The golden window of opportunity - whether it’s in my career, relationships, or friendships, I’m always reminded that I should tell the Universe “yes” more often!  The night I met my soul mate, I was on a journey to say “yes” to the opportunities to just live, and I accepted an invitation to go to a New Year’s party that was totally different than the original plan.  I wanted to make this little piece to remind myself, and others, that the golden window of opportunity is just a “yes” away!  The vines wrapping around symbolize that there is security in the adventure, if you just reach out and grab it.

I repurposed a glass votive candle holder that was originally gold with a square, ornately geometric pattern printed on the interior, glowing through with a flame inside.  I rolled out a slab of clay then wrapped it firmly on the glass base.  Once partially  dry, I then carved out the detail of the grain of the wood and the “knots”.  Using slurry, I then added the details of the door and the wrapping vines around the back and side.  Layering hammered bronze and copper spray paint, I cover the outside, all but the “window”.  Spraying a copper finish on the interior, I then finished off the whole piece with a clear enamel coating.

One of my oldest friends asked me to be a part of their wedding a couple years back, and of course I volunteered to do the flowers!  (For those of you that don’t know, I worked with top floral designers for several years back in the day.)  So I scoured thrift shop shelves to find an eclectic collection of bud vases for the reception (long tables, small arrangements scattered down the center with votive candles).  

After the event, I had quite a number of vases and votive holders left over.  I chose to keep and re-purpose them as this was about the same time I came across the article that discussed how inundated non-profits become with donations that don’t sell.  Since I had never been very good at the wheel when I threw mud, I decided to tackle something whimsical using the basic form of the smaller bud vases.

So, first I did some research on air dry clay, and found that DAS was the brand that would work best for me.  I like the texture, and it had fairly good reviews.  I rolled out a flat sheet of clay polymer, then wrapped it squarely around the sanded surface of the glass.  After allowing to cure for just the right amount of time (you want it just starting to shrink and harden against the surface), I then used some small ballpoint tools to carve out the grain of the “wood” and add “knots”.  I then used slurry to attach the little details (rocks, flowers, vines, grasses, the door, etc.).  After allowing it to cure for a day or two, I then used spray paint to cover the surface of both the interior (rose gold/copper) and exterior (bronze & copper) of the sculpture.  Before calling it done, I added a layer of clear enamel coating to further protect it.

Measures about 4″ around and stands about 4″ tall.  Weighs under a pound.
