Before we move onto the basic mechanics of the game, a quick note on lore.

Requiem is, at its core, a game about religion.

This was inspired by the fact that I happened to be reading A Canticle for Leibowitz at the same time I saw my partner perform a German mass with her choir. I also grew up Catholic, so it feels like a ripe well for me to draw from.

But the game isn't really about religion. It's about uncovering a mystery.

And, of course, beating up some baddies in classic RPG style.

In this imagined world, you are part of a leftist monastic order who have sworn off the trappings of gender in order to better serve God with your whole selves.

Several hundred of your kin (and you'll see that word, kin, used in place of Brother or Sister) live on the planet after your forebears arrived on a generation ship sent in a desperate attempt to preserve Catholicism in the wake of Earth's climate-based destruction.

Isoldia is an icy, unforgiving planet. You subsist on mushrooms and lichen, and most of your day is spent farming. That is, until...

STORY:

You, kin, have committed a crime. (What crime? You'll get to decide.) You, like so many before you, have been sentenced to hard labor at the Weeping Well - a massive excavation in the ice that is constantly shifting and changing It goes so far into the ground you can't see the bottom.

You know little to nothing about the Well except that it was left behind by the aliens who lived on this planet some millennia before you arrived.

The only clue they left behind was a sort of Rosetta Stone which included text in Aramaic, and an exhortation to enter the Well and seek your reward.

You, kin, are deemed quiet capable. The Archbishop has taken interest in you. So the question is presented: what lengths will you now go to for this reward, and what will you be willing to sacrifice along the way?

All of this, of course, is subject to change at the whim of mechanics and story. These were some of the thoughts I quickly jotted down sitting in a pew, listening to that German mass.

It won't be a preachy game, but neither will it be a jocular one.

The trick I have to deal with now is making sure that the RPG/rogue-lite mechanics in some way elevate the story.

Transportasi tercepat dan termurah dari bandara menuju pusat kota adalah RENFE Train dan Metro. Saat itu, saya naik RENFE train menuju Passeig de Gracia. Kereta ini juga berhenti di Barcelona Sants Station.

Saya memilih RENFE dibanding Metro karena stasiun pemberhentiannya lebih sedikit. Waktu tempuhnya jadi lebih cepat, sekitar 25 menit. Keretanya berangkat antar bandara-pusat kota tiap 30 menit sekali. Harga tiketnya 4.20 Euro | Rp. 67,000. Pretty cheap right? Jauh lebih murah dibanding kereta bandara di negara Eropa lainnya.

How to get around Barcelona?

Salah satu kota favorit saya untuk berjalan kaki dan naik transportasi umum. MRT disini yang disebut Metro begitu cepat, murah, dan menjangkau tiap sudut kota.

Metro buka dari jam 5 pagi sampai 12 malam.

Kalo hari Jumat buka sampai jam 2 pagi.

Khusus hari Sabtu buka 24 jam

Ada 1-day, 2-day dan 3-day tickets. Ada juga T10, Ticket yang berlaku untuk 10 kali naik Metro. Harganya lebih murah dari Single Ticket dan bisa dipake rame-rame. Worth it kalo kamu naik metro, tram, atau bus ke banyak tempat lebih dari 5 kali sehari. Kalo cuma sekali dua kali selebihnya banyak jalan kaki, mending beli single tickets.

Is Barcelona a safe place to travel? 

Barcelona is a safe city but watch your wallet! Saya hampir aja kecurian waktu menuruni tangga kereta bawah tanah sehabis pulang dari Sagrada Familia. Untungnya saat itu saya masih merasakan retsleting backpack saya dibuka perlahan. Saat kejadian itu, saya langsung menengok kebelakang dan berkata ‘What the…’ Lalu dengan lempengnya dua gadis muda melewati saya. Cantik-cantik copet!

Saya buru-buru mengecek dompet yang ada di retsletting bagian dalam tas. Untungnya, dia belum sempat membuka full. Lega barang bawaan masih lengkap, saya tetap berjalan sambil memperhatikan dua gadis itu masuk ke lift, mengunyah permen karet sambil menatap ponsel seakan tidak terjadi apa-apa.

Saya ngalamin sendiri dan beruntung pas ga bengong. Bahaya kalo dihipnotis lalu disuruh selingkuh. Uya Kuya abis. Ga kebayang ribetnya kalo sampe kehilangan dompet. Saya sedikit menganggap remeh karena sebelumnya merasa aman-aman saja selama 16 hari di Eropa. Intinya simpan dompet, ponsel, dan barang berharga dengan hati-hati.

Where do i stay in Barcelona?

Fitur keren dari hostel ini adalah fingerprint scanner-nya. Sidik jari kita dipindai dulu waktu check in. Masuk kamar ga perlu pake kartu, cukup tempel jempol ke scanner disebelah pintu. Canggih! Selain itu, lokasinya berada di sentral. Jadi gampang kemana-mana. Hampir semua wisata utama bisa ditempuh dengan berjalan kaki.

If you order Latte, they give you a glass of milk and an espresso in an iron teapot

Saya gak terlalu suka rasanya, blenyek-blenyek eneg gitu. Beda sama cream cheese ala Cheese Tart Jepang yang super yummy. Yang unik malah latte-nya, secangkir susu disajikan terpisah dengan espresso di dalam teko. Biasanya kan susu yang dituangin ke kopi, ini kebalikannya, kopi yang dituangin ke susu.

2. Admiring Sagrada Familia

LA SAGRADA FAMÍLIA means The Basílica of the Holy Family. The massive “sea sponge spires” dominated Barcelona’s skyline. The incredible detailed sculptures on the exterior of Sagrada Familia

Antoni Gaudi, the genius behind this magnificent structure

Karya Gaudi paling mempesona namun penuh teka-teki. Katedral yang pembangunannya terus berlanjut sejak 140 tahun yang lalu sampai sekarang. Diperkirakan selesai tahun 2026, tepat  satu abad kematian sang arsitek.

Gaudi meninggal dalam sebuah kecelakaan, ditabrak tram dalam rutinitas kesehariannya. Untuk menghargai maha karyanya yang brilian, Gaudi dimakamkan di ruang bawah tanah Sagrada Familia.

Dari luar, gereja ini terlihat seperti Kastil pasir yang dibangun oleh raksasa. Puncak menara utamanya yang berpori mencapai ketinggian 170 meter. Tak tertandingi oleh gereja manapun di dunia.

I love seeing churches throughout Europe. I wasn’t expect this one to be so different from what I’ve seen. Well, i was wrong. There’s no other cathedral that has unique design and living architecture like this!

Berbekal tiket yang dibeli online, saya langsung menuju pintu masuk. Menunjukkan barcode tiket untuk dipindai petugas, melewati security check sekelas bandara dan melangkahkan kaki ke dalam main sanctuary.

Begitu masuk, mata saya berbinar ke langit. Hamparan kubah bersinar megah bersama cahaya warna-warni menawan dari stained glass. Pilar penyanggahnya seperti pohon yang tumbuh dari tanah. Ukiran dan ornamen yang membuat saya seperti berada di hutan belantara yang futuristik. Sungguh spektakuler!

A unique embodiment of Jesus Christ’s life is all around the temple. Parachuting Jesus, one of the church’s most controversial details. 

Inspirasi yang datang dari alam. Desain struktur yang mengalir seperti benar-benar hidup. Gaudi pernah berkata ‘There are no straight lines in nature’, sama seperti desainnya yang hanya menggunakan sedikit garis lurus. Desain yang menghubungkan alam dan tradisi dengan kemegahan masa depan.

I thought this was just going to be another touristy church. Well, it wasn’t. This is the most beautiful man-made creation ever built. This surpassed my wildest dreams. My eyes shone with pure joy and excitement. Ancient yet futuristic!

Sangat berbeda dari Katedral di Eropa lainnya yang pernah saya lihat. Gaudi memang visioner inovatif yang tidak hanya out of the box, melainkan creator of that box. Ga kebayang bisa desain kaya gini di jaman dulu. It is a must see for anyone no matter what your spiritual beliefs are.

Konon Gaudi bertujuan untuk mempersatukan cinta. Nature was once the core. For all of us. Bukan hanya sekedar Katedral, melainkan Temple for all. ‘Universal belief’ Tempat suci untuk semua orang dari berbagai agama, warna, bahasa, dan budaya, bersama-sama menatap surga dengan rasa kagum yang sama.

The treasure is hidden inside. The architecture is phenomenal. The colors were mouth dropping. Such a majestic and charming place. There’s so much to stare for hours on end.

Tips

Sagrada Familia selalu ramai. Jangan membuang waktu dengan antri membeli tiket ditempat. Beli tiket secara online dengan memiilih tanggal dan jam yang kamu kehendaki.

Saat itu saya memilih waktu masuk 15:00 – 15:15. Menjelang waktu tutup jam 6, jangan buru-buru pergi. Ada kesempatan berfoto tanpa cendol karena pengunjung lain sudah pulang.

No wonder they are taking so much time to finish it. Sagrada Familia is amazing inside and out. There’s no photo could be judge to the majesty of this marvel. Just go and experience it by yourself! I was looking at it standing tall and imagine Gaudi drawing every detail

3. Wake up early and walking around in the morning

Waking up is the hardest part, but it’s worth it. Get up before everyone else and have the city for yourself. Saya melewati alun-alun, taman dan gang-gang sempit. Keliling-keliling tanpa map dan tersihir dengan apa yang saya lihat di tiap tikungan. Menikmati matahari yang perlahan terbangun dari sela-sela bangunan tua. Kesunyian yang cantik.

4. Explore the famous local market: St. Josep La Boqueria

The market first born as an unofficial meat market in 1217, though at the time it was known as Mercat de la Palla. In 1853, the official site of La Boqueria opened in la Rambla. Today, over 200 stalls sell their products, making it one of the largest markets in Europe

Saat jalan-jalan pagi, paling seru mampir ke pasar tertua di Spanyol. Tua-tua gaul, food market ini didesain modernista ala abad ke-19. Saya mengamati pedagang mulai membuka lapak, mencium aroma ikan, dan foto-foto produk yang mereka jual.

Ada cheese, chocolate, ice cream, nachos, tacos, kacang-kacangan, buah-buahan, daging ham, jeroan, telur dan berbagai bumbu makanan. Ikan-ikan segar sebesar telapak tangan dipajang diatas tumpukan es. Lobster, kepiting, udang, cumi-cumi, setia menemani. Lanskap dan budaya suatu kota memang mempengaruhi jenis kulinernya.

Yang  nyentrik adalah kios daging babinya. Potongan daging khas matador yang disebut Jamon, digantung tinggi-tinggi di kios. Lengkap dengan tukang jagal yang lagi mempertontonkan keahliannya memotong daging.

5. Treat yourself a Baby Squid at the best Tapaz Bar, Quim de la Boqueria

Di pasar ini terdapat banyak tapas bar yang khusus menjual beragam hidangan porsi kecil. Biasanya campuran antara roti dengan berbagai macam bahan baku seperti ham, tuna, salmon, ayam, sayur dan kacang-kacangan, sampai omelette dengan seafood, keju, acar, dan buah zaitun. Budaya ngemil orang Spanyol yang jadi tren di bar-bar lokal.

It’s fun watching the staff cooking right in front of you. Once you are seated, you will be given a pencil and a paper menu where u circle what you want and give it back to them.

The foods and drinks are as fresh as it gets. May be a little bit pricey, but you get what you pay for

Eggs and baby squid fried with olive oil, garlic, chilly pepper, maldon salt and black pepper. Mamamia! Eggs were runny and baby squids were also fresh. It was so buttery and delicious, 100% satisfied!

Setelah duduk, saya melingkari pesanan di kertas menu dan mengembalikannya kepada waiter. Tak lama kemudian, datanglah Cappuccino, Orange Juice, dan hidangan utama fried eggs with baby squid! ‘Hmmm…’ asap tipis mengudara bersama aroma cumi yang tercium lezat. Kolesterol yang indah!

Telur setengah matang dan cumi-cumi mungil yang habis digoreng dengan minyak zaitun, bawang putih, cabai, garam dan lada hitam. Kuning telurnya meleleh ketika dibelah. Dengan garpu ditangan kiri, saya memasukkan cumi berlumur telur kedalam mulut. Paduan rasa gurih, lembut dan kenyal seakan menyerbu. 100% Mamamia! 

Chewy-able fresh squid berselancar cantik di lidah lalu meluncur mulus ke perut. Kebahagiaan pun melahirkan. Anthony Bourdain pernah berkata, kota kuliner favoritnya setelah Hongkong adalah Barcelona. Well, after eating this baby squid, i think i’m kinda agree. But still, Barcelona is the second after Rome.

6. Walking along Las Ramblas

The most famous street to stroll is a pedestrianized, tree-lined boulevard that has many shops, restaurants and bars, with a lot of market stalls. It’s lively!

Jalan lurus sepanjang 1.2 km ini merupakan pusat perbelanjaan dan hiburan legendaris. Saya menyusuri deretan toko, hotel, restoran, dengan arsitektur klasik. Suasana hiruk pikuk pertunjukan seni jalanan melebur bersama tepuk tangan turis.

Area ini juga dipadati toko pernak-pernik. Kamu bisa hunting oleh-oleh seperti Jersey Barca, lukisan Picasso, Oli sal Virgin Olive Oil, Artisan Vermouth (Aromatic Liquor) dan Turron (Nougat kacang khas Spanyol).

7. Tour Camp Nou

I’m not a fan of Barcelona but this stadium is simply huge and amazing

Barcelona FC sudah seperti agama bagi penduduk Catalunya. Mereka melakukan ‘kebaktian’ di setiap pertandingan. Bersatu meneriakkan yel-yel di stadion terbesar di Eropa yang berkapasitas 99,354 orang!

Meskipun bukan penggemar Barca, saya sangat menikmati tur stadionnya. Aksesnya mudah dan nyaman. Saya merasakan first class experience dengan sentuhan emosional yang menyenangkan.

It lets you go everywhere! Saya mengawali tur dengan memasuki museum yang berisi trofi-trofi asli pencapaian Barcelona, dari jaman baheula sampe sekarang. Mulai dari trofi liga Champions, liga Spanyol, Copa Del Rey, sampai Golden Boots dan Ballon d’Or milik Messi. Saya juga bisa melihat foto-foto dan sejarah perjalanan Barcelona.

Saya sebenarnya lebih suka Ronaldo, karena dia pernah main di Manchester United. Tapi saya jauh lebih suka tur stadion Barcelona daripada Madrid. Terkesan lebih rapi, berkelas dan mewah.

Setelah itu saya memasuki tempat duduk stadion di bagian atas, melihat hijaunya rumput stadion Barcelona. Gila si, rumputnya bener-bener alus dan terawat sempurna. Pantes aja Messi bisa giring bola dengan gesit. Coba dia bermain di rumput yang bergoyang, pasti galau.

Saya duduk sejenak, minta tolong teman yang baru saya kenalan buat fotoin, lalu pose sorak sorai bergembira. Pertandingan pun berakhir dengan kemenangan imajinasi. Saya mencetak goal kemenangan dan dielu-elukan bak pahlawan.

Setelah itu saya melewati lorong menuju lapangan layaknya pemain beneran, duduk di kursi pelatih, masuk ke ruang konferensi pers, sampai memasuki ruang ganti pemain. Unforgettable experience! Satu-satunya yang saya lewatkan cuma melihat Messi mencetak goal, dan merayakan euforia bersama penonton lainnya.

Terakhir ada Mega Store yang menjual berbagai macam pernak-pernik official Barcelona. Mulai dari jersey, jaket, syal, topi, gantungan kunci, botol minum, komplit plit plit plit. Camp Nou memang surga bagi pecinta Barca.

8. Get higher at the Park Guel

Wander through the gardens and take your time looking at all of the uniquely colorful sculptures and mosaics around the park. Try to go here as soon as it opens, around 8AM.

Is that a Gingerbread house? it feels more like a candy land. Teritorinya Big Mom One Piece. Warna-warna candy dari  patung dan mosaik nyentrik menghiasi sepanjang taman. Kreativitas Gaudi berhasil menciptakan taman gaul yang unik, membentuk kota Barcelona dengan caranya sendiri.

Park Güell dulunya gratis dikunjungi, seiring popularitasnya, sistem tiket berdasarkan jam pun diberlakukan. Tujuannya biar tamu nyaman dan ga terlalu berjubelan. Selain ‘Zona Monumental’, bagian taman lainnya tetap bisa gratis dikunjungi.

Dari atas bukit, kamu bisa melihat mininya Sagrada Familia dan gedung-gedung pencakar langit. Panorama 360° kota Barcelona terlihat menakjubkan. Kalo bisa sih, datang menjelang matahari terbenam, pastinya bakal lebih cantik. Hari itu saya salah datang siang-siang, matahari terasa sengit membakar kulit.

Well worth the long walk up the hill to reach the cross. The craftsmanship and artistic flow makes you want to stay and admire every piece of the art!

It’s a big park situated at a hill top and whole of Barcelona can be viewed from the top. You need to walk a lot if you want to see everything

9. Take a peek at Casa Milla

Casa Milà also known as La Pedrera – the stone quarry. A dazzlingly mansion whose tiered facade and waving stone balconies resembled a sand mountain. It was built in the early 1900’s by Gaudí and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its uniqueness and artistic value

Bangunannya terlihat seperti istana padang pasir, bergelombang seperti ombak. Memisahkan diri dengan bagunan-bangunan tegak lurus disebelahnya. Seperti Bad Boy diantara anak alim. A masterpiece of nature. Seni yang terinspirasi dari perpaduan alam dan sains.

Casa Milla merupakan rumah pribadi terakhir yang dirancang oleh Gaudi. Idenya yang brilian menjadikan dia arsitek favorit Crazy Rich Rodrigo. Kalo ga ada waktu atau ga rela bayar 40 Euro buat masuk, mengagumi keindahannya dari luar sudah cukup menyenangkan.

Passeig de Gràcia was the most beautiful street in Barcelona. The tree-lined boulevard that has finest theatres and cinemas, the most exclusive shops, restaurants and cafés

Passeig de Gràcia, Champs-Élysées versi Barcelona. Surga belanja barang-barang bermerek di jalan terindah Barcelona. Sepanjang mata memandang terlihat Jimmy Choo, Prada, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Cartier, dan Longchamp.

Trotoar luas berjejer rapi dengan pepohonan di jalanan lurus yang panjang. Jika kamu melihat kota ini dari atas, maka akan terlihat blok-blok persegi yang seragam. Pola kota Grid yang mirip ikon aplikasi di iPhone. Desain maha karya arsitek Spanyol, Ildefons Cerda.
