It’s been a while since I read a Dune book. I stopped reading the series after Children of Dune, the concluding book in the original Dune trilogy. I loved the series, but felt a drop in quality after Dune Messiah and the drop continues with God Emperor of Dune. SPOILERS GUARANTEED BELOW. 

First of all, the 4th book takes place 3,500 years after the events of the 3rd book. In addition to that, book three kind of jumped the shark based on what I’ve been used to with the Dune.

Throughout the entire three books we were exposed to all types of science fiction concepts, light speed travel, prescience, cloning, giant sandworms, a spice that controls the known universe, and a toddler with the memories of her ancestors that acts like an adult.

He enacted a plan called “The Golden Path” that would ensure humanity’s survival throughout time. His plan spans more than 3,500 years and with God Emperor of Dune we get a glimpse of the final year of Leto II’s reign. Since the 4th book took place 3,500 years into the future it was hard to overlook the lack of detail about the universe Frank Herbert brought us into. Herbert had always been great at describing the landscape, the people, the institution, and the world that Dune takes place in. However God Emperor of Dune is the opposite of the usual Herbert. A majority of it takes place in dialogues with less and less descriptions of the world. It’s upsetting that he’d make us fall in love with Dune, jump us 3,500 years, and give us scraps of the future Dune world. On top of that, all the main characters of the past are dead except for Leto II (I forgot to mention that he’s kind of immortal and survived all those 3,500 years) and the million clones of Duncan Idaho that Leto II had manufactured to breed the Atreides and Idaho blood together.  So with the 4th book we’re starting off fresh with Leto II, whose become a god character with little physical and intellectual flaws, leading humanity into a new era. It sounds better than it reads. The actual movements of the book are about Duncan dealing with Leto II’s questionable rule and Siona, an Atreides descendant also rebelling against Leto II’s empire.

So this puts the plot at a terrible place. We have Leto II as an infallible, but intriguing character. He’s enamored by an Ixian ambassador (who was manufactured to charm Leto II). The romance feels forced and Hwi herself is a flawless character but understanding of the crushing isolation that Leto II has dealt with since he’s set humanity on the Golden Path. 

Hwi also falls in love and charms Duncan and they later have an affair that Leto II finds out about. There’s no real punishment for this for either Duncan or Hwi. Hwi makes it known to Leto II that she still has physical urges that Duncan can not satisfy. Leto, after 3,500 years, has slowly turned into the primordial form of a sandworm. He is gigantic in size compared to humans and has lost all his human organs and shape except for his face. Since he has no genitalia, he can’t satisfy Hwi even though they’re due to be married.

This style of dialogue has gotten tiresome since we’ve seen it for four straight books now. We’re kept in the dark with Leto II’s plan until the end.

Duncan is the best of the cast because he’s been cloned for thousands of years. However his memory goes as far as his initial death in the first book, meaning he always has to be reintroduced into the world. His cloning is done without his own permission and he’s forced to play apart in Leto II’s plans. Duncan is the closest we get to a true protagonist because of the tragic manipulation of his life.  He carries a hardy allegiance with the Atreides but soon finds out that Leto II is not governing like a true Atreides would. His disagreement with Leto II leads him on a quest to assassinate the God Emperor worm with the help of Siona. It wouldn’t be the first time Duncan tries to kill the emperor either which is how his previous clones have died.

Siona is a new Paul Atreides. She’s the capable, rebellious, and the resilient leader against Leto II. She understands how Leto II has put the universe into a box and hindered everyone’s freedom through his governance. Leto II allows her to play a role in the rebellion because she’s the key to the future. Through coercive measures, Leto II finds a way to make Siona try the spice and she experiences the Golden Path. Siona, convinced of his path, joins him as the commander of his military army known as Fish Speakers (who are all women). 

Duncan and Siona never suffer. No one really suffers throughout this story which is why it plays so slow and dragging. We don’t feel any urgency in the story because of the way Herbert structured it. Threats feel small because of the omniscience of Leto II. 

What obstacles does Duncan face? Trying to understand Leto II’s plan for the most part. He has no solid objective in front of him because he’s confused for a majority of the story. It’s not until the end that when he teams up with Siona that we see him form a plan and get excited to see it flourish or fail.

Siona is similar. While she does have an obstacle, which would be defeating Leto II it’s never expressed through her lens. All we see is how Leto II crushes her revolts and prepares her for his trial that leads to her consuming the spice. We don’t see her making an individual plan until the very end with Duncan. 

The ending assassination involves Siona and Duncan betraying Leto II’s trust that Leto is either unable to foresee or allows to happen as part of his grand plan. In the process they kill his to-be wife, Hwi, and drown Leto II in water which is now a poison to him because of his sandworm body. It turns out to be the best part of the novel because it gives us Siona and Duncan taking agency for once from beginning to end and getting the result of Leto II’s demise.

However the ending isn’t enough to make up for the event-less and shallow feeling that the entire book gives me. The novel raises plenty of philosophical messages as it strays away from ecological focus that the first three Dune books are known for. 

And that’s another magical factor that is now lost in the series. It’s no longer about terraforming the planet and helping the Fremen survive. It’s about helping humanity survive. By expanding the breadth of House Atreides’ goal and removing the ecological interest in Dune, we get less than before.

I can’t feel for the struggle of humanity’s survival as I did with the Fremen survival in the first trilogy. I got to know the Fremen up close through the eyes of Paul which made me care in the first place. Herbet’s book is a fantastic take on humanity’s longevity as a race, but it doesn’t give me a reason to care. Since the novel unfolds through the all-seeing eyes of Leto II, readers become observers rather than participants. The story develops through conversations 90% of the time and, even with Herbert’s philosophically juicy dialogue, it leaves me of more substance.

Do I love the world and politics? Yes. Do I love/hate the characters of Dune?No. I feel indifferent to most of them aside from the Han Solo-esque Duncan Idaho and that means that Herbert failed to give captivating characters to drive the story.

I don’t know if I’ll read the 5th or 6th book. Those book enter into a different plot arc than did the first four. I’ll likely just read other works by Herbert because for me the series has taken a fall that it can’t recover from.

NES Switch Online - The Launch Games

While Nintendo’s new paid online service isn’t making everyone happy by any means, I personally generally appreciate what the company is doing with its retro catalogue this time around, if not necessarily the speed at which it’s doing it. The NES Switch Online app, along with whatever similar apps come down the road, could finally give us a sort of Netflix for classic games. The biggest issue, as I see it, is the way Nintendo plans to distribute the games, with 20 NES games available at launch and a few added every month thereafter. It’s going to take a while to even build up to the Virtual Console libraries found on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, let alone the salad days of the Wii Virtual Console. 

Still, this does provide a means for people to discover and play games they may not have tried before. If you subscribe to Switch Online, you’re getting all of these games no matter what. With the slow pace of releases, you might be inclined to spend a little time with each one that comes. Or you might just ignore the whole thing, I don’t know. Anyway, I thought what I would do is to give a little run-down of each game that comes to this app, with a new write-up corresponding to each month’s releases. These aren’t going to be in-depth by any means, but hey, it’s something to read, right?

1. Donkey Kong

Well, it’s the NES version of Donkey Kong. Seemingly obligatory, but it very well may be the least necessary of the whole lot so far. It’s not so much that it’s a bad game of Donkey Kong, but with the more complete arcade version available on Switch through Arcade Archives and the fact that this NES version is so utterly commonplace among Nintendo’s many retro re-issues, it’s hard to get excited about it. Turn-based multiplayer means the online play isn’t worth a lot here.

One Good Thing: It’s short and sweet.

One Bad Thing: That missing stage rankles.

2. Mario Bros. 

Compared to Donkey Kong, this is a better port of a worse game, but Mario Bros. can still offer a good bit of fun for one or two players. It’s another common re-issue that has its arcade version already available on the Switch, but the online play and the fact that the NES port isn’t missing anything big the way Donkey Kong is means that if you want to play Mario Bros., this is a perfectly good way to do it.

One Good Thing: Mario’s controls are a bit more forgiving in the NES version.

One Bad Thing: It gets repetitive quickly.

3. Baseball

I’m sure Baseball has its fans, but I can’t say I’m one of them. There are better baseball games on the NES, and I suspect we’ll see some of them eventually added to this app. It can be fun with a second player if you’re in the right mood, but it’s not very enjoyable in single player at all thanks to the merciless CPU. I suppose it’s good that Nintendo dropped a bunch of the “black box” releases into the launch line-up, though, so that they won’t be taking up valuable slots in the monthly releases from here on out.

One Good Thing: It captures the basic feel of the sport.

One Bad Thing: The CPU opponent is a bit too strong.

4. Tennis

This has aged a little better than Baseball, but it’s still about as basic a take on the sport as you can get. It’s another example of a game that can be a little fun with a second player, but isn’t all that great if you have to match up against the nasty CPU opponent. It’s a slightly rarer sight in Nintendo’s retro re-release initiatives than some games, so I guess it’s nice to see it here in that sense.

One Good Thing: This isn’t too far from today’s tennis games.

One Bad Thing: It can be tricky to gauge elevation and distance.

5. Excite Bike

Excite Bike is a game that I didn’t think much of back in the day, but have come to appreciate quite a bit. There’s not a lot to it in terms of content, but it feels good to learn and make use of the game’s mechanics. It mostly comes down to regulating engine heat and making sure you hit the ground running after each jump, but it’s all nice and satisfying once it clicks.

One Good Thing: The controls are fantastic.

One Bad Thing: The course-builder just doesn’t live up to its potential.

6. Balloon Fight

A shameless clone of Joust? Yes, but a very well-made one. Balloon Fight is an enjoyable arcade-style experience and even offers a nice two-player mode to play with a friend. The Balloon Trip mode gives you something different to do with the skills you learn in the main game, giving you something to come back for. Balloon Fight is a pretty common sight in Nintendo’s retro initiatives, so there’s a good chance you already own this somewhere. Nevertheless, it’s worth playing, so it’s worth including here.

One Good Thing: Balloon Trip makes for a great score attack experience.

One Bad Thing: There isn’t enough meat on the bones to fully satisfy.

7. Ice Climber

Extremely common and not that great of a game, Ice Climber is not the strongest reason to fire up this app, to say the least. I can see what the game is going for, but it just feels clunky and rough in a way that few Nintendo games do. Oh well, it’s here, and that means it won’t be taking up a slot later. Unlike, say, Urban Champion. Now that’s going to be a terrible month.

One Good Thing: There are a lot of cute details in the graphics.

One Bad Thing: The collision detection on ledges is hard to read.

8. Soccer

Interestingly, every region got the same line-up of games this time around. Soccer probably wouldn’t have made the cut for the American service if that weren’t the case, but I’m sure it has its fans in most other regions. This is again a case of an okay sports game that got greatly outclassed by future releases on the system. Some fun with a second player, but not much more than that. Still, it’s not something we see in every bundle of Nintendo classics, so welcome aboard, I guess.

One Good Thing: It covers the basics well enough.

One Bad Thing: It doesn’t really capture the feel of soccer.

9. Super Mario. Bros

A genuinely great game that I’d reckon every Nintendo fan has already bought numerous times. It had to be here, and I’m glad it’s here. Now I can stop trying to put up with Vs. Super Mario Bros.’s nonsense every time I want to scratch my Super Mario Bros. itch while playing my Switch. You’ve played it before, but let’s be real: you’re probably going to play it again.

One Good Thing: Plenty to enjoy at a fast pace or slow crawl.

One Bad Thing: The castle mazes.

10. The Legend of Zelda

I’m actually a little surprised that Nintendo put this one into the launch line-up. The Legend of Zelda is another one of those games everyone has bought and played many times, but it definitely qualifies as a big gun that could carry a month if it had to. I still really like this game a lot. It’s tough, and if I didn’t already know where almost everything is I might not be as forgiving of its vague nature, but I never have a bad time replaying it.

One Good Thing: The dungeon designs are great.

One Bad Thing: The hints can be pretty opaque.

11. Gradius

Gradius is an excellent shoot-em-up, and although the NES wasn’t going to be able to do an arcade-perfect port on its best day, this version is more than good enough to do the original justice. It’s a good pick for a third-party title for the launch of this app. It hails from fairly early in the system’s life, but quite playable today. Also frequently re-released, but worth a spin regardless.

One Good Thing: Having a full set of power-ups feels awesome.

One Bad Thing: It’s really hard to get back on track after dying.

12. Ghosts ‘n Goblins

This port, on the other hand, could probably have been better. Micronics did some lousy work on the NES in general, and I suppose by that developer’s standards Ghost ‘n Goblins turned out alright. It doesn’t look great, but the gameplay is more or less what it should be. It’s another common re-release, but people seem to enjoy banging their heads against it. A nice starting point for Capcom releases in this app, if nothing else.

One Good Thing: The variety of stages keeps things fresh.

One Bad Thing: The qualifications for seeing the true ending.

13. Pro Wrestling

A bit of a rarity as retro re-releases go, Pro Wrestling was a Disk System game in Japan that was converted to the cartridge format for international release. While it’s part of the “black box” series of early NES releases, it actually came out years after most of those games in Japan, and it really shows. The gameplay has enough depth to be enjoyable in single-player, and it’s terrific fun with a friend. A nice choice for the starting line-up.

One Good Thing: The character designs are outstanding.

One Bad Thing: Some of the moves are useless.

14. Ice Hockey

Ice Hockey always seems to get left out of Nintendo’s retro re-releases. It might be due to the relatively niche appeal of the sport, or it could be because it was a Disk System game in Japan. It’s too bad, because it’s probably the best hockey game on the NES. Not that that is a particularly difficult achievement or anything, mind you. Hockey is one of those sports that works very well when you simplify it down to basic rules, however, which is probably why hockey video games got better earlier than those of most other sports. Love, love, love that Nintendo included this right from the start.

One Good Thing: You can customize your team, if only a little.

One Bad Thing: Goalies can’t do anything on their own.

15. Double Dragon

This is a weird port of Double Dragon, but it’s a good game in its own right. The slower pace and odd inclusion of added platforming segments make it feel quite distinct from the arcade version. This version is notable for not allowing two-player simultaneous play in the main gameplay mode, which kind of contradicts the title, and the experience point system for unlocking your full set of moves doesn’t work out the way it was probably intended. You do get that weird pseudo-fighting game where you can face off against a buddy, at least. A good choice for a third-party title for the app’s launch.

One Good Thing: Billy’s full move set offers a lot of depth.

One Bad Thing: No two-player mode.

16. Super Mario Bros. 3

This is another one I’m surprised Nintendo didn’t hang onto for a rainy month. But I’m happy the company got it out there right away, as it’s something most players likely already own and have played many times. Even those who have little fondness for the NES generally admit to an appreciation for Super Mario Bros. 3. It plays as well as any Mario game from recent years, so it’s easy to see why it’s held in such regard. I’ll certainly be playing it again. And again. And again.

One Good Thing: It’s full of ideas to an embarrassing extent.

One Bad Thing: Special suits are too scarce to fully enjoy.

17. Tecmo Bowl

Much as Soccer is to Americans, Tecmo Bowl is to the rest of the world. It probably wouldn’t be included in the European and Japanese line-ups if they weren’t all using the same games, since American football is very much localized to North America. Unlike Soccer, however, Tecmo Bowl is still a pretty fantastic representation of the sport. There are better games, even within this series, but licensing makes a lot of them tricky to re-release. This is another common pick, but it’s one that few people would complain about, I think.

One Good Thing: The method of choosing your plays is brilliant.

One Bad Thing: If you don’t know the rules of football, good luck.

18. River City Ransom

With Double Dragon already here, Nintendo definitely could have sat on this one for a bit if it had wanted to. I find it interesting that a game that was definitely considered niche in its day outside of Japan has become a de facto part of just about every collection of NES games, but River City Ransom deserves that recognition. This is probably the most fun you can have with a second player simultaneously in the initial selection of titles. It’s one of most enjoyable multiplayer games on the system, period.

One Good Thing: The RPG and action elements balance well here.

One Bad Thing: There are some technical issues when things get busy.

19. Dr. Mario

Dr. Mario is here. Dr. Mario is always here. Well, what can you do? Tetris involves licensing, so if you want something that was reasonably popular along the same lines, you’re going to end up with Dr. Mario. It’s a little bland compared to some other falling-block puzzle games, but it will occupy your time if you need it to, and its head-to-head versus mode is certainly a blast. 

One Good Thing: The music is excellent.

One Bad Thing: It lacks the tension of many other puzzle games.

20. Yoshi

On the other hand, compared to Yoshi, Dr. Mario is absolutely amazing. Yoshi is part of that elite group of Nintendo’s NES releases that seem to get re-released every time even though not many people care about them or enjoy them. I don’t care much about Yoshi, and I do not enjoy it. At least it won’t be taking up a future release slot.

One Good Thing: The graphics are cute.

One Bad Thing: It’s crushingly boring.

Looking at these 20 games, I think Nintendo made some generally good picks. I would have liked to have seen an RPG make it in, but that’s not really in Nintendo’s hands, I suppose. There are enough big games here that the company could get away with shoving in a bunch of simple or mediocre games that would have been a harder sell as part of the monthly drops. It definitely could have been better, but it surely could have been worse, as well. I’ll be back tomorrow to look at the just-released October batch of games, and from there on, I’ll try to get these out day-and-date with each new drop.

COMPARISON: HONDA GRAZIA VS SUZUKI ACCESS 125 VS TVS NTORQ 125

love scooters. I go fast on them, they're super handy in almost every way and perhaps the highway is the only environment that defeats them. And off-road. And one has to with sheer speed and displacement and the other, suspension. While the Honda Activa rules their roost with authority on all counts, the Suzuki Access 125 has carved out a cozy little place for itself and it hasn't gone unnoticed. The excellent Honda Grazia arrived a few months ago with swish styling and a 125cc engine and now the TVS NTorq 125 is here as well. The Aprilia SR 125 is also a challenger though it isn't in this story directly. In any case, the SR125's fate is a bit sealed because it's priced so close to the SR150 that I cannot imagine who wouldn't just pay the difference and get the better scooter of the two in the first place. So. The 125cc scooter king is the Suzuki Access and its challengers are the Honda Grazia and the TVS NTorq 125. Let's have some fun, shall we?

Design, build quality and finish

Unlike motorcycles, the Honda Activa set such a high bar for overall quality that all the scooters that have followed it have been of a very high build and finish level in general. The ones that don't get telescopic fork front suspension tend to clatter over the bumps more, but at the end of the day, scooters in general are extremely well-made in India. The Suzuki Access 125 is exemplary on this count. The gloss of the paint, the fit of the panels... the closer you look, the better this Suzuki looks. The TVS NTorq 125 though, matches this move for move. And the Honda Grazia is no wilting lily either. This is how pitched battles should be fought I say! On the build and finish front, the Grazia feels perhaps a hair less well-built - in the sense that in five years it feels like it will have more rattles than the other two but it's a minimicronanomicron of a difference, to be honest.

Then comes the design. And Wow. What a difference! The Suzuki Access 125 plays the Honda Activa's game. It's unisex, sleek and meek in a uniquely Japanese-Indian way. It makes no enemies and there is no one I know who calls it the best looking scooter on Earth either. Suzuki could have been more adventurous with the new generation of the Access in theory but as the Honda Activa 5G demonstrates amply, don't fix what isn't broken is a powerful design philosophy for Indian products.

The Grazia looks sleek and modern, especially compared to all of the scooters Honda makes, including the Dio. The aggressive front apron is the busiest of all three and the side panels and the rear treatment also use the same combination of sharp creases, and taut curves to present a sleek, fast, fresh and modern stance.

But between the yellow colour and the high contrast body panels, the Ntorq is easily the sportiest scooter in design and it looks freshest as well as sharpest. I think some of this perception comes from the fact that the Grazia chooses a horizontal headlamp alignment and a wide apron versus the TVS that opts instead for a more vertical headlamp set in a narrower front apron. The kink and the lack of curves on the front mudguard, I think, adds to that sense of purpose for the TVS too.

Design is subjective and the build-finish levels are even. So I clearly prefer the sporty intent in the design of the Ntorq 125 to both of the others, but I'm going to call this even. And I will say this once again, choosing a vehicle based on its design shouldn't come from the road test, it should come from your aesthetic sensibility.

Features and convenience

In terms of feature set, all three scooters are very similar at the basic level. Let's tackle the three-four things that implies one at a time.

Floorboards are the primary storage area on a scooter and they get used more often than the underseat storage in the big picture. On this count, the Access has the largest one - it doesn't want to be a sporty scooter, remember? The Grazia comes next - it's a Honda. It presents the idea of sporty, but it doesn't want to be too sporty. The TVS is, naturally, the last on this count. It's a narrow footboard with the side front panels coming back inward as sporty scooter styling requires that further hems the footboard in.

The underseat storage is heavily used and here it flips all the way to the other side. I was carrying around a 10-litre bag, an insulated flask of water, a puffy jacket (compressible volume) and a fairly thick fleece pullover (non-compressible volume) for this test. The 10-litre bag had to go on the footboard in all cases. The four things sat tightly in the Grazia and closing the seat was a bit of a challenge. But the other two swallowed the quartet whole easily and the TVS actually has - surprise - the biggest and most useful underseat cavity. And the little courtesy light is a boon and much appreciated.

The seat release and fuel cap are an integrated part of using scooters and here the TVS and the Suzuki have an edge of the Honda. The Grazia aims to reinvent the seat release by adding a key-unlocked switch for this. Unfortunately, it's fiddly and it appears to remain locked despite you having completed what appears to be the right sequence of fiddling. This is unnecessary! The Suzuki has the easiest seat release integrating everything into the ignition slow and adding a magnetic lock cover to boot. The TVS uses a simpler mechanism by allow the key hole on the side panel to rotate one way for the fuel cap and the other way for the seat release.

Who wins? It's a tie between the Access and the NTorq. The Suzuki's seat release is easier and the foot board is larger. The TVS NTorq 125 has more space under the seat and it's fuel cap doesn't require you to dismount and open the seat.

The brake lock lever is the final feature I want to talk about. The Grazia has the worst one here. It's a wierd little metal 'stick' that you pull up to lock the brakes. It feels cheap, underdesigned and not all in keeping with the design of the scooter. The Access has a decent one but the little locking lever on the NTorq is by far the easiest and most satisfying to use. The brake lock is an essential part of automatic scooter safety and you absolutely must use it if you're parking the scooter with the engine running. The NTorq also has the digital connectivity features that permit you to sync you phone to see incoming calls, navigation prompts and more. These features are, at this time, not available on any scooters or Indian-made motorcycles.

Ergonomics

A separate section for ergos? Well yes. Just to clarify that all three should fit everyone easily, short or tall. If you're six foot or over though, watch out on the Grazia, the handlebar is very close to your thigh though it never touched or interfered on the test. The Ntorq, despite its narrow profile and sporty looks actually has the biggest gap from thigh to bar but it feels like the longest reach to the ground for your legs as well.

Engines and performance

The Access 125 has been the winner for a long, long time on this count. The way it handled the trifecta of acceleration, economy and refinement has won it many comparos as well as fans. And the Honda Grazia doesn't beat it. It gets to 60kmph 0.2s later, stops a smidge quicker and they both return roughly the same economy too. The NTorq, though has both their numbers. It's quicker to 60s by 0.2s again over the Access (almost half a second over the Grazia!), produces the quickest, most consistent stops and has the best city economy too.

Dominant performance? You don't know the half of it. On our test, the Grazia felt the most leisurely of the three 125cc scooters by some margin. The rider had to work hard to keep up with the other scooters whether taking off from the lights, accelerating past other traffic or cruising out on the highway (yes, we did that too). The Access is great fun in comparison. The combination of that engine in that meek-sleek body is always a surprise. It's like an athlete wearing a Kanjeevaram. You never quite expect it to lift up the hem and sprint off into the distance. The transmission seems a bit more alert, the engine is audible - the Honda is almost whisper-quiet until you're maxed out - and the Access doesn't mind sitting at max speed for minutes on end either. The Grazia will show you a faint amount of strain when maxxed out.

The Ntorq though raises the bar. Not by a huge margin, but you'll notice the gap. It's quicker in every single situation - traffic, empty city roads, traffic lights, highway cruise, and overtaking. There's a thoroughly enjoyable engine note right through and when ridden flat out, it gets near its top speed more rapidly and stays there happily too.

I've had some great rides on the Access 125, both the first generation and the second, but the TVS Ntorq's pace and poise elevates the experience. This is wonderful! I remember saying that TVS should have taken a firmer stand and created an even more sporty package. Well, hats off engineers! This is about as close to real world sporty as I can imagine that won't make anyone think it's too hardcore for them. It's right on the edge and kudos to you for finding this balance with such accuracy! So much praise? Read on.

Ride and handling

The Ntorq is a heavy little scooter and to be honest, TVS' explanation for the weight makes me think that this scooter could easily have been 7-9kg lighter. Ooh, there's that tingly feeling again. But part of its performance advantage - despite the weight - comes from its suspension setup. The Ntorq 125 has the savviest suspension setup in the scooter business right now. It feels stiff initially but you notice that it isn't harsh. But slowly it dawns on you that the Ntorq is very much like, wait for it, the Honda Unicorn! I rolled my eyes when I wrote that too. It feels stiff but when the bumps larger and larger, you begin to feel how supple it is and that's a delicious surprise.

Because now the slim performance advantage of the engine is compounded by the fact that you don't have to back off for the bumps quite as much. It's these two things that make the Ntorq notably faster in the real world than the other two.

And of course, it handles really rather well. The 12-inch wheels and sticky TVS rubber make this the most cornerable scooter in this class. On a good road, the SR150 might have its number with its 14" wheels, but in the real world, the SR150's stiffness will cause it trouble.

Where does that leave the other two? Behind. The Suzuki Access 125 feels quite a bit stiffer in comparison to the Ntorq and it absorbs less. It still corners with great aplomb and confidence and it's still very much a brilliant all-round scooter. In fact, we jumped at the chance to ride a base drum brake model - all of our previous rides were in the disc-alloy model. I'm happy to report that the front drum may not have the power of the discs on the other two but the Access stops very well indeed.

The Grazia, predictably, is the safest setup of all. It handles bumps well and it goes around corners well too. Unfortunately, despite the sleek looks and sporty intention, the chassis is the old Honda Activa 125-based number and that isn't a sporty platform.

In dynamics terms, the Suzuki Access 125 was already a solid scooter and it remains one. But TVS has really taken the sporty 125 scooter thing seriously and the Ntorq is easier to rider faster than both of the other two.

Verdict

The Honda Grazia is third, then. As it happens in the scooter segment, there are hardly any scooters you can label as not worth buying. Which is most excellent from a market quality perspective. In the case of the Grazia, it has a handful of features you should look at carefully. Honda has the biggest network of these three companies so service will be easier to, er, access. The Honda also has the only LED head light in this trio and in the night that does make a significant difference. The Honda, though, is the most expensive scooter here. Prices start at Rs 59,752 (ex-Mumbai) and go to Rs 64,124 for the top model in the pics. Both the other scooters are roughly Rs 1,000 less expensive and the gap widens a bit further in on-road price as taxes are added on. To wit the top Grazia at Rs 77,996 is Rs 6,641 more than the disc Suzuki Accesss 125. There is a Special Edition Access that's closer - Rs 4,656.

The Special Edition trim adds matte paint, contrast red seat and chrome mirrors to the disc-alloy model. So at prices starting at Rs 55,996 for the drum brake edition and topping out at Rs 62,962 (ex-Mumbai) the Suzuki Access is the most affordable scooter here. The Suzuki Access 125 is still the scooter to buy - and I mean the whole of the scooter market including the 110s - if you have trouble convincing your family about sporty scooters. The Suzuki blends practicality and unisex styling with a genuinely fun riding feel and for a scooter, enjoyable performance. The Suzuki's downside is that the styling is a little too staid for youthful buyers and the company has the smallest service network of all three here.

The TVS Ntorq 125, through, is the best all-round scooter money can buy in the country in our books. It looks great, has solid performance as well as refinement, it's dynamic package is unmatchable in the real world and it's priced well too! At Rs 63,256, the TVS Ntorq 125 has only the one all-bells-whistles model. It's Rs 870 cheaper than the Grazia and Rs 2,000 more approximately than the Access 125 (disc). Nicely done, then. TVS are the past masters in benchmarking and beating the competition. We know this. Usually, their products arrive towards the end as each niche or segment fills out. But the Ntorq 125 arrives at exactly the right time and while the SR 125 is definitely a sportier, more youthful scooter, the Ntorq nails the balance between real-world ready and meeting the promises its sporty design makes. That's a runaway winner, despite the slightly contrived name.
