The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) transformed chess from a simple two-player board game to a technological investigation into the significance of each and every move. AI gives computer chess programs vast amounts of data, which they then use to evaluate the game, determine the best moves to make and create a solid strategy far faster than any human could.
In many ways, computer chess has become a vehicle for learning more about AI. Thanks to computer chess programs and research, it’s possible to create efficient algorithms that make accurate decisions and have access to in-depth information that would take humans far longer to memorise. Those with specialised knowledge of AI – like Jonathan De Vita, who holds a BSc in computer science – understand the significance of such breakthroughs.
Throughout history, human beings have been developing technology that can do all the things we can. In some domains, like chess, machines have benefitted from almost a century of training. In the 1940s, mathematician Alan Turing created a computer-based chess algorithm for a test game. Although Turing’s program lost, it provided a significant basis for future developments in computer chess.
In 1951, Dietrich Prinz successfully created the first limited computer-run chess program. Six years later, Alex Bernstein’s computer chess program became the first to play an entire game. Programmers continued to refine computer chess over the following decades, from microcomputers to online gaming to real-life tournaments. In 1996, IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer defeated World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov in a multi-game match.
Breakthroughs in the development of AI made all of this possible. Machines can simulate human intelligence to perform the same tasks as people do, but on a much larger and faster scale. They innovate new tactics and posit different ways of resolving setbacks. Before AI, a human chess player would likely have lost against a highly skilled chess genius like Kasparov.
