Let’s put aside that these platforms provide clients and hardware (your roadmap lists Q4 2017 as a hopeful date for a client, which seems optimistic, and will presumably not be as feature rich as GOG or Steam at launch). On a purely marketing level, do you honestly think you can bring a game on your service even 1% of the eyeballs of such a competitor?
Steam is not a competitor. Perhaps this wasn’t clear in the Kickstater campaign page. Developers will have both (or even more) streams of revenue, as we do not impose exclusivity. Do you really think that we’re arrogant enough to come up and stand against a giant like Steam? Steam is not our competitor, it is instead a driving force to strive for better. In this light, us charging 15% for the service is not an overestimation. Why would a developer discard an additional stream of revenue (with higher overall income) when they can also prove to the gaming community that they can abide to their own milestones? There is no need for us to mention developers that have not followed their own milestones... and it’s the consumer who pay that price.
I know, the sensei are where your value lies this is where, and I don’t wish to be rude, I worry that your team is unfamiliar with the existing games business. You’re using copyrighted materials and other people’s stuff to promote yourselves without permission you have grabbed a bunch of art from games you don’t own, and are using it in an attempt to get paid. I’d think you were being nefarious and picking on defenseless indies if I didn’t see Ubisoft IP on your mockups. That shows a lack of understanding on your part. No amount of caveats and small print about voting is going to make that legally or creatively ok. Stop it. I’ve seen devs tweeting you requests to stop using their stuff, your business will require good, trusting relationships with devs, this isn’t a good start.
We already released a blog post on this and we have nothing else to state in this regard. The only thing we can say is that all we wanted to do was to gather feedback from gamers, that’s it.
Ditto on youtubers you’re citing some pretty big names there… did you get permission? It’s considered a little rude to even use review quotes to sell a game without an OK first, but here you’re grabbing soundbites from two or three years back which on the surface look like endorsements. Youtubers are going to be a big part of your business, hell, they’re a big part of all our businesses now. Using their likenesses / avatars and logos without permission might not be a great idea.
We reported the quotes from YouTubers because they served as insipration for EarlyNinja's model. As above, we never wanted to hint that they endorse our model, rather the fact that early access is broken.
Holding milestone payments is one of those ideas that makes a lot of sense to a fan of games who’s never made one, and I suspect is the idea this was built around. Except it doesn’t achieve the outcomes you state. Crucially, milestone payments are front loaded, because in real game dev, the most important thing in the world (besides making something awesome) is steady cash flow. Even a month with no cash coming in can kill a team *gestures to every story about a studio shut down ever*.

We did not think this level of detail was necessary in the Kickstarter page (which is long enough as it is), but apparently it is. This is not ransom. This is a system build to protect the consumer in case something goes wrong with the development, and we all know that gamers were scammed by early access developers. Sorry if a few messed up the whole. This simply prevents it and the same time allows a hard-working developer to stand out from the clutter of the market (can you do this in greenlight without any marketing activity?).
The point is that an individual developing a game is also an entrepreneur. It is true that EarlyNinja’s team does not have specific background in game development, but we can boast great successes in digital and media marketing (and a very vast knowledge as gamers). For this reason, we believe one of the reasons why EA has its issues is because there is great coding knowledge but limited resources and time. And this is where management skills can come in hand.
Milestones work pre-release and in private because there is room for both parties to work together, adjusting plans, so that a game actually comes out the other end. Publishers don’t generally use milestones as ransoms, because it’s in their best interest to get a game out at the budget planned for. Your system doesn’t encourage that, you are genuinely asking a studio to hand you the power to shut down their production immediately.
We are no publishers, but we aim to work closely to developers to ensure that their product has the maximum potential at launch. How do we do this? Through the Sensei.
Have you spoken to a lawyer about the contracts? No really, this is a big one. Your milestones are going to have to be maddeningly specific if you want to cut a project off from their cash, or you’re going to have to make the contract favor you so much as to be genuinely predatory. Assuming good faith and a genuine desire to treat devs well, you’re going to have to put together some massive contracts, and each dev is going to have to get quite a bit of legal aid to parse and commit to what you’re asking for. That’s going to cost them. Good news for industry lawyers though ;) … also consider the complexity of international deals.
All of our documentation is perfectly fine from the legal standpoint and we have dev contracts ready to be signed if you are interested. EDIT: to be clear, we are referring to the contracts that we would be signed from developers in case they’d want to join EN.
Is your price going up once you have a client? So, it’s 15% right now, and I give you steam keys. A bad deal for me, but let’s say I do it.. I think you’re worth that cost. I give 15% to you. Once you have your own client, your value to me goes up, because now you’re providing all those awesome services. Willing to commit to keeping at that price point?
Steam key integration is work in progress and there’s nothing to speak about, as it does not even pertain to our current funding goal. The price charged from EN will never vary in this respect.
None of this makes early access games better. Not even a little bit. Right now, shitty early access games are caught and mocked very, very quickly. They die on the vine because the PC community is a beautifully communicative lot. That’s good for consumers, because it’s genuinely tough to buy something without knowing it’s bad (and refunds can be sought if a game sucks.. a fact you kinda don’t mention anywhere). Projects fail or succeed quickly, and everyone moves on.
Yes, trash EA games are mocked and taken care of quite quickly, but that doesn’t mean gamers won’t be throwing their money in the toilet during their selling time. About the refund policy, EN’s refund policy is explained in the reply regarding milestones. The only way a user will ever get a full refund is when he requests it during the first 15 days from purchase. Out of curiosity... what are Steam’s refund policies?
I don’t think you’re bad people, you all look lovely in your team photo, but this idea seems riddled with misunderstandings about game production, and some ill thought out choices in terms of promotion. I’d encourage you to step back, readdress some of the core ideas that got you here, and relaunch with something badass that the development community and gamers can really get behind. Those of us who work hard to make great games (and occasionally succeed) will never shy away from a service that genuinely helps us to do so :)

Virtual LabCon is a Wrap!
Last week, we held the very first virtual LabCon. When it became clear that we needed to cancel the Atlanta conference in order to do our part to help flatten the curve of coronavirus, we immediately shifted gears and planned to hold LabCon by video. So on Monday morning, 50 people logged into LabCon from their homes and offices and got to work.
Shifting from an in-person meeting to an online meeting was a lot of work—especially for Stephanie and Jennifer. But it also felt like we had prepared for it for years. Lawyerist has always had remote team members, so we’ve been doing video meetings for a long time, including coaching, mastermind sessions, webinars, and workshops with Lawyerist Lab and Insider members.

Virtual LabCon is a Wrap!
Last week, we held the very first virtual LabCon. When it became clear that we needed to cancel the Atlanta conference in order to do our part to help flatten the curve of coronavirus, we immediately shifted gears and planned to hold LabCon by video. So on Monday morning, 50 people logged into LabCon from their homes and offices and got to work.
Shifting from an in-person meeting to an online meeting was a lot of work—especially for Stephanie and Jennifer. But it also felt like we had prepared for it for years. Lawyerist has always had remote team members, so we’ve been doing video meetings for a long time, including coaching, mastermind sessions, webinars, and workshops with Lawyerist Lab and Insider members.
Of course, we didn’t just throw people into a virtual chat. Even though we didn’t have a lot of notice, we brought our own vision to LabCon. The paper’s one-time data guru can’t stop kicking his ex-employer for its 2020 polling analysis and supposed capitulation to Trump.
Nate Silver made his name as The New York Times’ data guru, creating the methodology that predicted Barack Obama’s re-election.
Now, Silver’s method seems to be to stir up trouble for the Times.

The 41-year-old editor of the data-driven news site FiveThirtyEight recently called his former employer arrogant, engaged in an extended Twitter debate with his successor, who is also named Nate, and helped ignite outrage online over the paper’s front-page headline on the president’s response to two mass shootings, a wound that caused such pain it obliged Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger and executive editor Dean Baquet to hold an all-staff meeting this week to clear the air.
Silver’s persistent criticism of the Times, stretching back to the last presidential election, has long struck some inside the newsroom as less about methodology and more about personal grievances with the paper that was unable to meet his demands to expandFiveThirtyEight and now publishes The Upshot, which features Nate Cohn’s coverage of elections, polling and demographics.
In discussions with POLITICO, Times staffers questioned Silver’s motivation for repeatedly criticizing the paper, though declined to comment publicly, declining to pick a fight with Silver and his three-plus million Twitter followers. However, frustrations have spilled out publicly, at times, with reporters suggesting on Twitter that Silver’s assessments of the paper’s journalism veered beyond respectful disagreement.
White House reporter Maggie Haberman once derided his “gratuitous jabs at a former employer,” while political and investigative reporter Nick Confessore characterized a tweet criticizing the paper’s 2016 coverage as “a cheap shot masquerading as something else.”
Silver, however, has not been deterred. In recent weeks, he took issue with reporter Peter Baker’s analysis of Robert Mueller’s testimony as “not the blockbuster Democrats had sought,” by grousing, “Why not just report the news and not reach for a weird like 5th order conditional/counterfactual narrative.” He also poured some gasoline on the embers of the dispute over Times deputy Washington editor Jonathan Weisman’s allegedly racist tweet. And he “sparked a social media furor,” as the Columbia Journalism Review noted, by being the first to call attention to the Times’ now-infamous headline on President Donald Trump’s response to shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.
“Not sure “TRUMP URGES UNITY VS. RACISM” is how I would have framed the story,” Silver wrote in a tweet that was seized on by 2020 Democratic candidates and others critical of the headline. Editors changed the headline, which Baquet told staffers Monday was “a fucking mess.”
“I do think a lot of NYTs problems (and to be clear, there are *many* things they do very well along with some *serious* problems) are born out of arrogance; thinking they’re the most important voice in the room,” Silver wrote after the headline blow-up. “Nothing engenders that sort of arrogance like a lack of competition.”
When it comes to data analysis, at least, Silver offers competition of his own via FiveThirtyEight, the former Times site that is now under the auspices of ABC. This summer, a Silver-generated dispute over how the Times analyzes polling data has morphed into the “Battle of the Nates,” as the wonky Twitter beef has been dubbed. In one recent skirmish, Silver told the younger Cohn that he hoped he’d “grow out of” a phase of calling things “simultaneously a prediction and not a prediction.”
Cohn and Silver declined requests for interviews. But in emails to POLITICO, Silver praised Cohn’s work, while dismissing suggestions his criticism of the Times is motivated by a rivalry or personal grudge.
“Media criticism is a core part of what I do,” Silver said. “I founded FiveThirtyEight 11 years ago because I had a lot of critiques of how the American press covers elections.”
“Given the extremely prominent and influential place that the Times holds in coverage of American politics, any media critiques are naturally going to invoke the Times frequently,” he continued. “I think they’d do well to take those criticisms to heart instead of constantly accusing their critics of having ulterior motives or acting in bad faith.”
Nonetheless, New York Times spokesperson told POLITICO: “We don’t always agree with Nate but he sometimes offers smart criticism of our work and we value that, it makes us better.”
The Times’ history with Silver dates from 2010, when it took over FiveThirtyEight under a three-year agreement. His posts were a traffic-driver for the Times’s site and — like Cohn — he used polling data to raise provocative questions about elections, such as his Nov. 2011 Times magazine cover story asking, “Is Obama Toast?” Obama wasn’t, and Silver went on to correctly call all 50 states ahead of the 2012 re-election.
As his star rose in the media world, Silver, who was based in New York, developed a strained relationship with the Times’s political reporters in Washington. Former Times public editor Margaret Sullivan noted in 2013 how Silver didn’t “really fit into the Times culture”and Silver has accused the paper’s political reporters of being “incredibly hostile and incredibly unhelpful.”
Silver had fans in Times management, but the paper couldn’t meet his demands to stay.
“When Nate Silver was negotiating a new, richer contract, his lawyer told me that his client was ‘the prettiest girl at the prom,’” former Times executive editor Jill Abramson wrote in her 2018 book, “Merchants of Truth.” “I told him, perhaps echoing the past, ‘The Times is always the prettiest girl.’”
Abramson told POLITICO that Silver sought funding for about 20 “stat mavens in different areas, including sports and weather,” which “would have required a huge investment,” from the paper. In July 2013, Silver decamped to ESPN, which bought the FiveThirtyEight site and provided Silver with resources to build a data-driven newsroom. ABC News — which, like ESPN, is owned by Disney — acquired FiveThirtyEight last year.
The Times rebounded after Silver’s departure by hiring Cohn, another young data wiz, in Nov. 2013 and launching The Upshot five months later.
Both Silver and Cohn came under scrutiny during the 2016 election for underestimating Donald Trump in the Republican primary. On Election Day, The Upshot put Hillary Clinton’s chances of winning the electoral college at 85%, while FiveThirtyEight was less bullish than most election models at 71%.
Following the 2016 shocker, Silver published an 11-part opus: “The Real Story Of 2016: What reporters — and lots of data geeks, too — missed about the election, and what they’re still getting wrong.” And the Times, Silver wrote, “is a good place to look for where coverage went wrong.”
While the Times was Silver’s primary target, he suggested the paper’s political coverage was emblematic of broader problems in 2016, such as journalist groupthink, access-driven reporting, and a misplaced notion of Clinton’s inevitability. In the Trump era, Silver has accused the Times of normalizing neo-Nazism and being beholden to White House access.
On Tuesday, Silver suggested the Times is “too self-conscious about trying to prove” that it’s not part of the resistance to Trump that it will “likely worsen their journalism” and critics such as the president “will accuse them all of it all the same.”
And then there’s the running dispute with Cohn, who wrote on July 19 how Trump’s “Electoral College edge could grow in 2020.” Despite Trump’s low national polls, Cohn pointed to the importance of a potential “tipping-point state,” like Wisconsin, where the president’s favorability is higher than average.
Silver argued that Cohn’s analysis of Trump’s Electoral College path is premature based on the polling currently available. “I’m pretty skeptical that we can say much right now about whether it will be larger, smaller or nonexistent in 2020,” he tweeted.
Cohn acknowledged the map can change before the 2020 election, but responded: “The piece is plainly describing the president’s current standing, and goes to unusual lengths to explain that it can change.”
“I think it’s kind of BS to lean really heavily into a particular takeaway in top 80 percent of the article, not to mention the headline/lead/social promotion/etc., and then to introduce the caveats in (literally!!) the 42nd paragraph,” Silver responded. The spat resumed nearly a week later, with Silver accusing Cohn of cherry-picking data to support his hypothesis about an election 16 months away.
Dr. Rachel Bitecofer, assistant director of the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University, and who has analyzed the 2020 race using her own election model, told POLITICO that both Silver and Cohn had legitimate critiques.
But, she added, there seemed “to be a personal hostility that was coming through that was more than about methodology.” She said it looked like Silver was criticizing Cohn “for doing the same type of piece that Nate Silver has written many times.”
In an email to POLITICO, Silver praised Cohn for being “exceptionally good at what he does” and said that he doesn’t think “there are actually many philosophical differences” between them. He said “a lot of things that boil down to what you might call matters of taste,” such as “how certain things are described or when to apply a certain method to a certain problem.”
“Practitioners often feel passionately about matters like these,” he added, “but I don’t know that they’re terribly newsworthy or important in the grand scheme of things.”
Yet Silver didn’t let the dispute go. Days later, he offered a mocking subtweet in response to new polls: “bUt I WaS ToLd ThAt TrUmP LoOkEd StRoNg In ThE TiPPiNg PoInT StAtEs aNd HaS a BiGgEr eLeCtoRaL CoLLeGe AdVaNtAgE tHaN iN 2o16.”
New York magazine’s Jonathan Chait, one of the many journalists following the recurring Twitter spat, responded: “At this point, the best advice I can give you, as a fan of both, is to settle this with a straight-out fistfight.”

No More Parent Trap: What To Do When It Comes to Parental Leave
When I first started at IMPACT, I was one of the oldest employees at the ripe old age of 29.
We were a group of hungry, smart, young professionals on our way to building something great.
Then we hired Angela Myrtetus -- who is now our Director of Strategy -- and she was the first employee to have kids. Whoa.
Fast forward to today, three years later, we’ve tripled our team size and, consequently, significantly raised our median age.
Our hungry, smart, young professionals have not only matured, some have also married and are ready to start families of their own.
We have a flexible work environment, so it was never a question if, as an organization, we would support our employees who are (or want to be) parents, but, for the first time, we’re starting to have to figure out the whole parental leave thing -- and it's certainly a challenge.
As a leader, this is keeping me up at night.
Let me unpack that and why every leader should be thinking about parental leave right now.
Why Is Parental Leave Such a Big Deal Right Now?
When I interviewed at IMPACT, one of my first questions was about the maternity leave policy.
I was coming from a professional employment organization, known for its world-class benefits, and knew going to work for a small inbound marketing agency would mean leaving behind my great insurance rate and a three-month, 60% salary paid maternity leave.
I was pleasantly surprised when IMPACT told me they were going to offer not only maternity leave but paternity leave for two months at 100% pay.
This benefit is part of what made it worthwhile for me to relocate from Texas to Connecticut instead of accepting a remote position with another agency. It’s that big of a deal, folks.
During a time in your life that can be so amazing, yet so stressful, to only get 60% pay seemed kind of crappy.
Even at 60% pay, I worried about the “what ifs” on making bills, considering I was the breadwinner in my family.
What’s worse is more than half of women in the United States get absolutely nothing.
And we wonder why there’s a glass ceiling…
Taking a step back, we know that only 15% of employees worldwide say they are engaged at work.
However, my boss and IMPACT COO, Chris Duprey, spoke about this and the movement of inbound leadership to remedy it at IMPACT Live last month.
Inbound leadership is operating from a “how can I help” perspective, obsessed with the success of our people and teams -- leading to a positive and lasting impact on the organization.
With that definition in mind, how is your organization supporting your team’s success if you’re not offering them time to be with their newborn with a decent living wage?
The fact of the matter is, if you want to be an inbound organization, you need to offer parental benefits to your team.
Otherwise, you’ll miss out on building a team of diverse in-age, highly engaged, skilled people.
Okay, So You Have Parental Leave Benefits. Now What?
This is where we’re at right now -- asking, "Now what?"
We’ve had one person go on parental leave earlier this year, and although everyone involved did their best to get everything covered, we missed a lot of steps.
Now we have two people in my department (our services organization who work directly with our clients) with parental leave in the very near future -- although, not at the same time, at least!

I’m not going to lie -- this was not a planned article for me to write today.
I started writing this about an hour from publish time because I have spent a good portion of my morning researching how other companies cover when their employees go on leave.
This was the last thing on my mind the last few nights as I fell asleep, and the first thing on my mind starting my day.
I want our team to feel 100% supported, both the people taking leave and the ones working in their absence.
I had a couple of open hours this morning to research vs. re-inventing the wheel, so I took advantage of it.
But the more I researched, the less helpful information I found.
In fact, what I did find just made me angry.
In the last two decades, the rate at which women take leave, whether paid or unpaid, is the same. Men have tripled, but it was a marginal percentage to begin with.
That means we, as employers, have not solved the problem at-large. Throwing money at the person taking leave isn’t enough.
The bigger consequence that any leader should realize is that we’re not in a down economy anymore.
It’s a job seeker’s market, yet we are offering the same old, poor quality parental leave benefits and not solving for the rest of the team.
In addition to even offering parental leave benefits, leaders need to figure out how to balance maintaining and growing our companies while providing benefits employees expect.
Simply spreading out the responsibilities to other team members doesn’t always work.
You risk burning out your team, and I’m sure you certainly don’t want your internal stakeholders -- or clients if you’re an agency leader -- to feel any of the friction of that balancing act.
Plus, what if you have more than one person on a team go on parental leave at the same time?
That’s a very real possibility -- and vulnerability -- to solve for.
This Is a Worthy Problem to Solve
Although the United States is well behind in parental benefits, this isn’t an unsolvable problem. How has every other industrialized country figured this out?
I don’t have the answer, but if you’re a leader finding yourself in the same position as me, this is a problem worth solving, especially when you consider the job market today.
And if you aren’t thinking about this, you should be.
We’re going to have to figure this out ourselves as an inbound community, and need all the help we can get.

I remember my first opportunity to photograph a young woman in her swimsuit, she was probably only 18 at the time. I knew very little about lighting and soon became aware the power of her lamp on the table was more powerful than my cube flash and just her legs were showing in the photo, took me nearly 2 weeks to confess. That was the beginning of my taking photography serious. Started reading materials and soon became interested in black and white and after obtaining my first true 35mm camera, a Pentax, I was soon on my way. Joined military in 1968 and while stationed in Turkey, took lots of pictures. Next tour in Okinawa, provided me an opportunity to learn from the base photographer and became interested in shooting slides and processing. After my return to the Illuminating company, I introduced myself to the in-house darkroom specialist, Master’s Degree from RIT, and he allowed me to observe him at his work. When he decided to retire, I was given the job. Had a large enlarger that used 10x10” negatives and also I could convert it to a copy camera which allowed me to produce images up to 8’ on 40” wide paper. My next chance was at NASA started in black and white department but later progressed to processing all film from 1985 to 1997 before digital imaging eliminated the job. I am re-energized after this research to improve on my photography. The same problems of racism have also hindered me from advancing because I had no degree they felt that I could work for less. I too loved to shoot landscapes, models, weddings, parties and whatever came my way. I thoroughly enjoyed the research as it came to show me how little progress has been made in race relations and social issues. Things seem to be getting worse instead of better. This research reflected the numerous times Gordon would approach agencies unannounced and impressed them with his work which allowed him opportunities to have his work published and appreciated. His primary goal was to expose the injustices around the world concerning the poor and less fortunate. His choice of weapons were his camera and the pen, which later became the title of one his autobiographies. One of my favorite quotes by Gordon was “The important thing is not so much what you suffered – or didn’t suffer – but how you put that learning to use”. History: Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks was born in Fort Scott, Kansas on November 20, 1912 and died of cancer on March 7, 2006 at the age of 93. His father was Andrew Jackson Parks a dirt farmer his mother Sarah Ross a maid. Gordon was considered a creative genius as he excelled in many exploits; photographer, filmmaker, author, and composer. The youngest of fifteen children, Gordon rose from a childhood of poverty in a segregated society and used his talents to better the world around him. When his mother died in 1928, he was only 15 years old.. The family was bound by Sarah’s strong conviction that dignity and hard work could overcome the bigotry they faced. His mother’s final request was to send him north to Minnesota to live with his sister, and before the flowers on her grave wilted, his father put him on a train. “Just follow your mother’s teachings and you will be alright” was his father’s departing words. Shortly after his move, his brother-in-law evicted him and he was homeless in the 30 below temperatures and with no job. For nearly a week he spent his nights riding the trolley line from St. Paul to Minneapolis and back again. He barely survived by playing piano in a brothel and washing dishes at a dingy restaurant. Parks attended a segregated elementary school and in high school he attended was integrated they maintained discriminatory policies toward black students. They could not attend any social functions nor compete in sports. He quit high school after the Great Depression set in. While working as a waiter on the North Coast Limited, a transcontinental train that ran between St. Paul and Chicago and Seattle. In a magazine left on the train he found pictures taken by photographers of the Farm Security Administration, FSA set up by President Roosevelt to aid submarginal farmers. These images depicted “stark, tragic images of human beings caught up in the confusion of poverty. He began to read more about photography and to visit museums, to study the work of others. Soon he bought his first camera: a $7.50 Voightlender Brilliant, a 35mm. The camera was to become his weapon against poverty and racism. Parks’s first photographs immediately attracted the attention of the Eastman Kodak Company which sponsored a showing of Park’s pictures in the company show windows. While still in Minnesota Park’s approached Frank Murphy, who owned a women’s store in St. Paul to photograph their fashions. When asked if he could, he lied. Even though he had no samples of his work, his wife decided to give him a chance. When she asked him how many models he wanted, he said three models and six outfits. The following evening he arrived with lights and a highly sophisticated camera that he borrowed, and nervously went to work. Not only was Madeline and her husband impressed, but so was Gordon, until after developing the film, all but one exposure was double-exposed. Owing honesty, two mornings later when the owners arrived a large print of the one good exposure stood in front of the store on an easel. She was really excited and invited him in to view the others. After confessing, she asked him would all of the others would have been as good, he stated “that’s probably the worst”. She gave him another chance and the pictures were so impressive that Joe Louis’s wife, Marva Louis urged him to move to Chicago, where he photographed fashions and did portraits for both black and white clients. In Chicago he documented the devastating effects of poverty. When Parks won a Julius Rosenwald Fellowship in 1941, the first ever awarded in photography, he arranged for an apprenticeship at the FSA in Washington, DC. Parks and his family were not prepared for the racism encountered upon their arrival. Roy Emerson Stryker, his supervisor suggested with Ella Watson, an African Ameerican cleaning woman who worked in the building. Parks took a series of photos of Watson and her family. The most famous image was of her standing in front of an American flag with a mop in one hand and a broom in the other. Later, titled “ American Gothic” which referenced Grant Wood’s 1930 painting of the same name. This was Parks’s first official FSA photo and became one of photography’s iconic images. Parks was in an angry mood when he asked the woman to pose, having earlier been refused service at a clothing store, a movie theater and a restaurant. He was the first African American photographer to work for Life and Vogue magazines and the first to work for the Office of War Information and the Farm Security Administration. Gordon’s son, Gordon Parks Jr, was also a dedicated photographer, but decided on changing his name to Gordon Rogers, because his accomplishments have been mistakenly credited to his father. When Gordon was making the Learning Tree, Gordon Jr .worked as a cameraman and in 1972 he directed Superfly 1972and other films during the blaxploitation films of the early 70’s. In 1979 tragedy struck as he had just landed an independent production company, died in a plane crash in an aborted takeoff on the runway of the Nairobi Airport. Even in death, reports on radio and newspaper accounts had mistakenly reported that it was Gordon Sr., and bibliographical accounts still often confuse the two men In 1933 when invited to join an orchestra .Parks moved back to Harlem, yet the group disbanded almost immediately and once again was without a job. After making a few deliveries for a dope dealer, he joined the Civilian Conservative Corps (CCC) planting trees and clearing camping grounds and beaches until 1934. Soon Parks married Sally Alvis and moved back to Minneapolis and had three children, Gordon Parks Jr. Toni, and David. Gordon’s book “Half Past Autumn” is a retrospective compilation of his life’s work starting with the early years and other photographs of Harlem Gangs, Fashion and crime. In 1943 southern senators were upset with the numerous files crammed with America’s poor and dispossessed amounted in the government’s indictment of itself and was soon abolished and absorbed into the Office of War Information. In the second year of World War II, unrest was building in black military quarters when distinguished leader Colonel Benjamin O. Davis was charged with the black 99th Pursuit Squadron where they were trained and sent overseas. Then later transferred to Selfridge Field near Detroit, Michigan. Soon Gordon was assigned as war correspondent. His duties was to cover the group in training and during flights. After a quick breakfast, at 6:00, was soon airborne with young black fighters getting ready for a fight with Adolph Hitler’s Lultwaffle. Fashion In 1944 while continuing to work for the Office of War information, he decided to take a cheap room at the YMCA and began to look for work. He abruptly entered office of Harper’s Bazaar, but was told that being a Hearst organization, forbid Negroes from being hired. Soon afterwards, Roy Striker advised him to go to Vogue. He was selected to photograph a collection of the season’s finest evening gowns. Five years later he continued to appear in Vogue. In 1948 after several good years at Vogue, his courage led him to Life magazine and after viewing his work, asked him what he would like to do, he replied, fashion and gang wars up in Harlem. While searching for a way to gain access to a gang, he stumbled on Red Jackson, a 16 year old Harlem gang leader. When he mentioned that he want to photograph his gang. He offered as a suggestion to drive him around in his Buick which convinced Red to allow him to photograph his gang. Three months later when preparing his essay for publication in Life Magazine. He reclaimed the negative and cut it into pieces because of the trust grown between them. At times Gordon suggested that there was a better way of life for him. But Red was too caught up in the Harlem gang life. Forty years later while at Penn Station they once again met and Red went on for an hour rehashing the fearful days of his youth. Upon parting, Red suggested they could go back up there and save those kids in Harlem. Fashion led him once again to Paris during the 50’s, where his photos were admired of the poor, and the different scenery he captured. Gordon published 14 books: Flash Photography, Camera Portraits, The Learning Tree, A Choice of Weapons, A Poet and his Camera, Born Black, Whispers of Intimate things, In Love, Moments without Proper Names, Flavio, To Smile in Autumn, Shannon, Voices in the Mirror, Arias in Silence. From the Arias in Silence is a compilation of his later works which combined his artistry with poetry, water color and his addition of digital images. Each image expressed the need for him to accept life gracefully – without trembling at the inevitability of his departure. SUMMATION: Following my research, I found it interesting that he died of cancer in 2006 at the age of 93 which gives me strength and I will attempt to read whatever I can get my hands on. “What I Wish They Knew”: 5 Answers from a Government Data Scientist
One of the goals of this blog is to bridge the worlds of tech and government: I believe we can do so much more by working together, yet we often don’t understand each other deeply enough to begin. I will be starting the “What I Wish They Knew” series, which features people who are familiar with both these communities.

How did you get into Government Data Science?
I’ve had a strong interest in mathematics and related quantitative fields like statistics and computer science for as long as I can remember, and studied math at Princeton as an undergrad. [NB: Kenneth’s mathematics blog can be found here.]
I began my career in the Singapore public service, hoping to give back to society in the small ways I could. While I was at the Ministries of Defence and Environment, most of my work did not involve any advanced math or data analysis.
I missed the intellectual challenge of quantitative thinking, and started taking online courses on the side. Andrew Ng’s “Machine Learning” course on Coursera first piqued my interest in data science. I learnt how we can use a small toolbox of algorithms to extract a whole lot of information from data, and I thought to myself, “How cool would it be if I could use some of these techniques in my work?”
Fortunately, a unit in Government was being set up to do just that: use state-of-the-art data analysis techniques to inform policy decision-making. I joined the Government Data Science unit in 2015 as a consultant. My work experience in policy and my quantitative undergraduate training put me in a rare position to understand the mindsets of both the policy officer and the data scientist. As such, I felt that I was an effective translator between the 2 parties.
How about an example – what is one meaningful thing you did in Government Data Science?
An agency was very concerned about congestion during peak hours at the checkpoint between Singapore and Malaysia. Understanding cargo traffic patterns could help them design policies to reduce congestion. All they had was tens of millions of “permit data” entries, which captured the time that the cargo truck carrying the permit passed through a checkpoint, the industry code and value of the goods carried. I worked with the agency to define useful problem statements to shape the direction of analysis. One example: what are the top 5 industries moving cargo during peak hours? (Since policy interventions would be done at an industry-level).
Next, since each truck could hold multiple permits and the number of trucks was what we cared about, we went through a (non-trivial) process of turning “permit data” into “truck data”. We were able to identify the top industries moving cargo during peak hours, and further narrowed this group to those who were moving cargo on the busiest roads. We were also able to develop hypotheses on what influenced industry behaviour.
After completing the analysis, I shaped the narrative of our presentation in a way that delivered impactful policy insights, ruthlessly cutting down on unnecessary details. This is often the most painful part of the process for a data scientist – it’s so tempting to want to show ALL the great analysis we did.
After dozens of hours of work, there was nothing more satisfying in seeing the audience’s facial expressions saying, in effect, “before I was blind, now I see”! They never had a picture of the cargo traffic patterns until our analysis was done, and could now act upon it to improve congestion.
What is one thing you wish non-data scientists knew about working with data scientists?
That good data analysis requires significant collaboration between the data scientist and you, the domain expert.
Some people view the relationship between the domain expert and the data scientist as follows:
Domain expert gives data scientist a bunch of Excel files.
Data scientist crunches the numbers and churns out a report or presentation 3 months later. After all, the data scientist knows everything about data and that’s what we are paying them to do, right?
Nothing could be further from the truth! Domain expertise can speed up the data analysis process tremendously and direct it meaningfully, resulting in greater value from the project. Let me give two examples of this.
First, explaining the data to the data scientist, down to what each column means and how the data was collected, will save him/her much second-guessing angst. For example, if the patient check-out time was 18:00:00, does it mean that the person checked out at 6pm, or does it mean that the clinic closed at 6pm, and so everyone who hadn’t checked out yet was given a standard check-out time? Explaining the data will also give the data scientist a better sense of which variables are of greater importance and deserve more attention. In the example above, what does “checking-out” mean anyway, and is it significant?
Second, domain experts can pick up on insights that would escape data scientists. For example, a data scientist finds that Chromosome 21 seems to have an impact on a health outcome. Is that expected? Does it confirm some of the other hunches that we have? Or is it something completely unexpected, that suggests that the model is wrong? These are questions that a data scientist is unlikely to have any intuition about. However, with feedback from the domain expert, the data scientist can quickly decide to pursue or drop lines of inquiry.
As a policy-maker, what is one thing you wish more data scientists paid attention to?
That data analysis is not for the data scientist, but for the policy-maker (or client). As such, good data analysis always puts findings and insights in the proper context.
Consider the sentence: “Our prediction model for which patients will be re-admitted over the next 6 months is 34.56% more accurate than the existing model.” Upon seeing this sentence, several questions come to mind:
What do you mean by accuracy? Is the measure for accuracy that you are using appropriate? (See this http://ift.tt/163XkbV for a whole zoo of accuracy measures.)
56% seems overly precise: can we really compare performance down to 2 decimal places? (35% might be better.)
Does 35% more accuracy translate to a meaningful difference? For example, will this allow us to tailor our services better to 100,000 patients, or 10 patients? (If possible, relate the finding to something the policy-maker cares about, like dollars or man-hours saved.)
Is this even a meaningful thing to predict?? (Hopefully, the domain expert would have said so. See answer to question 2.)
Good data analysis also provides enough detail to illuminate, but not too much till it confuses. For example, saying nothing about the modeling process could make me wonder whether you did your homework in choosing the most appropriate model (and whether I should have spent all that money hiring you). At the other extreme, I will not appreciate going through slide after slide of raw SAS/R output.
At this point I cannot overstate the importance of appropriate data visualisation. These visualisations have to be thought through: good charts clarify, poor ones confuse. Unfortunately, it’s a lot easier to make the latter. (See this for examples not to follow.)

5. What is your hope for the field of data science?
The economist Ronald Coase famously said “Torture the data, and it will confess to anything.” In an era of subjective reporting and “fake news”, this concern is more pertinent than ever.
My hope is that the general population will have enough statistical knowledge so that they can call a bluff when they see one, and demand quantitative evidence for decisions their leaders make. To this end, I hope to see reforms in statistics education at the high-school level so that it becomes a subject that people feel is relevant and interesting, rather than abstract and theoretical (which is often how it is taught today).
