I came up with a Mystic Messenger AU!
I have no idea if this already exists lol
It's sort of a role-swap for the characters, but based on mixing the duos/trios, mostly (but not completely) based on story grouping.
Here's the list of who is swapped with who:
MC swapped with Rika
Jumin swapped with Seven
V swapped with Saeran
Yoosung swapped with Zen
Jaehee swapped with Vanderwood
It's still an AU-in-progress, so it still needs some things fleshed-out, but here's some random things I thought about for each character:
Yoosung:
- a new, young voice actor
- still very cute
- has voiced characters in (usually indie) videogames primarily
- wants to work on bigger games, but spends too much time gaming when he should be applying for bigger voice acting positions
Zen:
- college student who changed his major several times and failed a bunch of classes, but still doing his best
- still a narcissist
- working several jobs to pay for his tuition because he refuses to accept financial help, wanting to earn it on his own
- loves musicals!! (he'll one day realize his dream to be a musical actor, but he has yet to realize...)
Vanderwood:
- works for CEO-in-line, Saeyoung Choi, as his assistant (and maid)
- constantly reminds Seven to take his job seriously
- is very confused why Seven has so much money yet doesn't take care of his health (Seven still primarily eats honey buddha chips)
- annoyed when Saeyoung calls them his housemaid when clearly they're his assistant
Jaehee:
- secret agent (and catsitter for Jumin)
- overworked by the agency AND Jumin and needs a break
- cat hair everywhere, send help
- has to beg Jumin not to involve cats into his or their missions
- still loves musicals! (not a fan of Zen as an actor tho since he's not an actor yet)
- once sat next to Zen during a theatre showing, but never kept in contact (was in awe from his beauty, but knew she needed to keep her distance due to agency work)
Jumin:
- hacker and secret agent
- still has Elizabeth the 3rd, and claims that her wisdom has helped him crack many codes and solved many missions
- great at his job otherwise
- still has the same personality as before, except hacker
Seven:
- CEO-in-line who works hard but also loves mischief!
- definitely has produced some hilarious marketing campaigns
- may or may not have made some secret loophole scams to snatch more money for his babies (his cars)
- still wants to play with Elly
- can actually afford to go to the moon
V:
- used to be best friends with Jumin before joining Gold Eye under MC
- loves art, but doesn't have enough time to make any due to hacking and cult shenanigans
- instead of a garden, Gold Eye has an art gallery where V likes to spend his time
- will do anything for MC, even learning to hack and worshipping her every move
Saeran:
- leader of MC's Fundraising Association (MCFA)
- specializes in floral photography and gardening
- lives with his brother in a penthouse
- has a large garden in their backyard with all sorts of flowers and plants
- he and Saeyoung still grew up with that abusive mother, but, eventually they learned their dad (who isn't the prime minister in this) was rich, so they escaped, found him, and convinced him to let them live with him
- loves MC and has been desperate to find her after she vanished
Rika:
- no, she is not getting the option to date like in the game; she's just there trying to fix everything and make everyone happy
- never hosted a party in her life, but is determined to try
- never dated V
- struggles with mental illness and trauma, but is actively seeking therapy and is improving
- joined MCFA after MC left (Yoosung recognized her immediately, but everyone else does not know her)
MC:
- cult leader of Gold Eye
- obsessed with bringing MCFA into her cult as her harem
- looooooves bad endings
- didn't fake her own death, but did mysteriously cut contact one day and took V with her
- the true mastermind in all this
EVERYTHING IN THIS LIST IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE!! I just thought this would be a fun AU concept idea lol
I made this while sleep deprived lol
I'm gonna go to sleep now

Can you do MC rejecting Seven's proposal because she loves Jumin (after all he does on the Secret Endings who could blame her?) So no photo? How would that reunion go?
Oop more angst >_<
I’ve realized I really like writing this sort of stuff pfttt

Anyway I’ll shut up now lmao, enjoy it.
Rejection (idk can’t write titles lmao, Seven x MC angst):
It was a beautiful night. Right now you were on a very beautiful mountain, looking up at the stars with Saeyoung.
That day he had dragged you to his car and brought you some place really far away. Saeran decided to stay at home so that you two could have some alone time. Saeyoung saw you feeling a bit down, so as he drove he made sure to crack as many jokes as he could, and to put on your favorite music.
But he didn’t notice if you felt better or not, since he kept one hand in his pocket, and every once in a while he would check that whatever he had was still there. He was pretty nervous.
You both arrived at this beautiful place at about 6pm, and you saw that there was a picnic laid out for the both of you. You smiled dryly, as Saeyoung helped sitting you down.
Everything looked beautiful. Saeyoung had prepared the picnic to be looking out to the whole city, and he had adorned some of the trees around with some cute lights. Around you were pictures, notes and things he had made for you. You took the album that was beside you and started going through it, while Saeyoung took some wine glasses and poured some Dr. Pepper in them.
“And here’s a glass to the most beautiful mademoiselle ever. One glass of Dr. Pepper and a bag of Honey Buddha Chips! Tonight we’re dining like royality!” He jokingly said, as he handed over the glass and bag of chips to you, and then he sat down beside you, looking up at the stars.
“Thanks...Saeyoung. Um...what’s the occasion? Did I miss something?” You asked.
Saeyoung laughed and took a sip from his glass, then he put a finger up to his lips. “It’s secret! You won’t find out until a bit later! For now please enjoy the view and eat to your hearts content!”
You ate very little. Saeyoung was happily chatting to you, but you weren’t listening to what he was saying. That was until you noticed he went quiet and that it had become quite dark, since the little lightbulbs he had hanging around suddenly were turned off, leaving you with only the light of the stars.
“Y/N. Actually, I...umm, I brought you here because...well. It’s just, you’ve changed my life. You made me realize so many things, you helped me find my brother, you helped me be happy again! I owe you so much. And well, now since everything is fine, the RFA is all together, and Saeran has recovered. I thought that now...it might be time to take it to the next step. Y/N. I love you so much. And I know that, we’ve been through so much, I know I can be a lot, but you’ve been with me the whole time. Which is why...I want to ask you....” Saeyoung got on one knee and looked at you, tears starting to form in his eyes and a big smile on his face.
“Y/N, you’re the love of my life. You’re my everything and I, I want to spend the rest of my days with you. Y/N L/N, will you do me the honor, of becoming my wife?” He asked.
You gasped. No. No no no, was he really proposing to you?
You gulped and looked somewhere else, somewhere that wasn’t Saeyoung and you felt your chest tightening.
Saeyoung’s smile slowly faded and he moved close to you.
“Y-Y/N? Is...is everything alright?” He asked in a small voice. Then he ran a hand through his hair and bit his lip.
“I’m sorry Y/N, was it too soon? If you don’t want to get married yet it’s ok, I’m sorry, I knew I should’ve waited a bit more! Damn, I’m so dumb I-”
“Saeyoung.” You sniffed. Saeyoung slowly looked at you. Shit, did he fuck up? Goddamit, stupid Saeyoung you should have waited why didn’t you wait?!
You both sat in silence, the light of the stars gone since clouds had started to cover them all.
Then you looked at Saeyoung and took a deep breath. “I’m sorry Saeyoung. I really am. I just...I can’t...get married to you.”
Huh?
“W-what do you mean Y/N? D-did I do something? I’m sorry if I did, I really am!”
You shook your head.
So you weren’t mad at him? He didn’t understand, what was the problem?
“Saeyoung...listen. You are a wonderful person. You’re amazing, you care so much for your brother, for your friend. But...I can’t do it anymore. Ever since, well. The whole cult ordeal, everything has changed. At first it was fine but...you would still pull away from me sometimes. And I tried and tried, but whenever you were feeling down you just ignored me, and made feel so bad. I get that you’re sad, I know we all have bad days but...I can’t take it anymore, I just can’t.” You started sobbing, and Saeyoung looked at you, his face filled with guilt and sadness. Then he tried to grab your hand.
“Listen Y/N, if it’s because of that I promise that I can change, I promise I won’t-”
You pulled away and stood up.
“It’s not that Saeyoung! I just, agh. I-I just...I think I’ve fallen out of love with you. And I am so sorry, I really am, you’re wonderful and you’re so sweet, but I think we’re...we’re not right for each other. I’m sorry.” You yelled.
The both of you kept quiet, and stood in your places even when droplets started falling down.
Saeyoung hugged his knees and looked forward, a cold expression on his face.
“Saeyoung....I’m sorry. I confused my feelings for you, and you ended up getting hurt, and it’s all my fault, alright? So please don’t blame yourself.”
Silence.
Then Saeyoung gave a dry laugh and looked up to the sky.
“Wow. I mean, I guess it makes sense. All this time...you were acting so different. I thought you were angry at me, so I tried to do anything I could to make you smile again. Honestly it is my fault for trying to delay the inevitable. I tried to ignore the feeling that you were pulling away from me, and I tried to make everything better. But I still managed to screw it up.”
You bit your lip and looked at the ground, then Saeyoung looked up at you.
“You know, the first thing I noticed was at this years party. Remeber? You know, before...whenever you were around me everyone in the RFA said that you looked happier, as if you were glowing. Everytime you looked at me you’d have this spark in your eye...and I felt so special, so happy that that one spark, that expression you made, was only because of me. But you stopped. And that night, at the RFA party, I saw you talking with Jumin. And you were looking at him...the way you looked at me. That’s how I realized...but I just...I didn’t want to let you go. I’m sorry Y/N. I’m sorry that you had to deal with all these feelings because of me.”
Saeyoung forced a smile, as his tears mixed with the droplets falling down.
You were both completely drenched now. Saeyoung slowly stood up and raised his arm in front of him.
“No hard feelings, ok? You can go and be with Jumin. I won’t stop you. Thanks, for everything Y/N. Really.” He said.
You slowly shook his hand, and pulled him into a gentle hug.
“Thank you Saeyoung.”
When he pulled away he asked if you wanted a drive home, well, to his home now, to see if you wanted to pick up any stuff, but you refused telling him that you had moved everything back to Rika’s place a week before.
He drove you over to your apartment, and he didn’t seem any different. Saeyoung put on some music, and even joked around for a bit.
When he finally dropped you off, you thanked him once again.
“No problemo! Good luck with Cat Mom! Really! I’m sure he’ll be hard to pin down, but...I’m sure he’ll fall for you in no time.” He smiled.
You blushed and waved goodbye, and Saeyoung watched as you went inside the building.
All the way home he kept driving with a smile on his face. He didn’t think, he didn’t cry. He was quiet.
He came home and opened the door, then he made his way to the kitchen, where he found his brother.
“Hey you two, congrats! Here’s the stupid cake, seriously, I can’t believe it took so long for the idiot to propose, it’s great that he finally stopped being a pussy.” Saeran said sarcastically, but he still looked happy as he carried the cake. But he stopped when he saw his brother standing in the doorway, alone.
“Saeyoung? Where the hell is Y/N? Don’t tell me you forgot her in the mountain like you did with Yoosung the last time?”
No response.
Now Saeran was a bit worried. He placed the cake on the counter and walked over to his brother, who was still smiling and standing on the doorway without saying a word.
“Saeyoung...what the hell happened?”
Saeyoung just smiled, and Saeran was getting impatient.
“Hey! I’m talking to you!! What the fuck happened back there, why isn’t Y/N with you? Don’t tell me, did the two of you have a fight?! Saeyoung what did-”
Saeran stopped as Saeyoung quickly wrapped his arms around him, tightly. Saeran squirmed, and started yelling at his brother, telling him to let go, but then he saw Saeyoung start shaking, and he suddenly heard sobs.
“Saeyoung....?”
He grabbed Saeran even tighter and kept sobbing. Saeran he...he didn’t know what to do. Every single time, Saeyoung had been the one comforting him, whenever he felt sad or anxious.
But this time...Saeyoung was leaning on him.
Saeran awkwardly put his arms around Saeyoung and hugged his brother tight.
That night, Saeran stood all the time by his brother’s side.
He waited until Saeyoung felt comfortable enough to tell him what had happened.
When he heard that you rejected him...and that you broke up. Saeran...felt conflicted.
You were a close friend of his. He loved you so much. But you...you had hurt his brother deeply. He knew that you couldn’t control how you felt but...it still made him mad.
Saeyoung wasn’t in the RFA chatroom for months. Saeran would be the one to sometimes log in to reassure the other members that he was alrighhr, Saeran was taking care of him.
It took him so long to get over you. And when he was finally feeling better you and Jumin announced that you were pregnant, and that you were getting married soon.
Saeyoung acted as if it was fine. Around the RFA he was all smiles and jokes, he even offered to be the baby’s godfather.
Saeran was the only one who knew that at night Saeyoung would close himself off in his room, and that he wouldn’t come out.
It was hard. After all Saeyoung always thought he’d be the one being with you, the one to start a family and to take you to different places, instead of Jumin.
Sometimes it got so bad that he...well.
Saeran had to stop him from harming himself multiple times. Saeyoung was so depressed, and since Saeran was better he felt as if no one really needed him anymore.
Saeran will always be there for him though, and he began acting more caring to Saeyoung, he got less mad, and he even took him to travel to different places.
Even though it may take so long, Saeran will work hard so his brother can find happiness again.
A few years later Saeyoung was back to his normal self. Though it sometimes hurt to remeber the times he spent with you, he didn’t resent you.
All that mattered to him, was that you were happy.
Core Zen Scriptures (what the Zen masters studied)
Zen is said to be based on a "special transmission outside scriptures" which "did not stand upon words", a Zen-tradition rich in doctrinal and textual battleground heavily influenced by the Lankavatara Sutra, the Diamond Sutra, the Vimalakirti Sutra, the Avatamsaka Sutra, and the Lotus Sutra.
Zen is also rich in literature generated by esteemed practitioners such as the Platform Sutra by Huineng, the Transmission of the Lamp, Recorded sayings of Zen Masters, and of course the Koan collection.
Japanese Zen, a subset of Ch’an, is further influenced by Dogen's Shōbōgenzō and Zenshū Shiburoku, which takes a radical departure from Chinese Ch’an in becoming an entirely new religious sect.
Decoding Zen
It has to be stated that the study of Zen is religious, in which religion is defined as the ‘attunement to the spiritual’. The statement that Zen is "special transmission outside scriptures" is code for this attunement, this spiritual awakening, the opening of the 'dharma eye' or enlightenment.
It does not take much reading, either of the core scriptures or that of the Recorded sayings of Zen masters, to see the ‘finger pointing to the moon’ in which the finger is the message of spiritual attunement and the moon is the fully awakened spiritual being in attunement.
Secular Zen
There is a worldly-way view of Zen that only classifies the practices of Zen training and the statements of the Zen Masters as psychological therapy and conditioning-training (cults) in which the student takes on a mind-state of non-attachment that has been called a dissociative disorder.
Wordily-way Zen tends to define compassion as ‘your own individual actions to cease suffering in the worldly-ways around you’, and takes on a more militant political views of Social Justice, Environmental Justice, and Economic Justice.
Zen Tradition (Transmission of mind)
The Zen tradition has nothing to do with Asian cultural norms or style, or the cultures of temple life found in various countries. What we are talking about is the ‘lighting of the lamp’ from mind-to-mind, that is done in a master/disciple style of relationship. Though Huneng, the sixth patriarch of Zen, was said to have his mind awakened as a young boy just by hearing a monk recite the Diamond Sutra in the marketplace, he still sought out the fifth patriarch of Zen, banging on his door and telling him “I want to be a Buddha’. In this, the Mind-to-mind seal is validated and passed on.
This Zen tradition can be formal or informal, a Zen disciple can have one or many teachers. Some can read manuscripts for years before the notion of seeking validation, the Mind Seal, come to play and others have it thrust upon them, as in the case of Samuel L. Lewis. In some cases as in Hakuin, the mind seal is self-evident and validated by those who come to test him.
Zen in Modernity
Mumonkan number 14: Nansen kills the cat
Once the monks of the Western and Eastern Halls were arguing about a cat. Nansen, holding up the cat, said, “You monks! If you can say a word of Zen, I will spare the cat. Otherwise I will kill it.” No one could answer, so Nansen cut the cat in two. That evening, when Joshu returned, Nansen told him of the incident. Joshu thereupon took off his sandal, put it on his head, and walked off. Nansen said, “If you had been there, the cat would have been saved!”
So the story is anecdotal fiction, no cat was actually killed. The case above is about superstitions, in that the monks argued about superstitions and spurious beliefs, and when Nansen countered them on their superstitious beliefs in asking if any of them could say a word of Zen (meaning do they understand or even have studied), the monks could not reply. Joshu later when told of the incident does an odd thing: putting the sandal on ones head is considered disrespectful in Asian and middle-eastern cultures. A sandal is a dirty thing, yet why would Joshu imply that ‘he is a dirty thing?’
Case stories are meant to push the reader beyond conceptual formulaic thinking, to use ones Intuitiveness to ‘know the answer’ without ‘thinking the answer’, and this is actually the Zen practice that the Zen masters hope to teach.
Zen students pick up all kinds of beliefs and ideas, and will believe and practice most anything! Many manuscripts have been written by a great many people who THINK they know what Zen is, yet it is all based in worldly-ways – cats in the Buddha hall! In the end, such books often end up in the rubbish heap destine for obscurity and oblivion.
Zen today is really no different than it was in the days of Joshu. Same problems, same types of students, same issues. Don’t think that you cannot know Zen, or that there are no Zen masters today, for they are certainly out there, just perhaps not where you expect them to be!
The word “auction” derives from the Latin word “auctuc” which means “increasing”
17th century and the rise of candle auctions (a candle was lit at the beginning of the auction and the end was determined when the candle dies out. This ensures the ambiguity of when the last bid will be and adds to the anticipation)
“it's that smaller is simpler, and that tiny makes us feel powerful. In an age with so much going on, the ability to minimize anything and everything is optimal.”
Downsizing everything means less maintenance and time taking care of the things we own, more efficiency in the things we do
We are able to have control over tiny things
We’re able to consume and own tiny things in abundance, from objects to even snack-sized food products - they might be more expensive but they’re doing their job.
The value of miniatures doesn’t seem to come from the physical object, its more about their use/function - what they give to the consumer - and less about their size.
The dollhouses are a copy and resemblance of the actual homes the owners lived in
Miniatures were made using the material they are representing (ex. Miniature of china vases actually being made in china)
Influx of wealth from trade (merchant class was created) which led to displays of wealth (miniatures) that brings status
Tied to women, more like collectors pieces rather than toys
Mostly tied to a marriage gift
Almost a piece of furniture with legs and doors to be seen at eye level
Women could take ownership of it, work with craftsmen, commission pieces
Highest symbol of wealth - silver, porcelain, paintings, pen and ink drawings
(Miniature’s value as religious artefacts)
Their value can be found in more religious inclinations, through the Egyptian figures (of servants and cats) which were thought to serve the pharaohs in the afterlife, voodoo puppets using black magic to inflict harm, household gods (eg. roman, buddhist) which depicted the gods which they worshipped. This also extends to currently practiced religions using them as symbols such as nativity scenes, crosses, miniature bibles, Buddha, and jade.
Does not hold as much value by themselves but is worth more due to their use in certain games such as Warhammer or DnD. These miniatures act as player pieces to control in the game and are sold at relatively high prices for these small figures, mainly due to use in the games and branding.
One thing that means is just. Getting rid of a lot of shit because I don’t want to move it. I’m going to be doing a lot of destashing, but this post is specifically about books. These are just the books on my bookshelf; I’m sure I will find many more by the time I’m done, and that’ll be in part 2.
I’ll be donating at least 25% and using the rest for moving expenses. I’m thinking Immigration Equality, the Hispanic Federation, or Dysautonomia International for the donation? But I’m open to suggestions.
Anyway, I didn’t want to futz around with how much to charge for the books, so let’s just say $5 for the paperbacks, $10 for the hardbacks, plus shipping. (Let’s say like $3.50 a book for shipping, unless we’re dealing in a lot of hardbacks or something. I think that’s about right for media mail + mailer? If you’re getting a ton of books or you’re outside the US, we’ll talk.)
Feel free to haggle or ask questions about edition, condition, translation, whatever.
I loved some of these books, I hated some of these books. Some were for class, some for pleasure, some gifts from people who did not know me very well. All of them are taking up a lot of room.

His favorite game LOLOL stands for League of Loneliness of Life, this is a parody to an online PC game League of Legends (shortened as LOL).
Despite of his addiction to gaming, Yoosung is actually smart enough to get a scholarship at his school; to the point that Jumin personally offered him an internship at his company.
In one of the chattoons on Cheritz’s dedicated page, Zen calls Yoosung YS.
The university that Yoosung attends, SKY National University, is a possible reference to the three most prestigious universities in South Korea (Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University). These three universities are often commonly known as the SKY Universities.
He, like Seven, enjoys Honey Buddha Chips. He savors one bag of chips for weeks, because they’re so rare.
The one who put the black star (★) behind Yoosung’s username in the RFA Messenger is Seven.
In Zen’s route, Yoosung states that his mother is a housewife, his father works for the government, and his sister wants to be a teacher. He describes them as a normal family.
In one of his phone calls in Seven’s route, Yoosung admitted that he has small crush on MC, but after realizing another member of the RFA loves them much more, he’s looking forward to other interests.
According to the Orientation Guide Book:
He adopted the cat who was found by Jumin outside his house during the events prior to the party. In exchange, Jumin would convince V one more time to get his eye treated and sent security guards to Rika’s apartment.
He has a very low alcohol tolerance. [1]
In Deep Story, during a call with Yoosung, he has mentioned about him being an M, which stands for masochist. This is also referenced many times by Yoosung himself (mostly in response to his friends’ ribbing), who remains blissfully unaware of what it means. [2]
He can cook well but has trouble with making Chinese food. [3]
Yoosung loves romance movies and dislikes horror movies, seeing as they make him uncomfortable. [4]
He has once broken the fourth wall. In his status he said “Seven, I feel like there is a bug in this game.” [5]
His shoe size is 240. (EU: 38, US: 6, UK:5)
It’s his 3rd time to attend the RFA party in the Original Story, according to Jumin. [6]
In an outgoing call, he mentions he has abs although he admits it’s not photogenic like Zen. [7]
Yoosung’s Bad Story Ending 1 is the longest of all bad endings. It consists of 5 chat rooms, 2 visual novels, 4 outgoing calls, and 3 incoming calls. It starts from 17:00 until 23:30.
In an outgoing call in Jaehee’s route, Yoosung has stated that he liked the idea of being treated like a maid, ordered around, and insulted some times; implying he is a masochist. [8]

His LOLOL character seems to be based on the League of Legends character Taric, most notably his ‘Armour of the fifth age’ character skin pre-redesign

10 Fun Facts About Barbara Steele by Kimberly Lindbergs
Barbara Steele became a cult film icon thanks to her memorable roles in a number of low-budget horror movies, but her filmography also includes critically acclaimed art films and interesting British dramas. FilmStruck and Criterion Channel subscribers can currently stream four of Steele’s best movies and when viewed together they become a wonderful, rowdy and wild introduction to one of my favorite actresses and her small but impressive body of work.
I suggest kick-starting your viewing party with Basil Dearden’s neo-noir crime drama SAPPHIRE (’56), which includes Barbara Steele in one of earliest and briefest screen appearances playing a young college student whose friend has been brutally murdered. Follow that with Mario Bava’s Gothic horror classic BLACK SUNDAY (‘60) starring Steele in the dual role of Asa Vadja, a 200-year-old Moldavian Princess accused of practicing witchcraft and vampirism, and Katia, her much younger and gentle-hearted ancestor. The third film I recommend is Fellini’s autobiographical 8 ½ (’63) where you can see Steele dancing her way into cinema history and last but not least, finish with Volker Schlöndorff’s anti-fascist creed YOUNG TORLESS (’66). In the final film, Steele portrays a seductive prostitute who propositions students at a boy’s boarding school.
Her transgressive filmography isn’t for the timid or easily shocked, but adventurous audiences will find it especially rewarding. Unfortunately, Steele’s roles were often brief, ephemeral moments that haunt her fans, and you’re left wondering why she wasn’t given more screen time or additional opportunities to showcase her talents.
To accompany Steele’s films, I thought I’d compile a list of fun facts about the actress to spark your interest and spur your imagination.
Barbara Steele was born on December 29, 1938 and raised in the British seaport town of Birkenhead near Liverpool. Her parents encouraged her artistic pursuits and she studied dance, piano and acting at a young age but she was especially fond of the visual arts and longed to become a professional painter. A few other well-known Birkenhead residents include the Academy Award-winning actress Glenda Jackson (WOMEN IN LOVE [’69], THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN [’73], HOPSCOTCH [’80]) and Targon Egerton, the 28-year-old star of KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE (’15) and KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE (’18).
Her interest in the visual arts and antiques drove Steele to study painting at the Chelsea College of Arts in London and in Paris at the Sorbonne. During this period, she was reportedly befriended and seduced by future film director Donald Cammell (PERFORMANCE [’70], DEMON SEED [’77], WHITE OF THE EYE [’87]). Steele has told interviewers that she “wanted to be Picasso” but fate had other plans for the aspiring artist.
To make money while she was an art student, Steele sold copper jewelry and antique prints from a pushcart. During weekends, she could be found peddling her wares to passersby on London’s Portobello Road where she supposedly earned a reputation as a “shrewd dealer.”
Steele was persuaded to become an actress after she was spotted by a director while painting sets for a stage production of Bell, Book and Candle in Glasgow, Scotland. The director was so taken by Steele’s otherworldly beauty that he encouraged her to audition for the role of Gillian the witch after the star of the play fell ill. The character of Gillian was made famous by Kim Novak who appeared in the film adaptation, but Steele would eventually become a star in her own right after playing another witch; the black-hearted Asa Vajda in Mario Bava’s Gothic horror classic BLACK SUNDAY.
After a brief career on stage and some modeling jobs, Barbara Steele was discovered by talent agents from Rank Organisation. They signed her on the spot but the British studio didn’t seem to know what to do with the budding actress so they sold her contract to 20th Century Fox. In Hollywood, Steele was put through a torturous star-making routine that involved dying her dark locks blond and pinning her ears. When it was over she was cast alongside Elvis Presley in FLAMING STAR (’60) but after some heated disagreements with costumers and director Don Siegel, Steele reportedly stormed off the set. Soon afterward the historic 1960 Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes shut Hollywood down and during the interim Steele decided to return to Europe.
According to Steele, Mario Bava first spotted the actress in a photoshoot she did for a 1958 issue of Life and was struck by her saturnine beauty. Later, while pursuing a stack of acting resumes from the William Morris Agency, he decided to cast the saucer-eyed ingénue in BLACK SUNDAY, a role that made her a horror icon and earned her the nickname “Queen of all Screams.” .
Two of Barbara Steele’s most famous paramours were actors Anthony Quinn and Peter O’Toole. Steele’s affair with Quinn is rumored to have lasted for years and occurred while he was married to Katherine DeMille, the daughter of Cecil B. DeMille. Steele’s romantic fling with O’Toole was short-lived but passionate and roused the attention of the paparazzi who relentlessly pursued the couple in Italy. The situation reached a fever pitch in 1964 leading to a violent altercation between O’Toole and a photographer who had momentarily blinded Steele with his camera's flash. Steele and O’Toole were both subsequently arrested and questioned for hours by the Italian police but they were eventually let go. Afterward, the authorities attempted to press assault charges against O’Toole but he managed to avoid arrest with the assistance of his stunt double.
During the span of her career Steele collaborated with many talented directors besides Mario Bava such as Basil Dearden, Roger Corman, Riccardo Freda, Antonio Margheriti, Michael Reeves, Volker Schlöndorff, Louis Malle, Jonathan Demme and David Cronenberg. Despite the impressive scope of her filmography, Steele regularly singles out her work with Federico Fellini in 8 ½ and talks about the Italian filmmaker in glowing terms. In a forward she wrote for the book Fellini: The Sixties, Steele described what it was like to work with the acclaimed director explaining that: “Everyone who worked with him felt they shared a private secret with him — that he and he alone could mirror their souls like a great, slightly ironic Buddha.”
Steele’s only marriage has been to the screenwriter James Poe. The couple were together for nearly ten years between 1969-1978 and they had one child. Poe died in 1980 and today he’s best remembered as the man who wrote or co-wrote a number of Academy Award-nominated screenplays including AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (’56), CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (’58), LILIES OF THE FIELD (’63) and THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON’T THEY? (’70).
The actress has often been a reluctant interviewee and is known to frequently tell tall tales, forget facts and spin entertaining yarns. She most likely does so in order to keep herself occupied while having to answer the same questions over and over again from dull-headed reporters or worshipful fans like yours truly. With that mind, any or all of these “fun facts” could be white lies so enjoy them but don’t assume they’re written in stone. Barbara Steele is an enchanter who weaves her own unique kind of magic and she has certainly cast a spell on this writer.
Acclaimed ambient loop box Buddha Machine 1 to be released again in 2017 edition, threatens to put those fat cats in “Big Ambient” out of business
While most band’s get rich (or die trying) creating songs, albums and possibly “sounds,” Chinese auteurs of ambient FM3 attained their cult status the old fashioned way: by creating a physical, mechanical THING called the Buddha Machine which a listener could hold in the palm of their hand, cycling through a series of short ambient loops. That all happened 12 years ago. And in the time between then and now, the machine has garnered praise from the type of people that an ambient machine ought to be getting noticed by: Brian Eno, Phillip Glass, Throbbing Gristle, and David Byrne, who described the instrument/machine as a glimpse into the future of how music will be distributed to fans and, more specifically, as: … a transistor radio sized device that plays endlessly changing sounds, chosen by the program, from a given set of notes and sounds. There is, as one would expect, no arc to these compositions—no beginning, middle and/or end. They are merely states of being, not substitutes for narrative. These indeterminate scores can be viewed a bit like the literature that emerges out of oral traditions—the great epics and sagas. Given a ringing endorsement like that, you’re probably sitting there wondering why you don’t have a Buddha Machine sitting in the palm of your hand and changing the goddamned Future of Music right now? Well, there is good news, and there is Good News (all unrelated to Trump): First, a Buddha Machine, despite being a piece of instrumentation from a distant future, is actually cheaper than most pieces of instrumentation from the past, about $20 in America. Second, despite being a cult piece of machinery holding pride of place in the studios of Enophiles worldwide, VERY OWN machine can actually be bought relatively simply. In fact, there is a new generation of the Buddha Machine coming in December, and it’s available to pre-order at Bleep now in a color of your choice. “Sick!” right? Totally. Go get one if you want one. Before David Byrne buys them all to use as doorstops. http://j.mp/2zmT89I
