Acoustically Treating Side Reflections: Even Better and Not as Hard as You Think

It's common acoustics knowledge that "early" or "first" reflections in the listening room are the most damaging to sound quality. Every single loudspeaker setup on the face of the earth will have to deal with these to some degree, and the ill effects tend to be concentrated in the midrange where both the bulk of musical content lives and the ear is very sensitive. And yet many audiophiles, yours truly included, spend far less time addressing this than tinkering with our gear. The reasons are understandable - decor considerations and living practicality often make acoustical treatments a nonstarter. Often we'll throw down a heavy rug to temper the floor reflections and call it a day, leaving side walls untreated to say nothing of the ceiling. I get it, it's a pain to deal with acoustics. But as my equipment continued to improve, one particular pesky reflection was weighing more and more heavily as the greatest sonic issue in my setup, and I finally resolved to doing something about it. Well, I was pleasantly surprised (and maybe a little embarrassed) that I was able to address this with a very minimal outlay of trouble and expense, effecting a massive improvement on the quality of my music!

The Problem

My room is a bit lopsided - I have the system placed along a 11 foot wall, with an exterior wall to the left side and an open layout to the kitchen and entryway on the right. It's over 26' long with 12' ceilings, so rear and overhead reflections are less of a concern, at least at midrange frequencies. A heavy wool rug with pad tames the floor decently. There is a kitchen island to the right but it doesn't seem to factor that strongly as an early reflection source. The left wall, on the other hand, is very clearly causing all sorts of issues - a lopsided stereo image, uneven midrange frequency response (different notes along an instrument or singer's range would pop forward or recede due to the comb filter effect) and a general feeling of glare and confusion that would make extended listening fatiguing, particularly at higher volume levels. I had from time to time mitigated it by propping up absorbent objects like a dog bed against the wall, but after a lot of eye rolling from my wife who pointed out I was robbing one of our pups of his leisure spot, I decided to find a more permanent and effective solution.

There are tons of online resources for finding early reflection points - e.g. here's one from GIK Acoustics - so I'll leave you to that homework. I finally used the mirror technique to locate exactly where the side wall reflection point was, and luckily it is nearly perfectly centered on a 36" section of solid wall. I was relieved it wasn't on the windows, as treating those in a spouse-friendly way would have been far more difficult. Now all I needed was to decide whether to diffuse, absorb or both at that point, and find the appropriate treatment.

Treatment Option

GIK Acoustics is a well-known purveyor of affordable treatments and I had a good experience ordering a number of their 242 acoustic panels for my wife's music practice room. I'll comment more on them in a dedicated review, but the important things to note is that they feature 2" of fiberglass foam with 1.5" of air gap between the foam and the wall, which increases overall effectiveness, and they are also available with a "scatter plate" option if you want to mix diffusion and absorption. GIK gives this guidance for early reflection treatment:

Though diffusion is sometimes the right solution in the context of a design that supports it, in most existing problematic spaces absorption is not only more effective, but also a simpler, less expensive option.

I decided to stick with absorption and forgo the scatter plate option. A pack of three 24" x 36" panels ran USD $183 plus shipping. Since I only needed one panel, I used the other two to further treat my wife's room. Most people will need two of these for side walls and you can play with the most effective location for a 3rd panel (e.g. directly behind the listening position, if the rear wall is nearby). I roughly centered it vertically with the upper-frequency acoustical center of my Audiovector SR 6 speakers (the point between the AMT tweeter and 6" midrange). With the panel's 36" height this easily covers incident reflections from any sitting or standing positions in my listening area. Hanging was a piece of cake - a single screw directly screwed into drywall is more than strong enough.

Results

The improvement was instantly obviously. Finally I had a balanced soundstage, sitting more naturally at the plane of the speakers with a rock solid center image. Vocals and woodwinds took on a buttery smoothness, and the overall presentation was much more relaxed and evenhanded. The GIK panel was significantly more effective than other materials and panels I had tried (e.g. a 2" Acoustimac Eco Core panel), largely making the side wall disappear. It won't kill all reflections - you'd need a significantly thicker panel and bass trapping - but it sufficiently attenuates them to more than tolerable levels.

Interestingly, I've found Audiovector speakers, with their AMT tweeters and slender, tapered cabinets, to be relatively sensitive to side wall disturbances. The Silverline SR17 Supreme monitors with their more traditional Dynaudio drivers and cabinet were still able to image pretty well without treatment. I'm guessing the lateral radiation pattern of the speakers is pretty different - I'll have to take some frequency response measurements to confirm - so YMMV, but any speaker will benefit.

Conclusion

If you have a bare side wall by your speakers, you really owe it to yourself to try this most basic of treatments. We 'philes are more than willing to throw hundreds, thousands of dollars at cables and sundry accessories, but a modicum of effort mitigating the peskiest of early reflections can provide far greater return on investment. Using the right type of panel is also key - the GIK 242 measures well and was particularly effective in my application. There are dressier, more visually appealing options from companies like Vicoustic, but check specs carefully to see if they're comparable in absorption. And convincing your significant other of the decor is an assignment I leave to you. 🙂

Armageddon on a Shoestring: Prepare for Disasters Without Destroying Your Budget

The Simple Dollar, 17 Sep 2017

Just before and right after every disaster, you see news coverage of crowded stores, depleted shelves, and interviews with people who don’t have enough (water, batteries, whatever).

Don’t be those people. September is National Preparedness Month, and its theme--”Disasters don’t plan ahead. You can.”--is also the theme of this post. Even if you’re on a tight budget, or living paycheck to paycheck, you should be prepared to live at least three days without basic services.

Should things go south, got any idea how you’d eat, drink, and stay warm until things got back to normal?

Two other things you might not consider until it’s too late:

Where would you and your family go to the bathroom if the power and/or water cut out?

Do you have a manual can opener?

Sound funny? It’s deadly serious. If you don’t have a plan for the potty, your back yard is going to get real foul real fast. (Assuming, that is, that you even have a back yard.) And imagine the frustration of not being able to open up those cans of soup for your hungry household. (Assuming, that is, that you have a way to heat them up.)

The good news: You probably already have a lot of the stuff that Ready.gov suggests you need. The better news is that you can get the rest of it very cheaply, or even for free. And the time to do this is now, before the next power failure, ice storm, blizzard, hurricane, earthquake, or windstorm reshapes your life.

What’s for dinner? The “food” section of Ready.gov suggests the best foods to have on hand: protein- and calorie-rich items with long shelf lives: soups, stews, canned beans, quick-cooking oatmeal, peanut butter, dehydrated foods (e.g., instant mashed potatoes), dried fruit, canned fish or meat, protein or granola bars, and crackers.

To that list I would add almond or other nut butters (not everyone likes peanut butter), some gelatin or instant pudding (a dessert can really brighten the day), Nutella (it’s just fun to eat), interesting foods from the supermarket’s health-food section (hummus, refried beans, even vegetarian taco filling), good-quality bouillon cubes, and hardtack--aka “pilot bread.”

You might already have a lot of the foods you need. Now you just have to keep it that way, i.e., never let your pantry get too bare. When something your household really loves goes on sale, get a few extra. Use a dark marker to write the sell-by date on the front (not the top!) of each food product and make sure they get rotated and replaced regularly.

Pro tip: A site called CouponMom.com does a state-by-state match of coupons, many of them downloadable, to sales in supermarkets, drugstores, and even dollar stores; fairly often you’ll pay nothing at all for food, toiletries, and first-aid supplies.

Should you buy disposable plates and bowls? Residents of hurricane country probably should, since they’re likely to lose water and power regularly. As for others, that’s up to you. If you’re without running water, you certainly shouldn’t use up precious stored water to wash dishes.

Pro tip: Watch clearance sales after major holidays and get up to 90% off paper plates, bowls, and cups. Don’t necessarily throw them out after eating; sometimes the higher-quality stuff can be used more than once.

Water, water everywhere? Ready.gov suggests stashing one gallon per person per day for at least three days. Got pets? Don’t forget some extra agua for them.

Rather than spending money on bottled water, fill empty milk jugs or two-liter soft drink bottles until you have enough. Every few months, use the water in these containers for tasks like watering the garden or doing hand laundry, then refill them with fresh water for storage.

A word to those who filter their water: that sink-mounted or whole-house filtration system won’t do you much good if the power is out or the municipal water supply system is damaged. In that case, have a filtration pitcher and at least one extra cartridge in your emergency kit. (I regularly see these pitchers at thrift shops.)

Or take a simpler route: Sprinkle a little powdered drink mix into each glass of water to disguise the yucky taste. These packets cost about a dime each at Walgreens and dollar stores.

Incidentally, most of us already have a decent amount of water stored--in the water heater.

Sometimes a hot drink is soothing--or even potentially life-saving--in a winter storm emergency. (Hypothermia victims are cold all the way to their innards.) Thus teabags, instant coffee, or cocoa mix are all great things to have on hand.

Pro tip: Whenever you boil water, make enough extra to put into a thermos-type jug.

For hot water you’ll need a safe heat source--and again, you may already have one in the form of a wood stove, camp stove, barbecue grill, hibachi, or burn barrel. While modern gas stoves may not function normally in a power outage, you might be able to use the range the old-fashioned way: lighting the burners with a match.

Any pan you use for heating water or food is likely to get sooty over a fire. Consider looking for an extra pot or two at thrift stores and/or yard sales. (I’ve found three pans that way, including a cast-iron skillet, in the “free” boxes at yard sales; maybe you’ll be that lucky, too.)

Note: It is essential to cook outdoors with grills and open flames, not indoors, due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators pose the same risk. The Orlando Sentinel recently reported that five people died and more than a dozen were injured due to CO poisoning after Hurricane Irma.

Thus if you’re planning to create your own post-emergency power, get a CO detector and follow other best practices suggested by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

A roof over your head. Organizations like FEMA and the American Red Cross may show up after major disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes. But they can’t always help everyone, and some people prefer to shelter in place. Besides, some problems (windstorms, ice storms) don’t necessarily make your home unsafe--just inconvenient.

The questions, then, are how you’ll stay warm or cool. In cool or cold weather, dress everyone in layers: long underwear top and bottom, plus wool socks, extra shirts, fleece layers or sweaters, and knitted caps. The quilts or comforter from your bed might stand in for a sleeping bag.

Pro tip: Plan to have everyone sleep in the same small room for shared heat.

If you don’t have enough warm items for everyone, time to hit the thrift stores and yard sales. For other tips, search online for “staying warm during power failure.”

Keeping cool post-hurricane or during power outages is a real challenge. Some fairly obvious tactics are staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and avoiding direct sun. Pull the curtains or shades and close off warmer rooms (e.g., the ones with south- and west-facing windows) to keep things from heating up. Sleep in the basement, if you have one (and if you have enough flashlight batteries).

Lighting is an enormous issue with regard both to safety and morale. While plenty of people stock up on candles, the danger of fire is very real. If you must use them, put them in jars set well out of the reach of children, pets, and anyone who might bump into a table.

Flashlights are safer. My partner and I have five headlamps (he bought them in a blister pack at Costco) plus some hand-held torches. If you don’t want to store batteries, look for flashlights that recharge by being cranked or that can recharge via your vehicle’s cigarette lighter.

Where’s the bathroom? As the children’s book says, everybody poops. The question is where you’ll do that.

I grew up in a rural area and we filled buckets and the tub with water when bad weather was predicted, then used that water to flush the toilets when the power went out. That’s still a good idea.

Pro tip: Before filling the tub, thoroughly duct-tape the stopper in place. Otherwise the water may slowly, inexorably seep out.

You may already have a giant bucket (or more than one) left over from a painting job or a bulk buy of laundry soap. If you don’t, get one: It will make a passable toilet. (Check Freecycle and the “free” section of Craigslist.)

Since not everyone is physically capable of squatting over a bucket, look online for toilet seat that snaps onto most five-gallon pails. If you’re flush, so to speak, then splurge on a prefab portable toilet.

Pro tip: Line the bucket with at least one layer of garbage bag, and throw in some clumping cat litter.

You’ll want hand sanitizer for afterwards, and some baby wipes (which I call “shower in a pouch”) to keep the rest of you clean. And speaking of babies: If you’ve got one and you routinely run out of diapers, break yourself of that habit pronto. You don’t want to be down to a couple of didies when trouble starts.

The same is true of pet food and supplies, and prescription medication. Do not run out of these things.

A few more final tips: When severe weather is predicted, boil some or all of the eggs you have. Should the power go out, you’ll have an easy-to-eat protein. Should the power not go out, just about everybody loves deviled eggs.

Buy supplies with gift cards you get by cashing in points from rewards credit cards, or rewards programs, to get gift cards to places like Walmart, Target, and Amazon.

Check out the dollar store. Paper products, hand sanitizer, and some interesting foods can be found there.

Keep small bills on hand. It’s possible that stores won’t be able to process credit or debit cards right away.

Make sure you have matches--even if you aren’t using candles you might need to light a camp stove or hibachi.

Stocking up all at once? Ask the supermarket manager for a discount on buying cases of canned goods, especially the store brand.

Remember how challenging it can be to build and maintain a cash emergency fund? Think of emergency preparedness the same way: It can take some doing, but it’s as essential as financial preparedness.

Get started right now, by taking pen and paper throughout your home to look at what you already have. Then make a list of what you still need, and make creative, frugal plans to get those items. Don’t wait until after an emergency happens to start looking for your flashlight. Or your can opener.

Sure, you could go buy a bidet or purchase a bunch of reusable items but I wanted to give you some simple, practical changes for all areas of your home. Some things you likely already have and some you may need to invest in, but I promise they are worth it. I’m hoping you get some good ideas out of this post to help you embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. Let’s jump in!

Kitchen

Food storage – Do you have empty pickle or kimchi jars? What about mason jars laying around your house? Glass jars are the perfect container for seed, nut and leftover food storage. No need to invest in fancy Pyrex… use what you have!

Paper towels – Be honest: how many paper towels do you use in a day? I used to use A LOT. Something about knowing you’re grabbing a fresh, clean towel to wipe your hands or the counter… But not anymore! Cut up a stained old t-shirt or use cloths or rags instead of paper towels. Don’t have any spare rags at your house, invest in some “unpaper” towels. Store all of the clean towels in a cute jar on your countertop and then have another jar or container under your sink to put the dirty ones. When your dirty pile is big enough you can do a load of wash and reuse.

Spice containers – Do you toss your spice container as soon as it’s empty? Think about reusing them! You can bring your empty spice container to most grocery stores to refill. If you have other small jars laying around, use those for your spice jars!

Saran wrap – This stuff makes me cringe but I will admit… it works well so I understand why people use it! BUT I have a substitute for you. These silicone stretch lids work soooo well, are reusable and super easy to clean! Bee’s wrap is also a more sustainable choice.

Sandwich/snack baggies – I feel like I used these A TON growing up but use them less so now. Now, I’m obsessed with reusable silicone bags. I love these Stasher or (Re)Zip bags. 100% worth the investment. Alternatively: reuse what you have! Yes I’m the girl who washes her ziplocs…no I have zero shame about it!

Grocery Shopping

I considered making a separate blog just for grocery shopping but for now, I’ll leave you with two simple tips!

Be conscious of what you’re grabbing at the grocery store.

Do you need plastic bags for your produce? No! Just wash them when you get home. If you really need a bag for your produce consider buying the reusable cloth bags.

Are you purchasing a lot of packaged food that you could either skip or purchase in bulk using reusable containers?

Instead of buying individually packaged products (like cheese or fruit) buy in bulk and portion them out yourself.

Look for “free” produce instead of packaged. (i.e. greens, brussels sprouts, etc)

Bring your reusable bags. You’ve heard this 125320 times but I’m reminding you again! You don’t need a fancy, trendy reusable tote. Work with what you have. Most of my reusable bags are the Outdoor Voices fabric bag.

Bathroom

Soap – Do you use one bottle of soap and then throw it away? Think about using a bar of soap or buying soap in bulk and refilling a reusable container! Lots of zero waste stores are popping up where you can bring a container to fill of laundry detergent, hand soap… alllll the things.

Razor – You may not know this but there are reusable razors! And I’m not just talking about the good ol’ Venus razors with replacement heads (still wasting!). I looked up a lotttt of razors and what I found is this: brands either have a program to recycle the blades for you or they make blades you can recycle on your own. I didn’t find any that will sharpen and send you back your blades so if you know of any of those brands please let me know! Albatross has a cool blade recycling program and Package Free gives you instructions on recycling your own blades.

Menstrual Cup – I did a whole post about why I switched to using a menstrual cup (and why I’ll never go back to tampons) so check that out for the full details BUT have you thought about how much you waste every time your period comes around? Not only are you tossing countless feminine products but also the individual packaging. Highly, HIGHLY recommend switching to a menstrual cup! I use the Lena Cup but have also heard great things about Saalt, Lunette, Dot Cup, Dutchess or OrganiCup.

Cotton Pads – Do you use cotton pads to apply toner or remove your finger nail polish? Did you know there are reusable fabric pads? Buy a pack of super affordable fabric pads or make your own if you’re feeling fancy! Toss them in the wash with your towels and you have reusable fabric pads. Again, you can just use an old t-shirt or towel for this purpose as well!

Makeup Remover Wipes – Instead of using a single use makeup remover wipe each night, use a microfiber cloth to remove your makeup. You can use it all week long and then toss it in the wash for a deep clean!

Cleaning + Laundry

Laundry Detergent – I mentioned this earlier but did you know that you can buy laundry detergent in bulk instead of buying multiple plastic containers a year? I couldn’t find any online but lots of local zero-waste shops sell their own detergent that you can stock up on. Shop small and waste less = win, win! Branch Basics also had a refillable laundry detergent option.

Dryer Sheets – Besides being potentially toxic (source) we used to go through soooo many dryer sheets! A super simple swap is to use wool dryer balls! If don’t have any, they’re super affordable on Amazon or better yet grab some tennis balls lying around! If you like the scent that dryer sheets add to your laundry, add a couple drops of essential oil to the dryer balls.

Sponges – I didn’t know this until recently but there are reusable sponges! If you’re a sponge lover, grab a couple reusable sponges so you waste less. Hint: if you don’t want to buy anything, you can always just use old rags/cloths and keep reusing them! A few months ago I picked up some wool scraps from a vendor at a farmer’s market. They make the perfect biodegradable sponges but as soon as I’ve used them up I’m buying some reusable sponges since I know wool scraps can be hard to come by.

All-purpose cleaners – So many cleaning products and especially all-purpose cleaners come in plastic bottles. Think about grabbing some reusable spray bottles or using some you already have to make your own cleaning products! I’m obsessed with Branch Basics and use it to clean my entire home. Seriously. As part of my journey to reduce the amount of plastic I use and the waste I produce, I have been making small changes around the house, including the bathroom. So far I’ve been making changes to brushing my teeth and washing my hair, but I want to start with updating my skincare routine.

One of the first things I did when I started becoming more conscious of living an eco-friendly or plastic and waste free lifestyle, in terms of making changes in the bathroom, was to attended a friend’s DIY beauty product workshop. Having collected plenty of glass jars and a myriad of ingredients we decided to focus on deodorant, body scrubs and toothpaste.

The deodorant, which was my favourite take away from the day, consists of baking soda, arrowroot flour or cornstarch, coconut oil and your choice of essential oil. These products work together to make a nice thick (cornflour), antibacterial (baking soda and coconut oil) mix that smells nice under your arms (essential oil). My suggestion is to start with the below quantities, stir until everything has mixed together and pop it in a jar. When you start applying only use a small amount as that’s all you need.

1/3 cup coconut oil 2 tbsp baking soda 1/3 cup arrowroot 10 – 15 drops of essential oils

This deodorant has lasted me months! And in that time I feel like I have been sweating less, using less deodorant and have not smelt once (not noticeably anyway, we all smell sometimes). I’m also excited to take it overseas with me as part of my waste free travel kit!

If you’re keen to try it yourself, keep in mind that even though it’s natural, it may not work for everyone. When I first started, my skin had a slight reaction (normally because it was applied after shaving), but after reducing the amount I put on (and I assume my skin becoming accustomed to it) this stopped completely. Next time I might even add slightly more coconut oil to the mix to make it more spreadable. If making it yourself, you can also just adjust the quantities and do trial batches.

For those who just can’t walk away from a spray, there are also recipes for making your own spray on antiperspirant, so just start looking!

Body scrubs were the next thing and are, at their simplest, a mixture of salt, sugar or coffee grounds and your choice of oil and additional ingredients. There is no set mix, so try starting with one part oil and two parts scrub and add away until you find your perfect scrub consistency. The one I made that day was raw sugar, coconut oil and a mix of lavender oil and lavender buds so that it can be an end of day relaxing scrub before bed. You can also try substituting sugar with coffee grounds or salt or adding honey to mix it up.

After using these products regularly and making more changes in other areas of the house, I was inspired to do more with my skincare.

A few months ago, I swapped out my cotton wool balls with reusable bamboo makeup remover wipes (I still have a bag of cotton wool in the cupboard, but I’ve kept it as an end of the line option or until I find a better use for it).

You can buy reusable makeup wipes in store or online, or you can make them yourself. I bought mine online on Amazon for about $10-$15, which included 20 circular bamboo wipes and a wash bag, but there are also local options available. They are easy to use, washable and the wash bag hangs on the back of the bathroom door and goes in the washing machine with the towels once full.

If you want to make them yourself, just find an old towel or wash cloth and cut it into easy to use sizes and store them in your bathroom.

I also changed the products I use on my face from ones that have a lot of unpronounceable ingredients, to those with very few or just one.

The moisturiser I use is produced by a local farmer where I grew up in rural NSW, which my mum regularly sends me (and is something I have been using for years). It’s a mix of coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax and I use it for my face, my body, as a lip balm and also as a make up remover. It is also excellent as a balm after I have shaved my legs, and it’s something simple enough that you can make it at home (or at least something pretty similar) with some recipes I’ve included below.

½ cup organic coconut oil, vitamin E oil, essential oil of your choosing ½ cup Olive oil, ½ cup coconut oil and ¼ cup beeswax (this is what I use) ½ cup Shea butter, 2 tbsp coconut oil and 2 tbsp olive oil (essential oils optional) 2 tbsp Coconut oil, 4 tbsp aloe vera gel, 1 tsp vitamin E oil and 2 tbsp almond oil 1 tbsp Almond oil, 1 tbsp honey, 2 tbsp cocoa butter and 2 tsp rose water.

I do still use regular body moisturisers, such as sorbolene or Cetaphil, because I’d like to use up what I have and make use of the containers rather than throwing any old products out. I always find it helpful to keep coconut oil in the cupboard as that works by itself for many purposes or mixed with other ingredients.

Rosehip oil is also in my daily routine because it is simple and smells nice. I normally use that as a base on my face and let it sink in before applying anything else (it also comes in a glass jar).

The face scrub I’m now using, I recently purchased from Lush (check them out) after finishing the last of my cream cleanser. I only use this every few days at the moment as I’m not really wearing any makeup unless it’s a night out, so most days I use a face washer and warm water.

For me going DIY with my beauty routine has been as much about using natural products as it has been about reducing my need to buy plastic. But we don’t all have to embrace the DIY life! There are plenty of other options out there, for example:

There are more and more brands offering natural products in sustainable or plastic packaging that you can find on Instagram, online or in stores.

With brands like Lush, all the products are made by hand with fresh, natural or sustainably sourced ingredients and all their tubs/containers are recyclable or reusable (you can even take them back into the store)

Bulk food stores often stock body wash or shampoo and condition in bulk so all you need to do is take your container and fill it up (in most cases they will also have a container you can buy)

Bar soaps are normally packed plastic free, and once they’re done there is no rubbish to throw away and no container to worry about reusing; and

More companies are offering alternative options to make up wipes and cotton ear buds that can be bought online and sent straight to your door.

It’s not about changing up your whole routine, just making a few changes here and there will make an impact on your wallet, your health, your lifestyle and the environment.
