Peaking out from this morning's coffee is a blacksmith style chefs knife inspired by a blacksmith knife (that seems to make a decent paring knife). I've got a little wrought iron for the spine, some wrought iron and low layer twist and some low layer random that would help make this beauty shine! I've designed it right about 11" as I plan to heat treat this using the @bavarianblacksmithexp new @jenkenkilns when it arrives. Test run day at @bavarianblacksmithexp before our damascus class with @nagelhausforge tomorrow. @kylethorntongram , @silvernaile_smithing , Sarah and I cranked up the gas forges and pressed out this wrought iron laminate blade this morning on our @coalironworks 12 ton. I wanted to run the forge welding test on wrought iron because it requires a higher heat than high carbon steel. I had a small bit of silicon bronze (from @onlinemetals ) leftover from another project, so I decided to forge a small salt/teaspoon. There is something peaceful about forging this delicate little spoons. Very little forging is hammer over head smash fest. Even when I want to work out some agression, I find that controlled forging is always better and more productive. I was recently asked to forge a putter. This is waaaaay out of my wheelhouse. I messed up 3 putters before this one and I wouldn't call this a modern marvel... maybe more of a miracle 😅 but it is done and it puts and it was really cool to open my eyes into forging something I had never considered. . I had a lot of issues: made 2 left handed, had delams, failed to isolate enough for an integral shaft arm, didn't have my mig welder here so I played hide the shitty welds with more shitty welds etc... . Even with all that and the frustration that comes with issues, I do think I would like to make more putters. I want to totally viking style one out though. Some still shots of the celtic war knife build. It's a low layer pattern with a forged ring pommel and globular grip adorned with cultural geometric patterns. The scabbard is of simple wood construction with forged bronze and copper fittings wrapped in hemp cord. . The balance is quite lovely and the grip is surprisingly comfortable. I've recently had a lot of requests for that Serbian chefs knife that's going around. Here's my first take. Note that I am not trying to recreate exactly someone else's design. I am going in my own direction on these. I have a couple more to go but this was a good start. It was forged from a 2"x2"x.6" piece of 25 layer @bob_rankin_custom_knives damascus. It was a challenge to get this knife from that cut off, but in the end I got it! I decided to grind in a little hollow to release tension on cut veggies. Seemed to work pretty well and it added a nice dramatic flair. .
