Understand KPI Dashboards: A Beginner's Guide
If you are running a company or are working on a project - no matter how large or small it may be, it is an absolute necessity to regulate it. You would want some returns when you invest your time, money, and energy. But how do you know whether you are getting those returns or not? KPI dashboards help you see the position of your company at a glance.
What are KPIs and KPI Dashboards?
Before we understand what KPI dashboards are and how to leverage them, it is essential to understand what KPIs are.
KPIs or key performance indicators are yardsticks used to measure a campaign, project, or company performance. The KPIs can vary according to the end goal you have set, but it usually encompasses some data that determine the position of the ongoing task.
This means there are a lot of different parameters and data flowing in from all observations you need to analyze and interpret to understand whether the performance is up to the mark.
Sounds like a lot of work, right?
This is when KPI dashboards make your life a lot easier and you track more efficiently. A KPI dashboard is a tool that helps you to collect, store and update all the data from various sources in a single dashboard. This is usually done in a graphical or visual form so that you get all the information at a glance. Having a live update of your KPIs makes it easy for you to keep track of the progress.
How to create a KPI Dashboard?
Making a KPI dashboard is the only tedious work you will have to do once. After that, you will have an "at a glance" report of your progress. You can easily make a KPI dashboard by following this seven-step approach:
Have your objective very clear before you determine your KPIs.
Choose the source of data that will constitute your KPIs.
Determine how frequently you want the KPIs to be updated on the dashboard.
Try to divide your larger KPIs into smaller achievable KPIs.
Devise a way to be very regular while updating your KPIs.
When programming the KPI dashboard for figures, graphs, and charts - try to keep them as simple as possible for ease of understanding and less complication.
Comparing the previous results with the present is good, so customize your dashboard accordingly.
Difference between KPI Dashboard and KPI Report
It is a common misunderstanding that there is no significant difference between the KPI dashboard and the KPI report. The fundamental difference between the two is that while the KPI dashboard is used to update, view, and regulate the progress continuously, the KPI report is prepared (in most cases) at the end of the campaign or when a milestone is achieved.
A KPI dashboard is a very concise, graphical, and crisp representation of all that is going on in a campaign, and it is the onlooker who determines how it affects the campaign.
On the other hand, a KPI report comprises all the data, performance report, tables, details, and notes of the project that is self-explanatory - giving an insight into the ROI and KPI of the company and campaign.
Compiling all the moments of the KPI dashboard, adding explanatory notes, and supplementing it with data would result in the formation of the KPI report.
Benefits of KPI dashboards

“The Legislature knows our state, our people and our districts better than the federal courts or activist groups, and I am pleased that they answered the call, remained focused and produced new districts ahead of the court deadline,” Ivey said in a statement after she signed off on the map.
With no Democrats voting in favor, the legislature passed a remedial map that includes one congressional district that has around 50% Black voting age population and a second district with roughly 40%.
The “Livingston 3” map came as the result of a Friday afternoon conference committee, called a “compromise” by Republican leadership though no Democrats supported it, after the two chambers had only approved their own, different versions.
District 7, currently represented by Democratic Congresswoman Terri Sewell, would remain the only majority-Black congressional district in Alabama; however, the new map actually reduces the Black voting age population in District 7 from 55.6% to 50.65%, according to data from the legislature.
The provided data shows the Black voting age population for the proposed District 2 in the southeastern part of the state would increase the Black voting age population, but only to 39.93%.
Democrats blasted Republicans for ignoring a directive from a three judge panel that specified “any remedial plan will need to include two districts in which Black voters either comprise a voting-age majority or something quite close to it.”
“There was never any intent in this building to comply with their court order,” said state Rep. Chris England, a Tuscaloosa Democrat, on Friday.
...
Republican House Speaker Pro Tempore Chris Pringle, co-chair of the redistricting committee, said throughout the week he was prioritizing maps that were “compact and contiguous” but avoided “racial gerrymanders” that he said would violate the state constitution. Pringle said he believed the redrawn lines would provide opportunity for minority voters to elect a representative of their choice in two districts – though voting rights advocates have said models using the three map version finalists do not support that assertion.
State GOP lawmakers acknowledged interest in the remedial map drawing process from Republicans in Washington, DC, like House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California and Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville.
“The journey to finish off the Voting Rights Act through Alabama continues,” England said as he spoke on the floor Friday – just before the state House voted to concur – about his belief that Republicans intentionally designed the remedial map as a vehicle to get back before the US Supreme Court. “I am putting my hopes in the federal courts system and hopefully they will save Alabama from themselves.”
The civil rights groups and individuals who challenged the current map have promised to fight the new version as well. They have until July 28 to submit their objections, and the state can then issue its response before August 4. Then, federal judges will hold a hearing on August 14 to consider them. There is a possibility the panel could reject the map and appoint a special master to draw a new one, if the judges determine the legislature’s map does not comply with the order.
The plaintiffs in Allen v. Milligan released a statement Friday, saying in part, “Let’s be clear: The Alabama Legislature believes it is above the law. What we are dealing with is a group of lawmakers who are blatantly disregarding not just the Voting Rights Act, but a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court and a court order from the three-judge district court. Even worse, they continue to ignore constituents’ pleas to ensure the map is fair and instead remain determined to rob Black voters of the representation we deserve. We won’t let that happen.”

Well shit

[Hazbin Hotel Meta] Alastor’s Ethnicity + An Aside on Human!Alastor
Meta time, lovelies~
(reblogs appreciated! ;w; )
So I've seen Al's ethnicity as a subject of discussion on and off between Twitter and Tumblr, and it’s been coming up more frequently. Being the type of individual that I am, I'd like to chime in with some collected thoughts and theory (of which I hope influences further depictions of Human!Alastor, as currently, he is being whitewashed. I don’t mean this to be explicitly aggressive at all, but I’m being straight up). PLEASE attempt to refrain from knee-jerk reactions or going on the defensive; the latter-most part of this post is meant to raise awareness/start level-headed and respectable discussion. We’re all individuals here fully capable of civil discussion, and with, what I’d like to believe, best intentions at heart :)
ALRIGHT, SO:
To begin, we know for a definitive fact that Al isn't wholly white. VivziePop stated this on 'Vivzie Streem- WHATS IN THE BOX -#7' @ 0:09:48, saying that Alastor is actually mixed (as a mixed ethnicity person myself, I gotta say this was pretty exciting to hear!); this was also listed and cited/sourced via Alastor’s Fandom wiki. Beyond this however, she didn't go into any more detail.
Being that Al was born in New Orleans, and looking at the census data for Louisiana from the very late 1890s through about 1900 or so (imo, the most likely years Al was born. I don’t see him being over 35 years of age), the state was nearly split 50/50 white persons and Black persons (of African descent or otherwise; as the Black ethnic group comprises of more than just people of African ancestry). Urban areas (i.e. New Orleans, his city of birth) leaned more white, but still had a sizable Black population (approx. 1/3 of urban populace from the very late 1890s to ~32% in 1900).
Screenshot below for quick reference [1900], can download and zoom (will include link to full census report via comment).

With this information at hand, it’s easy, entirely reasonable and incredibly likely that Al is half white and half Black. Now, this may very well be the case (and I’d be just as excited if it is), but after a day or so thinking and musing on this theory/likelihood, I came to refine it further. Here, we talk about Alastor having Creole identification.
Now while being Creole (born in Louisiana, which Alastor canonically is) doesn’t inherently denote any certain racial denomination mixed or otherwise, it is not uncommon (to the point of being quite common) to indeed have mixed ethnic heritage. Creoles commonly hail from European (French and/or Spanish, and then later including Irish, Italian and German) ancestry along with Black (Caribbean and/or African) lineage, though it is not particularly rare either to also/instead have Native American, Dominican, or Cuban blood, as well.
It’s again, reasonably likely, that Alastor is more mixed race than simply biracial, given Louisiana’s lengthy and complex (and sad) history from colonial times throughout the 1900s. However, what I am confident in saying, long as VivziePop aims to be historically accurate and just, Al is almost certainly some mix of Black and European at the very least.
This...makes me smile. It really does.
The Status of Human!Alastor
As an Afro-Latinx person myself with close European ancestry (great grandfather and great grandmother on my mother’s side hailed from Ireland and Naples, respectively), it’s beyond cool and validating to see mixed PoC representation especially when it comes to peoples’ and regions that had a lot going on colonization/immigration-wise. The stories of mixed-race people are interesting and fraught with their own complex struggles, especially the further back in time you go. This does lead me back to a frustrating point I made earlier though: depictions of Human!Alastor being whitewashed.
With all the white characters and white-passing PoC characters we have in media already...which is most of them, it’s just...disappointing and (to me) well, as I said, frustrating to see folks just straight up ignore non-white-passing skin and/or features...again. I’m mixed and while definitely clockable as such, am not white-passing; and I think for many PoC of any racial/ethnic makeup, it feels good and is beyond appreciated to see yourself represented.
Now, obviously, this doesn’t apply to people who were not aware of Alastor being mixed, but to folks who did know, and decided to further erase PoC as per usual MO for society, that’s an ‘Oof’ feeling moment...
---------------------------------------------------
Again, this isn’t meant to be aggressive at all, I just mean to 1) meta, of course, but also 2) air some grievances/disappointment. I love, like ADORE this community with all my heart and it has been a blessing to my mental health and creativity, but like everyone else, I have thoughts! And as I’ve happily seen be the case for the most part in this fandom, we can make discussion without getting aggressive or vitriolic ;w;/ (Now if someone comes for you unprovoked and tries to start something off some nonsense, I’m all for being the one to finish it. Don’t ever take any toxic bs from folks, you handle that how you see fit. My 2 cents).
--------------------------------------------------
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING ALL OF THIS AND I APPRECIATE YOUR TIME! I truly hope you enjoyed it and can walk away with some cool thoughts to chew on and, hopefully, a new way or two to approach how you view/create content for a character/s. I do these write-ups and metas not only to get my creative juices flowing, but to also get myself thinking critically, and to get others thinking more critically, too~ If they can bring anything at all positive to the community or get healthy discussion going, I feel more than fulfilled. Thanks again for stopping by!

What Do The Numbers On A Barcode Mean?
As a backup for potential issues, the majority of barcodes show a twelve-digit number, which is often written beneath.
The numbers actually imply the following.
First number: Type of product. Typically, 0, 1, 6, 7 or 8 are used to indicate the type of goods.
The next 5 numbers: The manufacturing code. The product's producer or distributor may be located using the five numbers, which together form a special code.
Following 5 numbers on the right: The product code. The product-specific nature of this portion of the code.
The final number: The check digit (a Self-Policing System). A barcode's last digit is a computer check digit that ensures the code is constructed properly.

Meaning of numbers on a barcode.
A Universal Product Code (UPC) system is used by many goods.
These codes match to a Global Trade Item Number and use a defined barcode symbology (GTIN).
A 12-digit number is represented as a UPC barcode, which adheres to a set of formatting guidelines.
Retailers must seek to join the GS1 in order to utilize a UPC. After that, a manufacturer ID number - the first three digits of the 12-digit UPC - will be given to them.
Unique product numbers are issued to the remaining numbers. When you provide criteria for fields like name, quantity, description, etc.,
GS1 allocates these numbers to your items.
What Does A Barcode Do?
Each component of a 1D barcode, which comprises one digit, is made up of seven vertical modules made up of unique bars and spaces.
The computer reads each of these groups as a separate integer. The number one, for instance, is 0011001 (or a sequence of bars and spaces).
As a result, even though you might not realize it, each barcode has 95 equally spaced columns that each contain unique, in-depth information.

What does a barcode do?
However, there are several varieties of barcodes.
Product identification is done using the most common kind, the UPC, which has a character maximum of 20 alphanumeric characters.
A QR (2D Barcode) code would be necessary after that.
Essentially, a barcode is a way to encode data into a visual pattern that a scanner can read.
They are an efficient way to enter numerical data, thus there is no disputing that they considerably simplify and speed up processes.
Barcoding Systems For Companies
Barcodes are essential for businesses in the delivery and monitoring of goods. Barcoding in inventory management is applied significantly as a barcode can count the items that are stored.
The barcode is used in a variety of businesses, including health care and grocery stores to identify products and categorize unique patient IDs.
Purchasing would undoubtedly be considerably more difficult without the barcode.

Barcoding systems for companies.
Tips: Knowing what data you want to include within the barcode is vital if you want to generate your own barcodes to use alongside or instead of barcodes supplied by vendors.
After defining the information to be contained within a barcode, the precise type of barcode as well as the requisite hardware may be decided.
Keep in mind that 1d vs 2d barcode require different barcode scanner, 1D laser scanner or 2D image scanner.
Conclusion
Barcodes are just a machine-readable image or visual representation of a product identifier that point to information about your items that can help you operate your business more efficiently.
When you finally understand “how do barcodes work”, you'll notice how easy and uncomplicated they really are.

Definition
A data structure is a data organization, management, and storage format that is usually chosen for efficient access to data. More precisely, a data structure is a collection of data values, the relationships among them, and the functions or operations that can be applied to the data.

Data Types and Their Relationship With Data Structures
To answer the question of what is data structure, there are three basic data types to understand.
Ø Abstract.
Abstract data is defined by how it behaves. This type encompasses graphs, queues, stacks, and sets.
Ø Composite (or Compound).
Composite data comprises combined primitive data types and includes arrays, classes, records, strings, and structs. They may also consist of other composite types.
Ø Primitive.
Primitive data is classified as basic data and consists of Boolean, characters, integers, pointers, and fixed- and floating-point numbers.
These data types are the building blocks of data structures.
What Are the Classifications of Data Structure?
Ø Linear and Nonlinear.
Linear structures arrange data in a linear sequence, such as found in an array, list, or queue. In nonlinear structures, the data doesn’t form a sequence but instead connects to two or more information items, like in a tree or graph.
Ø Static and Dynamic.
As the term implies, static structures consist of fixed, permanent structures and sizes at compile time. The array reserves a set amount of reserve memory set up by the programmer ahead of time. Dynamic structures feature non-fixed memory capacities, shrinking or expanding as required by the program and its execution requirements. Additionally, the location of the associated memory can change.
Ø Homogenous and Non-Homogenous.
Homogenous data structures consist of the same data element type, like element collections found in an array. In non-homogenous structures, the data don’t have to be the same type, such as structures.
The Different Data Structure Types
So far, we have touched on data types and data structure classifications. Our walk through the many elements of data structures continues with a look at the different types of data structures.
Ø Array.
Arrays are collections of data items that are of the same type, stored together in adjoining memory locations. Each data item is known as an “element.” Arrays are the most basic, fundamental data structure. Aspiring Data Scientists should master array construction before moving on to other structures such as queues or stacks.
Ø Graphs.
Graphs are a nonlinear pictorial representation of element sets. Graphs consist of finite node sets, also called vertices, connected by links, alternately called edges. Trees, mentioned below, are a graph variation, except the latter has no rules governing how the nodes connect.
Ø Hash Tables.
Hash tables, also called hash maps, can be used as either a linear or nonlinear data structure, though they favor the former. This structure is normally built using arrays. Hash tables map keys to values. For example, every book in a library has a unique number assigned to it that facilitates looking up information about the book, like who has checked it out, its current availability, etc. The books in the library are hashed to a unique number.
Ø Linked List.
Linked lists store item collections in a linear order. Each element in a linked list contains a data item and a link, or reference, to the subsequent item on the same list.
Ø Stack.
Stacks store collections of items in a linear order and are used when applying the operations. For example, the order could be “first in, first out” (FIFO) or “last in, first out” (LIFO).
Ø Queue.
Queues store item collections sequentially like stacks, but the operation order must be “first in, first out” only. Queues are linear lists.
Ø Tree.
Trees store item collections in an abstract hierarchy. They are multilevel data structures that use nodes. The bottom nodes are called “leaf nodes,” while the topmost node is known as the “root node.” Each node has pointers that point to adjacent nodes.
Ø Trie.
Not to be confused with a Tree, Tries are data structures that store strings like data items and are placed in a visual graph. Tries are also called keyword trees or prefix trees. Whenever you use a search engine and receive autosuggestions, you’re witnessing the trie data structure in action. subsets of another.

Machine Learning Datasets Require a Unified Data Format for AI Teams
Even though data is today's most valuable commodity, we continue to process it in primitive ways. For data processing, we need to break free from traditional tools and procedures.
Unstructured Data's Rise: What's the Difference Between Structured And Unstructured Data?
Unstructured data comprises photos, documents, video streams, and other types of data that are not represented in rows and columns. Tables and spreadsheets do not help the human mind make sense of the world. Instead, our brain just accepts data in any form and makes connections.
AI's capacity to interact with unstructured data — data that comes directly from the real world — is critical if it is to approach or surpass human intellect. That information isn't organized into columns and rows. It's unorganized, messy, and getting harder to deal with. This is why creating datasets from unstructured data is so difficult:
• Various file types
• Techniques of compression
• Encoding methods.
• Data types are incompatible.
This is quite inefficient in terms of machine learning. Working with such datasets necessitates significantly more memory and processing capacity than working with more typically formatted datasets.
Large volumes of unstructured data are used to train modern models. As a result, ML cycles are extremely sluggish. It can take months to go from research to production, with a significant portion of that time spent creating and improving datasets for future machine learning training.
The Advantages Of Using A Unified Data Format For Machine Learning Datasets
Imagine being able to combine organized, semi-structured, and unstructured data and process it all at the same time. Isn't that fantastic?
Large volumes of unstructured data are used to train modern models. As a result, ML cycles are extremely sluggish. It can take months to go from research to production, with a significant portion of that time spent creating and improving datasets for future machine learning training. According to research conducted by my company, AI teams can save up to 30% on infrastructure expenses by applying standardization strategies for preparing data for ML training.
All technological advancement has advantages and disadvantages. Let us have a look at them.
Unified data formats enable AI teams to convert any type of data – picture, video, or text — into a mathematical representation that is compatible with machine learning algorithms. This eliminates the need to worry about file formats and libraries. Data will be extracted from the native representation by deep learning networks.
Data scientists can do small-scale studies on their computers and then scale them up using the cloud. This necessitates the transfer of a large amount of data and code. By offering a serverless standard, the Unified Data Format for Machine Learning Datasets simplifies this procedure. The datasets for machine learning can be accessible by anyone.
Data scientists can stream their data for ML training faster, communicate with other teams according to a common format, and implement version control thanks to the unified data format example GitHub code.
They can also filter, query, and change their data considerably more readily. Furthermore, this enables them to link data with other components of their data architecture, such as storage systems, deep learning frameworks, and workflow management systems, with ease.
Creating a Categorization Unified Dataset
In a categorization project, you start by adding input datasets and creating a unified dataset using the Schema Mapping Workflow. The entries in the unified dataset contain data on the logical entity you want to categories, such as customers, goods, parts, or any other key item in your company.
The attributes in the unified dataset are those that best characterize this object across all input datasets and come from various input datasets.
Working With Machine Learning Datasets Can Be Difficult
Let's take a look at the issues that come with dealing with unstructured data. Working with large-scale machine learning datasets is a computationally intensive activity by definition. This procedure implies that you are aware of the order in which you should access your data.
To establish a pattern of access to the data, AI teams must store data. Getting access to individual samples of your data would otherwise take longer than you anticipated. Large volumes of unstructured data necessitate a network infrastructure with high capacity.
Assume your company works with data created by edge computing or is involved in the Internet of Things. In that case, you won't be able to send data in real-time from the edge to a data center at this moment. The developments in 5G technology may be able to solve this problem.
The machine learning industry is heading toward standardization, which means more collaboration, higher experiment reproducibility, and shorter ML cycles. Organizations can more easily move to data-centric AI by combining machine learning datasets into a common data format.
Conclusion
Machine learning is the process with set of data science which approaches the computer to learn from data. By allowing and following this method it brings good outcomes without expliciting the rules to be programmed. With diverse technologies machine learning is included in data science. Week 15 - November 29th - Hocks- Visual Rhetoric in digital writing environments
Hybridity of images and test and juxtapositiong all of them
This week Hocks provided us with an explanation of a framework that can help us read 'the multiple media of texts,'-websites by applying the general concepts of “hybridization”and “juxtaposition” to make sense of visual-verbal compositions. She used the two key terms for describing visual -verbal composition, explaining them through her reading of Anne Wysocki and Christine Boese but the problem is that she gives broad information instead of detailed specific understanding of word-image or media-to-media relations. From the reading I can begin to understand a way to make general sense of the complexity of Web texts.
The hybridity of the Web interface allows Boese to swap different kinds of media—texts, pictures, sounds, links, data sources, and citations in and out of the various sections of the screen and pop-up windows. She juxtaposes textual explanations with purely visual arguments.” An example of her explanation is the website below, which has many tabs, virtual tour of the campus, text and images all in one page. The user has to move from one page to the next.
It reminded me of Bolter and Grusin remediation of media where they discussed hyper-immediacy stating that it is the promotion of the medium that is delivering the stimuli and it promotes opacity. Hypermediacy is comprised of a combination of images and sounds and text and video in order to construct multiple representations within a heterogeneous space. The description that Hocks provide is a standard desktop interface with multiple windows open. I can relate to it as I normally have multiple Word documents, Google search pages, YouTube, Adobe PDFs, and UNM email, UNM learn tabs all open on my computer screen; and sometimes I will be on my phone texting friends and check social media. This experience is constantly mediated, as a user my windowed computer is both automatic and interactive. Hocks states that it is typical of websites and the demands they put on readers like me when we have to move from panel to panel or screen to screen and make sense of the diverse elements in those panels, pages, or screens.

Query Processing In Dbms
Query Processing and Optimization CS1655, Alexandros Labrinidis- University of Pittsburgh! Structure of a DBMS Web Forms SQL Interface Application Front Ends Query Evaluation Engine Files and Access Methods Disk Space Manager Buffer Manager Concurrency Control Recovery Data Manager Files System Catalog Index Files Applications DBMS Database. Query Processing would mean the entire process or activity which involves query translation into low level instructions, query optimization to save resources, cost estimation or evaluation of query, and extraction of data from the database. In an (object) relational database management system (DBMS) query processing comprises all steps of processing a user submitted query including its execution to compute the requested result. Usually, a user query – for example a SQL query – declaratively describes what should be computed. Then, it is the responsibility of the DBMS to.

The APPROX_COUNT_DISTINCT function was added, but not documented, in Oracle 11g to improve the speed of calculating the number of distinct values (NDV) when gathering statistics using the DBMS_STATS package. Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1) documented it for the first time, making it a supported feature. Oracle Database 12c Release 2 (12.2) extends the concept of approximate query processing by the addition of new functions and transparent conversion to approximate query processing.
Related articles.
Approximate Functions
In Oracle Database 12c Release 2 (12.2) the following functions provide approximate results.
The documentation states they 'obtain approximate results with negligible deviation from the exact result'. If you are writing a new query or refactoring an existing query and approximate results are acceptable, you can use them explicitly.
Convert Exact to Approximate
Having the new approximate query processing is great, but what do you do about all the existing code you have that uses the original calls? You could refactor your code, or you could ask Oracle to convert your exact calls to approximate calls instead.
Oracle Database 12c Release 2 (12.2) includes three new parameters that control approximate query processing, which can be set at the system or session level.
APPROX_FOR_AGGREGATION : Setting this to TRUE is the equivalent of setting APPROX_FOR_COUNT_DISTINCT to TRUE and APPROX_FOR_PERCENTILE to ALL.
APPROX_FOR_COUNT_DISTINCT : Setting this to TRUE converts COUNT(DISTINCT ...) calls to APPROX_COUNT_DISTINCT calls.
APPROX_FOR_PERCENTILE : This can be set to NONEPERCENTILE_CONT, PERCENTILE_CONT DETERMINISTIC, PERCENTILE_DISC, PERCENTILE_DISC DETERMINISTIC, ALL, ALL DETERMINISTIC.
We can do a simple test to prove to ourselves this works. Remember, estimated execution plans are not always representative of the actual plans used by a query.
Build a large table.
Turn on the approximate query processing and get the estimated execution plan for a regular COUNT(DISTINCT ...) query.
We can see from the output the estimated plan includes a SORT AGGREGATE APPROX operation.
Create a new session and run the same test without enabling the approximate query processing.
Query Processing In Dbms Mcq
We can see from the output below the estimated execution plan no longer contains the approximate query processing.
Here are some examples of setting the parameters at the session and system level.
Query Processing Steps In Dbms
Query Transformation
If you want to see the associated query transformation you can perform a 10053 trace and look at the resulting trace file. As an example, run the following.
Open the trace file displayed by the v$DIAG_INFO query and search for the term 'Final query after transformations'. You will see something like this.
Approximate Query Processing and Materialized Views
You can use approximate query processing functions in materialized views, which can subsequently be used for query rewrites.
Create a materialized view based on the test table we used in the previous section, using a query containing the APPROX_COUNT_DISTINCT function.
We check the approximate query processing and query rewrite parameters for the session, then check the estimated execution plan for a query against the base table using the APPROX_COUNT_DISTINCT function.
We can see a query rewrite was done to use the materialized view.
Let's see what happens if we use a conventional COUNT(DISTINCT ...) query against the base table.
Query Processing In Dbms Examples
We can see the estimated execution plan used the base table, rather than performing a rewrite to use the materialized view.
This time we will enable approximate query processing and try again.
We can see the estimated execution plan used the materialized view, rather than the base table.
There are some restrictions associated with fast refreshes of materialized views containing approximate query processing functions listed here.

The activities involved in parsing, validating, execution and optimizing a query is called Query Processing.
Steps
The steps involved in query processing and optimization are as follows −
Query Processing In Dbms Tutorialspoint
A sequence of primitive operations that can be used to evaluate a query is called query execution plan or query evaluation plan.
The query execution engine takes a query evaluation plan, executes that plan and produces the desired output. The different execution plans for a given query can have different costs based on the number of disks. It is the responsibility of the system to construct a query evaluation plan which minimizes the cost of query evaluation. This task is called query optimization.
A query optimization is expressed in high level query language and is scanned, parsed and validated. The scanner identifies the SQL keywords, attributes and relation names in the text of the query.
The parser checks the syntax which is used to determine if the query is formulated according to syntax rules of the query language.
Finally, the query is evaluated by checking that all attributes and relation names are valid and semantically meaningful in the schema of a particular database.
An internal representation of the query is then created which is either a tree or a graph known as query tree or query graph.
If the query written SQL is translated into relational algebra, then its internal representation is a query tree. Otherwise, if TRC or DRC its internal representation is a query graph. A graph has many possible execution strategies and the process of choosing a strategy with minimum cost is called query optimization.

Vaccine Access Issues for People of Color – Diabetes Daily

Vaccine Access Issues for People of Color – Diabetes Daily

This content originally appeared on Beyond Type 1. Republished with permission.
By Kayla Hui, MPH
On April 21, 2021, the Kaiser Family Foundation released updated data that found that Black and Hispanic people received a smaller share of COVID-19 vaccinations when compared to their share of coronavirus cases and deaths. Throughout the pandemic, communities of color have borne the disproportionate burden of COVID-19, highlighting the importance of equitable vaccine access. Vaccine access is not only crucial for people of color, but for those with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes. When overlaid with disparities such as implicit bias, it creates a compounded healthcare issue for communities of color with diabetes.
Unfortunately, vaccine access for communities of color has been all but fair. In Arizona, Hispanic people have only received 14 percent of vaccines despite accounting for 40 percent of COVID cases and 31 percent of deaths. And in Michigan, Black people only received eight percent of vaccines despite comprising 23 percent of deaths.
“Because of long standing economic discrimination, communities of color are much more likely to find themselves in jobs where they can’t take off work without docking their pay. They have to work certain hours and aren’t able to get away for a vaccine appointment,” Michelle Andrasik, PhD, clinical health psychologist and affiliate assistant professor of Global Health at the University of Washington, tells Beyond Type 1.
Communities of color have an increased burden of COVID-19 for a variety of reasons including required exposure during work. For Black and Hispanic people, 24 percent were employed by service industries compared to 16 percent of whites. These industries include restaurant, hospitality, and retail work, all of which require people-facing interactions.
People of color are also more likely to live in multigenerational households and in densely populated urban areas and housing situations, further exacerbating coronavirus transmission. In urban counties across the U.S., people of color comprised 56 percent of the population. Additionally, data showed that four in ten Black people (41 percent), Hispanics (38 percent), and Asians (38 percent) lived in areas surrounded by multi unit residential buildings compared to 23 percent of whites.
Another driver of inequitable vaccine access is vaccine hesitancy due to broken trust in healthcare providers among communities of color. Mila Clarke Buckley, a diabetes and food blogger who created the Hangry Woman, was diagnosed in 2016 with type 2 diabetes–a condition where the body cannot properly use insulin. However, after months of failed medications and skyrocketing blood sugar levels, Clarke Buckley discovered—after taking an antibody test with an endocrinologist—she had type 1 diabetes. “I was misdiagnosed with type 2 diabetes which has given me a little bit of distrust in the healthcare system,” Clarke Buckley says.
Clarke Buckley is not alone in her experience. Phyllisa Deroze, a global diabetes patient advocate and blogger, shares that she wanted to get vaccinated, but did not want to be the first due to the legacy of the nation’s medical racism. “The field of gynecology in America was created on the wounds of Black women who were enslaved. And so there’s just really a long history in America of just not treating Black people like human beings and using them as experiments,” Deroze says.
Deroze was told by one healthcare provider that her electrolytes were off, which prompted her to ask her provider for an antibody test. But that provider was offended when Deroze asked to be tested for antibodies. “I was once again denied antibody testing. It was clear that the endocrinologist was offended by me even asking,” Deroze says.
Deroze was misdiagnosed twice for type 2 diabetes, once in 2011 and another time in 2018, albeit having type 1 diabetes. Her misdiagnosis led her to experience diabetic ketoacidosis. “My life was on the line. And that shouldn’t happen,” Deroze says. “If a person is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, what is the harm in testing for antibodies just to make sure you’re treating the right condition?” It wasn’t until 2019 when Deroze was properly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes by her gynecologist
Clarke Buckley also recalls suggesting antibody testing on numerous occasions to medical providers. However, her idea kept getting shut down, putting her at risk for long-term complications as a result of untreated type 1 diabetes. These complications include: foot problems, urinary tract infections, eye disease, skin infections, heart disease, kidney disease, and even death. “It’s communities of color that are subjected to the system that essentially puts us at additional risk,” Clarke Buckley says.
Misdiagnosis of diabetes among people of color is not uncommon and is just one example of the bias of the medical system. Research shows that glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c)—a measure of average blood sugar over three months that can show evidence of diabetes—is not an adequate health measurement for all genetic ancestry groups. Particularly for African ancestry groups, additional screening may be necessary to diagnose diabetes. This leaves hundreds of thousands of African Americans with type 2 diabetes undiagnosed. Additionally, a high HbA1c measurement alone does not prove that a person has type 2 diabetes. It only proves that glucose levels are consistently high. Therefore, an autoimmune antibody test must be done to confirm or rule out type 1 diabetes. Because type 1 diabetes differs heavily from type 2 diabetes in that type 1 always requires insulin treatment, a misdiagnosis could be fatal and lead a person without insulin into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a complication that occurs when the body does not receive enough insulin to break down glucose. DKA can lead to coma and even death.
Some states have made efforts to curb the unequal distribution of vaccines. For example, in Vermont, Black adults and other people of color were given priority status for vaccines. But despite these intentions, many state efforts have fallen short.
Kia Skrine Jeffers, PhD, RN, PHN, assistant professor at the University of California Los Angeles School of Nursing tells Beyond Type 1 that in California, the state distributed vaccine access codes to improve COVID-19 vaccine availability and access for hard-hit Black and Latino communities. “The special code that people of color could use to register to get the vaccine was being distributed among people who were not people of color,” Jeffers says. Instead, wealthier populations who work from home were misusing the system, the Los Angeles Times originally reported.
Anna Lopes, MD, family physician based in Southern California, explains that the underlying culprit of vaccine inequity is systemic racism. Lopes references the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, an ethically abusive study that failed to treat and inform Black men of syphilis in the 1930s and the forced sterilization of Puerto Rican women. “There was significant hesitancy in the Black community, and other communities of color, specifically because of institutional racism,” Lopes says.
Achieving Vaccine Equity
Jeffers suggests that to achieve health equity, health leadership must reflect and have representation from the communities they serve. “If you don’t have community stakeholders involved in the planning, then community perspective is often overlooked or underappreciated,” Jeffers explains.
In addition to having representation in health leadership, Jeffers and Andrasik add that equity involves recognizing and rectifying historical injustices and distributing resources like vaccines to populations that need it the most.
“What we have found in terms of access is that you really have to take the vaccine where people are. We have partnered with Black churches, community centers, and community organizations to open up vaccination sites,” Andrasik explains. “In doing that partnering, the vaccination sites then reach out to their local communities they have long standing relationships with.”
Still, people of color are struggling to access vaccines due to transportation, financial, language, and nebulous registration barriers. To achieve equity, Andrasik, Jeffers, and Lopes stress that states need to be more intentional with their vaccine rollout process to make equity intentional. “All of these access issues really create barriers that are easily mitigated when we really think outside the box and think about how we can do things differently, and in partnership with communities,” Andrasik says. Vaccine access for people of color with diabetes is just the first step toward equity.

Why We Need to be Mindful of Who Programs AI By Adrien Schmidt
One thing Artificial Intelligence can’t be is prejudiced. It should be impossible; machines don’t suddenly decide to hate, they’re all about the facts. But what if the people programming them are prejudiced themselves? A disturbing new report in Science reveals that some are inadvertently doing just that.
Who remembers Microsoft’s Tay, a 2016 chatbot designed to ape the verbal machinations of a 19-year-old American girl? The high-minded idea behind it was to, according to Microsoft, “conduct research on conversational understanding.” But within hours of launching, Tay was claiming 9/11 was an inside job; that Hitler was right and agreeing with Trump’s stance on immigration.
Tay was based on a Chinese chatbot called Xiaoice which has, as of this writing, yet to turn into a racist xenophobe. But Tay wasn’t given any filters and, according to Wired, was the victim of “massive groups of people trying to game it.”
It’s surprising to think that a dispassionate artificial intelligence has exhibited both gender and racial biases but it’s a fact of life – and if we don’t stop the problem now, the implications could be catastrophic.
What Came First: The Chicken or the Egg? Where Did Prejudice Come From?
Artificial Intelligence is moving closer every day to a pitch-perfect state of language cognizance but it is also picking up learned biases. According to Joanna Bryson, a computer scientist at the University of Bath, “A lot of people are saying this is showing that AI is prejudiced. No. This is showing we’re prejudiced and that AI is learning it.”
The issue at stake seems to be buried inside a machine learning tool known as “word embedding” – something that would ultimately enable machines to acquire common sense and logic, two core elements that define humanity. Word embedding is so important because it helps computers better understand and make sense of language.
But it’s word embedding that also leads to some serious issues. The process itself creates a numerical representation of language, taking the meaning of a word and then distilling it into a word vector – which is actually a series of numbers – based on all the other words that appear most frequently with it. As the Guardian puts it, “Perhaps surprisingly, this purely statistical approach appears to capture the rich cultural and social context of what a word means in the way that a dictionary definition would be incapable of.
So far, so good. But the Science report reveals that implicit biases – the same ones that can be found in human psychology experiments – are easily soaked up by algorithms. For example, words like “female” and “woman” were seen to be associated with arts, humanities, and the home – whereas “man” and “male” were more closely associated with engineering and math.
Worse still, it was found that European American names became associated with more pleasing words like “happy” – and African American names had unpleasant connotations. And this puts Artificial Intelligence in danger of following Human cultural biases and becoming filled with the same social prejudices.
This is nothing new. ProPublica commissioned research into risk scores assigned to over 7,000 people arrested in Broward County, Florida, from 2013-2014 and checked to see “how many were charged with new crimes over the next two years.” The first issue they found was that only 20% of the people who the algorithm predicted would commit violent crimes did so. But racial disparities appeared: “The formula was particularly likely to falsely flag black defendants as future criminals, wrongly labeling them this way at almost twice the rate as white defendants.” In fact, white defendants were mislabeled as a low risk more often than black defendants.
So how do we combat and stop this bias that algorithms are picking up? Sandra Wachter, a researcher in data ethics and algorithms at the University of Oxford, says “We can, in principle, build systems that detect biased decision-making, and then act on it.” Wachter, who has suggested establishing an AI watchdog adds “This is a very complicated task, but it is a responsibility that we as a society should not shy away from.”
Wachter, along with Brent Mittelstadt, and Luciano Floridi comprise a research team at the Alan Turing Institute in London and the University of Oxford. They have issued a call for a trusted third party that can look into AI decisions for those who claim they’ve been discriminated against by them.
Indeed, the pitfalls that errors in artificial intelligence can bring about include the loss of jobs and drivers licenses; some have lost access to the electoral register and still, others were chased erroneously for missing child support payments.
Does Government Need to Intervene?
Some people point to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as something that could turn this around, seeing as how it’s being set up to combat problems like this. Unfortunately, for now, at least, the GDPR doesn’t go far enough.
“There is an idea that the GDPR will deliver accountability and transparency for AI, but that’s not at all guaranteed. It all depends on how it is interpreted in the future by national and European courts,” said Wachter’s colleague, Brent Mittelstadt. All the GDPR currently has the ability to do is offer up a “right to be informed” which would force companies to reveal an algorithm’s purpose; the sort of data it utilizes to make decisions; and other fairly basic information.
Luciano Floridi, the third member of the research team, agrees. “We are already too dependent on algorithms to give up the right to question their decisions,” he said. “The GDPR should be improved to ensure that such a right is fully and unambiguously supported”.
This all stems from accountability and transparency by design. We as entrepreneurs and business operators need to take responsibility. This responsibility was brought to my attention by Nozha Boujemaa, author, and Advisor to the CEO of Inria in data science.
“You think that when you say ‘yes’, it will be taken into account, and when you say ‘no’,” that it will actually happen,” says Boujemaa talking about terms and conditions, adding, “But, through recent studies conducted in France, some applications, no matter whether the answer was ‘yes’ or ‘no’, the location of an individual was still taken into account. Therefore, the consent was not respected because of an economic reason, or it could be due to technical failure.”
It’s going to be tricky going, that’s for sure. Jürgen Schmidhuber, scientific director of the Swiss AI Lab Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence acknowledges that you can’t eliminate all forms of bias and instead suggests ensuring humans design the task well. But that’s much easier said than done.
Maybe we need to figure out how to stop being so unconsciously prejudiced ourselves first.

Essential Details For - Most Recent Suggestions
The content following next on the subject of a Network Marketing In UK is amazingly attention-grabbing. You should give it a look.
The Top Tips About Network Marketing Can Be Found In The Below Article
Network marketing can be a difficult industry for many marketers to succeed in. Like any other industry, network marketers require extensive knowledge on how to keep up with industry trends and make the best decisions for their businesses. The information in this article contains many of the tips network marketers need to succeed in today's business environment.
Stay away from projects that require you to pay to get in. If you have already paid up then the person doesn't have any real motivation to work with you or help you succeed. They will just get busy pulling in the next person to pay in. Work with people who will have to work with you. One of the best ways to succeed in network marketing is to emulate what the most successful members of your upline organization are doing. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Instead, study the techniques of the leaders of your upline, and then implement those same techniques. Following proven leaders can help you find success more quickly than trying to figure it all out on your own. Don't give away all your secrets, yet. Your network marketing materials should entice the reader into wanting to know more and taking the next step to seek out the information you provide on your website. If someone takes the time to visit your site, they're showing they have the drive to actually be a part of your business.
Network marketing success is dependent upon being positive. Without a positive attitude and excitement about your product, the referrals and clients will not join. The toughest clients that you will encounter are going to be the first ones. After those, the rest will follow and it will be much easier as long as you stay positive.
If you are into network marketing, and are feeling stuck, make sure to ask for help. You may not know anyone personally doing this, but if you see someone that is successful, take the time to compliment them and ask them how they learned. People love to talk about their success, and you will find it very useful. Get yourself listed in business exchange newsletters, papers, and magazines. Where I live there is a magazine available in every mall, subway, and office building which is called the Business Xchange. It allows businesses to swap contact information with a little blurb about what they do, and this can build both your network marketing downline and give you access to people who can help you in other ways.
It is important to value your hourly rate in network marketing. When calculating what strategies work, include the time it takes you to implement the strategy. Include driving time, phone calls made, emails sent, and hours to create the content. Then calculate how much you're ACTUALLY spending on that marketing and see if the leads it brings are worth the amount spent.
High pressure is a poor tactic for selling, and a poor tactic for network marketing recruiting, too. Good marketers pay attention to their potential recruits and always look out for signs of discomfort. The recruiting pitch is dialed way back when recruits become uncomfortable. A manipulative, high-pressure pitch is usually more likely to lose a recruit than to bring them on board.
You might have the right ideas about marketing and even the right drive to potentially succeed as a multi-level marketer, but your success is actually contingent on your knowledge of the business in general. That's why it's always important that you work hard to learn about different ways to market. Apply what you've learned in the above article.
