#but idk this feels like a sensitive topic for some ppl and i don't want to feed into the discourse pitting the two against each other

bg3 isn't even unfinished? like, you can play the full game. cut content isn't the same as unfinished, even if they decided to add it in later. the first patch is always going to fix a lot of bugs since the more complex the game the more those are to be expected? as if dai wasn't riddled with game breaking bugs until a week or two after launch. as if dai doesn't leech cpu usage, even now years later actually. like, if bg3 is unfinished bioware never made a finished game on launch either lmao. literally everything that anon said is easily refuted bullshit? I think they need a nap.
What's funny is that David Gaider actually remarked similarly on twitter.
Tumblr media
I understand the disappointment reading about the cut content. But if you didn't know about it and didn't play EA, you wouldn't even know there was cut content. And claiming the game is unfinished because there's cut content just egregiously misunderstands how game development works.
This is besides the point though because Anon didn't read my post. They maybe glanced at the first paragraph, saw my bio and header, and read "Fuck Dragon Age. All my homies hate Dragon Age" and "currently obsessed with BG3" meant that I was a Larian fanboy with a hateboner for Bioware.
I even mention at the end of my post on Bioware that I hope DA4 succeeds and that Bioware keeps doing what it's doing. Like, I'm genuinely worried about where this company is going??? There's no way anon read my post and concluded I hate bioware. Like, anon, please say sike.

I keep seeing a bunch of live and let go, boundaries are personal and not moral stances posts about writing and i largely agree ppl should be able to explore what they want in fic but also. Is there a way to balance or talk about "hi um white author so you kinda reinvented racism/blood eugenics and unilaterally present sex work as inherently degrading and etc etc etc for Shipping Angst Drama fodder, when the text is like. None of that" in fandom or even just in like. A server community. Maybe I'm a bit sensitive bc i feel constructed/projected misery is kind of tacky to begin with and i wouldn't do it with a complete stranger but idk my guy. I don't want to alienate myself but it's weird to go completely uncritical here
i think there are a couple items you need to check off the list before you can go "yes talking to internet stranger #37461239 about a highly sensitive topic is a good idea"
is it tagged appropriately? if it's tagged trust me the writer knows. they have probably gotten way more unsolicited feedback than they would really like
is the portrayal you're concerned about reinforcing an unhealthy or discriminatory predominant social narrative? if it is and you think the writer is genuinely unaware, then yeah, it might be worth bringing up. the emphasis here is on predominant please i am begging on my hands and knees
will this result in a productive conversation? if the intent behind this is to get people to reconsider, it isn't helping anyone if you know it will just lead to them doubling down and doing it even worse. at that point you're only making a performative statement to validate your own stance
if it really is bothering you that much, is there a compelling reason why you can't just block and move on? it isn't your responsibility nor is it feasible to fix how a fandom is doing things, especially if it's a group of people you don't really know. your own mental health always comes first, and a bit of salty venting in private with your friends never hurts anyone
if it IS a friend or acquaintance who is doing this and you think they would be open to discussing it with nuance, then you can probably bring it up. if that person has a basic level of consideration and respect for you it tends to go well, but i've also seen people double down because they already know there's something wrong with their attitudes but get mad at you for wanting them to change, and then it creates a whole ton of drama and people get hurt and it's not pretty. so. ymmv
ultimately, someone's views on racism or sex work or whatever is reflective of a broader social norm, and fandom is not the best space to try to fix that through confrontation-- it's usually someone's "safe space" where they want to retreat from the world, not come face-to-face with any sort of personal reckonings. do i think it's a mark of privilege that some people have the luxury of ignoring these issues when they "just want to have fun"? yes, but again, this is about being able to have productive discussion, not about what's "fair". unfortunately.
my two cents: if you're in a server community or some other space that makes you uncomfortable there's really nothing wrong with going "hey, we have fundamentally different standards when it comes to [x], and i don't think i want to be here" and moving on. the best way to challenge these things is quite literally to make your own food. there's a much better chance of the people you're worried about coming across it and realizing they like it than magically being able to argue them down with well-placed logic and reasonable points or whatever
EDIT: OH ALSO IM STUPID if you mean talking about it in general. not naming writer names but trends in the fandom. yes absolutely-- not in a public space like social media but definitely find a group of people who you trust who you can talk about these things with!! it is good and healthy. just make sure it isn't just a discord server open to the public or smth tho so you personally know and trust everyone who can see it (and you don't accidentally shit talk someone who is in that space lmao)

https://www.tumblr.com/rachdam/748285087964151808/hot-take-but-main-tags-are-for-everyone-whether-u
no no dw its normal to react like that when youre upset!
agree its frustrating that not everyone wants to tag properly. look i dont talk about any sensitive topics on tumblr or twt but on ao3 im very careful to put all the tags that apply especially when it can be triggering. ive already come across unpleasant surprises cuz of people who hadnt tagged their fics correctly, i know what its like to come across something u dont want to see and its awful
unfortunately though other than reminding them to properly tag their posts or blocking them, idk how to fix this issue & its very frustrating. and EVEN twts word limit shouldnt be an excuse cuz u just need to add a simple #proship and youre done no need to put out a whole sentence lol! anyway yes agree that tumblr is infinitely better than twt for tag space
no need for forgiving either tbh, of course u were upset at the time and it showed in your writing, but the point you emphasize is very important! people should learn how to properly tag their stuff both for people who are looking for that specifically or those who want to avoid it
ngl its nice to talk to someone whos antiship aligned (from what i can tell lol) and have a civil conversation for once. have a nice day!! ✨
Yeah honestly it's bad on both ends I don't think ppl should have to be exposed to content that could potentially trigger them blegh. Even antis will put horrific things and then crosstag just to be rude which is. Super fucked up. I wish people could be Normal and Nice to one another and take other's feelings into consideration but it's the internet so. No peace here ig 🙄
I appreciate you (as well as several other proshippers) being so kind despite how upset I came across, it gives me a lot of hope that hey!!! Some people actually DO care!! 😭💖 If the other proship spaces are gonna be kind Off then at least the Tumblr ones are gonna put in the effort to be kind 💪🏻 I absolutely have to give credit where it's due
I hope you (and everyone else!!) have a super nice day!!!

the first ask was kind of a permission to quibble request, since I've added my thoughts onto other ppls thoughts posted on Tumblr before and was asked to please not do that, because this was a sensitive topic for op and they did not want to elaborate, etc. so uh yeah that's what that was, I just want to be cautious about these kind of things ^^
and it's not that I have a problem with your post at all! I think your interpretation brings up some good points!
But, (Honestly I don't think bna really utilizes this right at all) I don't think the majority becomes minority trope is an instant strike out? I think if it's used in a way that highlights how this character, as they lived as a majority, were able to ignore the problems minorities experienced despite being aware of them (or even how living as majority they were able to be blind enough to completely miss how minorities were being abused and how their power of being a majority was shaping their lives) and then suddenly they are forced to confront it, no choice given (not like minorities are given a choice either) can still be a good way to critisize racist structures. idk I hope I'm not totally misinterpreting what you were saying, I do get how :/ that trope can be when it's used but I do think it does have *some* narrative potential (also feel free to answer me privatly, this got really long and idk I don't want to clog your blog with too many long rambly asks)
Isn’t… that kinda missing the point?
The first issue with this is that a character becoming a minority member to “understand” is the story equivalent of saying “people in the minority are the only ones that know when systems are bad; the majority just doesn’t know better”, when the actual answer is that the people in power subjugating minorities often know exactly what they’re doing, and the few that aren’t aware is likely due to the people in power subjugating the common knowledge. Also trying to rid ones’ hand of how they play into it is trying to rid them of responsibility. Gross.
More importantly, the second issue with that is quite simply… why are we having a voice of the majority be the focus of the story, when it’s the minorities that matter more?
When you’re talking about a literal society of indirect abuse, the people directly and indirectly benefitting from the systems shouldn’t be the focus, it isn’t about them. It’s about the people being limited on what they can achieve / do in their short mortal lives out of something completely out of their control. It’s about the people that receive harassment, bullying, less resources/money, and worse of all limited opportunities compared to their peers simply because some assholes decided that “nah, I’m gonna be a bully for the rest of my life, and make sure that I feel on top”.
I am not interested in stories where the bullies directly or indirectly get a voice before the victims, far from it. They’ve had their turn already, let me hear the victims.
Like, I’m white myself, and just because I’m aware of the systems does not mean I’m magically immune to the effects / benefits of the subjugation. I indirectly gain from it, and in the world of finite lives that means I indirectly take away from minorities.
The best I can do is prop the voices that do matter, teach others who are willing, remove power from those who refuse to better their society, and do everything I can to tear down the systems little by little, day after day.
But to posit that one can glean benefits from stories where someone of the majority gets focus on a situation dealing with minorities is critically missing the point.
I’m not interested in a story concept about racism from two buddy cops, I’m not interested in a story where you “magic” the racism away, and I am certainly not interested in a story where it takes someone wistfully removing themselves from the system as if that’s even possible.
When you are talking about racism, and want it to apply to the real world, do not make it trivial nor prop up the people in power first. It’s not about them.

Reading people's responses to your bucket list question, is making me feel so much better about the fact that I constantly have existential crisis. I'm glad that we're not alone and that it's apparently a normal thing. I don't know if you have any crazy wishes that you keep going back and forth on, maybe you could bite the bullet on one of those. Like with me, recently I've been thinking I want to get my nipples pierced but I keep stopping myself for some reason. I hope you're getting more good answers for your bucket list hun! 💕
Honestly i have no idea how it turned so deep, i expected ppl rec me crazy stuff but it turned deep and now my emotional ass needs to buckle up and roll with it like, cool cool cool no doubt😂
But yeah I'm glad we touched the topic even if it is sensitive for me, and to anyone reading- you're welcome to join the discussion, it's a good thing to talk about and i need to hear it bc it really is comforting to know that I'm not alone in this feeling🖤
Tbh idk how crazy are the dreams i have that aren't like Future related, i spent most of my teenage years with anxiety and suicidal so i didn't exactly see a future for myself even tho i knew what i wanted for college
And about your thing, i remembered this old tumblr post, so:

Hi I was wondering if you could provide more insight about the whole cryptids & racism thing you talked about some posts back. I don't think I understood what you were saying and I didn't really know what to google to get more info. I host a podcast about lesser known cryptids/monsters/etc. and haven't run into much of the racism associated with it (I think?) aside from Men in Black and 'lizard people'. I was wondering if you had any idea how I could be more sensitive in the matter. Thank you!!!
hello! i hope im not late responding to this, ive been on mobile and dont check my inbox frequently :')im not sure exactly what post youre referring to, but ive talked about and reblogged other ppl talking abt specifically anti-native racism in cryptid stories. i am not native american, nor am i an expert in these things, so i might be wrong abt some of the following and i encourage you to find blogs/articles by indigenous ppl and hear their voices!!some cryptids are appropriations of pieces of certain indigenous groups' folklore, and of what ive seen, are often disrespectful or misinformed caricatures of what they are and mean to the people whose culture they belong to. examples that come to mind now are nightwalkers and wendigos, which (to my knowledge) hold a fair amount of significance. even if you do research/"understand" the backgrounds of these entities, its inappropriate to claim these pieces of culture. another common thing is people using native americans as like. a plot driver (sry cant think of a good word) for their explanations of cryptids. so stories that say "the native americans believed..." are pretty sketchy. 1) there are a lot of different groups of indigenous people! they do not share the same beliefs, and its pretty presumptuous for someone whose NOT from a certain group to claim they know that group's culture . 2) it sounds like. dehumanizing almost? thats not quite what i mean i cant think of Words but. when people say that it feels like theyre not looking at native american people as *people* but just another piece of their mythology. one more thing - the ever so popular bigfoot (i kno u said ur podcast is abt lesser known cryptids so this probably wouldnt apply to u but its relevant to cryptids&racism topic in general) has racist origins -with 'bigfoot' being a derogatory name for a chief who was killed in the wounded knee massacre, 'sasquatch' i believe being a mispronunciation of a word in some native language (idk which language and i dont want to guess) ...it might not seem important, but i think staying in your cultural lane and pointing out when people are crossing the line (ive seen ppl say nightwalkers arent a native thing at all, that its an original idea from a videogame 🙄) all in all, it sounds like you are already trying to be careful and im sure your podcast is well-researched. the only advice i have for you is to be mindful, keep an eye out for sketchy info, and let your listeners know how they could be more sensitive too ^^i hope thats helpful - if anyone who sees this has any additions/amendments/corrections pls reply and add ur thoughts!

Um how do i put this~ I guess the topic of crucifixion is a bit sensitive for me; idk I just wanted to let you know that I wasn't completely comfortable with the way it was mentioned? And pls don't get me wrong I'm not a hate anon or anything I rly love this blog!! Its just idk.. just wanted to say how I feel. Please don't take offense- I'm not hating on you for it. I just wanted to let you know that some ppl (or maybe its just me) may be sensitive to that, just like how ppl may/would be w/ rape
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It was never my intention to make anyone uncomfortable or trigger anyone. You have my sincerest apologies. In the future, I will be more considerate with my words. -Admin Cole.
