All this talk and worry about taking vaccines - after taking this Vaccin 1.0, made and distributed by Brouwerij Alvinne, I didn’t experience any negative side effects at all. Actually its refreshing fruity lactic dry-hopped character left me feeling quite fine & dandy. I’m now looking forward to getting another one in 3 weeks. Mano Negra Chili Stout by Alvinne in Belgium (@brouwerijalvinne ). It exploded out of the bottle then immediately went flat in the glass. A stout aged in Bordeaux barrels, it's picked up some oak and Bordeaux complexity and some sourness. No hint of chili flavour, but there is a pleasant chili bite, especially in the aftertaste. A third king, Melchior, past through Balen today. He didn’t seem to be in much of a hurry, as if he was just enjoying the sweet caramel fruity buzz of life, this while also being a bit amber toasted. Today two kings journeyed through Balen, of all places. First to wander by was a solid bitter Old World fruity Gaspar, and then about an hour later a dark & holiday spicy Balthazar happened by. Both very nice; they say all good things come in 3’s, but I guess I can’t complain and need to be patient. Anyway, all this walking royalty makes me wonder what’s going on... According to the label I could easily have kept this Dark Horse Reserva Vintage 2014 from De Struise Brouwers in my cellar for 10 years, but I only made it to 2.5 years. Oh well, I’m glad I didn’t. 4 years in Bordeaux barrels certainly did give this beer stale woody tannins, but along side the tart basalmico character, the tart fruits were nice and fresh, just pluck albeit a little too early. My day was spent dealing with the results of yesterday’s thundershowers... getting all our tent contents dry (these days my daughter and I have been sleeping in our tent set up in the back yard), pond pump shorted out (rainwater got where in had never gone before), ... Anyway, I’ve always been a fan of Brasserie Minne’s annual ‘wood’ beers, this time their Woody Wood, with 5% lambic from Gueuzerie Tilquin nicely rounding off all the rough edges. Later I pulled out this Naakte Elf, a collab between Brouwerij Alvinne and Nøgne Ø, and what an interesting surprise it was - not interesting like an experimental beer I’m glad to have tried but am also glad it was limited to 33 cl’s; no, interesting like this is why I love beer and a pity it wasn’t a 75 cL bottle. ... a Nordic raw beer with juniper infused water, smoked malt and lingonberries. I got my hands on this Alvinne glass just in time to get refreshed with their beers on one of the warmest tropical summer days recorded in Belgium history... Today I decided to get vaccinated 3x’s Alvinne style; perhaps most people think these beers are vaccinations against COVID-19, which concerning the times makes all sense in the world, but I believe their purposes lie elsewhere. Vaccin 2.0 - aka Flower Sour - is a vaccine against boredom; Vaccin 2.5 - aka Blond Session Sour - is a vaccine against tropical hot sunny summer afternoons; and Vaccin 3.0 - aka Ice Cream Sour - is simply a vaccine against the usual.
