in this exposé i will

Isayama talks about his drawing in way too humble a fashion. but this is especially true when it comes to emotions and expressions - especially in aot where emotions and the nuances of character emotions are portrayed outside of dialogue.

but - especially wit - went about doing a disservice to Levi in particular when putting his character to screen. i don't think it's too controversial to say that most aot fans are anime onlys right? and it's much less controversial to remember the very bad take that throughout aot Levi is emotionless.

obviously, this is clear enough in the anime. but the manga really brings the emotional spectrum of his character to all new horizons. it's been stated by Isayama that Levi is the most emotional character in aot. and if you cross-examine scenes in the manga vs the anime, this is unmistakable.

so i want to give a few examples of where the anime - mostly wit - miss these nuances in Levi's show of emotions.

i'll start with what i consider the greatest offender of all (from the moments on my mind for now):

right as Midnight Sun starts, Levi has just managed to get back to Wall to find that Zeke is escaping and Armin is half-dead. he failed in carrying out Erwin's order.

i mean WOW, right? in both, Levi looks exhausted yes, but in the manga he looks frantic. on the verge of tears almost.

this is going to be a trend, where the anime portrays Levi in a much more hardened and determined manner compared to, arguably, how he really is. i think that there's a balance that the manga depicts much more equally.

later, Floch is recounting how he found Erwin. he found him alive, and considered putting him out of his misery, but decided that Erwin didn't deserve mercy.

this scares the shit out of Levi - much, much more clearly in the manga. in the left 2, he looks afraid in both, but in the manga, that fright is just. so much more intense. you know how strong Levi's feelings are.

right after RtS, Levi and Hange have come to let Eren and Mikasa out of jail.

understandably, Levi is neck deep in mourning. not just Erwin, but every life that was sacrificed just so he could fail; the two veteran squads that died when Bert transformed; Moblit; and of course Hange was badly injured too.

his depression is TANGIBLE in the manga. the anime doesn't convey it as well... (if at all i would argue)

in season 3, when Kenny has given his speech about how everyone is a slave to their own vice, and he's just retorted to Levi, "what're you, a hero?!"

clearly in the manga, he's much more exasperated. his head is hanging more and he looks pleading instead of angry.

the anime didn't even include this panel.

he feels sorry for him.

the attack on Liberio. Levi is cutting Zeke from his Titan.

in the manga, it's so INTENSE. i'm sure he's experiencing the same exact feelings as he did 4 years before. this moment is supposed to be his triumph - when he completes his promise to Erwin. you can clearly see the longing and disappointment, but along with forced determination, because putting on a show of killing Zeke is torturous for him, but it's his duty.

(i posted about this earlier but) Levi has just cut Zeke out of his Titan and needs to put down a grenade in order to give the impression that Zeke is dead. then he notices Magath, but most importantly that two kids are directly below him.

in the manga, his head is more downturned as opposed to above them, which is important in the scope of getting across that Levi doesn't see them (or Marleyans for that matter) as below him.

in the manga it's clear that he finds absolutely no satisfaction out of it, which is seen in the anime version too, but like i've said, not like Isayama gets it across.

i have a strong feeling that he showers twice a day: in the morning after waking up and at night before going to bed

his cologne is probably the type that will last in an elevator for like a week after he uses it once. i dont think this mf ever smells like anything other than his cologne

has a secret folder on his phone of semi-nudes and other scandalous pics from when he felt sexy at the time omg

aside from demon language/eng/jp he can speak french and knows latin

listens to classical stuff yea but he also listens to diavolos mixtapes (re: diavolo's section)

not a fan of sweets but will eat sweet things when craving

really bland sense of humor...borderline cringey 😭✋🏻

has gone to google images and searched for "inspirational quotes tumblr" "gold aesthetic tumblr" & "relatable crush post tumblr" then reposts it onto his socials or just taps thru them and giggles bc he relates

his cologne doesnt last as long as lucifers and probably smells common. he has to reapply a lot but it's a people pleasing smell. it's cheaper hence the constant reapplying

he probably does have an expensive bottle but is the type to totally overspray...eek

he is canonically a car guy 🥲 and probably tells the one in his room good morning & good night + kisses the hood every once in a while. has tons of car magazines

he doesnt really speak other languages but has attempted to learn spanish before

listens to whatever is on the radio. doesnt rly stan anyone but he eventually will listen to mc's playlist and mc's playlist ONLY

lurks on mc's socials ALL THE TIMEEEE like he will rewatch ur stories and scroll thru ur feed and overanalyze ur tweets/rts or blog posts. if ur mc isnt the type to use sns much he still googles ur name all the damn time just to find any sites u might be on fjdjdjdjskks

probably streams on whatever youtube or twitch devildom site equivalent there is, but only has like 40 or so followers. which he is okay with!

until he sees someone else who gets more attention than him. then the envy starts kicking in bad. especially if they suck 🧍🏻‍♀️

classic gamer boy smell. you know, sweat, tears, must, and (sometimes) axe deodorant. lucifer has to do a scent check before he goes out to any event & lets him use his cologne. how sweet!

kpop stan!! more girl groups than anything and his ults are probably GIRLS GENERATION, wonder girls, twice, loona, & red velvet

cried when ioi disbanded and refused to leave his room. the only thing u could hear was downpour on loop at full blast

can also speak korean & communicate in echolocation like dolphins 😏

Michael: not really foreshadowing if they keep doing it throughout the movie , if anything its foreshadowing that like… hell… whats the robots name - baymax learning it… not really foreshadowing the building explodes (gen notes MAJOR EVENT) … what blew my mind was that movie has a post credits scene. Jeremy: oh yeah was it like with the dudes father. Michael: Fred yeah! I don't like it when its 105 degrees but i do like being able to just wear Tshirts most of the year and not dealing with snow Lindsay: i like Fall the most cuz like its blend of i guess i embrace the basic bitch stereo types of fall , want my pumpkin spice latee but ALSO i know halloween is coming and ive said before how THAT'S like my religious holiday so like… i come alive. Jeremy: over the weekend me and kat went to a town called rockfort (i think?) which is like right on the ocean , the weather was a little cold for it , like 50 maybe and the sea breeze made it chillier… im not really a beach person just more water. (paraphrasing jeremy here) Jeremy: theres this guy who flys a drone out over beaches into the ocean , and he released the footage… apparently due to there being a lot less people now theres just Great White Sharks that go relatively close to beaches now… there are times where hes filming people playing and like 10 ft away is a fucking shark ya know just swimming. And cuz they're really far away hed be like “id see it , film it , then go to a lifeguard and show it like “oh btw…” “ Michael: so you know 2 hours ago someone may have been eaten. MattL he should put a speaker on the drone to like announce the sharks like HEY! DEATH OUT THERE!. Lindsay: “whats that Dronie? Theres a shark in the water?!?” Jeremy: and it was funny seeing that behavior where everyonce and a while a shark would be swimming then someone would do something near it not seeing the shark and the shark just goes “fuck dat” and swims away MattL god dude…. My Final Thoughts on Arc-V and What Im Going to do Next

Hey! I finished Arc-V a few hours ago and I have dome stuff to say.

First of all, the finale. Eh, I thought it was decent. Like, I loved episode 140 and thought it was a very good conclusion already, though it wouldve been nice to have a "where are they now" kinda episode. A little like the ending of the last episode of GX but extended since we had a lot of characters and all that. But instead we had these 8 episodes that made everything feel so weird and convoluted. I did like the actual final duel despite me not really liking Deklin.

Now onto more general stuff:

Obviously the character design is amazing. I vibed with most of them, and by most of them, I mean pretty much any important character than isnt Deklin; I dislike him and I dislike his fashion choices. But other than that I loved it.

Then there are the characters themselves; I think theyre lovely! There are a lot of them and I did lose track of some of them a few times but overall I think they juggled them and their idividual plotlines and motivations very well. Also, I really appreciated that they mixed things up with the groups sometimes. I feel like a lot of shows with larger casts tend to do that thing where they just pair them up and then they stay in those specific groups for the whole time, so its nice that they tried with that. I also just really liked their dynamics, they were quite charming and very fun to watch.

The villains werent quite as good as in some of the other series but they were pretty alright. I liked the concept of Zarc and thought it was executed well. Just, all of the Yu-boi stuff was great, I loved it so much! Also Dragons, lots of dragons.

Some of the character arcs felt a bit rushed to me though, especially towards the end. I cant really explain why though, sorry.

Then another thing I quite appreciated were the different summoning types. I dont pay that much attention to the duels but it was nice seeing them again. Same goes for turbo dueling, it was very nice to see that return as well (altough I am still salty that we didnt get to see anyone duel on rollerskates).

But yeah, thats about it. Now lets discuss what Im going to do next cause I have it all planned out already.

Im currently watching RT's RWBY because I lurk around the RWBYcritics subreddit a lot and follow qujfe a few RWDE/RWBY critique blogs here on tumblr but now Im finally watching it! Im not going to live blog it though (atleast for now) but I will be uploading reviews of the individual volumes as Im watching the series so yeah. Obviously that means less YGO content for a while (which I assume most of you followed me for) but dont worry! The next thing I have planned is a rewatch of the entire YGO series, but this time in Japanese and German! The only main series I havent watched yet is Sevens because there doesnt seem to be an English dub available, so I thought 'might as well just rewatch it already'. I also havent seen any of the movies or that Capumon Chess series thats also there apparently, so I'll almost definitly live blog those. I cant guarantee a (n active) live blog of the Japanese and German dub yet seeing as I already know the mayor plot beats and characters and part of the fun is live blogging it when you dont know anything about it yet, but we'll see.

Im almost done watching the first volume of RWBY by now so prepare for a review later today or maybe tomorrow morning.

a character I just can’t sympathize with: in my mcu rewatch ive come to understand tony more, but i still think he’s a fucking self centered asshole who doesnt actually try and improve himself. i think he takes more responsibility for things he couldve prevented, or things he accidentally caused, than his own actions and it bugs me, and i just dont like how he treats other characters. 

a character I grew to love: i think most characters my opinions havent changed much since their introduction, but i do genuinely like loki now. i never hated his character but fandom was SO obnoxious that my neutral feelings towards him turned into hate, but after ragnarok and dark world i’m down.

my favorite male character: surprisingly, oliver? i wasnt expecting to like him but then he pseudo-adopted tyler and i was About It. also tyler is a sweetheart and i love him.

//jumps through your window, i'm officially hopping on the bandwagon (which is now a motorcycle with three sidecars that hold me and the two other anons). in your 1239 word long wash meta you mentioned you had "digressions about how Wash interacts with Locus (bc i have Opinions)" and so i stand humbly before the greatest sage of our generation and ask: what are these Opinions?

holy fuck adri, remember when you asked me this ten billion years ago??? I just did (which is a shame bc i was just about to go for a nap but I couldn’t stop thinking about all the things I wanted to say, SO HERE WE ARE). lmao I know you asked for like a five page essay with mla citations and i was going to do that bc it would’ve been funny, but im a lazy piece of shit, so have this rambling mess instead. (I also didn’t rewatch the chorus trilogy like I was planning to, so y’know I might be wrong on several things)

I don’t entirely remember what the original context of what you quoted me on was, but I do remember that I was going to point out that Wash really doesn’t care about Locus at all.

Like, you’ll notice that before being kidnapped and during his captivity, Wash actually seems kind of open to what Locus is saying? Enough that he actually has flashbacks to who he was during the Recollection trilogy, and trusts him enough to accept Freckles, no questions asked. He was giving Locus the benefit of the doubt, which is honestly kind of a first for Wash. And then Locus turns out to be a backstabbing douchebag and yeah, I’m pretty sure that cements Wash’s opinion that the only trustworthy people are the BGC.

And you can tell the moment Wash stopped being done with his bullshit. The moment they find out that Freckles’ has a tracking device in him.“It was a lapse in judgement, it won't happen again.“ (Red vs. Blue, season 12, episode 16, ‘Out of the Frying Pan’) (there’s your mla formatting you fuck) You can just hear the self-recrimination in his voice, and from that moment on, he is completely done with Locus, and refuses to admit they are anything alike. (Oh right! I think this point was supposed to tie in with Wash’s issues with betrayal and how he doesn’t really give second chances.)

But yeah, jumping off of this and onto my other Opinions... I always thought that RT trying to like draw parallels between Wash and Locus was foolish and nonsensical. The two of them are honestly nothing alike and idk if that’s shitty writing or brilliant writing that shows just how little Locus knows.

Because here’s the thing: Locus is trying to find validation for his point of view of being nothing more than a weapon, and following orders. He’s trying to convince himself that what he’s doing, destroying his own agency, is okay, because otherwise he is willingly going along with orders he finds to morally reprehensible and has to deal with that guilt. Locus is trying to deny that he has responsibility for his actions.

Wash never really did that. At least, not in the seasons we see the most of him.

It might’ve worked if we had gotten like a full season of just the freelancers that went from its inception to its downfall, but we only just got the downfall part, so we have very little of Wash (or any of the other freelancers) just ‘following orders’. They do! But it’s not presented well imo? Like, it took work York pointing out that they were fighting the cops and asking if they were good guys for me to even notice anything wrong. Maybe I’m just blind or unobservant, but they should’ve explained what was happening or presented it better for it to work. (tbh the freelancer seasons were never my favourite seasons and the ones I remember the least about.)

And anyway, by the time we see that, Wash had already moved on to doing what he wanted to do? Like shooting South? All him. Destroying the AI fragments? His choice. Shooting Donut and Lopez? He wanted to do that. As far as I can remember, he never actually got orders to do that, he choose to do it.  So when, during his flashback, he goes “I was just following orders.”? It rings real fucking hollow to me. Wash has never done that, and in fact, would probably find that idea to be fucking dumb bc the one time he did, he ended up getting completely fucked over (aka project freelancer).

He does say “I did what I had to do”, which also tries to deny fault because it implies that he had no choice but to do what he did, but there’s also a sort of underlying idea of motivation? “I did what I had to do, to get what I want”. It’s acknowledging that he did commit his actions, but also trying to argue that you can’t fault him because he had no choice but to do them (which is bullshit and Wash knows it.) 

But Locus is trying to deny any kind of responsibility for what he does and tries to fit himself into the idea of just being a gun. That he has no moral obligations or agency for what he does. (Which doesn’t work, because as it turns out, Locus has a pretty strong moral compass and can’t deny that he is doing awful things for no good reason, and that doesn’t work for him.)

But yeah, Locus and Wash being foils for one another never really worked for me, because the both of them are coming from completely different places and motivations. (Ironically, you could even argue that Locus actually has a better moral compass than Wash). They are too different for what Locus was pushing to work. And those are my Opinions and digressions. (idk I might have more, I haven’t watched the chorus trilogy in so long, so who knows, this is what you’re getting though.)
