Browning of your turfgrass is normal in autumn and winter within the Southwestern U.S., but browning of turfgrass could also be caused by pathogens, diseases, and insects. The turfgrass shown in the larger photo is healthy, although browning due to seasonal changes, which is normal as previously mentioned. This is contrasted with the turfgrass shown in the inset, which is affected by brown patch disease. Brown patch, which causes irregular round areas or patches, tan foliage, leaf lesions, as well as mycelial growth of hyphae that appears as cobwebs, is caused by fungal infection of cool-season grasses only.
If you notice these types of symptoms on your turfgrass, give #LingoExterminators a call (229.54.LINGO) that we may provide proper diagnosis of these symptoms, and a possible treatment that provides a remedy.🐜🧢🌎

DEET (N,N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), not to be confused with DDT, which is banned in the U.S. and in other parts of the world, is a substance that comprises the active ingredient of nearly a third of all insect repellents, including products used against mosquitoes. DEET was first discovered by the U.S. Army in 1946 and was registered for general use by the public nearly a decade later. DEET products are currently available in a variety of formulations, including "liquids, lotions, sprays, and even impregnated materials, such as wristbands" (Pubchem 2019). Formulations to be applied to human skin contain from 4% to 100% DEET. Approximately 230 products containing DEET are currently registered with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (Pubchem 2019).
DEET works by interfering with the way insects smell or detect CO₂ or lactic acid, which is emitted by prey, including humans. This causes the insects to be warded off as they cannot find suitable hosts with their antennae.
The structure of DEET shown includes a benzene ring, which is the 6-sided figure marked here. The benzene ring confers stability across various temperatures and lends to the long-lasting residual properties of DEET. A recent study showed that DEET had higher insecticide (insect-killing) ability in mosquitoes than other types of insecticides (Kitau et al., 2014). 🧪🦟

Orgo all over again…🧪
Hexagons are 6-sided figures, also called polygons, that are used to represent cyclic hydrocarbons, including many pesticides.
This concrete walkway of geometric shapes and pavers is very appealing and can be seen outside The Cookie Shoppe, which is one of my favorite restaurants in Albany. I’m reminded of the Lingo Logo by these hexagons on this walkway.

Made for mulching
Mulching at a depth of 2"-4” is recommended during any time of the year, but especially useful in the late spring to retain water, reduce erosion, to provide insulation, prevent weed seed development, and for aesthetic purposes.📏 Organic mulch should be kept several inches away from the tree trunks to prevent crown rot and vole feeding. Organic mulch materials include pine bark, pine straw, and compost. Pine straw is the most stationery of these, which is shown in the image below. Geotextiles and landscape fabrics are also available for mulching. Rock and rubber mulches increase evaporation by increasing heat transfer down into the soil. Lastly, plastic mulch stifles the oxygen and water content of the soil stressing the plant and is not recommended. Call Lingo Exterminators for expert pest management service!
