get proper rest & saved up coin specifically to get him better bedding & covers. this of course also benefits him due to them sharing a bed but he only thought about himself a little bit, honest!

shamir is sort of quieter about it but his demeanor doesn't really hide it... he can frequently be found hugging alistair's arm & falling asleep on/against him when nothing's happening (even when something's happening. that somniari life does not fuck around with sleepytime), he fixes alistair's clothing if it looks too messy to his taste, gets really sappy really easily when they're alone. those formerly-tranquil emotions do kind of beat his ass he's really quick to start crying if he pauses to think about how much he loves alistair. when he's really sleepy but not quite asleep yet he'll just start muttering all sorts of really affectionate semi-functional sentences that don't necessarily make sense but the intent is more than enough to communicate how much he cares

34 - If the Warden survives, what does their future with their LI look like? Do they stay together?

of course! #happyendinglikersorry now of course here lies the abyss caused a disturbance in the peace but one of the reasons i made shamir a somniari is specifically to circumvent that particular problem. alistair & percy are both surviving the fade & they will fucking like it!!! ughh the implications of percy & shamir coexisting gives me a headache. but anyway. there is no way for shamir to get alistair to stop caring about the wardens (& well he's grown to care too.) so they just. keep doing their warden thing. shamir voice Man it'd be really cool to have a kid i guess we'll have to do with all these numbskull recruits instead while morrigan is having SO much FUN with kieran (LOUUUUUDDD JEALOUS SIGH)

35 - How do the Warden and their LI cope with the Calling? Is it something that hangs over them?

ayayaya. shamir does not cope at all. alistair tries to bring it up at some point & shamir straightup ignores him until he can't anymore. he tries to not think about it, he hates any mentions of it & in the end it really is alistair who has to get on the topic despite also wilfully avoiding it for a while. fearless shamir is in fact very much terrified of both dying & losing his loved ones, especially at an earlier age than average, & he's very much hoping someone will find a way to reverse the joining somehow. he's fine with the warden life at first glance but when he gets to thinking about it he becomes very, very, very upset that he wasn't given a shot at an actual normal life, despite knowing the most normal life he otherwise could've hoped for would've been far worse. in a surprising turn of events (for him) alistair turns out to be the one who's more at peace with it but he doesn't really know how to help ease shamir's fears so after that one instance he just avoids the topic around him. this becomes really rough during the events of inquisition shamir legitimately feels like he's going insane (like more than usual) & before alistair goes on his great quest to hide in a cave shamir kind of makes him swear he will not go to the deep roads without him. & then gives him an amulet as a gift but that amulet is kind of a magical tracking device so he can make sure alistair did not go to the deep roads. my mentally stable warden

As a ryden enthusiast I was wondering all the same things at the beginning. And here are the answers to your inquiries:What happened in Capetown? So basically my personal favorite/the theory I believe is (and again this is all speculation and theory) -So everyone knows that Capetown is the last show that patd played together before the split. This is when Ryan and bden broke up. -there are many corresponding lyrics between post split patd songs and the young veins songs. (Ryan's band he sang and wrote songs for after patd)A prime example would be the song "Capetown" by the young veinsIt says "I loved you, I left you in Capetown" also in the song it says "when I was in Asia I forgot how to call you" In the song "Bittersweet" by patd. It's one of the bonus tracks from vices and virtues and is not on the album but you can find it on YouTube. In Bittersweet it says "I've been to Tokyo and South Africa, so many places that you may say I've seen it all. But my favorite place, is the warm embrace, of holding your hair in the back of a bathroom stall" -there are more examples but I pretty much think 80% of the songs off of the young veins album, Take a Vacation, and patd' album vices and virtues are about ryden Is bden bi? Beebo has said in interviews things like "call it bi or whatever but I see some guys and I'm like that's a good looking guy I would make out with him" and that's not like an exact quote but he says similar things. I feel like Ryan's personality is really reserved and not really affectionate. While Brendon is like really outgoing. Also, I feel like Ryan is the reason they broke up in the first place. Due to song lyrics because a lot of the songs Ryan wrote are kind of apologizing almost. While the songs bden writes are about how he himself is right in a relationship. Ok back to the point, even though Ryan hasn't been active on twitter in 2 years, he follows Brendon. Even after the split (9 years ago) he still follows bden and Brendon doesn't follow him back. Brendon also hesitates to say Ryan's name. So I think bden is a little salty still and maybe a little sad.However, again most of those are just opinions and theories.
