I’ll obviously do both because FUCK IT, I love this rabid, selfish, piece of shit, conniving, EXTRA AF thief for no reason.

- Favorite thing about them: His shrewdness, his thorough planning, his social-engineering skills and goal-driven personality. Without any plot-armored fool getting in his way, he'd be unstoppable. Like Takehito Koyasu said "He does bad things with all his might[...] because he has a lot of things he wants to do.", he doesn't half-ass anything.

- Least favorite thing about them: His ego just keeps getting on his way to victory. He literally failed TWICE because he stopped to boast instead of confirming the kill and moving on. Also the Dog thing. Unforgiveable.

- Favorite line: "You should have chosen your words better." when negotiating with the to-be-zombie mom. He kept his word, you were just out-witted. Also...not exactly because of the line, but the way Takehito Koyasu pronounces it. When talking with Poco's sister, she mutters a "monster..." and Dio just goes "Eh? Couldn't hear that." In the SOFTEST, HEAT-MELTING WAY POSSIBLE. Hhhhnngg.

-brOTP: He has no bros. He hates everyone. /hj But I want to think that he appreciated Tarkus a little bit more for his obedience and the historic value. HE WAS ALSO A MASSIVE MAN, Hokuto-no-ken-foe-sized. Tarkus was stalwart 'till the end and did not fall for Jonathan's hero charm.

-OTP:

-nOTP: JonaDio. Just...no. It's Killing Stalking all over again, but with buff men. Jonathan deserves something not toxic for the few Dio-free months he has. He's suffered enough.

-Random headcanon: Fangs work the same way fingers do when feeding (prehensile artery using the gap made by nail/teeth to syphon blood into Vampire's bloodstream) but he uses his fingers mostly because the blood comming people with subpar health conditions tastes icky to him. It's Victorian England, you're bound to find more sick people than not, so instead of relying in his "this is bad for you" tastebud sensors, he just fingers them for a quick fill.

-Unpopular opinion: (Unpopular for a Dio Simp) I'm glad Jonathan decided to stop being a doormat and fucked him up. HE SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT WAY EARLIER IN THE SERIES. Too bad he went back into doormating as soon as George sent him to his room. -Song I associate with them: Kurayami no Kokoro by Hayato Matsuo. What?

- Favorite thing about them: Matured version of Part 1 Dio, he seems calmer, smarter and more careful. He has a bigger, grander goal now. His drive to learn more about the world around him, from both past and future. His unending thirst for knowledge.

- Least favorite thing about them: Dio, honey, STOP BOASTING. THAT GOT YOU KILLED. AGAIN. There was no reason to toy with Polnareff putting him a few steps down when you could have just killed him. Same with Nukesaku, why put him in the coffin when you could have beheaded any of them during that time stop?! Also, STOP SENDING YOUR AGENTS ONE AT A TIME. Outnumber the Crusaders instead!

- Favorite line: Anything voiced by God Takehito Koyasu. "You fell for it, Jotaro! This is my escape route! I, DIO, have outsmarted you! Doesn't this street look familiar?" HAH! Talk about 4D Chess planning.

-brOTP: Dio has no bros, only hoes to cater to his every whim. /hj Leaving Pucci aside because he's the canon brOTP and the easiest answer, I think he's pretty pleased with Vanilla... I mean, he revived him with his precious blood. Going more into HC territory, I'd pick both D'Arby borthers, as they're basically the ones in charge of the manor's management and administrative side of Dio's whorehouse "agency". They're the backbone of his stablishment and I believe that even Dio can acknowledge and reward their services.

-OTP:

-nOTP: DioXKakyoin or DioXJotaro. Both are minors, the Kakyoin one has big non-con implications and the Jotaro one has a side serving of incest thanks to the prostetic body Dio is rocking. It's personally ....disturbing.

-Random headcanon: The 100-year underwater beauty sleep made Dio develop a few phobias compared to his part 1 version. Claustrophobia (have you seen his "room"?! He sleeps in an open hallway!!), cryophobia (another one of the reasons of why he chose to stay in Egypt and never did his "freezing" move bullshit again), Pyrophobia (he literally "died" twice by fire.) He has constant nightmares about both his failure or his stay inside the not-leakproof coffin and can't sleep more than 2-3 hours at a time. He also can no longer stomach solid food.

-Unpopular opinion: Dio would make a terribly BAD parent. He'd rubberband between week-long neglection, enabling bad behaviour, teaching the kid unethical life hacks, yelling at them for the smallest reasons and spoiling the kid. When confronted about his poor parenting or the kid's problematic attitude, he'll blame everyone else but himself or his kid. Sorry Mudad fans.

Well the wooden raised bed is built. But I nearly punched my father in the face in the process.

So you guys saw my meticulously measured, thought out, & drawn plans for this bed a couple posts ago, right? Well I sat down multiple times & explained those plans in great detail to my dad to make sure they were feasible. I answered questions he had. I was VERY clear regarding my plans. He told me multiple times that what I planned would hold up.

So I meticulously research what wood I want to use & it's size. Calculate how many of each size cut I need, how many of those I can get from 1 plank, how many total planks I need. I write it all down VERY plainly & clearly, then dispatched him yesterday to go purchase it & have the cuts made with my debit card.

He comes home with it all, puts it in the dining room so I can assemble the front, back, side, & bottom panels before dragging it all outside to put them together without getting heat stroke. So I'm chugging along, listening to music & competently wielding power tools (which is something I love).

Then I reach the bottom panel & because of how I planned for it to be constructed, I ask for his help on one end to make it easier. He comes in & looks at it & asks me to explain AGAIN how it will all go together... then proceeds to make the way the bottom gets connected significantly more complicated and bulldozed over me insisting it had to be done that way.

Fine.

It gets assembled just as The Spawn & The Bf walk in. The Bf immediately goes "What are y'all doing? I wanna help!" So I tell him after he & The Spawn have dinner, he can help with assembly.

We get everything set up outside for assembly & I hand my dad the drill with a bit in it to pre-drill. This fool looks at me like I'm stupid & says "I thought we were just using the 3 in wood screws that we assembled each piece with...?"

No you half listening fuckwit! This has to hold an enormous amount of weight so we are putting the structure together with the same screws that I used for the Jasmine bed, which you need to pre-drill for AND which you should know about since I explained this multiple times before we got the wood and at least twice that same day!

He huffs and puffs. So the front, back, & sides are all attached to each other. He goes to slide in the bottom. It's very resistant to going in & I tell him that with what he decided to do, it now doesn't fit & that he's pulling the sides apart.

"No no it's just a tight fit." Then one side almost completely comes off the structure. He huffs and puffs saying he has to unscrew & adjust the boards that HE altered. The best part? He had me attach those to the long boards that run the length of the bottom with a screw on each side... so he has to unscrew 6 per end. And not once did I offer help. I sat my ass on the couch while he unscrewed, adjusted (back to my ORIGINAL PLANS), and reattached each end.

Lo and behold it slid right in the way it was meant to! Snug but not a struggle! Then this mother fucker tried to tell me AGAIN that the 3 inch wood screws would be fine for attaching the piece that bears literally all of the weight & he assumed we'd be using those.

Nope. Once again, had he listened to me at all over the course of the 4 discussions prior to the day of & the 5 or 6 more discussions as it was being assembled, he would know exactly what screws we were using and why.

It finally got put together but there's a gap on one end between the end piece & the back because of his fuck up.

For the next 2 hrs he kept going on and on about how to 'fix' it. I spent that 2 hours saying "No. That won't work. I'll figure it out." Finally, I had enough & snapped that I didn't want to talk about the fucking planter because frankly it illustrated exactly how little he fucking listens to me & his advice caused all the fucking problems to begin with so I'm CERTAINLY not taking his advice on how to fix what he broke.

Later he apologized because "I know I can be annoying sometimes." No bro. Not annoying. A know it all that doesn't listen and doesn't ACTUALLY know as much as he thinks he does. But I didn't say that.

Oh! Also learned when it was being put in place that he decided that I had mis-measured & added 4 inches of length to all the long boards for the front, back, and bottom. So I had to very quickly destroy the brick bed I made the other night but thankfully hadn't filled. Yeah.

Never ever involving him on a project like that again. I will ask the internet for advice instead.

The beast of a planter (that needs to be moved & leveled but we were all exhausted & I think the kids could tell that I was about to pick up a 2x6 & hit my dad in the face with it)

Let’s Rank Snifits!

Hello! Snifits are my favorite Mario enemy! To share my love for them, I’m going to go through the entire extended Snifit family, and score them all on a scale from 1 - 10 for your reading pleasure!!

The OG Snifit

Perfect! 10/10!! How could you improve upon such a great design?? Well, you’ll see soon enough, but Snifits are the ultimate being in any form. They’re like Shy Guys, which are already great and wonderful - but Snifit benefits from the addition of a little snoot!!! All creatures could be improved with a snoot, I think. Snifit’s snoot especially looks both boopable and smoochable. I wish I had a Snifit plush. Anyway, let’s move on to some of their friends and get started under the cut!

Spookum

So, weirdly, to start things off, Snifits aren’t called Snifits in Super Mario RPG!! They’re called Spookums! I’m not sure why, but it’s kind of cute, I guess?? This is still pretty much just a Snifit, just with a less cute and evocative name. 9/10.

Snifit, Again

So, I lied!! Sorry!! There actually are enemies called “Snifit” in Super Mario RPG, but they aren’t your standard rank and file Snifits in this game! There are only eight of them, and they’re minibosses!! At least, that’s my understanding from the mario wiki. I haven’t actually gotten that far in Mario RPG yet! I’m bad at video games. Snifits four through seven are actually promoted in-game from Spookums to Snifits if you lose to them in battle, though! That’s a really cool mechanic, and I’d love to see things like that more often in video games. I also like the idea that the colour of the Snifit denotes rank, with black being the strongest. Overall, despite just being a black variant of a normal Snifit, I like these ones just a little bit more than your average Snifit! I just think they’re neat! 10.5/10!!!

Whistle Snifit, Slurp Snifit, and Spike Snifit

Sorry, I lumped these guys all together because they’re kind of just normal Snifits wearing accessories!! They’re all from Paper Mario: Colour Splash. 6/10 for the whole set. I love them all very much but they could stand to be a bit more adventurous!! I like the Spike Snifit the most because they’re wearing a cute little hat and also don’t have something stuffed into their snoot. Why would you put something into an already perfect snoot?? It looks uncomfortable. I like that the one with the straw is called a Slurp Snifit, though!! Slurp is a fun word. Also, these guys all come in red, blue, green, yellow, and pink! Yellow and pink are my favorite colours though, so I used those ones to make up for them being kind of boring :3

Chariot Snifit

Hey, this one is just in a car!! That’s somehow both worse and better than the last few from Colour Splash. It gets half a point though for teaming up with a Chain Chomp, which is another favorite of mine. 8.5/10!!!

Snifaro

Aaaaaaaa!!!!!! Look at these two pals!!! I love them!! The Snifaro is actually just a regular sized Snifit with a cool pharaoh mask standing on top of a regular Snifit inside of a sarcophagus!! The Super Mario Wiki says that one of their attacks features Snifit hopping on top of Snifaro’s sarcophagus and riding it like a surfboard. That’s wonderful and perfect! Take notes, Colour Splash Snifits!! This is how you accessorize!!! 10/10!!

Ice Snifit

Take a look at these two!! They are so adorable and look so warm in their little winter coats!!!! I like the walking head version used in the original Mario+Luigi Superstar Saga a lot, but the more standard looking version in the remakes are impossibly adorable. I would give the original Ice Snifit a 10/10, and the revamped one a 11/10!!! It’s quite possibly my favorite Snifit design.

Ice Snifit, Again

For some reason, this is the only image of these guys on the Mario Wiki, but they’re just as adorable as the previous Ice Snifits!!! Yoshi’s Wooly World is, aesthetically speaking, one of the best Mario games of all time. Possibly the best game ever? It’s too bad that it’s such an easy game. Regardless, this Snifit is on par with the last Ice Snifits, but for whatever reason I like the redesign in Superstar just a liiiiitle bit more. 10.5/10!

Toy Snifit

Absolutely lovely!! I’m not sure if these pals come in different colours, and I’ve never played the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, but this Snifit makes me want to check them out!!! I’d like a real life wind-up toy of this Snifit. Let’s make it happen, Nintendo!! 9/10!!

Scorchit

Very cute! Kind of plain though. Sorry, Scorchit, but simply spitting out fire won’t put you on the same level as Ice Snifit!! It’s also apparently called “Zeus Guy” in the manual for Yoshi’s Island DS? That’s a cute name! I feel like it would fit better if this Snifit spat out lightning bolts instead of fire, though! I like that it’s pink. 7/10

Laser Snifit and Gunner Guy

Ohhhhhohohohohoho!!!!! Ohohoho!!!! This is where the real fun begins!!! Look at these friends!!!! I love them!!!! This is what Slurp Snifit up there should have been!! The snout is the defining trait of Snifits, and these two have bumped it up to eleven!!! Apparently Gunner Guy can’t move on his own, though, which is heartbreaking. Also, he might not actually be a Snifit??? He might be a Shy Guy with a gun on his face! Is that what all Snifits are? Are they the same thing? I choose to believe they aren’t, and the snout is somehow biologically part of their face along with the rest of the mask. I’m rambling, though. Laser Snifit earns an 11/10 from me, while Gunner Guy gets an 8/10 for making me feel sad while still somehow being delightful.

Propeller Mucho

What the heck?!  What a whimsical name!! Unfortunately, this is the only image of them on the Mario Wiki, but they still look pretty cute to me! I imagine they’re the same as Fly Guys, but like. Snifits. I love the idea that Shy Guys and Snifits are kind of mechanical or toy-like in nature. Maybe that’s why they live in the toy box in Paper Mario??? Anyways, 6/10. I wish I could see them better! They would have scored higher, but they’re outdone by.......

Flying Snifit

A friend with a way less whimsical name,  but a way more whimsical appearance!! Look at those wings!!!! Most Mario enemies, when given the gift of flight, have cute little angel wings slapped onto them - but not Flying Snifit!! No, instead, this little garden buddy sprouts a pair of adorable cartoon butterfly wings!!  I adore this Snifit!! They’re going to get a whopping 11/10 from me! We aren’t done with Flying Snifit just yet, however, because they also show up with a couple of friends!!

Flifit and Sneed

I told you our garden party wasn’t over yet!! These are also easily some of the most inventive varieties of Snifit!! There are only a couple of others that stray from the general Snifit body plan, and these two are both some of the weirdest and cutest!! God, I love them. Flifit spits out Sneed, which in turn spits out (presumably inanimate) seeds! I love whatever the heck Sneed is doing in that animation. I choose to interpret it as a little butt waggle. Shake it, Sneed!! For both of these friends, I’m handing out a solid 10/10!!!

Snufit

So, like I said before, there are only a couple of Snifit-adjacent friends that change up the general body plan that is Snifit! Snufits are ghost Snifits that live in Hazy Maze Cave in Super Mario 64!! They’re very cute, but when I was little I was actually kind of afraid of them? I’m not sure why! In the original game on the Nintendo 64, Snufit was round and shaped like a Boo, which is pretty cute! I love the idea that all ghosts in the Mario universe are just big round balls of ghostliness. This version of Snufit gets an 8/10! It’s pretty cute, but the redesign of Snufit in the DS version is so much more appealing to me, for some reason! I think it’s the floppy little sleeves. As someone who always wore sweaters that were much too big for me and always seemed to have “puppy paws” as my mom would call them, this new Snufit just calls to me. Also, shouldn’t these guys have been called Spookums?? I guess Mario RPG did come out before Mario 64, but it wouldn’t be the first time some weird name shenanigans had gone down in the Mario universe. Anyways, the redesign of Snufit gets an 11/10 from me!! It’s up there with Ice Snifit and Flying Snifit as one of my favorites!!

Spider

Hey, these guys aren’t even in any of the games!! I think that should change though. I like them a lot!! Pretty creepy, and bizarre, though! I used to watch The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! a fair amount when i was little, but I must have missed whichever episode these guys appeared in. I think I would have remembered them for the rest of my life if I had!! I used to be really afraid of spiders when I was little. I think they’re really neat now though!! Still, I’m only going to give these guys an 8/10 for virtue of never being used in a game, and also for being kind of creepy and also for not having eight legs. I know that stuff isn’t their fault! It’s just the way things are sometimes. Life is cruel, especially to spiders.

Spiky Snifit

Okay, these guys are the last of the official Snifit friends! I probably should have put them up with Flifit, but I wanted them to stand on their own. I love cacti a lot, being from a desert, and saguaro cacti are just the best!! I also love how Flifit seems to have their mask organically growing from their stem, but Spiky here could easily just be a normal cactus with a Snifit mask slapped onto it!! Does it have a face underneath?? Is it literally just a cactus??? Could you make anything into a Snifit by putting a mask onto it??? Spiky Snifit here raises a lot of questions, and answers literally none of them, and for that I love them. 9.5/10!! 

Finally, I would like to give an honorable mention to one other Mario enemy that I think has been unfairly left behind and forgotten. Let’s take a moment to remember a dear friend....

Tweeter

Tweeter is an enemy that debuted in Doki Doki Panic/ Super Mario Bros 2 alongside Shy Guy, Snifit, Bob-omb, Birdo, and many other friends that we all know, love, and continually see in Mario games even today!! Unfortunately, unlike many of the other enemies from Mario 2, Tweeter hasn’t really ever shown up again! They make the occasional cameo here and there, but even those are few and far between!! Why haven’t Tweeters ever shown up again?? It’s unclear, but they’re also pretty high up on my list of favorite mario enemies! It turns out I just love masks and snoots, especially if that snoot is also a beak. If I were to give these guys a score, and I will, I would give them a 100/100!! Gone, but never forgotten (by me).

SFW Complete:

The Invisible Girl [sonamae]: OK SO it’s Hagakure-centric, with background Hagakure x Shouji and KiriBaku. My favorite part about this is that the romance is important, but not the focus. The focus of this oneshot is on the family she creates with Bakugou, Satou, Todoroki, Kirishima, and Tokoyami. Go read it, it’s great. BIG BROTHER BAKUGOU FTW!!!!!

Ground Zero [sonamae]: Speaking of Big Brother Bakugou, this is the next oneshot in the same series as the above one, but from Bakugou’s pov. Again, the romance is important but not a focus, and that’s so fucking refreshing and I love it so mUCH idk what else to tell you. Just go read these two. The rest of the series isn’t complete, but these two specific fics ARE, hence why they’re in the Complete section.

Lighting The Beacon [M3zzaTh3M3z]: This is one of the first bnha fics I’ve ever read, and I’m so glad this was my introduction to the fandom!! It’s a pretty fluffy oneshot, starting off with Kiri asking Baku out and Baku rejecting him because “who ever heard of a gay hero?” Aizawa hears about that (the basics, no details like names or anything), and things…start to change. Mic says he’s married to a man (its Aizawa), All Might comes out as pan, ace Midnight…and at the end, Bakugou asks Kirishima out very publicly. It’s so near and dear to my heart, and it honestly deserves more attention than it gets.

You’re only relevant until you’re older (they’re gonna talk about you over and over) [futurehearts]: Pro-Heroes Red Riot and Ground Zero are happily married and Baku has a reputation to slowly destroy :D (he’s soft, mainly for his husband, and he knows it…and now so does the rest of the world lmaooo).

Love Notes [PurplePersnickety]: Kirishima gets really, REALLY sappy love notes on his desk for a week or two and works to figure out who it is (spoiler alert, it’s Bakugou being a Soft Bitch). When Kiri asks him about it, he confesses everything and they date in secret for six months before telling the whole class (oneshot).

Sonder [Maplefudge]: I bet this bitch thought she wouldn’t get a shout-out well guess what you write good and there’s nothing you can do about it This is the first work of maple’s I ever read, and it’s perf <3 I’m love. It’s a look at the “totally platonic” (how much sarcasm can I add to two words?) Kiribaku from members of the class, over the course of 13 chapters. It’s full of fluff, useless mutual pining, obliviousness, and “platonic bro kisses”. Read it if you need to scream at some useless gays.

Anger Management [Julietwasanidiot]: The entire fandom is gearing up for S4 by writing hurt/comfort KiriBaku post-raid fics, and I am HERE for it. Because of when it’s set though, there’s going to be spoilers so if you’re anime-only you migt want to steer clear of this one. It’s got an ICONIC rice-and-anger line, though.

Stupid Mistakes [lemxnfox]: Kirishima and Bakugou got in a fight! They fight a lot, but this fight they’ve been fighting for six months and the class is #OverIt. They concoct a plan to lock the two of them in a room and force them to make up– and they DO. Side ShinKami and TodoDeku.

No More Fragments [Ischemia]: Canon-compliant…to a degree. Shinsou takes his place as the Superior Purple in Class A, gets himself a boyfriend (Kaminari) and a squad (the Bakusquad)…and loses it. Or does he???? Canon-typical violence, side Kiribaku, mystery plot.

Caught In My Own Web [anxioussaliorsoldier]: SHINSOU IS IN 1-A!!!!! And he fucks up when trying to use his capture weapon lmao. Kaminari finds him and they recreate the iconic Spider-Man kiss…and then Shinsou passes out from the blood rushing to his head. It’s cute guys.

Be Selfish For Me [A_Reflective_Projection]: WARNING– the entire thing is Aizawa asking 1-A to be careful as pro heroes, by taking them to a hero graveyard. It’s painful. It’s sad (especially when Aizawa brings up a classmate of his who died in their first year as a pro). It ends bittersweet, and there’s some good Dadzawa content in there. The most present ship is Erasermic, and that only really makes an appearance in the last chapter.

Closer [MikeWritesThings]: Fluffy Erasermic, canon universe, where Aizawa starts calling in to Mic’s radio show cuz he misses him. It’s sweet af ❤️❤️

Meaningless Holiday [dysonQueer]: It’s a sweet Valentine’s Day fic, canon-compliant, with established Erasermic for the soul. I highly recommend it if you’re having a rough day and you need some feel-good fluff

Come Back Toe Me [Milligramme]: Aged-up, Pro Hero fic where Kiri has a shit day heroing, but he isn’t physically hurt. Not until he breaks his toe on the coffee table, that is. He can’t stop laughing, and Bakugou can’t stop worrying about his dumbass boyfriend.

Kiss Me Through The Screen [Ischemia]: Aged-up fic with ShinKami as the main focus and some side KiriBaku, but…uh, most of the Bakusquad aren’t full-time Heroes. Kami dropped out of UA completely, and Shinsou never went in the first place. So, Kaminari is working at Jirou’s cafe and works as a SFW camboy at night, while Shinsou is a teacher and watches the stream nightly. Later there’s a plot around a stalker, again please keep yourself safe Pineapple Anon!!

If I Don’t Act… [SilentNorth]: This is gritty and painful, but don’t worry! There’s a happy ending :D (I rarely read/write/recc pure angst, you’re safe here my child). Kiri is a college dropout working two jobs, living with Mina as his roommate, and with a hero complex the size of Texas. Enter art student Bakugou, who can save himself thank you very much. Kiribaku but the Kiribaku hasn’t really happened yet, cuz Bakugou is a literal child who got kidnapped and is probably gonna get sold. I think we’re three chapters in and he just got to earth and met Kirishima, as well as a few holy people (Midoriya, Ochako, Iida, and I believe Tetsu). Now he gotta find his daughter and keep her safe. Kiribaku with some fairly graphic descriptions of torture and cannibalism in the second chapter, don’t read it if that’s gonna trigger you!! Also he pretty brutally rips apart the girl’s abusive parents.

Surviving for Second Chances [SilentNorth]: TWEWY Kiribaku AU!!! There’s some differences between the original game and the fic, for pretty obvious reasons (medium, objective, and character differences being a few), but this got me to FINALLY watch a playthrough of the game cuz I’m too broke to go and buy it myself!! Kirishima as Neku and Bakugou as Joshua, plus Mina as Shiki and TodoDeku as Rhyme and Beat. Canon-typical violence, and we just finished up Week 1!!

Nino yawned, the lingering effects of staying up all night working on his campaign. Plus a few breaks to get his homework done. He’d been hit by a sudden wave of inspiration and knew where he wanted to go with this campaign. Now that he had the plot mapped out, all he needed to do was keep them meeting consistently. There was room for missed days, but not a lot of it. If everything went according to plan then they would be done just before December.

One step into the classroom and he saw that he wasn’t the first of his friend group to arrive. Adrien and Marinette had beaten him there. To his immense surprise, the two of them were holding a conversation. By themselves. With neither him or Alya to supervise. Naturally, he went back around the corner to watch from afar. He’d done it without thinking and shook his head after he realized it - Alya was getting to him.

“That was a really cool plan you came up with, Marinette!”

“R-really? Oh! Th-thanks, I made it myself!”

Nino winced, but Adrien just laughed. “And you’re hilarious?! I wish we had done this way sooner.”

“Y-yeah! And you, um, you’re pretty too- I mean, pretty cool! You’re just so excited about everything. It’s… it’s really inspiring. Even when you don’t succeed.”

“Oh?” Adrien practically purred. “Did you wish I got better results with my first roll?”

“Wuh- I, um, that’s- well…”

“Don’t worry, I’m just kidding.” Adrien chuckled and Marinette joined him after a sigh of relief.

Nino took that as his opportunity to enter the room nonchalantly. “Hey, dudes. Were you talking about the session? We still on for this Saturday?”

Adrien shared a fistbump with him. “You know it! Hey, did you get today’s science homework done?”

Remembering the rushed work he did last night, he pulled out his scrawled notes. “Uh… sorta. Mind lending some help before class starts, bro?”

“Hey hey, little dudes!” Nino smiled as Etta and Ella ran towards him. “How’s it hangin’?”

After getting caught up with them, he set his backpack full of rulebooks on the living room table and walked into the kitchen. He leaned against the counter as he watched his girlfriend put the finishing touches on dinner.

“Right on time, babe. Tonight’s meal comes straight from my mom’s cookbook. You’d better get ready for a treat to remember.” Alya gave him a peck on the cheek as she passed him on the way to the dishes.

“Your mom’s recipe? And you cooking? That’s gotta be good, no doubt about it.”

“Sweet talk like that will get you everywhere, cappy.”

Nino stepped over to the pot of soup and took a deep breath. It was every bit as delicious smelling as he had hoped. Maybe it wasn’t the ideal food for a D&D session, but he wasn’t about to complain.

“So how long do we have the place to ourselves?” The twins started shouting from their room. “Well, uh, not exactly to ourselves, but, um… you know.”

Alya leaned against the counter and shrugged. “Who knows? Mom and Dad tend to get carried away on their dates, so we’ll at least have a few hours. Maybe they won’t show up until way late. Nora’s out of town, though, so at least there is that.”

“Right on. The less interruptions we have, the better.” He grinned. “And the less people I’ve got to share dinner with.”

“Any clue when the other two are supposed to arrive?”

“Dunno. My boy Adrien said he’d take a bit longer than he’d thought. What about Marinette?” Alya smiled and Nino pinched the bridge of his nose. “Babe… you didn’t.”

There was a knock at the door, which prompted Alya to flash another smirk at Nino before letting them in. Just as he’d suspected, Adrien entered and was followed by Marinette, her cheeks tinged pink by the time they’d spent alone together.

It didn’t take long for them to get settled in - at least, not after they found something to distract the twins with. A few minutes of set up and Nino was right back to where they had been last week.

“The caves are open for exploring. You can bet there are tons more enemies where those first few came from, but you guys haven’t even drawn a weapon yet or taken any hits. What do you do?”

“...What do you mean?” Adrien scrunched his eyebrows together. “We still need to clear out the rest of them. Do we have options besides leaving or fighting?”

“Well, um, I think what he means is we could, ah, scout?” Marinette replied. “My character should be stealthy enough to find out where there are more kobolds. Without running into more traps.”

“Ohhh!” Adrien’s eyes went wide. “Yeah, that might be a smart idea. I’ll give you my signal horn in case you run into trouble.”

“Th-thanks! I hope I won’t need it.”

A brief exploration later lead to other one sided battles as the party ambushed the kobolds in their own den.

“You’ve scoured this level of the cave, but can’t find any more raiders. What you did find was a tunnel leading deeper into the cave system. From what Marinette can tell, it looks like an old mine.”

Alya narrowed her eyes. “No way that was all the kobolds. We’ve only killed like twelve of them, which is still a ways off from the twenty that the villagers were so sure about. Something doesn’t add up, and I bet we’ll find our answers down there.”

“Well, maybe they are just down in the mine? Would that be so strange?” Adrien tapped a finger to his chin. “Or… they could be out on a raid.”

“No way, sunshine. The raids were barely big enough to kill cattle. Half their numbers just for a raid isn’t in their MO. Besides, you heard how Cappy described the entrance to the mine - ‘silent like a tomb.’”

“Actually,” Nino helpfully cut in, “now that you’re closer, you can hear something moving down there. Sounds a little bigger than a kobold though. Not by much, but still.”

The adventurers shared a look.

“I’m not about to leave a job half-finished,” Marinette said as she crossed her arms on the table. “And we’re still in pretty good shape.”

“Where you go, my song shall follow.”

“...Well, I guess someone has to keep you two safe,” Alya said.

“The tunnels wind deeper beneath the ground until you discover a grisly sight - the remaining kobolds, torn to shreds. Bones, nicked by the kobolds’ spears, lay scattered around them.”

Silence reigned over the party.

“Bones?” Marinette spoke first. “Are they carved with patterns or…?”

Nino shook his head. “Nope. It looks like random jabs and cuts from the spears. At least, as far as your untrained eye can tell.”

“Well… now I’m even more worried.” Marinette narrowed her eyes at her character sheet. “Something had to have killed these kobolds.”

“Yeah, girl. We don’t want to leave now, only for the village to get messed with by whatever did this.” Alya idly rolled her eight sided dice.

“So you’ll be pressing on then?” Nino looked between them, getting nods in return. “Sweet. You walk toward the other end of the room… and the bones reassemble into a band of dwarf sized skeletons. Roll for initiative.”

The battle ended up being longer than Nino had originally intended. None of the party members were equipped to deal with a skeletal enemy, excluding his cleric. They may have won the fight, but they were worse off for it. Maybe he should tone down the number of skeletons in the next few rooms.

Before he could make a decision, though, the twins burst from their room. Despite Alya’s best efforts, once released, they couldn’t be contained again. The session had been officially derailed and ended.

The Weekend Warrior March 6, 2020 – ONWARD, THE WAY BACK, EMMA and MUCH More!

Thankfully, February ended pretty well as The Invisible Man fell just shy of my abridged $30 million opening prediction, but still, $29 million is pretty damn good, and the movie���s “B+” CinemaScore makes me think that it will do pretty well going into March even with another Blumhouse genre film opening next week. Oh, yeah, and A Quiet Place Part 2. Anyway, next week is next week. Let’s get to this week…

March kicks off with ONWARD, the latest animated movie from Disney’s Pixar Animation division, which his coming off its 10th Oscar in the Animated Feature category last month, as it launches its 23rd movie over the course of 25 years. It’s pretty amazing how far Pixar has come since it was launched with John Lasseter’s Toy Story way back in 1995, the company having amassed $6 billion in North America alone and $14.4 billion worldwide.

Onward is the new movie from Monsters University director Dan Scanlon, a fantasy involving two elf brothers, voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, who go on a quest to find magic that will help them bring back their dead father. The movie also features the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Tracey Ullman, Lena Waithe, Octavia Spencer, Ali Wong and Mel Rodriguez.

This is Pixar’s first original movie since Coco in 2017, but it’s also the first movie released by the studio outside of the profitable summer and holiday box office seasons. It’s certainly a departure, but this will also be the third time where there are two Pixar movies in the same year. The last time this happened was in 2015 when the summer release Inside Out was another $350 million hit but it led to the November release of The Good Dinosaur, which to date is still Pixar’s lowest grosser even compared to 1998’s A Bug’s Life.  Good Dinosaur opened with just $39 million over the normally-lucrative Thanksgiving weekend and only grossed $123 million domestic. The March release might make some wonder if Onward isn’t one of Pixar’s stronger offerings. (Pete Docter’s Soulis getting the studio’s higher profile summer release, but that’s what comes when you turn original movies like Up and Inside Out into blockbuster hits without the benefits of being a sequel.)

Having big stars like Pratt and Holland providing the main voices might normally help, especially in terms of getting publicity for the movie, although Holland just provided his voice for Fox’s animated Spies in Disguise with an equally big star like Will Smith and that only grossed $66 million after opening last Christmas.

A last-minute boost for Onward might come from the fact that it’s preceded by a brand new “The Simpsons” short, another benefit from the massive purchase of Fox and its properties by Disney last year. That and the Pixar brand should drive business opening weekend, which should be good for roughly $50 million even with stronger family films like Call of the Wild and Sonic the Hedgehog, which will step aside to give Onward the required berth. I’m not sure Onwardwill achieve the $200 million benchmark of other non-Pixar sequels but it should be good for around $160 to 170 million with a bump from schools having spring break in March. (I’m not going to start presuming that the current corona scare might impact moviegoing, at least not just yet, although it’s something that needs to be kept in mind.)

Having not seen Onward yet, I don’t have that much more to say, but I have good news, and it’s that I’ve been invited to see Disney’s Mulan, so a.) I’ll have a review for you, and b.) I’ll hopefully have more insightful thoughts on that movie’s box office since I’ll have seen it.

The other wide release this weekend is the second team-up between Ben Affleck and director Gavin O’Connor, following their 2016 hit The Accountant. Unlike that thriller, THE WAY BACK (Warner Bros.) is more of an inspirational drama about a man trying to overcome addiction to find redemption.  Affleck plays Jack Cunningham, a former high school basketball star struck down by alcoholism, who is given another chance to coach his old high school basketball team. The drama comes from whether he can overcome his demons to find redemption. It wouldn’t be a particularly inspirational movie if he doesn’t.

Oddly,The Way Back is a far more common type of March release than Onward but it is also Affleck’s second attempt at a comeback, having recovered from the bombs of the mid-00s to find favor as a director with the Oscar Best Picture winner Argo, which followed a decent-sized hit with 2010’s The Town. Unfortunately, Affleck’s 2016 movie Live By Night bombed really badly, countering the success he had as Batman in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Supermanand in 2016’s The Accountant, which grossed $86.3 million. The fact that Justice League made $100 million less than Batman v Superman got Affleck replaced by Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, due out next year, so Affleck definitely has something to prove with this movie.

Besides reuniting Affleck and O’Connor, The Way Back also has a chance to draw in older males by being set in the world of basketball, as we’ve seen movies like Coach Carter, starring Samuel L. Jackson, open big with $24.8 million over the MLK Jr. weekend in 2005. On the other hand, Disney opened the basketball drama Glory Road, starring Josh Lucas, on the same weekend and that opened with half that amount. O’Connor is no stranger to inspirational feel-good sports movies having directed Disney’s Miracle about the 1980 US hockey team, which ended up grossing $64 million after a $19 million opening in 2004. Obviously, these are all movies that are nearly 15 years old, and it’s harder to find more recent sports hits unless you look to the world of faith-based dramas, and maybe Warner Bros. hopes that crowd will be out for this story of redemption.

I wish I had more confidence in this film, although I generally have never been a very big Affleck fan, and I’m not sure if this is the kind of movie that will entice older males in the same way as The Accountant (which I didn’t like, mind you). I’d like to think that the movie can do somewhere in the range of Thunder Road’s $13 million opening, but I have a feeling that this will end up closer to $10 to 11 million this weekend and will have to rely on word-of-mouth if it wants to maintain business through a month with a lot of strong offerings to come.

Mini-Review: On paper, The Way Back would seem like a very obvious movie, both for Ben Affleck and also for director Gavin O’Connor, who has dealt with inspirational sports movies and those seeking redemption. (Warrior is still one of my favorite films he’s made to date.)

We meet Affleck’s Jack Cunningham as he’s still on a low after splitting from his wife (Janina Gavankar) with a beer can always in hand, although we won’t find out what happened until much later. Out of the blue, Jack is called by the pastor of Bishop Hayes Catholic high school where Jack was the big star destined for greatness decades earlier. Even though he hasn’t touched a ball since then, Jack takes on the challenge of trying to turn things around for the worst team in the league. At the same time, he tries to help a few individual players and not get on the bad side of the chaplin with his constant swearing.

This is a great vehicle for Affleck and O’Connor, working from a script by Brad Ingelsby, whose screenplay for last year’s American Woman was another nice surprise. Affleck really has never been better in a role that allows him to pull from his own addiction and marital issues to create a fully-rounded character. The way O’Connor shoots the basketball games and the progress of the team keeps things exciting.

The only significant problem with the movie is that the first 2/3rds of it seems like two separate movies, one involving Jack trying to bring Bishop Hayes back from being the worst team in the league and the other being Jack’s alcohol problems. The two sides of the movie rarely intersect for a good chunk of the movie.

The real surprises come in the film’s last act where we think everything is going great and can’t imagine things could get bad again for Jack… and of course, they do. I won’t say about how and what happens, but when you’ve spent the whole movie watching him do something so inspiring, it’s a little deflating to be brought back down to reality.

Sure, The Way Back may be predictable (to a point) but it’s a damn good version of the movie that you’re expecting, offering a big-time tug on the heart strings. Rating: 8/10

Hitting theaters nationwide this weekend – roughly 1,500 theaters -- is the new Jane Austen adaptation EMMA. (Focus Features), starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Bill Nighy. The movie has done pretty well platforming, but it will be a tougher sell as it expands into regions outside major cities, so the per-theater average will fall quite a lot since last weekend. I think it should be good for $2 to 3 million which will allow it to place in the top 10 but we’ll have to see how it fares before expecting much more of an expansion.

Also, Sony Pictures Classics is planning to expand Michael Winterbottom’s Greed, starring Steve Coogan, into a nationwide release, but who knows if that’s 400 theaters, 500 theaters or more? (UPDATE: Theater count is confirmed at 596 so I’m sticking with my earlier prediction of $1.2 million.) I’m not sure they should go very wide with a $7,124 per-theater average this past weekend (worse than Searchlight’s Wendy), so I don’t think it will make enough to crack the top 10 this weekend even with a fairly low entry point.

LOCAL FESTIVALS

The big festival kicking off in New York this week is the annual “Rendezvous with French Cinema” up at Film at Lincoln Center, which runs from this Thursday through March 15. It kicks off on Thursday with Hirokazu Kore-eda’s first French language film The Truth as the opener with stars Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke introducing the film at 6:30pm after doing a separate conversation earlier (only standby available for the conversation and early screening but tickets available for the 9:15pm screening sans introduction). I’ll probably write more about this next week when it gets its limited release, but the two actors play a couple who come to France to spend time with her actress mother Fabienne (played by the amazing Catherine Deneuve) who is publishing her contentious memoirs. The other movie I’ve seen which I liked a little more is Quentin Dupieux’s quirky Deerskin, starring Jean Dujardin (The Artist), which also opens theatrically this month. I wasn’t able to catch Alice Winocour’s Proxima, starring Eva Green and Matt Dillon, but hopefully that will be one of the films that finds distribution, as many of the “Rendezvous” offerings, this festival might be the only time to see them.  Other returning filmmakers include Cédric Klapisch, Bruno Dumont, as well as Christophe Honoré’s On a Magical Night with Cannes winner Chiara Mastoianni in attendance, plus more. LIMITED RELEASES

This is a pretty decent for limited release, so if you’re in New York or L.A. and have already seen some of the expanding movies or aren’t interested in the new wide releases, you have a LOT of other options… and that’s even before we get to the repertory stuff below. There are just way too many limited releases coming out the next couple weekends.

I’m gonna do something a little different this week. Instead of picking just one “Featured Movie,” I’m gonna go with a “Featured Theater” since two decent movies are opening at New York’s Film Forum this coming week. (Plus it begins a new Hitchcock series, which you can read about in the repertory section below.)

We’ll begin with SORRY WE MISSED YOU (Zeitgeist/Kino Lorber) – opening at Film Forum Weds. and in L.A. at the Landmark Nuart on Friday. It’s the new film from director Ken Loach, who has an amazing filmography of British “kitchen sink” dramas but also great historical films like The Wind That Shakes the Barley. Loach’s last film I, Daniel Blake was in my top 5 a few years back and Sorry I Missed You is very much a follow-up, once again dealing with Brits struggling with the system to make a living. In this case, it’s Kris Hitchen’s Ricky Turner and his wife Abbie (Debbie Honeywood) as he signs on for a “zero-hour” job delivering packages, a system that requires working longer hours. Meanwhile, Abbie is working just as hard as a home care worker. As they struggle to make a living, their teenage son is skipping school and getting into trouble.

Although as a freelance writer, I could definitely relate to the idea of having to work extra-hard in order to earn enough money to survive, especially in the jobs I was doing getting paid by piece which was never helpful in making ends meet. Seeing how the package delivery industry in northern England is used to take advantage of individuals is partially what keeps things interesting.  Like The Way Back, you sort of expect things to get bad for Ricky, especially in regards to his son, but there’s a certain point where you think he’s gonna crash his van cause he’s so exhausted. It doesn’t happen but what happens next is almost worse than that. Either way, it’s another decent movie from Loach (and regular writer Paul Laverty), maybe not as good as I, Daniel Blake but still worthwhile.

From China comes THE WILD GOOSE LAKE (Film Movement), the new film from Daio Yinan (Black Coal, Thin Ice), which is quite a different film for Mr. Yinan, starring Hu Ge as mob leader Zhou Zenong, who gets into a feud with another local gang leader, ends up killing a police officer in the ensuing mayhem and ends up hiding out in the area of Wuhan known as Wild Goose Lake, becoming entangled with Gwei Lun-Mei’s Liu. This is another interesting take on the crime noir genre from Zenong, one that maybe gets a little more artsy-fartsy than Black Coal but one that also veers further into genre territory, particularly with some of the violence and bloodshed involved. It offers further proof that Yinan is a true master of cinematic storytelling since it’s so unlike the many other Chinese crime films that have come from both Hong Kong and the mainland. This one is quite the film, although I still recommend seeking out Black Coal if you ever have the chance. This one will open at the Film Forum on Friday. (While you’re going to the Film Forum, check out Corneliu Porumbiou’s crime-thriller The Whistlers, which I watched over the weekend, and it’s quite different from many other Romanian films I’ve seen, not only because it’s under 2 hours.)

Next up is THE BURNT ORANGE HERESY (Sony Pictures Classics), Giuseppe Capotondi’s adaptation of Charles Willeford’s book, starring Claes Bang from The Square and The Girl in the Spider’s Web as art critic James Figueras, who is giving lectures in Italy when he meets Elizabeth Debicki’s Berenice. It’s a meeting that turns into a fast relationship that has them both in bed, and when James is called to the mansion of a rich Italian art lover named Cassidy (played by Mick Jagger), he brings Berenice along with him. Once there, James learns that Cassidy has become the benefactor for reclusive artist Jerome Debney, played by Donald Sutherland, whose entire body of work was destroyed in a fire. Cassidy has gotten James an exclusive interview with Debney with the condition that he gets one of Debney’s in-demand paintings out of the deal. I’m not really a fine art fanatic nor have I read Willeford’s book, but I found this to be an interesting dramatic thriller in the vein of The Talented Mr. Ripley as you watch this cat-and-mouse game being played between the characters. Sutherland is pretty awesome as Debney, who flirts with Berenice while playing mind games with James, and the way these dynamics play out is what makes this film better than other art-driven films. As you watch this movie, you’ll probably realize that Claes Bang really should be playing a James Bond villain and then Mick Jagger appears on screen with him and you REALLY think that Jagger should have played a Bond villain anytime in the last few decades as he’s great at playing devious. This is another great release from Sony Classics in a year where they seem to be turning things around from the last couple years. So far, besides this, I’ve also liked Greed, The Traitor and The Climb, which will be released later this month.

Having been delayed from its intended December release due to many controversies, George (The Adjustment Bureau) Nolfi’s THE BANKER (Apple+) will finally hit select theaters for a few weeks before launching on Apple+ on March 20. It stars Anthony Mackie as Bernard Garrett, a young genius growing up black pre-Civil Rights and dealing with the Jim Crow racism in his hometown of Texas, so he moves to Los Angeles and becomes heavily involved in the real estate business. Eventually, he finds a partner in Samuel L. Jackson’s Joe Morris, a club owner with money and a good amount of real estate experience himself. Slowly, they begin buying up buildings in downtown L.A. using the ambitious white Max Steiner (Nicholas Hoult) as their frontman, while letting affluent black people in to build a community and Bernard decides it’s time to buy the bank in his old Texas hometown. That’s where things start going wrong, but I won’t get too deep into the story. This is a decent film from Nolfi with particularly strong performances from Mackie and Jackson, as well as Nia Long as Garrett’s wife. It’s very reminiscent of Spike Lee’s BlackKklansman with a similar level of humor despite being about a serious subject. It does hit a bit of a lull when the story moves back to Texas and the trio’s dealings with the banks, and it gets a little bogged down in all the numbers, but it does end up delivering a decent true-life story that will be of interest.

Kelly Reichardt’s latest period piece is FIRST COW (A24), set in the Pacific Northwest during the time of the Gold Rush as a cook (John Magaro) encounters a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) in the Oregon Territory and the two of them hatch a money-making scheme to sell biscuits using stolen milk from a local landowner’s prized cow. Although I have not really been a fan of Reichardt’s work, even her historic film Meek’s Cutoff, I think with this movie she really finds her footing with two great actors/characters and a story that’s fairly intriguing in its own right. I wasn’t too crazy with how the film ended (foreshadowed by the film’s opening framing device) but it’s one of Reichardt’s few films where I didn’t get bored or lose interest, so that’s certainly sayin’ something. What’s even more impressive is that two local theaters (BAM, MOMI) held repertory series in conjunction with the release of First Cow and apparently, other cities are doing the same.

From Brazil comes BACURAU (Kino Lorber), Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles’s odd genre film that’s based around a small village in the Brazilian equivalent of the Outback, a remote place whose matriarch Carmelita has just passed away at the age of 94. There are forces at work trying to drive the villagers out of their homes, including putting a dam to cut off their water supply, but things get stranger when a nearby farmer and his family end up dead, which leads to a twist that takes the film directly into genre territory. I don’t want to say too much about what happens but it involves Udo Kier and a lot of weapons… Bacurau opens at the IFC Center downtown and Film at Lincoln Center uptown (with QnAs at the latter, which is also holding a “Mapping Bacurau” series starting March 13.)

Carlo Mirabella-Davis’ SWALLOW (IFC Films) stars Haley Bennett as a newly-pregnant housewife married to her perfect husband Richie (Austin Stowell, who recently appeared in Fantasy Island), but as she tries to please him and his parents, she starts developing a dangerous habit in the form of a disorder called pica that has her compulsively swallowing inedible objects. Okay, then. It will open at the IFC Center, the Laemmle Monica Film Center and as well as On Demand and digital. Bennett won an award for her acting at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, but I somehow missed it.

Next, we have a trio of films opening at New York’s Village East Cinema and a few other theaters both in New York and select cities:

I really wanted to like Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman’s Irish horror-comedy EXTRA ORDINARY (GDE) more, since the trailer really made it seem like something I might enjoy. In the movie, Maeve Higgins plays Rose, a smalltown driving instructor who has supernatural talents who is called upon by Barry Ward’s Martin Martin, whose daughter is being used by a former rock star (played by Will Forge) who needs a virgin to commit a Satanic pact to regain his fame. The movie just seemed rather silly and not nearly as funny as the trailer makes it seem, but maybe it would be better seing it with an audience.

Another movie that looks good (and I hope to watch soon) is Ricky Tollman’s directorial debut, the political thriller Run This Town (Oscilloscope), which stars Ben Platt (from Pitch Perfect), Mena Massoud, Nina Dobrev, Scott Speedman,  Jennifer Ehle and Damian Lewis, quite an impressive cast. Platt plays Bram, a young journalist who becomes entangled in a political scandal with his political aide friend Kamal (Massoud) after catching the latter’s city hall boss doing something bad that can help the former’s career.

Also opening this weekend at the Village East and other cities, Anna Akana stars in Emily Ting’s semi-autobiographical Go Back to China (Gravitas Ventures) playing a spoiled rich girl named Sasha Li, who is forced by her father to return to China after blowing through her trust fund. Once there, Sasha finds herself by reconnecting with her estranged family and getting into toy designing. I haven’t watched this yet but the trailer looks cute, and I might have to make an effort to watch this.

Sadly, I had to refrain mentioning Daniel Radcliffe’s previous movie released last week, but he stars in another one this weekend, Francis Annan’s Escape from Pretoria (Momentum) based on Tim Jenkins’ autobiography “Inside Out: Escape from Pretoria Prison,” a thriller about the attempt by two political captives to break out of prison during apartheid South Africa. It also stars Daniel Webber, Ian Hart, Mark Leonard Winter and Nathan Page.

A few other films I haven’t had a chance to watch include William Nicholson’s Hope Gap (Roadside Attractions), starring Annette Bening and Bill Nighy with Bening playing Grace, a woman who learns her husband (Nighy) is leaving her after 29 years and how that break-up affects their grown son (Josh O’Connor).

Freida Pinto and Leslie Odom Jr. star in Takashi Doscher’s Only(Vertical Entertainment) in which a comet releases a deadly virus that attacks all the women in the world forcing the two of them into hiding in their apartment from the savages hunting the surviving women. That’s a pretty strange premise that sounds like the opposite of the comic book series “Y the Last Man.” If only there was enough time to watch half the movies opening this weekend.

I accidentally included D.W. Young’s doc The Booksellers (Greenwich) in last week’s column, but it actually opens at the Quad in New York and other cities this Friday. It takes a look behind the scenes at the world of rare books with appearances by Parker Posey, Fran Lebowitz and Gay Talese.

From Bollywood comes BAAGHI 3 (FIP), Ahmed Khan’s martial arts action movie, starring series regular Tiger Shroff (who is filming a Bollywood remake of Rambo!) and Ritesih Deshmukh as brothers Ronnie and Vikram, the latter being kidnapped and beaten while abroad for work and Ronnie seeking revenge. Shraddha Kapoor returns after starring in the first movie of this action series.

Other movies, mostly hitting On Demand (with limited theatrical) include Transference (Epic Pictures), which opens in L.A. on Friday and hits On Demand next Tuesday, Final Kill (Cinedigm), Beneath Us (Vital Pictures) and Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss (MarVista Entertainment).

STREAMING AND CABLE

Some big stuff hitting the streaming…um… streams this weekend, including director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg’s latest collaboration, the action-thriller SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL on Netflix. I have really enjoyed this duo’s collaborations in the past, including Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon and Lone Survivor. (Mile 22 was a bit of a disappointment, considering how great those other three were.) This one has Wahlberg playing the title character Spenser, an ex-cop who teams with his roommate Hawk (Winston Duke from Usand Black Panther) to take down criminals responsible for killing two Boston police officers.

Equally exciting is the launch of Alex Garland’s new sci-fi series Devs, which will launch on FX on Hulu on Thursday. This is a really terrific premise from the director of Ex Machina and Annihilation with a fantastic cast that includes an amazing cast that includes Nick Offerman, Alison Pill, Jin Ha, Cailea Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson and more.

Also launching this week on Hulu is Nanette Burstein’s documentary Hillary (Hulu), which followed former Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton over the course of her 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. The movie just premiered at Sundance in January to raves.

Steven Spielberg’s revival of his popular ‘80s anthology series Amazing Stories will debut on Apple TV+ this Friday with the first episode, “The Cellar.”

REPERTORY

Before we get to the regular repertory stuff, I want to mention that Satoshi Kon’s classic 2003 anime Tokyo Godfathers will get a nationwide theatrical release via Fathom Events with Monday night, March 9, being the original subtitled version while Weds. the 11th, there will be a dubbed version.

METROGRAPH (NYC):

The big debut this week is the Metrograph Pictures release of the restored version of Fruit Chan’s 1997 classic Made in Hong Kong, which has never been released in the United States! Apparently it was also the first movie released in Hong Kong after it received independence in 1997. It’s an interesting crime tale that deals with the relationship between three young people, hoodlum August Moon, who collects debts for a local loan shark, his dim-witted friend Sylvester and Ping, an attractive but troubled young girl who begins a relationship with August. It also deals with the death of a young girl who seemingly jumped off a roof and the three of them trying to solve the case and get a few letters she left behind to those they were meant for.  If you can imagine a cross between River’s Edge, Me and Earl and the Dying Girland the recent Peanut Butter Falcon, all set in the gritty street crime culture of 1997 Hong Kong, then you can only begin to imagine what you’re in for, but it’s an amazing film and nothing you would ever see made or released in the U.S., so good on Metrograph for picking up the distribution rights and getting it out to the world.

On Sunday, Metrograph regular Alex Ross Perry will be showing Peter Hyams’ 1974 film Busting, but on Saturday, actor Chiara Mastroianni, who will be in town for “Rendezvous with French Cinema” (see above)  will show her “Dream Double Feature” of Dino Risi’s 1962 film Il Sorpasso and Charles Laughton’s psychological horror classic The Night of the Hunter (1955).

This weekend’s Late Nites at Metrograph is Fassbinder’s 1972 film The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant and apparently, the “Playtime: Family Matinees” has been replaced with “Metrograph Matinees” on Saturday and Sunday, which includes some less kid-friendly fare. For instance, this weekend, they’re showing Jean-Luc Godard’s Weekend (1967), which I’m assuming isn’t for the kiddies.

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE BROOKLYN (NYC)

Tonight’s “Weird Wednesday” is Robocop 2, while next week’s “Terror Tuesday” is the 1989 giallo Paganinni Horror, starring Donald Pleasance, and “Weird Wednesday” is the 1985 action film Sword of Heaven.

Over on the West Coast, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Downtown Los Angeles will screen 1968’s Wild in the Streetsas it’s “Weird Wednesday.” Saturday’s “Kids Camp” is The Shaun the Sheep Movie and then Sunday is a Brunch screening of The Brady Brunch. Marc Bernarndin’s Monday “The Minority Report” screening is Joss Whedon’s 2005 film Serenity. Next week’s “Terror Tuesday” is Kathryn Bigelo’s Near Dark and then the “Weird Wednesday” is Bobcat Goldthwait’s 2011 dark comedy God Bless America

THE NEW BEVERLY (L.A.):

Weds’ afternoon matinee is Clint Eastwood’s High Plains Drifter (1973), while the Weds/Thursday night double feature is The Man Who Would Be King (1975) with Zulu Dawn  (1979). The “Freaky Fridays” matinee is Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Trooper (1997) and then we’re into the weekend with Friday/Saturday double features of Blake Edwards’ The Return of the Pink Panthe r(1975) and The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1975), both starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau. The weekend’s “Kiddee Matinee” is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Princeand the Saturday midnight screening is Hal Ashby’s fantastic Harold and Maude. Sunday and Monday will continue the Blake Edwards love with 1965’s The Great Race with one of the greatest all-star casts of the decade. On Monday afternoon you can see the classic House Partyfrom 1990 and then Tuesday’s Grindhouse is David Cronenberg’s The Brood (1979) with Scalpel (1977).

FILM FORUM (NYC):

The big rep series beginning this week on Wednesday and running through March 19 is “The Women Behind Hitchcock,” mostly focusing on Hitchcock’s relationship with wife and editor Alma Reville and secretary Joan Harrison. The series includes Hitchcock classics like Rebecca  (1940) and The Lady Vanishes (1938), as well as Robert Siodmak’s 1944 film Phantom Lady (produced by Harrison) as well lots more. This weekend’s “Film Forum Jr.” is Jim Henson’s Muppet Treasure Island (1996) and Friday is a screening of Claude Lelouch’s Oscar-winning 1966 film A Man and a Woman with Lelouch in person. (That’s already sold out online but will have a standby line.)

EGYPTIAN THEATRE (LA):

Thursday offers an encore screening of the Russian film Come and Seeand then Friday begins “Noir City Hollywood: the 22ndAnnual Los Angeles Festival of Film Noir” with a double feature of The Beast Must Die (1952) with Gilda (1946) and then Saturday offers a TRIPLE FEATURE of Fritz Lang’s 1931 M, Joseph Losey’s 1951 remake M and El Vampiro Negro, the 1953 Spanish Language. That’s a LOT of “M”s. Saturday night in the Spielberg Theater, “Joe Dante’s 16mm Spotlight” will screen Brian De Palma’s 1968 film Murder À La Mod. Sunday offers two Film Noir double features, two from Robert Siodmak: The Devil Strikes at Night (1957) and Fly-by-Night (1942) and then the Korean noir The Housemaid (1960) with My Name is Julia Ross (1945). Meanwhile, the AERO will mainly be doing the West Coast version of “Canada Now 2020,” and then on Monday, David Mamet will be on hand to show his film House of Gamesas part of “Noir City: Hollywood.”

QUAD CINEMA (NYC):

Horace B. Jenkins’ 1982 film Cane River continues through the weekend, as does Pandora and the Flying Dutchman and Brazilian filmmaker Bruno Barreto’s Donna Flor and Her Two Husbands (1976) plays Saturday night and then again a couple times next week.

MOMA  (NYC):

Lots of new series this week including Modern Matinees: CicelyTyson, which will focus on the Tony, Emmy, honorary Oscar and Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree and her body of work with matinee screenings on Weds through Thursdays. It kicks off Weds with 1954’s Carib Gold, followed on Thursday by Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) and Friday’s screening of Rob Cohen’s 2012 movie Alex Cross. The latter might seem like a strange movie to screen at MOMA, but this week also begins In Character: Daniel Craig, which will cover the roughly two decade career of the British actor best known for playing James Bond. The latter begins on Tuesday night with a screening of his Bond debut, 2006’s Casino Royale, but then it will take a week off and be back next Weds for a repeat. SThe latter is delayed for a retrospective on Israeli journalist Efratia Gitai and her filmmaking son Amos Gitai’s work called “In Times Like These.”The weekend series includes 2009’s Carmel, 1986’s Esther, 1989’s Berlin-Jerusalem and 2002’s Kedma, as well as a staged reading of his mother’s letters.

ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES (NYC):

A new series begins Thursday called “1995: The Year the Internet Broke” with a mix of sci-fi films like Hackers, the anime Ghost in the Shell, Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days, The Net, Johnny Mnemonic, Virtuosity and more. It looks like a pretty solid series, while the more obscure Dusan Makavjev, Cinema Unbound through Sunday. Next Tuesday begins “The Cinema of Gender Transgression” begins with Neil Jordan’s 2005 film Breakfast on Pluto.

NITEHAWK CINEMA  (NYC):

Williamsburg will show the Julia Roberts Oscar-winning Erin Brockovich and then the Friday night midnight offerings are Dan Bush’s newish The Dark Redand Ben Wheatley’s underrated 2012 movie Sightseers. Saturday morning screening is Joseph Mankiewicz’s All About Eve from 1950 but your other option is the ubiquitous Nicolas Cage in 1995’s Leaving Las Vegas. Monday night is a special screening of Anna Rose Holmer’s 2016 film The Fits as part of “Women’s Month.” (Next Tuesday night screening of Cage’s Gone in 60 Secondsis already sold out unfortunately.)

Over in Prospect Park, the Saturday brunch offering is Agnieszka Holland’s 1993 adaptation of The Secret Garden and then on Tuesday night is a screening of Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940) as part of “Woman’s Month.”

MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE (NYC):

“See it Big! Outer Space” continues this weekend with screenings of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity on Friday and Sunday and Star Trek: The Motion Picture on Saturday, plus 2001: A Space Odyssey screens on Saturday afternoon, per usual.

BAM CINEMATEK (NYC):

Kelly Reichardt Selects: First Cow In Context ends on Wednesday with Melville’s Le Cercle Rouge.

IFC CENTER (NYC)

CAPCOM'S INJUSTICES TO THEIR FANS

Many beloved franchises came from Capcom. They started the fighting game genre with Street Fighter. They gave us everyone's favorite blue bomber, Mega Man. They popularized the horror game concept with Resident Evil. They gave us Monster Hunter, which has a large cult following because of its online playability.

But in all of their success and growth, Capcom has lost touch with its fans and became an incredibly greedy company. They have abused DLC, released incomplete games, forced current games to become obsolete with re-releases, and seriously mishandled their franchises.

DLC

DLC has been at the center of Capcom's greed, so it is the best place to start. Capcom is not the first company to utilize DLC, but they were certainly one of the pioneers who invented its widespread practice. 

Alternate costumes or skins have always been an additional paid item, so I will not fault Capcom for creating hundreds of costumes for their games—even though many of them were developed pre-launch and used as a pre-order incentive. What I will fault them for however, is taking away a portion of a complete product on the disc and selling it as DLC.

First, in Marvel vs Capcom 3, retailers leaked that Jill and Shuma-Gorath would be DLC characters. This was before the game came out, and before the full roster was even revealed. For news of DLC characters to come out this early meant that the characters have already been completed but are being sold for extra profit. This was confirmed by data miners once they got their hands on the game.

Data miners also exposed Capcom's DLC tactic in the notorious case of Street Fighter x Tekken. They discovered that the 12 characters who were planned to be released as DLC were already on the disc! In other words, players were paying to unlock content already on their disc, instead of paying for content that was developed post-release.

Naturally, fans were outraged and demanded an explanation. Capcom replied with several poor excuses but the biggest one was "We wanted to save hard drive space on your consoles." In reality, developers don't care about how much HD space players have, and players don't ask developers to make their products take up less space. This is Capcom's poor attempt at disguising their greedy tactics as a favor towards the player.

Fast forward to Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite, and it's painfully clear that Capcom doesn't care about their reputation anymore. Their games have grown so big in communities and popularity that they know it will sell. Half a year before the game's release date, Capcom announced that there would be a season pass for 6 DLC characters. One of which is actually in the main storyline, causing fans to wonder if the character was already complete before release.

Judging by our experience with Street Fighter x Tekken, it's guaranteed that these characters will have already been developed by the time the game launches. And unlike SFV, there will not be a method to earn in-game currency to unlock these characters. In other words, Capcom is going full speed ahead with making players pay for a roster. Keep in mind that Infinite's initial roster size is smaller than Marvel 3, and Marvel 3's definitive version with extra characters is still smaller than Marvel 2's. So if you've been supporting the series, you’re getting less but paying more. 

RE-RELEASED GAMES

No one does re-releases worse than Capcom. The second iteration of Street Fighter IV, Super, was released as a separate disc rather than an optional upgrade for players who already own the original disc. So players who have kept up since the original release would have to pay a total of $100.00 to continue playing. This was the same case between MvC3 and Ultimate MvC3.

But for later iterations of SFIV, Arcade Edition and Ultra, players were given the option to upgrade from Super via DLC. And it's entirely possible with SFV, since that's how new characters are patched into the game. Capcom justified Super SFIV by saying that a separate disc was needed because of how much the game has changed between the different versions. However, this is yet again another poor excuse. Unless the game's core assets are changed, there is no reason to release a separate disc. You don't even have to understand how game programming works to know this. Just look at all the mods for PC games like Skyrim— everything can be drastically changed in a patch.

When SFV was announced, Capcom promised their fans there not be a re-release of the game. They intend to support the game over a long period of time with seasonal DLC characters. Not even a year later, the game has already begun to decline because players are not satisfied with the game’s balance and design. This is an opinion shared by both the casual and competitive gamers of all nationalities. The game is in dire need of a “rebirth” so we shall see if Capcom will break their promise and release Super SFV.  

INCOMPLETE GAMES:

Developers will try to be subtle with DLC and insist that it's to "add" to our gameplay experience, to "prolong" our enjoyment. Often times, what fans really find out is that the game is incomplete in terms of playability or content. And the "extra content" being sold as DLC, is actually an essential part to having a complete experience of the game, rather than a continuation of the experience.

There is no better example than Capcom's SFV. SFV was released with only 16 characters, no Arcade mode, a dysfunctional online mode and a barebones story mode. Yes, the fighting game genre has grown to the point where much of the playability is now in tournaments and online play, but this is hardly enough for newcomers who are spending $60.00 for an incomplete game!

Secondly, the price of DLC characters far exceeded the ease of earning in-game currency. In-game currency could only be earned once each mode, and once each character. In other words, there was a cap on in-game currency that can be earned. And very few people would be willing or able to complete Hard mode Survival with all of the characters.

In-game currency could also be earned by playing online, but players would have to grind it out despite Capcom saying you only have to "play a few hours here and there." But with dysfunctional online gameplay and constant server maintenance, players had even less time to play online. All in all, you'd have to invest a large amount of time to earn any of the characters if you want to avoid paying extra money for DLC characters.

The entire point of having an option to buy DLC characters for free was to compensate for the small starting roster, and their long-term goal of adding characters to the game. But they limited the ability to earn in-game currency so that players would be more inclined to purchase season passes. It wasn't until Season 2 that Capcom finally released more options to earn in-game currency, but they do little to help the costs of purchasing a DLC character.

With SFV, Capcom became a little more clever with their tactics. They come off as doing players a favor by having an in-game method of earning currency. But an average player would not want to put in so much time playing the game just to earn enough, so they would end up purchasing season passes anyway.

Even more than a year later, players are still unsatisfied with SFV as a product. It still lacks an Arcade mode, the cinematic story was a disappointment, there are numerous balance issues, and Capcom has still yet to address the many complaints of the game.

With Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite on the horizon, many feel that Capcom will not change their methods. First, Capcom has already announced a Season Pass for 6 DLC characters. Second, there is no in-game currency to purchase any of these characters. So right off the bat, MvC:I's complete roster will be monetized because of Capcom's greed. Even if players are interested in the game, they would have to shell out maybe twice or thrice the retail amount to have all the characters.  

MISHANDLING THEIR FRANCHISES

All of the above is proof that Capcom is mishandling their video game franchises. But no franchise has been treated worse than the Mega Man series. You will never see another franchise this popular and have no games made for it. Anniversary re-releases and mobile games don’t count.

It all started with Mega Man Legends 3, one of the biggest video game announcements of its time. Developers constantly updated us on Twitter and involved the fans with polls. And yet somehow, Capcom screwed up everything as usual.

Several months into development, they announced that a Prototype version of this game would be released. Essentially, it was the game’s prologue chapter released as a demo. Fans were pretty excited that they were going to get a taste of the game in the near future... except there were two problems.

First of all, fans would have to pay for it. That's right folks, what's supposed to be a free sample to the game is being sold as a product. Secondly, Capcom announced that development of the game hinges on the success of the Prototype’s sales. When you think about it, this is not that different than a ransom. Mega Man Legends 3's future is being held hostage by Capcom, and fans have to pay up money if they want to see the whole game.

Not only is this one of the worst video game development decisions ever made, it is also the only one of its kind. No other developer has ever done this before. The decision to sell a beta of the game in order to gauge interest only shows how incompetent and greedy the company is.

Mega Man is one of the most popular franchises in video game history and one of Capcom's earliest successes. The franchise itself is branched into many different series, and Legends is one of the more popular ones despite having only 2 titles. When Mega Man was announced for Super Smash Bros. 4, the world erupted with excitement. So for Capcom to use the Prototype to gauge interest is really just a lie to hide the fact that they were trying to monetize the game even further.

But the fans never even got a chance to prove their loyalty. 10 months after Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune mysteriously left the company, Capcom announced the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3. Outraged and confused, fans demanded an answer and Capcom said that the game did not receive enough support from its fans. But wasn't that the entire point of selling the Prototype? To see if its sales justify finishing the game?

The 3DS had sold 11.4 million units worldwide in the same year the game was cancelled. You don't need to do the math or be a statistician to understand that a popular franchise on a popular console would have been a huge success. So why did Capcom pull the plug on guaranteed profit?

Because they couldn't finish the project without Inafune. Like Sakurai, Inafune is the kind of director who oversees all aspects of the game. He may not be as involved as Sakurai is with Smash Bros., but his contribution to the game is large enough to be essential in the game’s development.

Most likely, Capcom tried to impose their greedy business tactics on Inafune’s creations, starting with the Prototype ordeal. Inafune disagreed, and eventually was let go or quit voluntarily. To control the damage, Capcom assured fans that MML3 would continue, but ultimately realized they could not finish the game without Inafune's vision. When the game was finally cancelled, their only excuse was "lack of fan support" because it's better than coming out and saying "We needed Inafune."

Ever since MML3's cancellation, Capcom has underutilized or misused the Mega Man brand. In SF x Tekken, they released "Bad Box Art" Mega Man as an actual character. This version of Mega Man is an obese, old, and pathetic version of Mega Man. It was meant to poke fun at America's terrible box art of the first Mega Man game, which has become a meme, but it was also a bad move on Capcom's part. Fighting game fans don't want a joke character, and Mega Man fans wanted to play their favorite blue hero again. This fad was only amusing to people who didn’t play SF x Tekken or don’t care about Mega Man. 

It might have been hilarious, but in light of MML3's cancellation, many felt it was an abusive mockery of the character Mega Man. In Marvel vs Capcom 3, many felt Capcom would be fools to pass up an opportunity to add Mega Man X. And Capcom proved them right— they instead added Zero and released a DLC skin for Zero to look like Mega Man X. Although Zero's presence in MvC3 was welcomed, fans also wanted to play as Mega Man X with his own voice and move set.

It was only until recently that Mega Man appeared favorably in crossovers. He was in both Project x Zone games, made a huge splash in Smash Bros. 4, and now he's back in Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. But if you exclude his crossover appearances and re-released ports, you will realize that Capcom has not made an original Mega Man game ever since MML3's cancellation.

This further proves that Capcom does not know how to make another Mega Man game without its creator, Inafune. The Mega Man brand is wasted on Capcom, and could be utilized to do so much more. With Mega Man's inclusion in Smash, many have even entertained the idea of transferring ownership to Nintendo, who did a great job of portraying Mega Man in Smash Bros. 4.

CONCLUSION

Anyone who kept up with Capcom within the past decade would know all of this. They know Capcom has a bad reputation when it comes to DLC and their greed, and they know that Capcom gets a lot of hate for how they approach their games. And most of all, they know there is no defense to Capcom.You can't say "They're a company who needs to make money" because all that does is state the obvious. Nobody denies that a company should make money, especially if their games are supported by DLC over the long term. But there's justifying DLC with post-development expenses, and then there's painfully obvious greed- and I shouldn't have to explain which one Capcom falls under.Take a look at Nintendo with Fire Emblem Awakening, Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros. 4. All of these games have DLC that you have to pay for just like Capcom's games, but there are two major differences.

First of all, their games are complete. Fire Emblem Awakening is a lengthy RPG full of side quests, and a full army of recruitable units. DLC is not an essential part of the full experience. There is only one supplementary story DLC, but the rest are bonus maps that help with EXP growth and earning currency.

Mario Kart 8 comes with a full roster of characters and still has 8 cups with 4 race tracks each. The game improved on the popular kart customization and online gameplay. Their DLC consists of characters and tracks that were developed after the game's release. Even if there were no DLC, there would be no complaints about the lack of content or how incomplete the game feels.

When it comes to content, very few games can match Smash Bros. 4, pound for pound. The roster size increased from Brawl's 39 to a whopping 51 characters at launch. They added a mode where 8 players can play at once. Every stage now has a "competitive" version for the more hardcore tournament players. And the game was released on both the Wii U and 3DS. With so many modes, characters, and options to play, you’re definitely getting more than your 60 dollars’ worth. 

All of the game's DLC were also developed post-release. Many of the fans strongly favored DLC characters to see new faces or old personal favorites come back, and Sakurai delivered on both. Even in ARMS, developers have announced that all of their future DLC would be free. Nintendo a great example of how DLC should be done. Their games are complete, delivered on time, and any ideas that couldn't make it into the main game are sold as DLC.

Let's take a look at SNK, a fellow fighting game developer like Capcom but with even less popularity and a smaller budget. On launch, the game had a full roster of 50 characters and a complete story mode. 7 months later, they released 4 DLC characters that fans wanted the most. Their two new stages were also free, unlike Capcom. On top of that, some of their DLC costumes were temporarily free to download. And even though their game had awful visuals, SNK released a patch to improves its textures and now the game looks significantly better.

How is it possible that SNK was able to release a more complete product and provide better support than Capcom? It's because of Capcom's greed, incompetence, and complacency. In their greed, Capcom sacrifices the quality of their game to make a profit. Because of their incompetence, Capcom can't even properly balance their fighting games, leaving their competitive community frustrated. And because their brand is so popular, Capcom has become complacent and therefore puts less effort into their games.

I cannot support Capcom as a consumer, even if their games are enjoyable, I cannot give them money in good conscience knowing how many times they screwed their fans over. Unfortunately, many fighting game enthusiasts grew up with Capcom games and developed an emotional attachment to them. Even if they have their complaints, it’s difficult to let go of Street Fighter and Marvel. They reluctantly stick with the games or convince themselves to enjoy it. Either way, they are enabling Capcom's behavior, so Capcom will not "learn from their mistakes." They will continue sacrificing the integrity and quality of their game to make a profit. Someday, I hope the magic of nostalgia and loyalty runs out, and that they brand burns to the ground. 

I hope for a future where their franchises are bought off by other companies who can utilize them better. I hope for a future where the trend of overtly greedy DLC is punished by boycotts. I hope for a future where the integrity and content of video games are no longer sacrificed for a quick buck.

As the tech and business team at BuzzFeed News, we love stuff. Gizmos, gadgets, games, and gear. So here are some of the many things that we tried this year and wholeheartedly recommend.

1. Forest App — Free

Can you go half a minute without checking Twitter, or TikTok, or Facebook? I bet you didn’t make it through that sentence without gazing longingly at another tab. How does one get work done in such a distracting world? Some of us have given up. For the rest of us, there’s Forest. No, not the one with trees. Don’t get carried away. I’m talking about Forest, the app, and also a browser extension, that helps you concentrate. When you use Forest, you can choose to block certain websites, or stop using your phone, for 25 minutes intervals. When you start your countdown, Forest displays a small shrub, which grows until it’s a fully mature digital tree at the 25-minute mark. If you try to navigate to your forbidden websites — which you can whitelist or blacklist — you will kill your tree. And since you don’t want to be a tree murderer, you will concentrate and enrich your life, or your company, and live happily ever after.

2. Google Doodle Polls — Free

Toward the end of 2018, I attended my first meeting for what became the BuzzFeed News Union. When it was time to plan when we’d meet next, there came that inevitable murmur of everyone pulling up their calendars, throwing out a bunch of dates, and then someone else saying they weren’t free — but how about this day? Rather than let that agony go on any longer, I volunteered to just make a Doodle. “What’s a Doodle?” someone asked. “What’s a DOODLE?!” I probably shrieked back, stunned that so many people didn’t know about the productivity tool I’ve been loyally using for at least six years.

Doodle is pretty simple: It’s a scheduling tool that makes planning meetings ridiculously easy. You select a bunch of possible dates and send them to the attendees. They check off which dates they could do. At the end, you have a neat little tally showing which day most people are free.

But Doodle isn’t just for meetings! It’s also how I kept my book club a well-oiled machine this year. And there’s truly no better way to plan a dinner with that group of friends you’ve been meaning to catch up with. Maybe I sound like a square using a productivity tool to manage relationships, but it’s the simplest way to push past the “I’ve just been so busy!!” excuses and find time to see the people you love. I often find myself wondering what else I could be using Doodle for: A family reunion? A weekend trip with my college friends? And when will Doodle integrate with dating apps? Can it please be now?

Several months — and more than a dozen Doodle polls — later, we officially formed the BuzzFeed News Union. And while that was mostly thanks to the hard work of my colleagues, I like to think Doodle deserves a little bit of credit as well.

3. Apple EarPods — Free With an iPhone

At the end of 2017, I said that Apple’s AirPods were my favorite gadget of the year. At the end of 2019, I am retracting my opinion. AirPods are trash — after about two years, when the tiny battery in each one begins to die, and your $159 pair of earphones start sputtering out in minutes. Your only recourse is buying an expensive, out-of-warranty replacement or a brand-new pair from Apple.

So earlier this year, I abandoned my AirPods for something a lot less sexy: the simple white wired earbuds that came with my iPhone.

Sure, I can’t plug EarPods, which is what Apple officially calls them, into my MacBook, something that drives me nuts, and sure, I have wires dangling out of my ears like we all did not that long ago. But they also NEVER die on me in the middle of a podcast because the battery died, and I NEVER have to charge them, and if I ever lose them, new ones are $29 a pop, far less than what a single replacement AirPod costs. And they don’t sound any worse than AirPods.

When AirPods work, they are magical. But when they flake out, as AirPods inevitably will, they make the simple act of listening an experience fraught with anxiety — I could never predict when I’d hear the telltale chirp in my ears that meant the battery was depleted, sometimes just minutes after a full charge.

Now, I shove my trusty little EarPods into my ears and just go. Around me, millions of human beings swirl freely, unencumbered by wires, but hours later, my EarPods keeping playing and playing and playing. It’s magical — and it works every time.

4. Google Home Mini — $14.99 on Amazon

This year, for me, has been about investing some energy into making the devices and apps I regularly use fit into my life better. It’s weird that the technology’s default mode right now is changing human behavior rather than adapting to it. After moving to a new apartment, I realized the Google Home I’ve had for about two years really couldn’t cover multiple rooms, so on a lark I picked up a Google Home Mini and threw it in my bedroom. The two devices work seamlessly together. I bought a bunch of cheap Wi-Fi outlets and plugged some lamps into them in different rooms, which lets me turn lights on and off like I’m living on the starship Enterprise. I can move a song on Spotify around my apartment, from one Google Home to another. The Mini’s speaker is just the right size for a bedroom. In the morning, it tells me the weather and plays a few headlines. This all sounds extremely basic and it is, but it’s also exactly the right relationship I think we should have with smarthome technology — add a little bit at a time when you feel like it, see if you like it, casually adjust accordingly, have fun with it.

5. Feedly and Pocket Apps — $6/month and $4.99/month

Over the last four years, my personal internet had mostly shrunk down to just Twitter — which is by all accounts an irredeemably awful website full of the worst kind of content being created by the worst people on Earth. To fix this, I started paying for the RSS reader Feedly ($6 a month) and the read-it-later app Pocket ($4.99 a month). I mainly use Feedly for work. The paid version supports Google Alerts and works really well on mobile. Pocket, according to my phone’s screen time, is regularly in my top three most-used apps. I’ve used the free version for years, but the paid version has a really powerful search function, which means that whatever I put in there is easily findable, online and off. Pocket also has a Spotify-like algorithm that is always recommending me stuff to read based on what I’ve previously loaded in there (it used to be better, but sadly now it mostly just recommends Pocket originals which I’m kinda meh on). Both apps have helped me focus better, follow the news more easily, and actually enjoy the long-forgotten feeling of digging into something interesting on the internet. Read more websites in 2020!

6. Nintendo Switch — $298.99 on Amazon

I’ve technically had a Switch for about a year and a half, originally buying it for a European vacation with lots of train rides. In the last year, I really dove into its catalog of games. I’m by no means a Real Gamer — I’m 30 and the last system I owned was a Nintendo GameCube. That means I mainly just want to play a bunch of cartoony RPGs, remakes of old games, and a bunch of party games for when friends come over. I also travel a lot. All of these things make the Switch one of my favorite devices. Big games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Astral Chain, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and this month’s Pokémon Sword and Shield are genuine joys. And the Nintendo store has all kinds of cheap mid-sized games that you can just jump into whenever you want to kill some time, like Untitled Goose Game, Sonic Mania, and Hollow Knight. The console is also incredibly portable with a shockingly good battery life. Plus, Nintendo has for the most part avoided the toxic cultural wars that follow other video games. Instead, I can come home, lay around with my Switch, and spend a mindless couple hours trying to catch a shiny Galarian Rapidash in peace.

7. Instagram’s Close Friends Stories — Free

As someone whose private Instagram account is PG-13 at its absolute most risqué, I initially brushed off Instagram’s “close friends” stories feature as unnecessary. But Instagram has become my main means of sharing and communicating, my followers now include my boss, colleagues, aunts, married high school friends, acquaintances — as well as several dudes from Hinge who will apparently continue watching my stories until one of us dies. So the close friends feature has become my go-to. Whether I want to deliver an update while perhaps being a little drunker than advisable, share a meme without individually messaging it to seven different people, or just generally be a little sad/weird/vulnerable online, close friends has become both a micro version of a finsta and the realest version of myself I share anywhere on the internet. It’s some small comfort to take back a bit of privacy on social media — as much as privacy exists there at all, of course.

8. Scam Goddess — Free

The summer of scam may be over, but scam springs eternal — and Laci Mosley keeps us informed on Earwolf’s Scam Goddess podcast. She’s tackled everything from Anna Delvey, aka the Soho Scammer, that nationwide Airbnb scam, and the absolutely bonkers Ukrainian orphan story since the podcast began in September. Mosley’s guests have included Paul F. Tompkins, Lauren Lapkus, and Nicole Byer, so while the show can’t help being hysterical, at least once per episode she delivers a line so strikingly, memorably, out-of-left-field funny that I find myself rewinding to listen over and over again. Scam Goddess is true crime without the ick factor, a bubblegum fun listen with a dose of education, and a breath of fresh air in my podcast feed.

9. Silicone Case for Apple TV Remote — $7.45 on Amazon

This was the year I finally cut the cord on cable television, which meant I used the Apple TV remote a lot more than before. I have a fourth gen Apple TV (the 2015 release that was the first model with Siri), and my chief complaint is that the remote is incredibly slippery. Not only do I find it slippery in terms of trying to scroll with my thumb on the trackpad, but the damned thing flies out of my hand like a bar of soap in the tub. I literally marvel at it sometimes wondering how Apple sells something that is impossible to hold. Steve would never!

Here’s where the silicone sleeve comes in. It’s anti-slip, and it gives a tiny bit more girth and bulk to the remote to make it easier to hold. My only regret is buying it in black. I’d recommend getting a bright, easy-to-see color, because you know the Apple TV remote is always getting lost.

10. Idagio Classical Music Streaming App — Free or $9.99/month

A few years ago, I wrote an article about the current state of the used CD market and discovered that one genre that still thrives on CD is classical. It isn’t just the better sound quality or that it’s for old people (OK, maybe that’s part of it), but rather that streaming apps like Spotify are terrible at organizing classical music. Unlike pop music, where Spotify’s algorithms and playlists can create amazing guesses on what you’d like to hear, classical is quite different.

The metadata is different — do you want to search by composer or conductor, orchestra or soloist? Also, many classical “albums” have several composers — a CD might be one orchestra’s concert of Mozart and Beethoven together, making an album search confusing. And there are dozens of versions of specific pieces recorded by different groups.

Idagio was recommended to me by a few people on Twitter after I tweeted complaining about the lack of good streaming for classical. The paid version (I signed up for a free week trial) was great — interesting curated playlists, good search, and recommendations — everything you’d want from a dedicated streaming app for classical. You can browse by composer, ensemble, conductor, soloist, genre, period, or even instrument. There are curated playlists from composers and soloists and even things like highlights from the London Symphony’s 2019–2020 season.

That said, I didn’t feel up to paying $9.99/month for yet another streaming service. I already pay for Spotify’s family plan, plus SiriusXM (which is soooo expensive, but I need my Howard Stern). So I canceled it after the free trial.

But this fall, Idagio released a free version. Not all the features of the paid version are available on the free version, crucially the ability to play a specific track. For example, you can’t play an exact Richard Strauss song, but you can play the Essential Richard Strauss radio playlist. Even so, it’s still the best free classical listening experience you can get.

11. Curology — Subscriptions From $24.90/Month

Perhaps it was naive of me, but I assumed that once I got out of my teenage years, I wouldn’t have to worry about acne. And then I hit my late twenties, and BOOM — some sort of cursed second puberty, complete with painful cyst-like zits that I couldn’t remember having as a youth. I tried every “miracle” mask, face wash, toner, acne cream, oil, etc. Nothing helped.

In May, after years of extreme self-consciousness every time I had a flare-up, I stumbled across a thread on the /r/SkinCareAddiction subreddit about Curology, a subscription mail-order acne medication service. Since I had nothing to lose, I gave it a try. A week and a half later, I got a little white bottle in the mail that literally changed my life.

It’s been six months and the hormonal acne on my chin that I thought I’d be cursed with forever is all but nonexistent. The discoloration marks on my chin and around my nose have begun to fade and my skin tone is even in a way that it’s never been before. When I get a zit or two, they aren’t painful and they’re gone after a few days of my normal cleaning and Curology routine. My prescriber has answered every question I’ve had promptly and I have yet to have any problems with my shipment — and I still can’t believe I’m only paying $40 every other month for something that’s had such a profound change on my skin and day-to-day existence.

12. SoFi Banking App — Free

Banks suck. I like money just fine, but I’ve always resented the institutions that hold onto the money for me. For years, I had a checking account at Wells Fargo, which, thanks to a massive scandal in which the company opened at least 3.5 million “potentially unauthorized” accounts, I now very much regret. Then I put my money in a local credit union, which somehow meant I was never able to access it unless I went to one specific office in San Francisco that never seemed to be open. So when I needed to open a new account earlier this year, you can imagine my trepidation — send my money to an evil empire with a UX from 1995 or to a rickety storefront in some basement, which also somehow had a UX from 1995?

Enter SoFi, the startup lending company which launched a mobile banking and investment app in February. I opened an account and now do all my finances from the free mobile app. It’s great. It’s a money market account, so I earn a small amount on my deposit and can easily pay bills, transfer money (similar to Venmo), and invest in the low-fee index funds dear to my heart. The UX looks like it was designed in this decade, and the investment side isn’t cluttered up with a bunch of unintelligible quant gibberish. (Looking directly at you, E-Trade.)

My eyes aren’t closed. SoFi seems to have previously been a terrible place to work. I sincerely hope the culture is better for employees under new CEO Anthony Noto, because I really like this app. Now if I could just convince my boomer psychotherapist to let me pay him on it instead of writing paper checks.

13. Frogstagram — Free

Frogs: They’re usually small, sometimes green, and always delightful to follow on Instagram.

I stumbled upon Frogblr, the unofficial community of frog-owning Tumblr users, in early 2018. In the months following that, I realized many of my favorite frog blogs also had frog-themed Instagram accounts. So in 2019, I fully committed and now follow more than a dozen Instagram accounts operated by frog owners.

There’s @stickyfrogs, which features frogs named Gumby, Jeans, Voight, and Tiny. I also love @moonnight.17, which has wonderfully TINY frogs, as well as small snakes and geckos. I’m also a fan of @frog.wizard_, which has extremely earnest frog-themed memes. Also, @the_froggy_momma is great. She features dozens of different amphibians and reptiles, including frogs named Buttercup, Bertha (who has three legs), Norman, and Darla.

Of course, the frogs are incredibly cute. I love their big eyes and oddly shaped little bodies. But it’s equally joyful to watch their owners livestream the frogs, call them goofy names, and brag about everything they do (which is, in all honesty, not very much). It’s very sincere. I’d highly recommend going through the #frogsofinstagram tag and findings some accounts to follow.

14. Nuking All the Digital Evidence From Before My Haircut — Free

Bangs are not just my haircut. They are a crucial part of my personality. There are two stages of my life: before bangs and after. If you ever have the misfortune of glancing at my giant forehead, you will understand.

I got bangs in January 2017. Tragically, that is not very long ago. So I decided this year to delete and untag myself in any Instagram or Facebook photos before bangs. I also deleted all of my tweets in January 2018, which would have included any images of me from before I got my haircut.

This may sound dramatic. However, I promise it is not. If I’m honest, this isn’t just about liking my current haircut. It’s about having some control over the ways that I’m seen online. I keep the number of public pictures of me to an absolute minimum, and exercising some private control over my image feels like a natural extension of that instinct. Now with bangs.

15. TikTok — Free

It’s more than just funny, although it’s funnier than almost anything on television. TikTok is as much a portal into the everyday lives of other people as Chatroulette ever was, but without the expectation to engage with what you’re seeing. It’s the only social app on which I follow only delightful strangers, don’t consume content from anyone I know, nor feel pressure to post content myself. TikTok shows me a greater diversity of race, class, and, yes, age than any other platform I currently have access to. I’ve watched videos made by Mennonite teenagers, by hippie grandmas, by immigrant families. TikTok isn’t all jokes; I’ve watched girls do interpretive dances to the soundtrack of abusive boyfriends and screaming parents. I’ve watched videos expressing queer pride, native pride, ethnic pride. I’ve watched hours of TikToks; I’ve watched TikToks about being a 30-year-old woman addicted to TikTok. I conceal the extent of my TikTok watching from my partner.

I used to be addicted to Instagram, scrolling endlessly and closing the app only to immediately reopen it seconds later. But now, that pink and orange neon square doesn’t beckon the way it used to. I’d rather be watching TikToks, which pass no judgment on my baking, never make me wonder if I’m taking enough vacations, buying enough candles, or wearing fuzzy enough sweaters. What TikTok offers is comedic, absurd, and intimate. The only problem is now I need headphones in public, and I might be under surveillance by the Chinese state.

16. Send to Kindle for Google Chrome — Free

I’m trying to spend less time looking at my phone and have become obsessed with looking at my screen time stats (in the iPhone’s settings app). My most-used app, other than Instagram, is always Safari or Pocket, because that’s where I read long articles — actually, where I try to read long articles, but never finish in one sitting because some news alert or push notification has pulled me away from the story.

In an attempt to create a more distraction-free reading space, I’ve started to send any article of length to my Kindle, which has a black-and-white screen that’s more comfortable on the eyes. This Chrome extension makes it so easy. It grabs all the text on the page and zooms it right over to my e-ink reader in less than a minute. And it really works! I plowed through an entire ~3,800-word piece without reading one incoming WhatsApp and loved every minute of it!! (BTW, the fantastic, multithousand-word story is by my colleague Katherine Miller, and you will not regret spending 15 uninterrupted minutes on it.)

17. Tile Pro — $35 and Tile Sticker — $40 2-pack

I’ve been yelling at people to get Tile’s Bluetooth-enabled thing finders, for years, but with the caveat that the device’s biggest flaw is the way it handles its battery, which is glued onto the device’s circuit board and can’t be replaced. Not great for the environment.

Well, the latest version of the Tile Pro finally has a replaceable battery!!! This is huge because the Tile really is a wonderful little doodad for helping you find keys, your kid’s fave toy, etc., and now you don’t have to throw away the entire device when it runs out of juice a year from now.

There’s another new Tile, called Sticker, which unfortunately doesn’t have a replaceable battery, but it lasts three years, which is very good for an always-on Bluetooth device. It’s also small enough to put on my AirPods case and stick discreetly on my bike. I haven’t lost either yet — but I am a huge fan of these tiny things.

18. Streaming Co-Op — Free

It has been active for years, but in 2019 my streaming cooperative really began to shine. The idea is so obvious that you may be in one already: a group of friends — comrades, one might call them — who each subscribe to one streaming service and share the login details with all the others.

As it currently stands, I pay for Netflix, a friend in San Francisco pays for Hulu and another here in New York pays for HBO Now. We all pay for Amazon Prime, because Amazon. The co-op is currently onboarding a fourth member who will pay for Disney+. Scale!

Sharing passwords like this might go against the fine print of the average streaming user agreement, but it doesn’t seem to be against the spirit of them — most allow two and sometimes four seperate devices, in completely different locations, to be streaming simultaneously. Unless we’re talking about a situation where every member of the co-op is watching the same service at the same time (Does this really happen in a post-GoT world??), you should be just fine.

And given the trend, this might be the only workable model for watching stuff in the 2020s: Apple, Netflix, Amazon, HBO, and Hulu will all have exclusive shows you can’t see anywhere else, while Disney and its fellow content mega-giants will be using their vast libraries to funnel people into their own platforms. In a world with 8 to 10 streaming services each demanding 12 bucks a month — and we’re not even including cable channels, for those who want live sports or CNN or whatever — a co-op is the only game in town. Viewers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your passwords.

19. Buy Nothing Project — Free

On Jan. 1, 2019, Netflix released Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, a reality series consisting of eight episodes of sweet lifestyle porn. The smiling, soft-spoken, petite host gently floats into people’s messy, cluttered homes, like an organizational Mary Poppins, and — from the shambles — helps them create a peaceful space to live and breathe and be joyful. Deep. There were moments during the show, however, when I wondered what exactly happened to all that perfectly usable stuff that Kondo helped them thank in a moment of ritual silence before tossing it into a trash bag in the driveway. Is it all headed to the landfill before ending up in crushed shards in some whale’s guts or up some turtle’s nostril?

One answer to this problem is the Buy Nothing Project, a network of local groups on Facebook started in 2013 “to quickly get rid of things that are cluttering their lives, or simply to save money by getting things for free.” The groups — which have popped up around the world — are organized by city, sometimes even by neighborhood. Some members post items they’re ready to “gift” to their neighbors, and others post things they need, in case anyone happens to be looking to expel that object from their house.

People gift clothes they no longer want or that don’t fit, furniture that doesn’t work in a new apartment (even a fireplace), storage and packing boxes, cosmetics and other beauty products that aren’t exactly the color or scent they were looking for, kitchen gadgets and spices they don’t use — the list goes on. One popular member regularly gives away extra bagels (local hero!). My most recent acquisition was a bunch of baby spider plants from an indoor gardening enthusiast who is propagating her plants and who — it turns out — lives across the street from me. It can be a nice way to meet neighbors with shared interests, which is part of the project’s ethos: “A gift economy’s real wealth is the people involved and the web of connections that forms to support them.”

I’ve found it to be an especially fabulous resource for new parents like me, since babies grow out of (or grow tired of) everything in just a few short months — onesies, shoes, toys, feeding gear — and a Buy Nothing group creates a pipeline to people in a similar life stage as you and who also live near you. It’s way easier than holding a yard sale and preferable to plopping a box of stuff on the sidewalk with a “FREE” sign and hoping for the best.

Life is fluid and ever-changing, but most of our stuff outlives its utility. I’ve really embraced the idea of letting things go when I no longer need them. My place isn’t Marie Kondo–level tidy — and probably never will be — but a Facebook group that facilitates free, no-landfill decluttering really can spark joy.

20. #great-tweets — Free

This feels kind of like cheating because this isn’t a product that normies can access. Also it’s not new: I’ve been using it for the last two-and-a-half years at BuzzFeed News, when in my first week here someone showed me its greatness and my world perspective was forever changed. With this product — or more aptly place — the 473 people who can see it will on any given day find memes about Baby Yoda, a listing for a toddler’s (unused) Minion coffin, wedding photos from the holy matrimony between two water coolers, and screenshots of an influencer tanning their perineum, a.k.a. “buttchugging sunlight”. And that was all just on a random Monday in November.

This wonderful watering hole of content is known within BuzzFeed as #great-tweets, a Slack channel open to everyone at the company where folks pop in to just share really good tweets. There’s little conversation — save for the emoji reactions that fellow great-tweeters use to express their gratitude or disgust — and each day it’s a continuous stream of hits, 10 to 15 of the funniest, weirdest, nastiest things taken from the blue bird hellsite that most of us here spend too much time on. Maybe the tweets have been ripped from another platform (TikTok is a pretty popular source these days). Maybe the tweets have already gone superviral. But they are our great tweets, and we love them.

While I feel a little dirty sharing the existence of my colleague’s secret space with the public, #great-tweets is just that good. After spending some pretty terrible days online at work, I’ve spent many a night lying in bed laughing my ass off because someone shared a tweet with a hypothetical conversation between a cat and an octopus in a standoff, or a cow wearing a VR headset. It’s one of the few things that I know can consistently bring me joy on the web and I hope when I go, I too will be memorialized in the channel.

21. Neato Botvac D7 — $599.99

One of the best things to happen to my family in 2019 was Kevin, the robotic vacuum cleaner. Kevin is a BOTVAC D7, and he is a cleaning monster in a household of 4 sloppy humans, 2 sloppier dogs, and a cat aghast at their collective sloppiness. When my home is dirty, I summon Kevin from my phone. Kevin is always ready to clean. He is very good with dust and dirt, and — crucially — his blade-and-bristle brush makes short work of dog hair, which is in issue in home with 200 lbs. of doggo, where things can go from relatively clean to dog park very quickly. When Kevin gets stuck or encounters an insurmountable obstacle, he messages me asking for help. It feels stupid to say it, but I find this adorable. Part of this is because that help typically involves picking Kevin up like a baby and relocating him to an easier navigate area. And part of it is because afterwards Kevin will message me again noting — like a dorky little grade school cartographer — that he has updated his map of my home. Two things here: 1. Kevin uses exclamation points! 2. I can use this map to create zones for targeted cleaning (kitchen, dog bowl area) and also out-of-bounds areas for Kevin to ignore (dog bed, dog). My home is a small one, so Kevin’s advertised battery life of 120 minutes has always been plenty. He automatically switches cleaning modes when running on wood, carpet, or tile. Typically, there is no (to little) visible dog hair on those surfaces when Kevin is in town. Kevin’s lone flaw, as best I can tell, is that his dirt bin can be easily overwhelmed during spring “blow,” but in a house with these two, who wouldn’t be.

BURBANK, California How do you react to poor fan reaction?

That was the question that Benny and Rafi Fine, the brothers known for their popular YouTube channels, had to ask themselves in January after many of their viewers became angered over their (now defunct) initiative.

The duo’s goal was to give creators worldwide access to 11 of their company’s various shows and trademarks, including their franchise of “react” videos (in which groups of people, including kids, teens and adults, react to various topics). But many argued the “React” brand is not the Fine Brothers’ to license and viewed it as an attempt to claim profits over every “reaction” video out there. It only took five days before the pair apologized and discontinued the program.

Now it’s been eight months since the drama and Benny and Rafi have moved on, with hopes that their fans have too. The new challenge they face is getting their audience to trust and care about them again.

For the Fines, that means refocusing on doing what they do best: Making and distributing content.

“Our intentions were not what people thought they were. It was a very simple plan from our regard: A cool new initiative that wasn’t going to do anything bad to anyone,” Rafi said in a recent interview with Mashable at the Fine Brothers Entertainment office in Burbank. “People still think we’re trying to do something bad.”

“It was what it was,” Benny added. “There’s not much you can do about the reality when those things happen, beyond trying to look through clouds of it, find out what’s the essence of this, realize, learn from it. We learned this is not something we should be doing let’s just move on from on it and go back to what we had been doing. We’re fully and totally refocusing.”

Making moves

Benny and Rafi, who grew up in Brooklyn, have a typical brotherly rapport.

At 33, Rafi, the youngest, is slightly more hipster and mellow. He is often seen sporting a beanie. Meanwhile, Benny, 35, speed talks his way through conversations, with Rafi either interrupting or finishing his sentences.

The duo has been making online content since 2004, before YouTube even launched. They were instrumental in the success of Maker Studios, now owned by Disney.

Now, Fine Brothers Entertainmentn functions as a full-fledged media company, studio and network.

The company produces 10 serialized shows every week for over 20 million YouTube subscribers, as well as other digital platforms and linear television.

That includes scripted, non-scripted, animated, sketch, interactive, and, of course, the react videos.

The company’s videos getnearly 150 million views each month, and their channels overall have more than 5 billion lifetime video views.There are now about 55 people working at FBE full-time, who produce an average 12 videos per week.

Over the last year, the Fines have made a handful of big hires, including Brandie Tucker,who produced Big Brother and Hell’s Kitchen, and Andrea Kinloch, who previously worked for AOL Original Video and Warner Bros.

“It’s definitely been a year of building out a team we can grow on top of and scale in a much easier and faster way,” Rafi said. “With so many new platforms, we have to innovate how to make content on such a mass scale. On top of it, we’re also making TV shows and features and everything.”

Now, they are in the process of expanding their offices, by adding another floor with tons more studio space.

The Burbank office space (of which they inhabit three floors of) is not the average studio set-up.

For starters, the office is sort semi-hidden: there’s no sign outside the building indicating that it’s FBE’s headquarters (so fans don’t crowd outside, FBE execs said).

The first thing guests are greeted with at the reception area is a table filled with books written by YouTubers and snacks. Lots of snacks.

The bright blue walls are decked out with Fine Bros Entertainment memorabilia, including a few boards which people who have participated in “React” videos sign. They also proudly display some of their many awards, including a Webby, a Streamy Award and a Daytime Emmy.

Before expansion, there were just two sets utilized by all staffers, with a white board outlining the daily filming schedule for each space. With the added floorspace, employees will be adding areas for filming.

Much of the third floor will remain dedicated to the post-production team, which holes up in areas. (One of the editing suites is appropriately nicknamed “the lair.”)

Upping the slate

To the average Hollywood honcho, it’s hard to explain what exactly FBE is. That’s where Kinloch, Tucker and Matt Labate VP of Channels, Strategy and Audience, come in.

Tucker comes from the TV development world, where she produced TV series such as Big Brother, Hells Kitchen, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and the upcoming show on MTV Epic Win!.

Her goal is to build a bridge with traditional Hollywood outlets.

Luckily, FBE has already built itself in Hollywood enough to have brand recognition. The company has been behind TruTV show Six Degrees of Everything, Nickelodeon’s ReactToThat (made in partnership with Nick Canon) and ABC Family’s Superfan Suite for its hit show Pretty Little Liars.

“Fine Bros Entertainment knows fandom better than anyone,” Tucker told Mashable. “We know how to tap into what people obsess over. And that’s valuable.”

Kinloch, meanwhile, is responsible for making deals with brands and licensing content (including to international TV networks and education partners).

The hope is that people see FBE for what it is: A nontraditional entertainment company capable of doing traditional material while still tapping in to digital audiences.

“We’re not necessarily the influencer but we’re not traditional media,” Rafi said. “We’re very much a hybrid. We find ourselves in that middle ground.”

Another company that has mastered this hybrid is Rooster Teeth.

The Austin-based production company, behind hits such asRed vs. Blue, was founded in 2003 by YouTubers Matt Hullum and Burnie Burns and then acquired by digital entertainment company Fullscreen in 2014.

Since then, the company has amassed more than 20 million subscribers to its YouTube Network, as well as 3 million unique monthly visitors to its RoosterTeeth.com hub and 1.8 million registered community members.

FBE has always been working on expanding its slate, but ove the last year the focus was to delve into more long-form projects.

So in January, it came as no surprise when one of FBE’s projects was announced as part of YouTube Red’s first line-up of originals

SING IT!, a half-hour sitcom that provides a satirical take on singing competition shows, was made in partnership with traditional studio Mandeville Films.

The 10-episode show is a workplace comedy about a singing competition show (a la American Idol or The Voice).

It features a mix of traditional and digital stars including Mircea Monroe (Hart of Dixie) Missi Pyle (Gone Girl), Debby Ryan (Disney Channels Jessie) and Mark Sullivan (Guest of a Nation). It also includes actual singing competition alumni, including Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo (the married couple that competed onAmerican Idol) andLeah Lewis (The Voice Season Four). Guest stars include Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars), YouTube stars Sam Tsui, Todrick Hall and Tim DeLaGhetto.

WithSing It!, YouTube Red viewers could actually vote for which fictional contestant they want to win ahead of the final episode. Contestants were then eliminated based on who viewers pick, giving an immersive element to the digital show.

FBE also just relaunched the animated series Emo Dad. The entire season is on Fullscreen’s SVOD service already but episodes also become available weekly on YouTube.

“There’s kind of a trifecta of things always going on at our company,” Benny said. “There’s the digital side of things, which is just as big as it’s ever been and growing on month-to-month basis. At the same time, opportunities with shows like Sing It! are leading to other things and now we are starting to move toward more long-form scripted [content]. The brand integration side is the third wing.”

Up next? “Soo many things,” Benny said.

Plus, Fine Brothers Entertainment will have a new addition to its growing react franchise called “CELEBS React,” which will launch later this year.

FBE partnered with Fullscreen for the show, which will live on the Fullscreen’s SVOD platform and the FBE channel.

The overall goal is to “extend olive branches” to as many distribution outlets and create quality content, the Fine brothers said.

But even as FBE continues to grow both in terms of content and company size Benny and Rafi emphasize they want to remain connected with their fans and the digital world.

They end every Wednesday all-hands meeting with two traditions.

The first, reading a round-up of notes from the office’s “good shit” box, where employees can submit compliments about each other. For example, one employee wrote a note praising another for “slaying” in a recent video shoot.

Then, the Fine brothers read a fan letter. On this particular day, Benny chose one that was written out on a typewriter.

Benny read an excerpt aloud:

“I’ve been struggling with depression, but your shows mean so much to me. They introduced me to a whole world of pop culture.”

The entire room applauded.

Hey readers. I'm back! Today I'm going to talk about one of my sort of favorite groups, Twice. I think their music is good along with their dancing. They're really preppy and I don't really like preppy groups, but I can tolerate them. So now I'm going to give some background information about them. Twice is a South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment through the 2015 reality show Sixteen. The group is composed of nine members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. The group debuted on October 20, 2015, with the mini-album The Story Begins. Pre-debut: On December 19, 2013, JYP Entertainment announced that they would debut a new girl group in the first half of 2014, the first female group to come out of the company since the debut of miss A in 2010. On February 27, 2014, JYP trainees Lena and Cecilia were confirmed as members of the group, while other rumored members included JYP trainees Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Jisoo (later Jihyo) and Minyoung. After Cecilia's departure, JYP trainee Sana replaced her and 6mix was about to debut when Lena left the company, effectively canceling their debut. On February 11, 2015, Park Jin-young announced that the lineup of JYP's upcoming seven member girl group would be decided through Sixteen, a competition survival show that would air on Mnet later that year. Park explained in a press conference prior to the show's airing that he hoped the group would "have the Wonder Girls' and miss A's natural, healthy feel, with an edgier and wilder side. I want to upgrade this next group by adding elements like hip-hop and rap.” The show began on May 5th and ended with Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, and Chaeyoung as the seven Twice members. JYP then announced that he would be increasing the size of the group from 7 members to 9 by adding Tzuyu, who was the "audience's pick" since she was the most popular contestant by the show's end, and Momo, who was added by JYP himself since he felt the group needed someone with Momo's performance abilities. The decision was controversial at the time with many people complaining about eliminated contestants being able to join the group. Twice was to debut in late 2015. On July 10, 2015, Twice opened their official Instagram account with the first picture of the nine members posing together. JYP Entertainment released TwiceTV, a web series that shared the members' hopes and stories through interviews and followed them as they prepared for their debut. Now let's move onto the members. Im Na-yeon was born on September 22, 1995 (age 21) in Seoul, South Korea. Nayeon secretly tried out and passed JYP Entertainment's 7th Open Audition and became a trainee on September 15, 2010. In 2013, she was cast as a member of 6mix, a JYP girl group that was planned but never debuted. Prior to Sixteen and her debut as a member of Twice, she appeared in few television advertisements and in several music videos of her label mates, including Jun. K's "No Love", Got7's "Girls Girls Girls" and miss A's "Only You." She also made a cameo appearance in the second episode of KBS2's 2012 Korean drama Dream High 2. In 2017, she, along with Nichkhun, starred in the music video of Jun. K's "Your Wedding". Yoo Jeong-yeon was born as Yoo Kyung-wan on November 1, 1996 (age 20) in Suwon, South Korea. She is the younger sister of actress Gong Seung-yeon. As a child, she was often teased because Kyung-wan sounded like a boy's name. She legally changed her name to Jeong-yeon when she was in the third grade. She joined the company after passing the JYP Entertainment's 6th Open Audition on March 1, 2010. Like Nayeon, Jihyo and Sana, she was originally set to debut in a group called 6mix. In 2014, she appeared with Nayeon in the music video of Got7's "Girls Girls Girls" and, in 2015, appeared in miss A's "Only You" music video. She and her sister were the hosts of Inkigayo from July 3, 2016 to January 22, 2017. Momo Hirai, known mononymously as Momo, was born on November 9, 1996 (age 20) in Kyōtanabe, Kyoto, Japan.She is the main dancer of Twice. Momo started dancing at a very young age and decided to become a singer because of Amuro Namie and got into K-pop after watching Rain and Lee Hyori. She used to be a trainee at Step Out Dance Studio and was scouted by JYP Entertainment after they saw a dance video of her and her older sister. She was told to audition with her sister on April 13, 2012, though she was the only one who made it in. In 2014, she appeared in the music video of Got7's "Stop Stop It" and the Japanese MV of Junho's "Feel". In the following year, she appeared in the music videos of Wooyoung's "R.O.S.E" and miss A's "Only You." She is the only eliminated member of the survival show Sixteen to be brought back to debut as a member of Twice. In fall 2016, Kim Hee-chul and Min Kyung-hoon released a digital single, "Sweet Dream", under SM Entertainment, with the music video starring Momo and the rest of the Knowing Bros cast. Sana Minatozaki, known mononymously as Sana, was born on December 29, 1996 (age 20) in Tennōji-ku, Osaka, Japan. Sana attended EXPG (Exile Professional Gym) Osaka branch, a dance and vocal studio where many Japanese idols trained including some members of E-girls, Generations and The Rampage, from 2009 to early 2012. She first got interested in K-pop because of Girls' Generation's and KARA's rising popularity in Japan. In her last year of middle school, she was scouted by JYP Entertainment on the street and auditioned on April 13, 2012. In 2014, she appeared in the music video of Got7's "A" and Junho's "Feel". Park Ji-hyo was born as Park Ji-soo on February 1, 1997 (age 20) in Guri, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. She is the leader and main vocalist of the group. When Jihyo was a third grader, she participated in a contest on Junior Naver for a child role. After she won second place, she was scouted by JYP Entertainment. She officially joined the company on July 15, 2005, and was a trainee for over 10 years. Jihyo was known mostly pre-debut as the face of Innisfree's teen line "TN" with boy band Boyfriend and later with future group mate Nayeon. She was set to debut in the girl group 6mix along with future group mate Nayeon, Jeongyeon and Sana, prior to competing on Sixteen. She also appeared in the music video of miss A's "Only You". She legally changed her name from Ji-soo to Ji-hyo before Sixteen. Jihyo collaborated with Apink's Jung Eun-ji and Ben for the part 1 of Inkigayo's special project called "Inkigayo Music Crush". Their ballad song titled "The Reason I Got Pretty" was released on November 6, 2016 as a digital single.Mina Myoui known mononymously as Mina , was born on March 24, 1997 (age 19) in San Antonio, Texas, and moved to Kobe, Japan, when she was a toddler. She studied ballet for eleven years before joining Urizip dance school for more modern dance training. In 2013, she was scouted by a JYP Entertainment staff member while shopping with her mother and was invited to join JYP Entertainment Global. She auditioned in a JYP audition in Japan and joined the trainee program in South Korea on January 2, 2014. In 2014–2015, she appeared in the music videos of Got7's "Stop Stop It", Junho's "Feel", Wooyoung's "R.O.S.E", and Miss A's "Only You". Kim Da-hyun was born on May 28, 1998 (age 18) in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Dahyun first gained attention in sixth grade after a video of her at church performing a "head-banging, wing-flapping, and thoroughly irrepressible dance" to Hillsong's "The Power of Your Love" went viral on YouTube in 2011 and earned her the moniker "Eagle Dance Church Sister." In middle school, she performed a solo in a youth dance festival and was scouted by JYP Entertainment. She auditioned for the company on July 7, 2012, and officially became a trainee. She later appeared in the music video of Got7's "Stop Stop It" and Wooyoung's "R.O.S.E". She graduated from Hanlim Multi Art School in February 2017. Son Chae-young was born on April 23, 1999 (age 17) in Seoul, South Korea. Chaeyoung attended a dance academy for about a year when she was a sixth grader. She joined the company after passing the audition on June 6, 2012. Prior to Sixteen, she appeared in the music video of Got7's "Stop Stop It" and miss A's "Only You". She is currently attending Hanlim Multi Art School as a 10th grader majoring in practical music. Chou Tzu-yu, known mononymously as Tzuyu, was born on June 14, 1999 (age 17) in Tainan, Taiwan. Tzuyu was discovered by entertainment scouts at the MUSE Performing Arts Workshop in Tainan in 2012, and went to South Korea on November 15 to start her training. She appeared in the music videos of Got7's "Stop Stop It" and Miss A's "Only You" before joining Sixteen. She is one of the two members added to the final line-up of Twice in the finale, along with Momo. She is currently a freshman at Hanlim Multi Art School after passing her exam in Taiwan to certify her middle school education. So now you know about the members from Twice.
