#5 Bears End NCAA's in 7th Place

Tatematsu, Fouillet Earn Top-20 Finishes

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Playing through windy conditions on the final day of the NCAA Regional, the California women's golf team moved up the leaderboard for the second straight round, ending in seventh place with a pair of top-20 individual finishes.

Senior Rina Tatematsu (73-74-71 – 218) made the Golden Bears' biggest climb of the day, jumping up 12 spots to earn a team-best 13th-place finish. She was one of just three golfers to shoot under par on Wednesday at Spanish Trail Country Club, tying for the round's second-lowest score with a 1-under-par 71. Tatematsu had a team-best five birdies on the day, while her 2-under tournament total on par 3s led the entire field.

Constance Fouillet (76-68-76 – 220) finished 4-over both for the day and the tournament, ending her first NCAA Regional in 18th place. She caps her stellar debut season with a 72.7 scoring average, breaking the program's previous freshman scoring record of 73.6 set by Katherine Zhu in 2018-19.

After missing the first round due to illness, sophomore Adora Liu (70-73) bounced back to post the team's second-lowest score in two straight rounds. Her 1-over 73 in round three was good for the seventh-best individual score.

Senior Cristina Ochoa (75-77-75 – 227) closed out her final regional in 41st place with a 3-over 75 and sophomore Olivia Lee (80-76-77 – 233) carded a 5-over 77.

Despite starting the day 11 strokes out of fifth place, the Bears remained confident knowing that they had saved their best score for the last round in seven of their previous eight tournaments. They finished six strokes shy of matching fifth-place Florida State (+14), which advanced to the NCAA Championships alongside UCLA (+12), Baylor (+8), Purdue (+4) and first-place Arkansas (E).

This was also the 23rd and final regional for Nancy McDaniel, who has served as Cal's founding head coach for the past 29 seasons. McDaniel – who recently announced that she will be retiring following the season – leaves behind an immense legacy that includes two Pac-10/12 and West Regional Coach of the Year awards, two Pac-10 championships, five top-five showings at NCAA Regionals, one NCAA Regional win, and three top-five finishes at the NCAA Championships.

"It's a unique day. You don't ever get this day until today, so you can't practice it," McDaniel said. "When you're in regionals, you're just thinking about regionals. But when you have former players texting you, and you see some really special alums show up in person, you understand the relationships that you've created together and the impact they've had on you. That's what it's all about."

In McDaniel's final season at the helm, the Bears tied or broke six program records, most of which were achieved during a blistering stretch in the fall when they won three straight competitions for the first time ever.

Since setting four program records at the Molly Invitational in September, the Bears have continued to make this a season to remember. They defeated No. 1 Stanford 4-3 in the Big Match and came from behind to win the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in October, sealing the program's run of victories. To just miss the championships by six strokes and place 7th out of 72 teams is a respectable accomplishment by any measure.

"I'm competitive. Cal is competitive. This is another step in the direction that we're striving towards," McDaniel said. "We know where we want to be. I'm going to support, help, and be in the background to see Cal golf go to that next level. I want them to have that."

The Brief: “What makes NCIS so damn special?” That question is furiously put to Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) by his estranged son, Jared (Spence D. Moore II), in the NCIS franchise’s 1,000th episode. Launched in 2003, NCIS has four spinoffs and two highly anticipated shows coming — NCIS: Origins and a Michael Weatherly–Cote de Pablo project nicknamed NCIS: Europe.

The younger Vance makes his query when the two cross paths at his mom’s gravesite. Vance’s wife was killed by terrorists in 2013, and Jared can’t comprehend why his dad is so dedicated to a job that put their family in danger.

Make that puts: Vance is soon in peril and the team under attack by an enemy from the past. “We’ve heard this baddie’s name before,” exec producer Steven D. Binder told us at a celebration on the set. “As in some of our better episodes, our people risk their lives for each other. We pay homage to the O.G. NCIS and the other series.”

Guest star alert: Assisting via satellite feed are Los Angeles agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Hawai‘i boss Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey). The cavalry also includes a longtime NCIS ally, former FBI agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano).

In a scene we observed, forensic scientist Kasie (Diona Reasonover) reviews evidence with Torres (Wilmer Valderrama). Jared, desperate to help, has slept there overnight. “Kasie connects with Jared and becomes a mentor in a way,” Reasonover says.

Valderrama hints it all gets explosive, promising “a big, big set piece; all of us are involved.” And one agent does something new: “We see McGee in a position you’ve never seen him in in 20 years,” spills Sean Murray. Says Gary Cole, who plays team leader Alden Parker, “We witness some fragility of what this job entails, the obstacles that could pop up unexpectedly.”

The Brief: The Big Easy’s brassy, buoyant spirit infused the franchise’s third title, shot memorably on location. Before shooting on lush Oahu began, production held a traditional Hawaiian blessing. three days before she died, sera got "forever young" tattooed on her shoulder. it was meant to be a playful reminder to live in the moment and to embrace her youth without worrying about the future. now, the tattoo has taken on a bitterly ironic meaning; she is literally forever young.

ABOUT

Nate was born to Jonas and Olivia Hawthorne, one of several children in the Hawthorne Political machine. He grew up with several siblings, and all of them were prepped from an early age to follow in their family's footsteps.

From an early age, Nate was able to adapt to any setting he was put in, from schools to society events, he was a gregarious child, always making people smile or laugh with a witty remark. But he was equally head-strong and opinionated, with a mind of his own and desires of his own. Perhaps it was the wild nature that slumbered within him, but Nate always felt called to follow his own path. It's what eventually prompted him to break rank and pursue opportunities in media, much to his father's chagrin (and probably to some sibling's delight).

He's co-anchor on Good Morning New York, and has spun it that he can help sway what stories get covered about the family's political involvement. Nate may come off as a nice guy off camera, but he's got his opinions, and an upbringing that makes him cocky at times and skeptical of others. Still, when the camera's on him, he's just Nate Hawthorne, welcoming you to Good Morning New York.

Recent events and the attack of Felix Ranström has left some hard feelings between the others and the Hawthorn family but if there's anything Nate is good at, it's appearing put together, even with doubts cast their way. After all, appearance is everything.

However, he's recently discovered within the past few months that he had a daughter he didn't know about – the result of a one night stand with Luna Moore (as far as he knew, she was just another pretty face at a bar downtown). It's a strange adjustment for the Hawthorne who'd always kept his life mostly drama free from the public eye. But now he's trying to figure out how involved he should be, how involved he wants to be, and how involved he can be in his daughter's life. Six years is a lot to miss and he's not sure if he can make it up. But he's willing to try.

Greatest flaw (in their opinion): How long she can hold a grudge. Regardless of whether or not the person has apologized, if Lexi thinks she’s been wronged in any way, she will absolutely hold some sort of animosity toward that person for a long time. While she isn’t always aggressive in showing her hatred or distrust of a person, she makes it very obvious that she doesn’t appreciate them being around. 

Best quality (in their opinion): Probably how protective she is. Lexi is the type to act first and think later, leading her into some dangerous situations as she forsakes her own safety to protect the people she cares about. Whether it’s a family member, friend, or even a stray animal, she goes out of her way to ensure their safety. She has a great sense of loyalty, which could eventually be her downfall.

Biggest fear: Abandonment. When she was seven, she overheard her group home’s leader telling a potential adoptive family that she had been given up by her parents due to her not being the same race as them. She knew well enough what that meant, but it wasn’t until her biological parents reached out to her at the age of ten, asking her to get tested to see if she would be a donor match for the kidney her brother needed, that she realized how deep it went. They stayed in contact during her testing, but as soon as they realized she wasn’t a match, they ditched her once again. She tried reaching out many times, but they eventually sent her a letter, telling her to stop as they no longer considered her their daughter. Although she has since grown from that and is now quite content in her adoptive family, the thought of anyone leaving her, sends her spiraling.

The Viennese photographer Manfred Baumann has become one of the most influential photographers of his time. It is his ambition to break with conventional views.           silence is a cage— a wall— a lock and key,     the space between thought and words, plan and action. olivia has always liked the quiet, even if she knows not many people do. there’s something about the way the air feels when it’s still, when there’s nothing but her and the time waning by to keep her company.

          but here, in the interrogation room, empty save for the fuse snuffed within it, the silence is not a solace— it’s a shield, barring the metaphorical bullet from the brain. it doesn’t comfort her like she thinks it should. ( not many things that comfort her anymore. )

          ❝ neat trick. ❞     olivia quips as she saunters past the door. she feels the words more than she can hear them, the hum of her headphones filling in the gaps. they’d distanced themselves from the other’s voice with a cheap trick walter’d cooked up, radio frequencies breaking up the path she’s marked from mouth to ear. it makes liv brave in her bitterness; she tosses the evidence folder across the table with a flick of her wrist, one hand in her pocket, the other bracing her weight.     ❝ the whole ‘throwing your voice’ thing? must be fun at parties. ❞

          they wouldn’t have found her if not for the anonymous tip. the cases the fringe division came across were often unsolvable by design, solvable by human error. this one, however, had proven to be one of their biggest challenges yet. they’d identified at least two other victims in similar fashion: talking one moment and gone the next, no warning, little reaction, their skulls flying like shrapnel through an unsuspecting room. walter had called it exciting when he’d first heard the news. he delighted in the strangeness of it, the facts and figures he picked from the bones of every mystery. peter had suggested a virus, astrid some sort of tech; it wasn’t until broyles had called that they’d confirmed what liv suspected all along: this horror was a man-made thing— another weapon built by hands built by god building a door to what they were never meant to grasp.

          olivia slides into the chair across @astremourante​, peeling the folder apart with purpose, the photos slapped in front of her accompanying her gaze. this is the part where the victims’ faces peer up at them, their bodies bent, cold and glazed at the eyes— but the woman had carved that opportunity out of the photos herself, leaving holes where the head should be. olivia’s not expecting remorse. deciphering the other’s ability would have to come second to the reason for it, especially with a target as big as the lead scientist at massive dynamic. call it grace, then, for that unexpected tip— for the chance to trap her before she’d even bared her teeth to bite. but liv had her own doubts about that good samaritan. there is such a thing as knowing too much, and whoever’d spilled that secret certainly did. maybe the woman knew who it was. maybe she didn’t. maybe, if coaxed from the corner she’d found herself in, they could stop something like this from happening again, stop something— anything— chip at the anxiety that liv presses to her breast when the weight of it all bogs her down. the selfishness of that is not lost on her, even if the selflessness of it is. what she knows and doesn’t know and what fills the time between forces her forward even here, even now, even always and always and always. so she balls her fist in her lap away from the other woman’s view, her eyes unwavering, her jaw set so she can’t stray from what she’s so carefully hidden.

General overview of Rhine

Oh god Rhine FINALLY gets some attention. It’s not much but it’s something alright. It’s about time HG stops obsessing over Kazimierz and Aegir/Iberia.

This does not contain all information about Rhine. It just compares and collates the new information with the stuff we know. This is quite a long post, so if you want, turn on this music while reading.

According to the new video, Rhine Lab consists of 10 sections.

Originium Art Section

The five to the right are the scientific research sections, and the four to the left are the general affair sections.

That aside, Saria’s skin speaks of a Research Branch and a General Jurisdiction Branch, a conflict between them and her participating in it. This may refer to these.

Components Control

The big square in the middle. It’s the core of the company.

Kirsten Wright - Her sprite first appeared in Dorothy’s Vision, and her personal details were not shared in the introductory video (and her sprite was obscured back then). She has a Phd in Particle Physics and is the co-founder together with Saria. She is the current head director in control, who also butted heads with Saria for some time. Currently, whatever’s between Saria and Kirsten is...interesting. The video says that she paved the way for Rhine and she has excellent entrepeneurship. 

Kirsten literally doesn’t remember the entire scuffle involving Ifrit at all (or at least claims so). She likely just began signing everything without even looking into it due to her priorities.

Kirsten’s codename is Control. She has lofty goals - her ultimate goal is uncovering Terra’s fake sky and exploring what’s beyond, as her parents were aeronauts who died in a test flight incident - in such a way that they overshadow ‘mundane’ goals, and isn’t at all concerned with controlling anything at this point. While it was assumed she was in danger during the events of Dorothy’s Vision, she wasn’t and was in a position to stop Ferdinand at all time.

Also, the fact that she’s a Perro and wants to go to space might very well reference Laika (even though she’s not based off the same dog physically).

Structural Division Section

This section analyzes the structure of which living beings consist of. It also conducts structural studies on biological molecules.

Ahrens Parvis - Director of the Structural division. First mentioned by Muelsyse in Mansfield Break, confirming that Silence was his protege. Silence also calls him her mentor (and Parvis still greets Silence cordially, even with the disapproval of the latter). According to Silence, he had no hand in Anthony’s prison break and did not know of it. He is an expert in this field and has experience for over 40 years. It’s said that he is a gentleman and has extreme persistence when it comes to research goals. From this visual, we can see that he’s a Caprinae, 168cm tall and from Leithania. 

This was also the guy who insisted on continuing the experiment with Ifrit all the way, as he saw the scientific progress he perceived as way more important than individual lives. In his view, giving your life for science is admirable. 

During Dorothy’s Vision, he stayed neutral, deciding to side with whatever side was the victor.

Olivia Silence - Former protege of Ahrens Parvis, the director of the Structural division. Currently serves as a Medic operator in Rhodes Island, using her last name as a codename. 

Silence was closely involved with the Flame Demon Incident. She couldn’t agree with Parvis’ ways anymore and decided to fake Ifrit’s death. This failed, however, and Saria - whom she once looked up to - was forced to nearly kill Ifrit. She did leave Rhine after all, however, joining Rhodes Island as well.

Joyce Moore - Tentatively placed here. A data analyst part of Olivia Silence’s medical team. Currently works as a Medic operator under the codename of Ptilopsis. She agreed with an experiment that would let her essentially become a human CPU to interpret Originium signals (Device #9). This experiment went awry, forced them to implement a chip inside her head that caused her to hear a certain voice.

Ptilopsis was not that involved in the Flame Demon Incident, due to herself undergoing a long treatment at Parvis’ suggestion, but has knowledge of the Incident. She is not allowed to talk about it due to the non-disclosure agreement.

Energy Section

This section studies/exploits originium, sunlight, geothermy, biothermy, as biological resources. It also researches the storage and applications of all kinds of energy. This section was behind HydeBro, in that HydeBro used Energy’s resources to try to assassinate Anthony.

Ferdinand Clooney - Mentioned in Mansfield Break. In there, he is referred to with and without name - when he is mentioned by name, his first is used. He had a hand in HydeBro coming after Anthony. Because the Energy section is close with Engineering, Silence initially kept this secret from Mayer. Mayer is scared of Ferdinand, though, and according to her, ‘[He] leave[s] quite an expression when [he] talk[s], but it still feels [...] like [he] care[s] more about the stuff we make and the value of that than about us ourselves’. This matches with what is said - he is agressive and confident in his approach to gain resources. From this visual, we see that he’s a Feline, 182cm tall, and born in Columbia.

This dude tried a whole lot during Dorothy’s Vision. He was intending to use the technology in use by Dorothy as a superweapon, even trying to usurp Kirsten but this plan got thwarted along with Dorothy’s, so he was eventually kicked out of Rhine. 

He was also the mentor of Astgenne.

Elena Urbica - Former protege of Ferdinand Clooney. Currently serves as a Caster operator at Rhodes Island under the codename of Astgenne, her birthname. She took on the name ‘Elena’ herself. She transferred to Rhodes Island after her work at Rhine was frozen without any possibility to restart.

Originium Art Section

This section deals with the principles (they made a spelling error here) and application of Originium Arts.

Dorothy Franks - The director of the Originium Art Section. From this visual, we see that she’s a Zalak (jerboa-based), 170cm tall and born in Columbia. Her personality is completely opposite from Ferdinand, being idealistic and determined. She wants to eliminate individual differences when it comes to handling Originium Arts.

Even though her ‘for science’ mindset is stated to be milder than the other named Rhine Lab scientists, she is still a force to be reckoned with. In her introductory event alone, she made a construct and intended to send everyone into it with their collective consciousness, as a place where everyone was equal and no one had to suffer. At the end of this event, she took this construct down, also preventing Ferdinand’s plans.

Currently serves as a Specialist operator at Rhodes Island with her codename being her first name.

Ecology Section

This section deals with evolution of Terra’s creatures, and how that relates to the environment.

Muelsyse - The director of the Ecology Section. We’ve met her formally in Mansfield Break after she first showed up in Operational Intelligence, preventing an outburst from Ifrit. She was also mentioned in Magallan’s files. Her nickname is MuMu, something Ifrit and Magallan both call her. She is highly implied to have an own agenda, but supports the control within Rhine. Her special talent is the creation and control of water, by manipulating the molecules in the air. She also utilizes this to make believable clones (as the human body mostly exists out of water). She is the only one who uses just one name at all, and her race as well as her birthplace are censored (likely to protect us from knowing more about the elf race). At least this says that she is 169cm tall. According to the voice, her name is pronounced ‘Mewl-seas’ (contrasting how I’ve been pronouncing it, which was roughly ‘Mo-ehl-sea-say’).

Muelsyse is currently the only known elf on Terra. It’s said that the race is dwindling.

Will likely join Rhodes Island to serve as a combat operator in an unknown class.

Scientific Investigation Section

This section investigates areas like the outmost borders of Terra. It wants to ‘bring back the unknown’. Currently, it is stationed in Northern Sami.

Magallan - It is very likely that Magallan works in this section. She currently works under a coorporation agreement with Rhodes Island, serving as a Supporter operator. Knows both Ifrit and Muelsyse, to the point that they had nicknames for eachother.

General Affairs Sections

The other four Sections are not given a director. Instead, they’re briefly described.

Business Section 

Does public affairs and communication.

Defense Section

Does R&D, related personnel security, informations disclosure and emergency handling. Mayer says that it is quite different from all other Sections.

Saria - Co-founder alongside Kirsten. Former Director of the Defense Section. Currently works as a Defender operator in Rhodes Island with her first name as a codename. Anthony’s escape is implied to take place right before she became one. 

She was closely involved with the Flame Demon Incident. After the failed attempt to fake Ifrit’s death, Saria had to engage Ifrit in a manner that nearly killed the girl. The bond between the three is strained as of currently, but as they are on Rhodes Island, they have opportunity to work things out slowly.

Engineering Section

Does mechanical design and the robotics of the R&D equipment. According to Mayer, the section is ‘generally only responsible for providing equipment or putting forward professional opinion when constructing said equipment [and they] don't really take initiative to understand the experiment itself’.

Lutra Studio - Mayer. She worked under this section, but left and became a Supporter operator at Rhodes Island. According to her, she left because she became less and less free to do her own thing from the moment that Engineering grew close to the Energy department. She does not know the exact details of the Incident, but she is aware of its results.

Astesia Urbica - A philological consultant. Currently a Guard operator at Rhodes Island. Her sister Elena came with her to Rhodes for treatment. Said sister also works at Rhine.

Speculative members

Sesa - It is highly likely that either he, his brother or even both of them were part of Rhine Lab at some point or worked together with them. This remains mere speculation but there are some aspects to him that imply this. They are too in-depth and numerous to explain here, however.
