...Noodling around with some tests of lighting profiles in Daz Studio, while background-considering the gonna-happen-soon business of recovering the Tale of the Five trilogy for both Ebooks Direct and Amazon. ...This project's been hanging fire for a while, but there's no point in putting it off any longer, even though it'll be a lot of work. Cover styles have changed a lot in the last few years, so it's time these had covers that'll reflect that.

What this means for me is producing four sets of covers, all in different styles, so I can do A/B testing on them at the 'Zon. (Meaning that for four different week-long periods, you publish the books in each of the separate formats and see which two get the best results in terms of sales. Then you give each of the two winners another two-week period and see how those results behave.)

The guide to the various currently-popular cover styles I've been using is this one. (Which isn't a bad one at all; but since the people publishing this page want you to hire them for this kind of work, that's sort of to be expected). Numbers 1, 4 and 9 on their list are the ones that appeal to me or are appropriate. The others either strike me as bad choices for these books, or just annoy me. (#2 in particular. I've seen it well executed, but I've started getting kind of sick of seeing it.)

Meanwhile, for your amusement, here are my current sketches... just to disabuse you of any ideas that they look in any way professional at this point. :) Two versions of the minimalist/object oriented style, and one each of the 3D modeling and the double exposure/burnthrough variant. We'll see what comes out the other end of the process in a month or so. (In fact I may put up a poll here with one book in four versions, and see what the local readership thinks.)

...Meanwhile as regards the topmost image (currently titled "This Is Not A Good Time"): I live in hope that someday I'll get Héalhra's damn mane under control. Daz's dForce utility is very good at handling some material textures and making them respond more like gravity had some actual effect on them. But in this case it's been like fighting ineffectively with a bad perm. (eyeroll) (Also, who here was it that put a pink Hello Kitty bow on him last time I posted an image of him fluffed up like this? It left me giggling for days and now I can't find it...) :)

The next few weeks passed so intensely that Neil didn’t even have time to think. In a way, that was a good thing. Neil didn’t know how he had done it his freshman year with both worrying about Riko and his dad while also trying to win an Exy championship. In all honesty, Andrew tried to reassure him and Kevin that Shoto could be nothing, yet it was still something that neither Neil nor Kevin could get out of their heads.

It didn’t help that they still kept seeing Charlie and Shoto meeting all over the grounds. They sat like simmering embers in Neil’s mind, ready to fade away and every time he saw the pair, his imagination stoked back into roaring flames, causing wild theories and impending dread to burnthrough him. They were this entity that blazed in his mind, unable to be snuffed out. Not until he found out what they were up to.

Human Weakness - The Challenger Disaster

Circumstances:

On January 28 1986, Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members. The disintegration of the vehicle began after a joint in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The failure was caused by the failure of O-ring seals used in the joint that were not designed or tested for the unusually cold conditions that existed at launch. This caused a breach in the SRB joint, allowing pressurized burning gas to reach the outside and causing the separation of the SRB's aft field joint attachment and the structural failure of the external tank, before aerodynamic forces broke up the orbiter.

Pressures:

NASA engineers were pressured to go ahead with the launch despite unusual and untested launch conditions due to a number of delays:

“Challenger was originally set to launch from KSC in Florida at 14:42 Eastern Standard Time (EST) on January 22, 1986. Delays in the previous mission, STS-61-C, caused the launch date to be moved to January 23 and then to January 24. The launch was then rescheduled to January 25 due to bad weather at the Transoceanic Abort Landing (TAL) site in Dakar, Senegal. NASA decided to use Casablanca as the TAL site, but because it was not equipped for night landings, the launch had to be moved to the morning (Florida time). Predictions of unacceptable weather at KSC on January 26 caused the launch to be rescheduled for 09:37 EST on January 27.

The launch was delayed the next day, due to problems with the exterior access hatch. First, one of the micro-switch indicators, used to verify that the hatch was safely locked, malfunctioned. Then, a stripped bolt prevented the closeout crew from removing a closing fixture from the orbiter's hatch. By the time repair personnel had sawed the fixture off, crosswinds at the Shuttle Landing Facility exceeded the limits for a Return to Launch Site abort. While the crew waited for winds to die down, the launch window expired, forcing yet another scrub.”

In this, we see a human weakness in that of pressure, where a computer would not experience the visceral side of time pressure that causes people to make mistakes and cut corners and has been the cause of other disasters throughout history. (see Chernobyl Disaster)

Following recommendations by Thiokol Engineers to delay the launch until conditions improved, a NASA Manager, Hardy stated, "My God, Thiokol, when do you want me to launch—next April?".

Influences:

A investigation into the disaster by the Rogers Commission found that NASA’s organisational culture and decision-making processes had been key contributing factors in the accident and were the key human elements in the eventual failure. We see that a report dating back almost 15 years prior to the disaster found a critical problem in the design. The report stated that "if burnthrough occurs adjacent to [liquid hydrogen/oxygen] tank or orbiter, timely sensing may not be feasible and abort not possible". Furthermore, NASA had known about the potentially catastrophic flaw in the O-rings almost 10 years prior to the Challenger launch that could trigger the other flaw mentioned above.

NASA managers also disregarded warnings from engineers about the dangers of launching in the particularly low temperatures, and failed to adequately report these technical concerns to their superiors.

For example: “one engineer suggested that joint rotation would render the secondary O-ring useless, but Hardy did not forward these memos to Thiokol (the contractor responsible for making the O-rings), and the field joints were accepted for flight in 1980.“

Changes:

“After the destruction of Challenger, the number of O-rings per field joint was increased to three.The seals of all of the SRB joints were required to contain the hot, high-pressure gases produced by the burning solid propellant inside, thus forcing them out of the nozzle at the aft end of each rocket.” NASA put this design change in place following the disaster, and although it is a reasonable change, it would not have been necessary if human error had not been a factor, and the known problems had been fixed prior to the disaster.

Workplace culture at NASA evidently needs change, though this is hard to bring about, so instead I will recommend that key decisions like launching in unsuitable conditions or going ahead with a design known to be flawed be made by a group of NASA staff and third-party experts instead of just one or two “higher-ups” having the power to make all decisions.
