Starting and Building Your Kawaii Wardrobe – Where to Shop, DIY's, and more!
Originally posted to www.onlyfunthings.org on January 04, 2019

Ciao lovelies! In the spirit of the New Year, I know some of you may have a New Year’s resolution to “Try new things” or “dress in cute fashion”, or something like it! Maybe your New Year’s Resolution is to try out dressing in kawaii inspired fashion! Maybe you already dress in kawaii fashion but are always looking to expand your wardrobe! Well, today’s post can help, because today we are talking about how to start and build a kawaii wardrobe! I’m going to be giving my shopping tips, links to plenty of DIYs, and more that can help you in your kawaii fashion journey! Let’s go!
Today I’ll be talking about general “Kawaii-Inspired” fashion, not one specific style of Kawaii fashion.
Finding Kawaii Inspired Clothing!
-          If you’re on a budget, my recommendation is to shop in Thrift Stores! You can find really cute pastel sweaters at thrift stores, you can find really cute skirts and dresses, and sometimes even really nice handbags! I have found lots of items that work for a general “kawaii-alternative” fashion look in thrift stores! You really never know what you could find there. I’ve found dresses, skirts, sweaters, bags, and blouses all for really good prices, and all worked for kawaii fashion. You can even find cute home décor and sometimes even cute jewelry! Unsure where to start when it comes to thrifting or just want some tips? Check out our top 5 tips for Thrift Shopping!
-          Another great place to look for “kawaii-inspired” clothing is Hot Topic or Forever 21! You can find cute overalls/overall dresses, t-shirts, skirts, skater dresses, knee and thigh high socks, and other cute clothing! The only problem with these stores is that they can be somewhat expensive.
-          Another option for getting kawaii clothing is to make it yourself! Fabric stores like JoAnn even have patterns you can use if you don’t like drafting your own. And there are plenty of good clothing tutorials online, Yumi King’s channel has many if you search far back in her videos (a good way to do this is to order the videos from “Oldest First”).
-          If making clothes from scratch isn’t your thing, you can always modify clothing to suit your needs! We actually have some clothing modification tutorials, and I will be trying to make more this summer. Our Clothing-Mod tutorials include: Adding Cat Ears to a Hoodie, Shoe Upgrade, DIY Cutsew from a T-shirt, and DIY T-shirt into Tank Top.
Finding Kawaii Inspired Accessories!
-          You can always find kawaii looking accessories in certain shops, you just have to know where to look! Some good stores to look for kawaii accessories in are: Claires, Icing, and Hot Topic! My best advice is to always look through their clearance section! You can find really cute stuff on sale often there.
-          Another place to find cute accessories is in the kid’s section of stores. This might seem weird at first, but kid’s necklaces can be altered into cute bracelets, and you can use charms and such from kid’s jewelry to make into earrings, rings, and brooches.
-          Another great place to find cute accessories is Etsy! There are lots of stores on Etsy that sell cute handmade accessories! Same with Storenvy. The only downside to searching these places for cute handmade jewelry is the higher prices, but you are supporting small businesses, so I say it’s worth it!
-          Lastly, you can also make your own kawaii jewelry! Kawaii charms and other jewelry findings can be bought rather cheaply in lots from Etsy or Aliexpress, and you can make yourself a whole collection of cute accessories! We also have some accessories DIY’s including: How to makeyour own Choker, Chokers level 2, How to make a bag from a dishtowel, …  (To see all our DIY’s, check out our DIY tag!)
Starting and building a kawaii themed wardrobe isn’t hard and doesn’t have to cost a lot if you just know where to look and use a little ingenuity! Happy New Year, and I wish you the best of luck in all your kawaii clothing endeavors this year!
Thank you for reading, remember to love yourself, stay awesome, and I'll see you in our next post!
Remember to Stay Awesome and Love Yourself!

What about the cute bunny shirts? I think they're very cute.
Here is where everything is from >:)
Both baby tees with the little devil bunnies on them — Shoptokkistar, I happened upon them at a psychedelics themed pop up market by the Catcade last summer but they have an online store. Obsessed with it tbh
MCR ouija board shirt — Purchased at Hot Topic in 2014
Bell bottoms — Thrifted from Village Discount but they’re Target Wild Fable Extreme Flare and are available on resale sites sometimes
Purple maxi skirt with leaves — Walmart dot com
Plaid miniskirt — Thrifted from Goodwill but the brand is Babaton, it’s apparently sold at Aritizia
Nirvana 1993 Roseland Ballroom concert shirt— Permanently borrowed from my dad when I was in high school. Who knows where it came from
Motley Crue “The Dirt” crop top — Thrifted from Belmont Army but was apparently sold at Walmart to promote the terrible direct to streaming Motley Crue movie starring Machine Gun Kelly. I cut the bottom off and boiled it to fade/shrink it
Blink182 hoodie — Bought on Poshmark to replace one I lost, was originally bought at a Hot Topic in 2016, it’s promoting Bored To Death
Charm bracelet with moons — Vintage from Etsy

You didn’t like the term femboy
Actually you hated it
You felt like it invalidated trans women, especially after they said it definitely did
You liked the fashion though
Of course, you knew there was a difference between wearing the fashion and the term, so you started to collect clothing pieces
Maybe a skirt from some mall you went to alone
A top from an online store that you just fell in love with.
Black thigh high socks because you thought they matched everything
You also discovered they were incredibly warm.
There were other things like a gold chain choker and shoes but you never wore any of it.
You were too scared to actually wear any of it.
It wasn’t like you’d feel less of a man but it was the fear of it being a real “dirty little secret.”
It wasn’t until you started dating Sugawara that you fully thought about it.
He went through your closet constantly to steal clothes from you.
The clothes you feared him finding were in a box shoved in the farthest corner of your closet.
After a couple months, you were pretty sure he wouldn’t find it until he did.
You were ready for him to break up with you when he pulled the box out of your closet.
“Hey, Y/N, what’s this?” He asked as he opened to look inside.
You were ready to die.
It also didn’t help that you were a terrible liar but you tried not to think of that now.
“Oh, that’s my sister’s. I’m on to it for her,” you lied and he gave you a confused look.
“You don’t have a sister.”
Well he got you there.
“These are cute pieces,” he said as he touched all of them. “When do you wear them?”
“I don’t,” you said as you stared at your hands in your lap. “I’ve never even tried them on.”
Suga was silent, which made you panic.  He was probably debating on breaking up with you, wasn’t he?  This had to be the end of the best relationship you’ve ever had.
“There aren’t any socks,” Suga stated and he looked up to see he had laid the outfit out on the bed.
“Oh, I wear those under my pants in the winter.  They’re black.”
Koushi shook his head as he put his hands on his hips. “You need white socks for this.”
“How would you know?”
“Remember Asahi?” Suga asked and you nodded.  You had met him and Daichi at a bar not long ago. “He’s a fashion designer and ripped my fashion to shreds all throughout high school and college.”
You could faint remember that but you had gotten completely wasted.
Daichi had dared you to a drinking contest for a reason you could not remember and you somehow won.
“You should try this on.” Suga walked over to you and cupped your face. “I’m pretty sure it would look cuter on you.”
After maybe 10 minutes of coaxing, he sent you off to the bathroom.
You stared at the white button down blouse and green and blue plaid tennis skirt.  All you had to do was put it on.
What if you look bad though? Suga would see it and wouldn’t think you were attractive anymore.
You weren’t sure how long it took to put the shirt on before tucking it into the skirt like you had seen in photos before.
Koushi had been right that this wouldn’t be the best with black socks but you would’ve most likely worn them anyways after realizing how cold it was to wear a skirt.
When you finally looked in the mirror, you didn’t know how to feel.
You knew you looked okay but it was just weird for some reason.
Maybe the climax of finally wearing it didn’t meet the suspense leading up to it.
“Y/N, are you done yet?” Suga asked from behind the door and you took in a deep breath.
You didn’t expect Koushi to blush at the sight of you.  His face was bright red and he looked embarrassed about it as he covered his face with his arm.
“What do you think?” You asked after extended silence lingered over you two.
“You look really good,” he said as he took a step forward and straightened your shirt. “Like really good.”
“Really?” You asked and his reaction was more than him just saying you had expected. “Like you really think so?”
He pulled you close to him and you finally felt his erection.
Oh, okay.
It wasn’t the first time he had been turned on by you wear certain clothes.
It had been near impossible to keep him tamed when you wore a suit.  Or the time you wore something your friend had picked out for you.
Both times ended with you fucking him until he cried.
“Too bad this skirt was expensive.”
“You’re so mean, Y/N,” he whined, just like he always did when he didn’t get his way.
“Take a picture for later,” you joked but he whipped out his phone so fast.
“Okay, will you please sit on the bed for the first one?” He started and you laughed  little before you kissed him.
“You’re so annoying.”
You loved him though and you were happy he didn’t think any less than you.
You were also prepared for him to get you more clothes like this.
He did and may have went overboard but you kissed him with a small “thank you.”
Now you weren’t sure why you were so panicked about it to begin with when he was showing you all the outfits he bought for you.

*breathes in* goth reader (who is lowkey a e girl and looks like she could’ve been in the underground the whole time) meets uf grillby. Go crazy with this one darling like go fuck wild with the prompt. Go apeshit. :)
So, I’m an old lady, and I had to figure out what an e-girl was because yo, I had no idea. I’ve heard it before but never actually understood what it meant. So it took a bit before I actually could write this because I had to do *adjusts glasses* research.
By research, I meant googling it and still being confused so I asked my tumblr followers and someone explained it so I accepted that term as the One.
Anyways! Prompt away! Goth(lowkey e-girl) Reader meeting UF!Grillbz.
Heads up, there is some mature themes to this. As in, Reader works at a sex shop. So, be aware. (because you said go wild I was like ‘what’s a wild way to meet someone for the first time? a sex shop. yes perfect got it let’s go.’)
You hummed softly as you scrolled through the comments on your newest Instagram post. You’d started doing OOTD’s because a couple people who followed you on other social media websites begged you too.Though, you had to admit that a lot of the comments were validating as fuck. A couple of people asked where you got specific pieces of clothing, so you answered honestly.
Honestly, once you saw the goth aesthetic you were all over it…and when e-girl aesthetic became a thing you were all over that as well. There was just something about it that felt…right. You looked great, and you didn’t mind people staring at you as much as you might’ve at one point.
Plus, ever since the monsters came to the surface,  there was an explosion of alt-clothing available everywhere and it was beautiful. You could actually find new pieces at your local clothing stores instead of needing to order online and pay the hefty shipping fees.
The bell on the door rang and you locked your phone and tucked it back into your pocket. As you glanced up you saw two masculine looking monsters, but honestly with them you knew to never assume anything. You tried not to assume, especially at your place of work, anything aboutanyone who walked in through the doors. So, you merely smiled, “Hey! Welcome, if you need any help gimme a shout!”
The skeletal monster shrank in his hoodie, making a ‘tch’ sound and proceeded to stare directly at the ground. On the other hand, the monster made entirely of purple flame tilted his head down slightly so you could see his bright white eyes which he winked at you.
You merely kept your smile on because honestly? You were way too used to people flirting with you randomly when they came in.
The two headed off deeper into the store and you waited a bit before moving from behind the counter to start organizing some merchandise.
“tch…no fuckin’ way,” the skeleton’s voice reached your ears as started to front end face all the boxes along the far wall closer to the two monsters. “look, m’tellin’ ya stockings are way fuckin’ hotter than thigh highs.”
“You drink mustard for a beverage, Sans…I do not think your ‘tastes’ are considered viable in anyway,” the fire monster replied back coolly. The skeleton monster, Sans, made a disgruntled noise. “Thigh highs are far superior, and are less likely to tear and be ruined. Quality is sexy.”
Another noise, “what th’ fuck? quality? sorry, forgot your stupid rich ass is into bullshit like ‘cashmere and silk.’” You could hear the distain in the skeletons voice that almost made you snort in response. Instead, you kept your opinions and thoughts to yourself as you continued to hear them banter back and forth. Sans was still avoiding looking at anything while the other perused the merchandise casually.
A purple firey hand picked up one of the boxes near you and began to examine it closely.
“uh, s’cuse me,” Sans said, and it took you a second to realize he was talking to you, but once you did you quickly apologized and asked him if there was something you could help him with. “what d’ya think? stockings or thigh highs?”
You paused, confused as to why you were being asked that. However, when you shifted your weight you were reminded that you were wearing stockings. Ah, was he trying to get you to agree with him? You tilted your head in thought, did you agree with him? Potentially…but you sawstockings as more ‘traditionally sexy’.
“Thigh highs,” you said finally, “because if the girl is wearing a skirt you can see that little strip of thigh between the thigh high and the skirt and that's hot.”
The fire monster, whom you still didn’t know the name of, gestured at you with a dildo. “See, Sans? A woman of culture. Unlike you.”
Working at a sex shop was never a tiresome endeavour, especially when customers use a dildo to emphasize a point before they realized they were in fact holding a phallus shaped object.
Sans tsked, “then why aren’t cha wearing thigh highs insteada stockings?”
You glanced down at your stockings. They were just basic fishnet stockings beneath a black skirt. You returned your gaze to Sans and then shrugged, “cus I thought I looked cute like this today. But, anyways, enough about me!” you waved your hands, “What brings you two in for? Anything I can help you out with?”
The fire monster was already looking at a different dildo, examining it curiously. Sans on the other hand shrank into his hoodie, glaring over at the fire monster. “tch, this asshole’s lookin’ for some shit.”
“You could get something for yourself too,” the fire monster pointed out, placing the dildo back down to pick up a bigger vibrator.
“I can make some suggestions if you’re looking to spice things up in the bedroom together,” you said, and the reaction was instant. The fire monster recoiled visably, and Sans started sputtering, eye sockets wide.
“i!!! ain’t with this asshole!” he said, his accented voice becoming thicker as he took a few steps away from his companion.
“He is my ride here, nothing more,” the fire monster said quickly.
“y-yeah!” Sans added. The two began to insist that they really weren’t together, not letting you get a word in edge wise to apologize for the confusion. You hadn’t meant together as in they were together but just together as in friends shopping together. Of course, you listened in amusement as they basically listed off all the reasons why they totally couldn’t be together to you before falling silent. You basically got to listen to two people roast each other for thirty minutes, progressively finding stupider reasons about why they wouldn’t work together.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to assume,” you settled for and Grillby, whom you finally figured out his name during their attempt to prove that they weren’t together, nodded stiffly before turning and front end facing a few boxes that you hadn’t gotten to yet. He picked up one of the larger dildos that your store carried and you added, “We also have some beginner ones-“
He gave you a dry look, “I’m not a beginner, I’ve had bigger.”
“didn’t need to know that,” Sans grumbled, covering his face with a hand, “look, grillbz, imma wait for ya outside. this is too fuckin’ weird.”
He strode towards the door quickly, and with a light dingle of the bell was gone. The moment the door shut completely, Grillby placed the dildo back on the shelf. “I’m here only because he spilt mustard on my favourite white shirt. I apologize for taking up your time, though I must admit, I’m glad that such a lovely woman as you is the one working. I haven’t seen many humans dressing like you.”
You would blush but you had stopped taking anyone’s flirts seriously while on shift.  “It’s kind of a niche look for humans,” you admitted, subconsciously tugging at the sleeves of your shirt. “To be honest,it was incredibly hard to find this sort of stuff until Monsters got to thesurface. You all look so awesome, how do you even find this sort of stuff?”
He gave you a thoughtful look at that, “I know a spider who custom makes clothing. A lot of monsters make their own clothing…for obvious reasons. Though…if I am honest, I thought you would have known that by now.”
You rose an eyebrow, “Uh…why?”
That made him pause, then he gestured to your neck, “You have a collar.”
It took a few seconds before it hit you.Oh! Your neighbour explained that monsters wore collars for different purposes. You were wearing a black leather choker with a silver heart on it. “Oh! Uh…no, this is a choker…it’s a fashion thing for humans. There’s no one…I’m not with anyone like that,” you quickly said, hoping you weren’t offending him.
“A woman of your quality and beauty? I’m fucking amazed you don’t have a plethora of people begging to be with you,” he said, eyes slowly raking over your body. “But again, I apologize for taking up your time.”
That compliment did manage to have your cheeks heat up.
“You’re my first customer in thirty minutes,” you admitted with a shrug instead, “Though if you are looking for something I can help you.”
He was silent for a moment before nodding, “I was actually curious about the body safe wax candles?”
“Oh! Those are my favourite, we got some new ones in,” you said happily, leading him over. You spent the next thirty minutes talking to him about the safety and precautions while using the candles, how to use them. It then dissolved into talking about different objects around the store that he was curious about, and he actually ended up purchasing a good amount of products.
He paused before he left and then pulled out a business card and slid it across the counter towards you. It said ‘Grillby’s Bar’ in swirling purple font, along with an address and times on it.
“If you ever swing by for a drink, I’ll be sure to be as gracious as a host to you as you’ve been to me today,” he said, voice dripping with as much swagger and confidence as someone who had bought a giant purple dragon dildo should have. He said it was to freak out Sans, but when you told him that dildos weren’t returnable (for obvious reasons), he said that he wouldn’t need to.
You raised your eyebrow at him, “You own a bar?”
Grillby smirked, “Best one in town if you ask me.”
You laughed, rolling your eyes. “Says the owner.”
He chuckled before looking at you over his sunglasses, “I have excellent taste, after all.”
“That you do,” you replied, dropping your gaze to his bag, teasingly, “I hope you enjoy yourself!”
Grillby winked at you, “Oh, I will. Though, if you swing by my bar after your finished work tonight, I think my night would be just about made.”
“I’ll think about it,” you replied quickly, and he sauntered out with a wave.
You rolled your eyes but grinned. Maybe you would stop by his bar tonight.
Maybe…you’d switch your stockings for thigh highs.

Trending Best Raksha Bandhan/Rakhi Outfit Ideas On YouTube
Tumblr media
Rakhi Outfit - India is a land of festivals and rituals. We celebrate everything from buying a new bike to the arrival of a new member in the family. Festivals are a big deal for us. Not to mention that the way they are celebrated changes with every hundred miles. Having said that, some festivals unite the whole nation and string everyone together with one thread. Raksha Bandhan is one such festival that celebrates the ever-confusing yet the loving bond between siblings. We can say the fights subside for that 2-3 hours or so. Besides, there are so many things to cherish. The rich and delish Indian sweets, boxes above boxes of them, the fragrance of freshly brewed love in the form of tea, being served to a house full of closest relations. As wonderful as it all sounds, the thing that excites me the most is dressing up in an all-Indian Attire for the occasion. I’m sure all the ladies would agree with me. Right from coming up with a style and color combinations, to assembling the whole outfit, complete with accessories and footwear. As much as we enjoy it, it can be a daunting task, to achieve wholly by yourself. It is no hidden fact that everything has got a boost by the uproar of the internet. The first impression of the channel is very peppy and trendy, which is followed up nicely by all the traditional yet super-comfy outfits. This one YouTuber inspires you to go ahead and get something stitched from whatever fabrics you have at home.  And pair them with some of your own clothes. Which is very innovative, and hassle-free too! Along with being fashionable, she follows some classic trends and colors, which once invested in, can be worn with other things. Not to forget the ultra-chic jewelry and footwear she pairs with each attire. So subscribe the channel and get your visual treats in the form of outfit ideas to make your Rakhi as rocking as you are. Pooja Pundir https://youtu.be/muQkSrVR0sk So many times, we have no festive wear in our close vicinity. And we get double-minded on one to wear. But if you have subscribed to this channel, there is no need for that. Because the host tells you how out of limited and basic outfit, you can create praise-worthy festive outfits. She talks in a really confident way that makes us feel confident about the outfits and it does not make us think that she has crammed up a script. The clothes she styles are the normal ones, but the way she styles it makes a whole lot of difference to them. Give them a cool festival-like vibe. She also tells you for how much she bought a particular piece, and from where. For you to go ahead and try. Pooja Kaushik Misra https://youtu.be/7Del9WYsmYE This is one of the trusted YouTube channels. The hosts, along with informing you about what is in trend and what is not, also tells you the substitute of some outfits. These substitutes happen to be within your budget, which makes the channel even more subscribing-worthy. Also, most outfits she talks about are stitched, so you could even make some changes here and there. The cherry on the top is the tips she gives with each outfit, adding something to it and giving you a little extra information. What I liked the most is that she has kept comfort as her top priority, which we don’t see much these days. Vanya Bhatnagar https://youtu.be/6-PsynHtZg4 I found the outfit ideas shared on this channel to be really unique. The things that you’ll find in stores selling traditional outfits. But again the dilemma of how to style them remains there. If you encounter this problem a lot, then this channel is your place to be. She has worn big antique earrings to go with each outfit, so you get the idea of how to pair them with everything. From Conventional rugged jeans to the trendy tulip pants. You could even see how she has paired a choker with the most basic outfit, making it anything but basic. Chhavi Tripathi Official https://youtu.be/PkjIFey5h2o Although most of these channels do the same thing, yet there is a distinctive factor in all of them. Now this one, for those ladies who love their traditional outfits, and own a bunch of them, you can take a leaf out the host’s book on how to make a simple Indian suit look absolutely ravishing. Also, by subscribing to this channel you could learn styling the dupatta, a trick that if learned could go a long way. If you’re tired of those one-pieces, she also tells you how you could wear them in an ethnic way for rakhi. All the styles she has shown are such that, they can be carried by anyone which makes the channel very helpful, on the whole, if you’re looking for a similar Rakhi Outfit. Harajuku Outfit Ideas 6
It’s been some time since my last styling post, so since the next walk in SG is happening tomorrow, here’s some ideas for how to style a qipao (or cheongsam) in a more tokyo street/harajuku manner.
For those who are unsure, a qipao is a traditional Chinese garment that was popularised in the 1920s by Chinese celebrities and the upper class, but the original garment has its roots in Manchu times. (x) The slim-fitted version with the straight skirt and sometimes a slit on the side that we see today are based on the designs from Shanghai in the 20s and early 30s.
Qipao are getting easier to find nowadays, and can be bought online for an affordable price. So this is mainly for people who have qipao at home already that basically only see the light of day on CNY. The one I used in this set was something I made… for CNY… that hasn’t seen the light of day since…
As always, these are just base suggestions and they require a lot more accessories to really bring the whole thing together. And don’t forget to do your hair and makeup!
♔ Culture Mix
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This first look uses a qipao as a base with a yukata layered over it. I tied a yellow obi over it, matching some of the accent colours on the yukata, and added a blue belt to match the qipao, as a more modern, replacement obijime. I also tucked a printed blue scarf into the obi to simulate an obiage.
To finish off this look, I added a pearl bag and a pearl necklace. This could do with more pearl or pearl-coloured accessories, maybe a pair of earrings or a headband. Or alternatively, the accessories could be more chunky and match the accent colours of either the yukata or the qipao.
A nice makeup look could be more classic Chinese movie star type, red lips and thick winged liner with straight brows, and hair could be shorter or curled in a 20s style.
For this look, I decided to go all colourful, and head in a more maximalist direction, but if you want to go more monochrome or with less colours for your coord, that’s perfectly fine too. Just remember to match the hair, makeup and accessories to your look.
♔ Shimmering Sheers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This look has a sheer metallic blouse with bishop sleeves under the qipao with the shirt collar over the mandarin collar of the qipao for more dimension. I also added a sheer skirt over the qipao, which is decorated with stars and constellations.
For accessories, I went with metallic plastic necklaces which can be gotten cheaply from secondhand stores, and 2 belts that help to tie the look together. There’s also a wide-brimmed hat and clear blue shades, as well as a pair of white shoes. If you’re wearing this for the walk, I would suggest something with lower heels or even white sneakers.
Makeup for this look can be more glossy, with sparkly or metallic eyeshadows that give a simulated gloss look without the mess. And hair should be kept simple so it doesn’t distract from the silhouette.
The key point of this look as the sheer layers, so if you use this idea, remember to keep those layers there, but play with colour and length to give different effects.
♔ Rocker Chic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This last look uses the qipao as the main focal point, and it’s done so that it’s the only colourful part of the look. The rest of the look is black and white, with a tulle skirt under the qipao and a faux leather jacket over it for a bit of a rocker/edgy vibe. The bag also has studs on it and it matches the black leather belt.
This look is paired with some black boots, but most other black shoes should work too. This look could use accessories like leather or lace bracelets or chokers, and even fishnet stockings would look really cool.
The makeup and hair should be more edgy, more black, with hints of colour to match the qipao.
❀❀❀
Feel free to experiment with different colours and silhouettes of your coords, the qipao typically has a very straight and slim silhouette, so it would be good to try and add more layers to give the outfit more dimension. Alternatively, use a qipao with a flare skirt, that can also provide other options for making coords.
