Make It Better: 4L60E Swap For 1967–1972 Chevrolet C10s

Adding an Electronically Controlled Transmission Is Easier Than You Think

The GM overdrive transmission swap has been covered ad nauseam, and to be fair, it’s an incredibly straightforward swap for anyone who’s even done the most basic of hot rodding—that’s why we love it. Overdrive is the difference between cruising on the freeway with an engine chugging along at 1,800 rpm or winding out at nearly 3,000 rpm, which not only burns fuel about as quick as you can pump it but also raises oil temps and prematurely wears out an engine if you’re trying to keep with modern highway traffic. We’ll talk about some of the main “gotchas!” of the swap in Make It Better, a series that focuses on weekend projects that make daily driving your hot rod that much easier. Not only is our daily driven 1969 CST/10 now capable of modern freeway speeds but we can now hold a conversation in the cab since the small-block isn’t talking over everyone as it winds out. We went with Performance Automatic’s Street Smart package because it’s an affordable solution that provides everything necessary for the swap, from the converter (2,500 stall) to the digital controller. We also elected the electronically controlled 4L60E over its mechanical forefather, the 700-4R, to future-proof the driveline should we find a modern EFI bullet for our CST/10.

The main things you need to know about the 4L60E: you’ll have to move the transmission crossmember and shorten the driveshaft, and those exact dimensions are better measured in your project than us preaching an exact number. Trucks at the time were custom-ordered, there weren’t preset option packages like you see today, and then they were subsequently modified and “repaired” to no end with different engines and drivetrains, so your results may vary based on the combo of options.

For example, while this job typically only involves shortening the first half of the two-piece driveshaft, we also had to lengthen the rear half of the driveshaft. This is because the original Dana 60 was pulled for a smaller 12-bolt at some point in the truck’s history, and while the stock driveshaft was made to work in its rearward position, we relocated the carrier bearing back into its correct forward position.

Relocating the Transmission Crossmember

While we could’ve reused the original stamped-steel crossmember, it’s bulky and difficult to work with because it locates into the C-channel frame with both the upper and lower portions of the framerail. The CPP tubular crossmember is not only easier to install but frees up room for a tucked exhaust system above the crossmember.

To locate the transmission crossmember, we made a paper template of the CPP tubular crossmember’s mounting flanges to accurately locate the new bolt holes before drilling. Once the transmission was bolted to the engine—but still on a transmission jack—we slid in the CPP crossmember. With the crossmember installed to the tailhousing mount, we lowered the transmission and crossmember onto the frame. We made quick marks where the edges of the mounting flange were located, and used our paper template to locate the holes by placing it between the marks.

The CPP crossmember is slotted to allow for some DIY-precision, but only in the lateral directions. Using a center punch to locate the bit, we used a stepped drill bit to drill the holes. A quick shot of paint into the newly drilled holes will protect them from corrosion and rust. Before final assembly, loosen the crossmember (between the mount and crossmember, not the mount and transmission) at the tailhousing to allow everything to settle in its place while lowering the transmission jack for the final time. Torquing the frame bolts before the tailhousing mount bolts will prevent the rear mount from binding or twisting during final assembly.

Shortening the Driveshaft

With a short-tail TH350, there’s an approximately 2.5-inch difference in overall length, bellhousing face to tailshaft, compared with the 4L60E; this means you must shorten the front half of your two-piece driveshaft about that same amount. We called Inland Empire Driveline and brought them our stock driveshaft with measurements from the face of the 4L60E’s tailshaft to the center holes for the carrier bearing, and then from the carrier bearing’s mark to the centerline of the U-joint. In a twist unique to our 1969 CST/10, the rear half of the driveshaft had to be lengthened to accommodate the smaller 12-bolt axle that it currently has, as the original Dana 60 had a longer center housing. With those measurements on hand, any competent driveshaft shop can handle the job, and Inland Empire Driveline was able to turn this around the same day at the hands of their young-gun, Jose.

Wiring the Main Harness

While the electronics of the 4L60E are a turn off for some, don’t let that scare you from enjoying this swap’s plug-and-play benefits. With Powertrain Control Solution’s Simple Shift controller and TCI’s remote-mount TPS sensor (included in Performance Automatic’s package), there’s not a lot of guesswork. The Simple Shift comes complete with additional wiring for manual shifting and other features, but only needs a constant 12v, switched 12v, and brake-lamp input to get the job done—it’s easier than wiring in a stereo!

Switched 12v (yellow wire) came from the unfused ignition terminal on the factory fuse block, constant 12v (red wire) was ran to an underhood fuse block, and we tapped into the brake switch’s wiring (confirming 12v with a depressed brake pedal, the white wire/ground-side) for the lock-up converter release signal (gray wire). We also elected to wire in our tach signal from the HEI, which allows the PCS Simple Shift to fine-tune shift points based on engine rpm. Without it, you’ll see Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 71, Engine Speed Circuit Low; this is not an issue, though you may notice higher part-throttle shift points when the transmission is cold. To seal the harness as it passes through the cab, you will need to find a grommet (not included) for the recommended 1-3/8ths hole.

Otherwise, Performance Automatic provides detailed instructions on which Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) sub-harness to use for your specific application, and all connectors are mutually exclusive, so there’s no crossing wires.

Setting Up the Remote-Mount Throttle Position Sensor

In lieu of a vacuum modulator and kick-down cable or switch, the Performance Automatic 4L60E kit includes a remote Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) kit. The remote-mount TPS essentially replaces the kick-down cable of our TH350, making for a compact installation at the carburetor, though you’ll have to find a home for the TPS sensor itself. We elected to stuff ours in a Dodge Demon press kit box—because why not?

It’s worth mentioning that unless there’s tension on the cable, you will get a trouble code for low TPS voltage. Using a 1/8 drill bit as a feeler gauge, we gapped the wiper arm from its travel stop on the housing of the TPS sensor, per the directions. You may have to adjust the linkage geometry (using different holes in the TPS arm bracket) to get the correct amount of travel that both maximizes full-throttle TPS travel while still returning with the aforementioned gap. Confirm cable tension by powering up the PCS Simple Shift and ensuring no DTCs (look for Code 22 – Throttle Position Low) or by back-probing the signal (yellow) and ground (black) TPS wires to measure the signal voltage, with 0.5v being the minimum voltage the PCS Simple Shift wants to see at zero throttle.

Once set up, power up the PCS Simple Shift and study its “DIAG” LED—you’ll need to calibrate the throttle on first power-up or after any power loss. The LED’s duty cycle when flashing indicates throttle position as you floor the accelerator with the engine off. You might see it go solid before you’ve reached full throttle, but you can confirm calibration after an initial full-throttle sweep by confirming that the LED only turns solid at, or just before, full throttle afterward.

Vacuum Lines Be Gone!

The 4L60E also does not need a vacuum signal to operate, as it’s able to calculate load from the TPS (eliminating the vacuum modulator). Make sure you have the right combination of vacuum tees, caps, or unions to eliminate it, or find something to take its place—like our Auto Meter vacuum gauge.

Column Shifter Adjustment

We got lucky with our original column shifter’s adjustment; as-is, we were able to engage Drive in the standard position while also being able to select First gear (an extra detent over the P, N, D, 2, 1 pattern of the TH350). If you find that the transmission is not engaging Drive at the selector while the column shifter is resting in the proper Drive position, you may need to adjust the shift linkage. This is easily done under the hood at the column, where an adjustment sleeve loosened and slid along the shift rod to clock the shifter so it can safely engage Drive through First-gear detents.

1. RECYCLE

Recycling is a helpful and easy way to help our earth. By now we all know what this means. Separating our trash, glass and plastic bottles/containers and paper products. While it may seem a bit tedious at first, embracing this small task goes a long way by preventing non-biodegradable trash from clogging up our landfills.

2. REUSE

When recycling you may want to consider keeping some of those coffee containers to keep craft supplies in. We use ours for paint brushes, markers, pens, pencils, etc… You can decorate them too.

3. REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS

Whether you’re going to the grocery store, or a craft store take several reusable bags with you, and skip out on using plastic bags. However, if you do have plastic bags, you can often return them to your local supermarket/store and place them in the recyclable bag bin. This helps ensure we reduce the amount of bags ending in landfills worldwide.

4. ENERGY EFFICIENT BULBS

Here at the WoodyThings workshop (and at home) we’ve replaced nearly all of our lights with LEDs or energy efficient variants.

5. GARDEN AND COMPOST

You don’t need much room to set up a green house and extend your gardening season. If you have the room to set up a start a garden, try composting to fertilize your garden and reduce waste in landfills. You can use coffee grounds (Lord knows Angel and I go through our fair share of coffee while crafting), grass clippings, fallen leaves and vegetable peels.

If you don’t have the room for something big, why not grow your own herbs? Here’s a neat way to start your herb garden using egg shells.

A few years back, our neighbor’s tree fell into our yard and onto our pool during a storm. Naturally, we were a little peeved, but decided to turn lemons into lemonade.

We used pieces of that tree to make coasters and key chains and candle holders! Whenever possible, we try to reuse the scrap wood in our work shop to make personalized signs and/or birdhouses.

As a experiential marketing agency, we’re always blown away by the look on customers faces when they finally get “hands on” with our clients product or service. It’s not something they get to experience from the other end of a computer screen and we feel this is a one main key to the "human experience" as well as an incrediblally powerful marketing strategy.

So we had the idea, “How can we amplify these effects for both our clients and their customers?” The answer is quite simple; Leverage our favorite experiential marketing campaigns into one giant experiential masterpiece to produce the ultimate brand experience and of course the ROI that comes with it. Without further ado, here are 5 experiential marketing campaigns to shape the ultimate brand experience.

Stage 1: Set The Groundwork

During product launch, a basic PR promotional campaign should be first priority, whether that be billboards, QR code promos and/or augmented reality(pretty hot right now) something should be launched to start spreading some awareness. Of course amplification through social media is a huge boost for very little cost.

These tactics will usually be the “jumping off” point for the rest of the marketing campaign, so they are essential. They will also give you a solid indication of how your product/service is being perceived. Getting discouraging results? Don't hesitate to change up messaging, targeting and location if they don’t seem to be living up to expectations.

Stage 2: Go Mobile

Next, based on the above tactics, determine the best geographical areas for a mobile marketing tour. Some additional geo-research is most likely in order here. Feel free to get crazy with the research but keep in mind, YOUR MOBILE! The beauty of Mobile Marketing Tours is the ability to pack up and move if your not seeing results. Targeting down to specific cities should suffice but narrowing to neighborhoods will of course save time and fuel.

If your location happens to be at a trade show or convention, sidewalks are usually fair game but before sending brand ambassadors inside the show, be sure to check show policies as some events require special permission to advertise on the show floor. If you have a booth at the show you may find getting the team inside is much easier.

Stage 4: Paint The Town

If you are exhibiting at a trade show, back up the main trade show booth with a random pop-up shop. Often times permanently closed storefronts or just owners that skip town during shows will be open to renting out their space for a few days.

We find that creating an entirely different atmosphere/theme than the trade show exhibit works best. People are more likely to drop by to see something new and “exclusive” rather than something they have already paid to see at the show. And again! Don’t forget to promote each spot at the other.

Stage 5: Back It Up

One final note – always, always, always back up your experiential marketing campaign with social media. Hashtags, QR codes, show apps, anything you can put out will help turn your campaign in to the ultimate brand experience.
