About this time four years ago, there was a smug confidence among the pundit class in Washington that Hillary Clinton was going to grind her way to a victory, Donald Trump was going to spend the rest of his life claiming he had been cheated of the White House and politics would find its equilibrium and forever swear off treating elections like a reality show.

Golly, were we wrong. Whatever the current polls say, we should consider this possible election outcome: Trump may well win a second term.

The President is back at the White House and reportedly on the mend after three nights in Walter Reed, recovering from COVID-19. He’s champing at the bit to get back out on the campaign trail himself. He says he wants to debate Joe Biden next week as planned, and he’s sending Vice President Mike Pence into tonight’s debate in Utah and tomorrow’s rally in Arizona ready to fight for votes.

Trump has been running for re-election since he won in 2016. Even in the window between his win and his Inauguration, he held “thank you” rallies. He started raising money and building a machine earlier than anyone in U.S. history. His takeover of the Republican Party started in the West Wing and the Republican National Committee, but he carefully installed loyalists in state parties and, in turn, shoveled GOP cash to them to build-out turnkey get-out-the-vote operations for him.

There is always a back-and-forth on which party has the upper hand when it comes to the use of tech, but no one can deny Trump has gone bigger on social-media spending. On Facebook and Google alone this year, Trump has spent $195 million to Biden’s $124 million, according to tracking done by Democratic firm Bully Pulpit Interactive.

Over the years, Trump has proven to be a Teflon contender, the ever-cascading series of scandals that have befallen his tenure never seeming to stick. Despite lagging Biden in national polls, he remains within striking distance in key states like North Carolina and Florida. Trump has had his hands on the wheel for the last four years. It’s been a bumpy ride, but for many voters, that’s been fine. The pre-coronavirus economy was humming along, Trump had alienated many global peers but hadn’t started any more wars, and the impeachment saga proved insufficient to remove Trump from office. His ability to shock and offend is now a rote part of American politics.

There are, of course, things Trump should be worried about. He’s been slipping with important blocs of voters since his first weeks in office. In the latest NBC News/ Wall Street Journal poll, there comes this warning sign: before the debate in Cleveland, Trump was ahead of Biden by 23 points among white voters who lack a college degree; after the debate, that advantage shrunk to 14 points. Trump faced his biggest declines among older voters and suburban women, two groups he is now on pace to lose by more than points.

Trump came to power in large part by being underestimated. There’s a lot of that happening again, with observers looking at data points like white voters’ slide away from Trump and his financial troubles. But Trump is also not wrong when he asserts that many of the people who will vote for him — not MAGA loyalists, but those who will ultimately cast their ballot for him anyway — aren’t showing up in polls and are still as aggrieved as they were four years ago when they helped vote him into power.

On Nov. 3, if Trump easily carries a vault of important states like Texas and Georgia, plus holding on in Ohio, Michigan and Arizona on top of the states that are already expected to be in the bag with him, we could see a Trump win declared that night. Biden has said he will concede if he loses. But whereas Biden has a half-dozen routes to the needed 270 electoral votes, Trump’s path is one that requires everything falling into place and little margin for error.

A lot of Americans just want this election to be over. We’re all tired. And given that collective lack of sleep, we could also be as wrong as we were four years ago.

Democratic Debate #2 -- Transcript

Hosts: Good evening folks, and welcome to the second night of debates. We have here a bunch of politicians, and also a self-help guru who somehow got here. Also Andrew Yang, who's a tech guy. What does that even mean? We don't know! He probably wears sweat pants to work at a startup where everyone gets free seltzer and uses treadmill standing desks and writes "code." One time I wrote a code where each number meant a different letter, and I wrote it in invisible ink that you could only read if you put lemon juice on it. Or maybe I saw that in a movie. So what do y'all think about stuff?

White candidates: We have a lot of opinions about gun violence and police brutality and racism.

Kamala: Former Vice President Joe Biden, I do not believe that you are a racist but, objectively, you are a racist.

Biden: I disagree that I am a racist. I sat behind Obama during his speeches, and also I like gay people too. Your feelings are wrong and I didn't hurt you because I am not a racist. I am not a racist because, well, my time is up. My time's up, right? Is my time up? I probably don't have time to answer that question. Sorry, my time is up.

Gillibrand: I would like to say some words--

Hosts: Sorry, Senator, we're moving on now.

Gillibrand: — because I have some more stuff to say about all this so—

Hosts: Nope, we're not going to do that.

Gillibrand: — and I have a lot of thoughts and ideas and it's my turn when I say it's my turn so —

Hosts: Senator. Senator.

Hosts: We don't know what that is and we don't really care so we're gonna move on to other people.

Andrew Yang: Okay, sure! I hope I didn't insert myself too much. Let me know if you would like to hear more from me, also it's okay if you don't.

Hickenlooper: Socialism bad. No socialism. We can't be socialists, but even if we're not, people will say we are, so it will be bad no matter what happens because socialism is bad. Don't be a socialist, but also don't not be a socialist because they will think you are a socialist anyways.

Bennet: I agree with Bernie, but here's where we think differently. As Former Vice President Joe Biden said, I think that what Mayor Buttigieg said was what Bernie said.

Hosts: What do y'all think about healthcare?

Buttigieg: One time I went to the emergency room.

Biden: Me too, I have also been to the emergency room.

Gillibrand: I HAVE NEVER BEEN SICK BUT I WOULD LIKE TO CHIME IN—  

Bennet: I am moved by what these people have said and would like to add that I, too, have been to the emergency room.

Swalwell: When I was a fetus, Former Vice President Joe Biden was my grandfather. And right after I was conceived, he stood up out of his rocking chair and yelled at my mother's stomach, "you are a strong and capable fetus! Please carry on my legacy because I am of feeble body and mind! I hate old people!!"

Hosts: Former Vice President Joe Biden, do you think that you are old and ready for death?

Gillibrand: IS IT MY TURN???!!

Biden: Old people are good if they are me, I am the one good old person.

Buttigieg: I am four.

Marianne Williamson: On the subject of climate change, old people still use their brains sometimes. John Kennedy is not an old person but he was a politician and he was interested in space. Immigration is a political issue.

Hosts: Thank you, Ms. Williamson.

Marianne Williamson: This may be a bold statement, but I think that child abuse is bad, and I think it's also bad when the government does it. I don't care if everyone disagrees with me, call me crazy, but I'm standing my ground on this one — locking children in cages is something that is LESS than desirable and I do NOT think that Trump is a very good president.

Hosts: Thank you, Ms. Williamson.

Marianne Williamson: I know nothing about politics but I do know about profiting off of people's insecurities—

Hosts: Thank you, Ms. Williamson.

Marianne Williamson: When we know that what we that do say we. And —

Hosts: Thank you so much, Ms. Williamson.

Marianne Williamson: I care about climate change, and one day, there will be other people being born and they will also be affected by climate change.

Biden: After I defeat Donald Trump by winning the presidency, I will defeat Donald Trump.

Buttigieg: Just everything, pretty much.

Hickenlooper: I will do things BEFORE I am president.

Marianne Williamson: New Zealand says they are good children, but I'm like, girlfriend, you got another thing coming. It's really nice that we've got all these plans, but if you think plans will fix plans, you got a thing. Trump says things, but it's all connected. It's about the environment, it's about money, but it's also about if our healthcare has plans and you think you are plan then you are a thing. Love. It has to do with environmental policies, it has to do with love, it has to do with big pharma, it has to do with environmental policies, it has to do with energy, it has to do with morality, it has to do with love, it has to do with environmental policies.

Hosts: Bernie, you said something that you said.

Bernie: That is a mischaracterization.

Hosts: It's verbatim what you said. What else would you like to say to voters? Let's start with Swalwell.

Gillibrand: It is my turn.

Swalwell: I am dad. Mr. Dad reporting for diaper duty. If you don't know diddly squat about doodoo in a diapy, you'll be a fart butt poopoo in Washington.

Hickenlooper: My name is Hickenlooper, and dag nabbit, I was a boy who came from a rustic country bumpkin upbringing with barely a penny to my name. When I wasn't dumpin' slops in the hog house, I was patchin' up my granddad's trousers in the barnyard. But I had a lotta nerve and big heart and I plucked my fiddle and yeehawed my way from the small town to the big city and now I'll eat my hat if you don't see me doin' my darndest in this here fancy old white house. You're darn-tootin!

Not feeling 100%?

This is more anecdote than data, but I feel like I've been seeing a lot of clustered bar charts (where you have a number of bars, for different series, bunched together in each category) with quite a lot of bars per category recently.

This sort of thing:

Lest I risk being stripped of my Peston Geek of the Week badges, there isn't anything particularly wrong with this - it just happened to be one example I noticed this week! But personally, I find four bars per category a bit much - I don't think the key stories are as easy to read as they might be. (I should confess my own sins at this point.)

In instances like this one - where the results for a single age group will add up to 100% - I think there's an obvious alternative: a 100% bar chart.

I think this makes the same point - that attitudes to lifting lockdown divide along age lines - more clearly. The thing you might lose is being able to easily compare should/should not for a particular age group, but that's not the main point being made and (personally) I think that takes some time with the original anyway.

Again, there's nothing particularly wrong with the original in this instance. But I've definitely seen more egregious examples, where the number of clustered columns becomes a bar to understanding the data.

Scary Clown tried hard to keep us from knowing anything but word is out. I truly hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy.  May we all adjust calmly to this new world and help and love one another.

An animal sanctuary in South Carolina is asking for volunteers to cuddle rescue pigs. At least 75 of the pigs that were taken out of harm’s way from a farm in Kentucky have been adopted.

Stegosaurus footprints thought to be 170 million years old were found on the Isle of Skye. This is the first evidence of these modest sized cuties in Scotland.

A Federal court has granted a request by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe to strike down federal permits for the Dakota access pipe line. The U.S. Army corps of engineers violated the National environmental policy act when it affirmed federal permits for the pipeline. The court found that there were significant unresolved concerns about the potential impacts of oil spills and their likelihood to take place. It took 4 years but the tribe’s experts on technical analysis proved their case. Now the corps must work up a full environmental impact statement.

A lot has happened in the democratic race since last I wrote. Buttigieg is out but his breakfast with the Carters was a wonderful thing to see. Klobuchar is out, Bloomberg is out, Gabbard is out, Kemp is out and they all back Biden. Warren is out and keeping mum. It seemed that once Biden started to take most of the delegates and the others all started dropping that there was a shift. The political pundits and hosts started turning on Bernie. Were they just waiting for all this to come down?  Many of the states that Biden won are in the South and the Dems probably won’t win them anyway. They seem to love Trump even as he screws up this whole virus situation. Things seemed sort of even handed until the wind shifted.  It seems Yang and Tio Bernie had some timely ideas when they said everyone needs healthcare and about $1000 a month.  How different would the country be right now if those things were already in place?  A couple of our biggest issues would not be there. ** Do we blame the young for only being left with 2 old white guys as our choices? Did this whole big exodus of candidates begin with a “subtle” phone call from Obama to Buttigieg?

Why is it that simple voting is still so hard in this country? People have fought from the beginning to be heard, to have a real democracy. Some people take it for granted and some stay home.  If a person really wants to vote, can we please make it EZ?  There are special circumstances this year and let’s hope it proves once and for all, that vote by mail is the way. People were waiting for hours to cast a vote and some primaries were cancelled.  How about Ranked choice voting?? This gives voters the option to rank candidates in order of choice. Voters pick a first choice candidate and have the option to rank backup candidates in order of their choice. If a candidate gets more than half of the first choices they win, as usual. But, if there is no majority after the first choices, the race is decided by instant run off. The candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and voters who picked candidates as #1 will have their vote count as the next choice. This continues until a candidate wins more than half the votes. It can also be used in multi winner elections like city council where they have to reach a threshold.

'We came, we saw, he died,' she joked. But overthrowing Gadhafi was a humanitarian and strategic debacle that now limits our options on North Korea.

Black Africans are being sold in open-air slave markets,  and it’s Hillary Clinton’s fault. But you won’t hear much about that from the news media or the foreign-policy pundits, so let me explain.

Footage from Libya, released recently by CNN, showed young men from sub-Saharan Africa being auctioned off as farm workers in slave markets.

And how did we get to this point? As the BBC reported back in May, “Libya has been beset by chaos since NATO-backed forces overthrew long-serving ruler Col. Moammar Gadhafi in October 2011.”

And who was behind that overthrow? None other than then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Under President George W. Bush in 2003, the United States negotiated an agreement with Libyan strongman Gadhafi. The deal: He would give up his weapons of mass destruction peacefully, and we wouldn’t try to depose him.

That seemed a good deal at the time, but the Obama administration didn’t stick to it. Instead, in an operation spearheaded by Clinton, the United States went ahead and toppled him anyway.

The overthrow turned out to be a debacle. Libya exploded into chaos and civil war, and refugees flooded Europe, destabilizing governments there. But at the time, Clinton thought it was a great triumph — "We came, we saw, he died,” she joked about Gadhafi’s overthrow — and adviser Sidney Blumenthal encouraged her to tout her "successful strategy" as evidence of her fitness for the highest office in the land.

It’s surprising the extent to which Clinton has gotten a pass for this debacle, which represents a humanitarian and strategic failure of the first order. (And, of course, the damage is still compounding: How likely is North Korea’s Kim Jong Un to give up his nuclear weapons after seeing the worthlessness of U.S. promises to Gadhafi?)

Back during his brief stint in the Democratic primary, former senator James Webb raised the issue, saying America "blew the lid off of a series of tribal engagements. You can't get to the Tripoli airport right now, much less Benghazi." But as the Libya disaster continues to unfold, Clinton’s role in it gets surprisingly little attention.

Maybe it’s buried under the other Clinton/Obama debacles in the Middle East, such as the botched Syrian policy that The Washington Post’s Fred Hiatt called ”ahumanitarian and cultural disaster of epochal proportions.” Remember President Obama’s “red line” that Syria crossed, and that Obama didn’t enforce?

That led to a destabilizing flood of refugees hitting Europe, too.

And, of course, there’s the Yemen policy, which Obama bragged about as a model for the war on terror. But now Yemen is another war-wracked humanitarian and strategic disaster.

Still, Libya is in a class of its own. In Syria and Yemen, at least, the situation was already bad. Libya, before Clinton got involved, was comparatively stable and no strategic threat to the United States or its allies. Now it’s a shambles, with people literally being sold in slave markets.

Back in the 2012 presidential campaign, Vice President Biden told a group of African Americans that the GOP was going to "put you all back in chains." But it turned out that it was Clinton’s policies that led to black people being sold. As some ponder another Hillary Clinton run in 2020, that’s worth pointing out.
