i dont wanna sound like a person thats like “if a character is mean then theyre written poorly” but truly what makes or breaks a villain to me is whether or not youre supposed to find them complex and well intentioned deep down and they obviously arent

#idk what it is abt dr connal from reborn tbh bc like. TECHNICALLY the game doesnt try to say he was a well meaning person #or that his tragic backstory inherently means he was good deep down or anything #i think part of what ruins him is just his entire character just being made up for shock value and depth was forced on him out of nowhere #and also that multiple characters use him as a way to say ''uwu everyone deserves forgiveness and trust no one deserves what he went through #i mean like. i LIKE vengeful villains. i like characters who are evil out of revenge or pettiness #and have vicious acts of evil that solidify them as an antagonist #and yes i do like villains that are well intentioned deep down and arent just static villains who were born evil or something #but like... idk connal doesnt feel like that he feels like a character that youre meant to find compelling and tragic even if hes a villain #but bc hes a literal child abuser who is heavily implied to have SA'd one of his child victims all attempts to paint him as tragic are hollo #really reborn overall is a game that desperately wants to portray itself as deep and complex and mature #but in actuality is just pretentious and shallow with a moral that aligns itself more withgoddamn barney the dinosaur #which is ''uwu everyone deserves forgiveness and youre mean if you don't forgive. everyone was just sad!''#echoed voice #sorry for the reborn posts. eve is replaying it so its on the mind
