thinking abt totk and oot and how we, the audience, recognise rauru's name as the sage of light in oot, but in totk meet a new rauru, who was both the first king of hyrule, but also a sage of light. timeline-speaking, was the rauru of oot just coincidentally the sage of light and shared his name with the first one? or was it his fate, and his parents named him accordingly? or was he a history nerd who chose that name willingly? makes me wonder......

Ocarina of Time
V: The Heir (pre-game/child timeline)
Zelda is but a child, in training to be the next ruler of Hyrule. She is just beginning to come into her powers, including prophetic dreams and magic that Impa is doing her best to train her to use properly.
V: Seven Years Lost (OoT, Link’s missing years)
Princess Zelda could not afford to be found by the newly minted King Ganondorf. Desperate to protect her, Impa helped her learn to craft a new persona, hidden within illusionary magics to appear different enough that she would never be found.
This was the birth of Sheik.
Sheik was trained in the ways of the Sheikah by Impa, a quick study that grew up to be all lean muscle in silence and shadows. In a way, he was reborn.
V: The Hero Returns (adult timeline)
There were no words for the relief Sheik felt at the end of seven years, when the Hero of Time was released back into the world. Though he didn’t often get to see Link, those moments always warmed him. To finally feel the sages begin to awaken, to feel things finally start to change for the better, was almost surreal. He only wished he could do more.
It felt like a waste, being trained to fight but unable to truly join Link’s side, even though he knew why he had to be kept separate. For now, he would continue to support Link from the shadows.
V: Picking up the Pieces (post-game)
After Link defeated Ganondorf, an uneasy peace descends on Hyrule. For Sheik, this also means having to return to being Princess Zelda, a weight that has never weighed heavier on his shoulders.
It is important work, being Zelda. Being the Princess and becoming the Queen Hyrule needs with the death of her father, trying to put a ruined country back together while helping the Zora and Gorons, and trying to create a fragile peace with the remaining Gerudos.
But in her heart of hearts, she can’t help but miss the freedom of being Sheik. If Link hasn’t gone back to the past, he is often sought out just to try and recapture the different sort of strength and confidence of being Sheik.

V: Heir of Revolution
Finally of age, Zel has moved to the forefront of the revolution, no longer merely a symbol of the stolen crown and their hope for retaking their homeland. They’ve continued to learn from the advisors that had escaped, but feel infinitely more comfortable with a sword at their hip and a bow and quiver at their back. Diplomacy got their father killed. Diplomacy will be for the aftermath. For now… they’re ready to take it back by force.

Apparently there’s some confusion on Breath of the Wild’s place in the Zelda...
Of course, most of this confusion, from what I can tell, is coming from a lot of theories that came out before the game. There’s nothing the matter with that, it’s only natural that people start thinking about these things the moment they get any information (I didn’t but I was avoiding spoilers like they were the bleedin plague). Anyway, now that the game is out and I can say I’ve played through it all, I think  the answer is pretty obvious.
There are no doubt some confusing things when it comes to the timeline of Breath of the Wild. For one, there are races existing in it that have never been seen existing together at the same time. We all had assumed that the Rito had evolved from the Zoras and were named after the famous princess because there were no Zoras in Wind Waker and that’s the only time we’ve seen Rito. Furthermore, the presence of Korks in place of the Kikori is something else we haven’t seen since Wind Waker. Is that it then? Does that mean BotW is in the WW timeline? Umm, no, please quickly take a stamina potion, hold your horses until they are all tamed and get them to a stable as quickly as possible before jumping to conclusions.
The truth is that the game overwhelmingly obviously takes place in the Twilight Princess timeline. Why? Because it is the only timeline canonically referenced to have happened in the game. During one of the memory sequences Zelda is performing a ceremony dubbing Link as the Hero of Hyrule and she directly mentions the hero’s resurrection in three previous games: Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess. There are references to other timelines through the loot to gained by using amiibo, but amiibo isn’t canon…I mean I admit that they aren’t confirmed not canon but I can’t see treasure chests falling from sky canon—also that would mean the spirit of Ganondorf (through the amiibo) helping you on your quest to kill himself which would make zero sense unless Ganondorf like, was disgusted about what Calamity Ganon had become and wanted to kill it with fire…but like, Ganondorf doesn’t exactly seem the type to care.
In that case though, how do all of these things that fit more with Wind Waker if this is in the Twilight Princess timeline. Well, I believe I have an explanation that might fit—Breath of the Wild actually takes place around the same time as Wind Waker, but in the Twilight Princess timeline. That’s why the races are the same, the same time has passed and so evolution has naturally taken its course in the same way it did in the Wind Waker timeline. At the same time though, isn’t Breath of the Wild supposed to be far in the future…like FAR in the future? Well, yes, but isn’t Wind Waker like really FAR in the future as well? Remembering back to the tapestry at the beginning of Wind Waker, after the defeat of Ganon at the end of Ocarina of Time, the Hyrule that is left behind when Link returns to the past lives in prosperity for a very long time, until the day when Ganon finally breaks the seal and returns to the world. Now let’s actually take a look at this part of the tapestry, don’t you notice anything a little bit funny about Ganon? He’s…well…really big, and kind of spectral, ghost like, etc. Now who does this remind us of? Are you thinking about Calamity Ganon? I know I am! Furthermore, the style of this tapestry and the style of the tapestry in Breath of the Wild depicting the first coming of Calamity Ganon are of an incredibly similar style—a style that doesn’t really appear in other parts of the games—even the tapestry at the beginning of Skyward Sword has an art style that is quite different. Many things would imply that these two tapestries were created at a period of history…but in two different timelines. In one of them, of course, Hyrule was ready for the coming of Ganon—they’ve found a hero, constructed great mechanisms and successfully seal the beast away…but in the Wind Waker timeline…something else happens; for some reason, despite the pattern of resurrection existing between the hero, the princess, and demise, there isn’t a hero—at least not one capable of defeating Ganon. This begs the question, why, and I believe it all comes down to the Sheikah.
The Sheikah are continuously proven to play a crucial role in the history of Hyrule. They’re the ones who record the legends and prophecies that, among other things, keep the memory of the threat of Ganon alive. In Breath of the Wild, it is the powerful Sheikah nation that is said to have built the Guardians and Divine Beasts which are essential to defeating Calamity Ganon the first time he appears, but now consider the ending of Ocarina of Time—the one in the future that leads up to Wind Waker—there are no Sheikah. Why? Because the last one left, Impa, is currently serving as the Shadow Sage. With the last of the Sheikah, eh…preoccupied, there is simply nobody to carry on the dying Sheikah race. Besides, there is also a strong theory that all the sages are actually dead in Ocarina of Time, so if Impa is dead then there is definitely no way for the Sheikah race to continue. Now, people may say that the Sheikah are equally doomed in the timeline which Link goes back to at the end of OoT, but that’s simply not true. The fact that Impaz exists in Twilight Princess proves that the Sheikah have lived on at least a little bit after Ocarina of Time, and proves that as long as there is one Sheikah remaining, the line can be continued on somehow; thus, making it possible for the Sheikah to become a powerful nation by the time of the tapestry in Breath of the Wild. Yet, as we’ve already discussed, in the Wind Waker timeline, they’re all gone. Remember, the Sheikah didn’t just play a role in sealing away Calamity Ganon in the BotW tapestry, they’re also the keepers of legends and prophecies. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense that the existence of a Sheikah tribe in one timeline versus them being extinct in another would make all of the differenced. Ganon’s return in the Wind Waker tapestry is such a…well…calamity because nobody expected it. There was nobody to tell them it was going to happen soon because the people who were in charge of keeping track of things like that were all dead. Thus, a hero was never found, no preparations were made, and when a Ganon strong enough to break through the gates of the sacred realm through brute force appeared on the scene, absolutely nobody was ready, and the world was left at the brink of ruin.
We know what happens next, answering the prayers of the people the Goddesses seal Hyrule away and sink it beneath the ocean. Eventually, the kingdom fades into myth. At this point, I don’t think there is that much of a question as to how Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild are connected—in both, it takes Ganon 10,000 years to break the seal at which point, both BotW and WW take place simultaneously. When you think about it, even the position of Hyrule castle in Wind Waker looks similar to the Hyrule Castle, surrounded by a similar giant mote in Breath of the Wild. We can’t completely tell the BotW and the Wind Waker topography are the same because you don’t really get to explore Hyrule in Wind Waker, but the wide expanse of a field, surrounded by mountains on all sides definitely fits the bill and even if the topography is somewhat different, well, in WW the kingdom has been frozen in time for thousands of years so it’s not like there’s been much erosion or mountain building going on. There is, however, one final hole…and I admit it is something that is bothering me—Ganondorf. In Wind Waker…the final boss is a human Ganondorf…not a Calamity Ganon. This, however, actually makes sense. Why? Because in the Twilight Princess’s timeline, Ganondorf’s body is dead. Now, his spirit lives on, that much of obvious—in fact, the moment I saw Ganondorf apparently “die” at the end of TP I started to call bull. Like, the Triforce of Power can’t just decide to leave Ganondorf. It doesn’t work like that. What instead is happening at the end is that Ganon’s body is killed, but Ganon’s soul is still tied to the Triforce of Power and thus survives. The Triforce of Power returns to the sacred realm, as is its natural state, but takes Ganon’s soul with it. Over time, Ganon becomes more powerful and eventually breaks through the gates to the sacred realm in the form of Calamity Ganon, but is immediately defeated as the tapestry shows. In the Wind Waker timeline, however, we see that Ganondorf’s body has lived on. So why does Ganon appear the way he does when he returns in the Wind Waker tapestry? Well…because that giant specter…that very essence of malic itself which has become known as Calamity Ganon is his most powerful form. In order to break out of the sacred realm, Ganondorf uses all the power he has gained over his time imprisoned there and breaks free using the all-powerful form of Calamity Ganon. Actually it is said that Dark Beast Ganon is more powerful but taking on that form sacrifices Ganondorf of his sanity and ability to control himself, something he would be unwilling to do, besides, the BotW tapestry proves that Calamity Ganon, a form which is still capable of thought and will, is powerful enough to break through the gates to the sacred realm. Thus, in the Wind Waker Tapestry, although Ganondorf does still have his body, he initially uses his Calamity Ganon form to break out of the sacred realm and into Hyrule. Then, after laying Hyrule to waste, he returns to his mortal form in order to rule over Hyrule for himself, because really, a human body is much easier to handle than being spectral incarnation of darkness itself (additional, speaking of spectral incarnations, it may be that Ganondorf used a less powerful version of his Calamity form when convincing Zant he was a god because like, the whole cloud thing and all). Ganondorf is then sealed away in this form and, save the puppet Ganon boss battle, continues to take this form until the end of Wind Waker.
So that’s basically it. Breath of the Wild actually fits pretty well into the timeline and actually fills in a lot of holes—like, how the heck does Ganondorf dying at the end of Twilight Princess make any sense having the Triforce of Power doesn’t work like that. As one more counterargument, I’ve heard many people theorize that Calamity Ganon isn’t connected to Ganondorf at all, but Urbosa, the Gerudo champion even says that she is looking forward to destroying Ganon because she heard that Calamity Ganon once took the form of a Gerudo….so like…naw, they’re the same thing.
If you read this, hey, well done, you either have more patience than 90% of the internet, or you really care about this topic. I hope it made sense. I really feel strongly about this theory and even if some of the ins and outs are a bit odd, I truly believe that the existence of Breath of the Wild existing sometime after Twilight Princess is irrefutable—I’m even willing to admit it might not be exactly parallel with Wind Waker temporally, although I think it’s possible and would explain all the different races appearing together having a similar evolutionary path. Zora’s not being in Wind Waker still is a bit confusing, but seeing that they are fish people living in a giant ocean while we are stuck to the islands, even if they did still exist, their failure to make an appearance may not be all that surprising. I had a lot of time writing this all up, and I hope someone got something out of this. See ya’ll later…or not…because this is the internet.
Tl;dr: BotW takes place after TP in the TP timeline. For more information, read above.

My Inner Life Part 13 - By the Power of Cliches! (Happy April Fools Day!)
When we last left off, Link and Jenna contaminated the Kokiri pond with some post-war snoo-snoo and, in bigger news, Jenna finally birthed out Link Jr. with help from the royal healer and her apprentice, the princess formerly known as Zelda. I wonder what delightful things await the first family of crappy fanfiction.
I don’t own My Inner Life (not that I would want to in the first place) nor the Legend of Zelda series.
A few days later word had spread through Hyrule that Link and I just had a baby. (Damn you Hylian tabloids!) When the King heard that Link had a son he was just delighted. He was going to have a blessing ceremony for the baby when I was well enough to get out of bed. (”Where we will sacrifice him to appease our Hylian goddesses!”) Link spent the time I was in bed caring for me and our son. For the first few days we were keeping little Link in the room with us. It was safer and easier when he needed to be fed. Since I was breast-feeding him it was not much for me to get up and get him out of his cradle. There was the chair in the corner for me to use during feeding time.
I was surprised that for the most part Link Jr. slept through most nights. (Oh really? ‘Cause last I checked, they’re noisy as all get out) But there were a few times where he cried in the middle of the night to be changed or fed. But I was glad to have this little miracle. He was my pride and joy. I finally had a family. A family to call my own. (”Because my other family just wasn’t cutting it!”) When I was well enough to leave the bed we sent word to the Royal Family that I was ready. Two days later, we had the blessing ceremony.
The King had everyone in Hyrule attend. He wanted everyone to meet the “Hero of Time’s” first-born son. (I’m pretty sure Link will be delighted to have Dead Hand meet his little boy!) Also his name was to be announced to everyone after he was blessed. (You sure those Hylian tabloids didn’t reveal that already?) The sun was bright as I walked out of the Lost Woods and onto Hyrule Field. I was carrying Link Jr. in my arms. Link walked at my side as we went. I watched as little Link giggled when he saw the sun. “This is the outside world my son.” (And then Kaepora Gaebora swoops down and takes him away!) “Look.” I said as I held him so he was facing Hyrule Field. He giggled and his little eyes lit up as he saw the new outside world. I smiled at Link as he giggled. “He is so beautiful my love.” “He is the best gift you ever gave me.” (Other than his penis?) I said as I looked into his blue eyes. Link leaned over and kissed me, smiled, then put his arm around me. When we reached the Castle Gates Princess Zelda, Impa and the King were there to greet us. We were taken to the Castle Courtyard where everyone was waiting to meet the son of the “Hero of Time.” (If you’re talking about the courtyard where young Link and young Zelda met for the first time in the OoT game, wow that’s a real tight fit!)
There was a lot of bustle as people waited to see the son of Link and Jenna. (”Some were clutching rosary beads and muttering prayers.” “Others were wielding crucifixes and stakes.”) I looked from behind the archway and saw that the Sages had attended, (Man the Sages really have nothing better to do than SAFEGUARD THE WORLD FROM GANONDORF!!!) and to my surprise even Princess Ruto was there. (She wrote a letter on your honeymoon saying that she wanted to see your baby!) Even the Zora (”Fish sticks! Get your fish sticks here!”) and Goron races attended to see this blessed event. (Even Biggoron? Wouldn’t he end up smushing everyone?) I cuddled our son as I waited for the King to announce us. Link smiled when our little son looked up at him, smiled big and giggled. I saw Link’s face just light up when I handed our son to him. I nearly cried as I watched Link cuddle our little miracle. Little Link meant as much to me as his father. (Well I can imagine how important that is to you bo- Oh wait you meant the baby! My bad!) my whole world revolved around them. They were my life. I listened as the King made his speech, (”I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewins- oops wrong speech!”) then we were announced. I looked in to my love’s eyes and told him it was time to bless our son. Link handed me Link Jr. to me and we went to show all of Hyrule the son of a legend.
I held the tiny baby gently in my arms as we walked out to greet all of Hyrule. Then as we walked out a loud cheer rose from the awaiting crowd. (Who’s willing to stick their foot out?) Zelda played her lullaby as I prepared our little son to be held high. (So Zelda’s lullaby is the national anthem around here?) When she finished the King spoke once more. “My people, this is a time of blessing.” “A new life has entered the world, a life born by Hyrule’s legend.” (Wait Jenna’s the Hero of Time now?!?) “Once a boy of destiny, left the forest and became a man.” “He entered the Temple of Time and pulled the Master Sword from its resting place.” “Thus he became the “Hero of Time.” (Well there was also him having to destroy some monsters and uniting the different races together too) “ His destiny became Hyrule’s salvation.” “His bravery saved us from a life of darkness.” “Then with his duties completed, he found a took a wife.” (More like she brainwashed him) “Now that the hero and his wife have been blessed with a new baby boy.” “I now present the “Hero of Time” Link, his wife Jenna, and their new son.” Then the King smiled at us and gave us way. I handed our son to Link and we walked forward, to where all of Hyrule could see our new son. I stood by Link’s side as he looked down over all of Hyrule. (”KNEEL PEASANTS!”)
“I, Link the “Hero of Time” present our new son, Link the Second!” He yelled as he held our son up high for all of Hyrule to see. (It’s the circle of life~) A loud cheering rose from the people of Hyrule as Link held our son up high. I smiled as everyone cheered, I felt happy. This was truly a special time in our little son’s life. (If your son was capable of remembering stuff at his age...)
After our son was presented, it was time for our son to be blessed. Rauru the Light Sage was awaiting with the other sages to bless our son first. He walked up to little Link and put his hands on his head. “Link the Second, son of the “Hero of Time” was born under a legend and will grow up in his father’s image.” (”And thus be unfairly compared to his father with every choice he makes!”) “To help guide and protect him in his journey through life, we the six sages each bestow a gift upon thy little one.” (Shouldn’t Flora, Fauna and Merryweather be doing that?) “I, Rauru the Light Sage, bestow the gift of courage upon thee.” Rauru’s hands begun to glow as he gave the gift of courage to our son. (Link already bears the Triforce of Courage within him, so wouldn’t a part of that already be in little L.J.?)
Completed, Saria the Forest Sage was next to bestow her gift. “I, Saria the Forest Sage, bestow the gift of friendship upon thee.” Saria placed her hands on Link Jr’s tiny head and bestowed her gift. (Friendship is Magic: Literally!)
Next was Daurina. “I, Daurina the Fire Sage, bestow the gift of power upon thy brother.” With his big Goron hands he gently placed them on the tiny baby’s head and shared his gift with him. (“I HAVE THE POWER!!!!!”)
Then reluctantly Ruto walked over to our son to bestow her gift. “I, Ruto the Water Sage, bestow the gift of love upon thee.” (”So that hopefully, we shall wed one day”) She placed her gentle fish like hands in our son’s forehead and gave him her gift. (Well that’s one hell of an image...)
Next was Impa. “I, Impa the Shadow Sage, bestow the gift of wisdom upon thee.” Then the Sheika gave our son another beautiful gift. (Here’s hoping he uses it to not muck up another beloved series. Like Twilight.)
And last was Nabooru the Gerudo. She walked over to the cradle where our son was lying. She peered into the cradle and smiled at the little infant. “You truly look like your father.” She said as she placed her hands on his small head. “I, Nabooru the Spirit Sage bestow the gift of compassion upon thee.” Then the final gift was given. (Something we the readers have not borne upon you since this started)
Next Princess Zelda came to bestow her personal gift. She gently placed her hands on our baby’s head and gave him the most special gift “I Princess Zelda, bestow the most important gift of all, the gift of knowledge.” (”Because Goddesses know that your mother didn’t have any when she created this world”) I watched as her gentle hands begun to glow. Then an aura of white light surrounded the tiny baby as the gift of knowledge was given. Once completed the white aura faded and Rauru spoke once more. “With these gifts, Link the Second shall be guided through the valley of life.” “He is truly one special child, a child of destiny.” I held Link tight as I watched our little son get his final blessing. A tear of happiness ran down my cheek as I thought of what beautiful gifts were given to our special little son. Our son was truly a descendant of my “Hero of Time.” (Just wait. The son of the Hero of Time will grow up to be one half of Cheech and Chong)
After the blessing was complete our final place for Link Jr to receive a gift was from the Great Deku Tree. After some final words Link and I took our son and headed for Kokiri Forest. Saria came with us. Once we arrived at the Great Deku Tree he awoke from his slumber. “Ah Link and Jenna, I have been expecting thee.” “Come and sit.” As we sat down in the grass as little Link giggled and reached for a butterfly that fluttered near his head. “I see thou have had thy first born.” “As promised I give thee as special gift.” I watched as a small glowing light flew over to us. Then I noticed it was a fairy. (SON OF A BITCH! MORE FAIRIES?!?!?) “A fairy for our son, this is truly the best gift of all.” I thought to myself. (So the Sages blessing generic character traits upon your kid wasn’t good enough?) As the small blue fairy flew around our son, he giggled and tried to reached for her. “Hello.” “My name is Aria.” “Nice to meet you.” The fairy said as she fluttered in a circle around our little son. I smiled as the young fairy played with Link Jr. Then as I looked into Link’s eyes, he saw a tear run down my face as I smiled. “Our son truly is very special.” “He’s our little miracle.” I laid my head on Link’s shoulder as he stroked my right arm. Our son was very special indeed, he was the son of a legend. (”And as we watched, Link Jr. grabbed Aria and began teething on her.”)
This hit me while the sages were pilfering Shazam’s origin story. Wisdom and knowledge are kind of the same concepts right? I mean granted knowledge helps to grow wisdom but it just seems kind of redundant to me.
Also, wouldn’t compassion be better suited to be gifted from Impa the Shadow Sage since it’s kind of associated with death (I presume)? Just a random thought.
