Confessions of a former EXO-L

Dear EXO and fellow EXO-Ls,

Back in August 2014, I started being an exo fan (the fandom name was not even formed yet, so we remained nameless and often referred to ourselves as exotics). I was a 2nd-year college student slash EXO fan. I got roped into EXO because of my little sister who happened to be watching the GROWL MV that time. I was instantly hooked by the lively music and the powerful choreography, it was so catchy that i asked her to play it again and again. That’s when I started noticing the boys’ faces. Damn they’re all good-looking, but they were so manyyyy, It was literally a struggle to pinpoint who was who, i often mistook one member’s face with another. IT WAS THAT HARD, especially for a first time kpop fan. EXO is my bias group and remained my ONLY BIAS GROUP for the whole duration that I was a kpop fan. 

At first I was just mesmerized by the catchy tune and the dance, but let’s be honest, it was their faces that sealed the deal for me. I don’t remember now when I actually started doing my research, searching for the members profile, memorizing their faces and watching their previous MVs. I don’t remember when I started really liking EXO, to the point that I considered myself a fan. 

But it just happened. And i’m really glad it did. EXO and fangirling became my lifeline. I was recently out of a one-year relationship that time and EXO has helped me move on. I was distracted by the boys, their music and the dances. EXO healed my broken heart. EXO helped piece back a part of me that I thought had died together with my failed relationship. EXO has done a great deal of making me happy on those dark times. EXO became my new reason for living. 

So my journey with EXO started! From watching their mvs on repeat (it was only mama, history, wolf and growl at that time), to listening to their album tracks, to watching interviews and their individual debut teaser clips. When this wasn’t enough, I searched for more content that I could find. I literally scoured the internet for more EXO. 

Until I came across fanfics. To be honest, at first, I loathed the idea of ships and OTP. I cringe when I think of it. But watching several fan account videos has made me the exact opposite of what I told myself I wouldn’t become. Boy i was so wrong about that. The next thing I new, I was the biggest selu/kaisoo/chanbaek shipper (the big 3 ships T^T)!! Their skinship and interactions were everything to me that I don’t mind taking it to the next level, which was reading fanfictions. If my memory serves me right, the first ever exo fanfic that i have read was Anterrograde Tomorrow. This thing had been all over my tumblr feed that I got really curious what this shit is about. I kept seeing the quote, “See you tomorrow, hyung. Don’t forget!” everywhere. On memes, on edits, on FMVs. Like what is this about?? So I gave it a try. And fuck. I have never been more wrong in my entire life. I WAS A WEEPING MESS AFTER. The whole story stayed with me for weeks. I was fucking depressed, that I decided to look for crack/fluff/romantic fics to get over this feeling. This was how reading exo fanfics became a habit. I have read a lot of fandom classics that I’m sad to discover have been taken down by their respective writers now. It was good (heaven) while it lasted. I have read A LOT of exo fanfics to last me a lifetime, i’m not even kidding. This was how I spent my whole semester break. Cooped up in a corner, reading whilst crying from the angst/laughing my ass off/melting with so much fluff/and falling in love with EXO even more.

I was there when their first variety show aired, EXO’s Showtime. I can still remember the 18 year old me who diligently waited every week for translated episodes. This show has brought me to EXO on a more personal level. This is when I found out that I don’t love EXO because of their faces, I love EXO because they are a bunch of dorks and the biggest softies. OT12, We Are One, has been ingrained in my mind and my heart. 

I was there when they received their first ever Daesang Award. I could not get more proud of these boys! November 22, 2013. These guys deserved all the love and support in the world and this award is a proof of all their hard work. 

I was there during the MID Era. It was my first comeback (not technically comeback) as an official exo fan. And boy, Christmas Day was my favorite track from that album. The hip sways and the suspenders, i can’t even!

I welcomed the new year (2014) with EXO in my heart. I started buying exo merch, from posters, stickers, t-shirts and whatnot. My whole house was plastered with their posters, every wall that is available, I have EXO’s faces staring right back at me. Sadly, I cannot buy albums that time because I’m still in school and I don’t have the ability or the money to purchase one for myself. 

I was there during the Overdose Era. Every EXO fan has been anticipating this comeback because ever since GROWL was released, it brought along a lot of fans, including me. 

I was there when the first major EXO scandal happened, the sudden disappearance of Kris and his lawsuit against SM. Boy, I don’t even want to remember the feeling. It was like a part of me had died when this happened. I don’t want to admit the rumors and I kept praying that this was all a cruel joke and he’ll be back soon. I remember crying on the floor and praying and praying. But he didn’t. 

Their first concert here in the Philippines, EXO was now OT10.

Yeosang stared out of the barred window from his place in his bed. Dark circles surrounded his dark eyes and bruises and scars littered his exposed arms from times that he took his anger out on himself. His lips were cracked from a lack of water; Yeosang refused to drink the water from the mental institution because of its taste. 

Outside of his room, Yeosang could hear the laughs, screams, and cries of his fellow patients at the Seoul Institution for Mental Health. Yeosang has been here for the past five months and would continue to be here until he was no longer deemed a threat to society.  Today is Tuesday which means that it is visiting day, a day that comes twice a week at SIMH (Tuesdays and Saturdays) but never seems to fulfill its patients’ constant need to see their loved ones.

Yeosang’s mom and brother always come to visit him on Saturdays. His mom always sits next to him and holds his hand and strokes his hair while his brother talks to him about his niece and nephew and things that are going on in South Korea. His brother always manages to dodge news about you but Yeosang understands. It’s probably for his own good. 

Yeosang continued to face the window, even when he heard someone walking down the hallway; even though everyone else was in the main room, Yeosang figured that the person who was walking around wasn’t coming for him. Suddenly, a soft knock against his open door broke Yeosang out of his trance. 

“Yeosang, you have a visitor,” Miss Sori, Yeosang’s favorite staff member said, a sweet smile on her face. Yeosang turned from the window to look at her, a confused expression on his face. 

“I do?” he asked, his voice weak from disuse. Miss Sori nodded and gave a sweet-sounding mhm. Yeosang moved from his bed and put on his hospital socks, meeting Miss Sori at his doorway. She bent her arm so that there was an open space for an arm to go through, offering the arm to Yeosang. “Shall we?” she asked, looking at him expectantly. Yeosang slipped his arm through the loop and gave a small smile. “We shall.” he said. 

Sori and Yeosang walked through the hallway and into the common room where there were many small groups of people visiting with their loved ones. Miss Sori pointed to an empty table that sat near the edge of the room. “Sit there and do not face the door, alright?” she said. Yeosang turned to look at her in confusion but Miss Sori looked at Yeosang with a certain look that told him not to object. Yeosang shuffled across the room and made it to the chair that faced away from the door and sat down in it. 

“Where is Yeosang?” Yeosang heard a familiar voice say. 

“He’s over there, he just sat down.” Miss Sori said. Suddenly, the sound of rubber-soled sneakers moving against the hardware floor filled Yeosang’s ears and became louder and louder. Yeosang kept his eyes low and looked at his hands which were laying in his lap. 

You sat down in front of him and leaned back in the weighted chair. “Hey,” you said. Yeosang’s head snapped up at the sound of your voice. You took one look at him and said, “You really look like shit, Kang Yeosang.” which caused him to laugh. 

“You look different too,” he said. In truth, you did. You had a new ear piercing, your hair was cut into a bob and was a newly-dyed dark red, you had a small heart tattooed on the outside of your left hand, and your style had changed. 

You nodded. “That’s what going home does to you.” 

“Why are you visiting me?” Yeosang asked. “I thought you were still in (your home country) and that you wanted nothing to do with me.” he finished, a surprised tone in his voice. 

“I was in a place like this for a few weeks after I got home. Everyone I’ve met in this country wanted me to go to an institution in South Korea but I didn’t want anyone to recognize me or try to talk to me or get information about me regarding what happened so I waited until I got home to get help. Here in South Korea, I’m a foreign K-pop idol who was abducted by a crazed fan. In (home country) I’m just a person who was abducted in another country by a stalker. No one knows who I am at home, and it’s nice.” you say.

“You didn’t answer my question-”

“I’m getting there. I feel like you should know not to cut me off by now but it’s fine. We haven’t talked in a year. As I was saying though, I suffered from a lot of PTSD and anxiety and after a really bad break, I was sent to an institution. I was put on some medicine and I saw a therapist and things started to suck less. This experience led me to a question which led to me wanting to seek closure regarding this entire situation.” you said before pausing to lean forward in your chair. 

“I remember in the trial that the defendant said that you stopped refilling your medicine and seeing your therapist and psychologist about a month after Paradigm debuted. You said that you stopped taking it because you felt like you didn’t need it anymore because you found a new source of happiness, me.” you said. “Yeosang...you weren’t just taking medicine for depression. You’re delusional and you were taking medicine to decrease the amount of delusions. Why did you stop taking your medicine? This whole thing could have been avoided if you had just taken your medicine.”

“I have a very unhealthy obsession with things,” he started. 

“Clearly.” you said, causing him to sigh. 

“I see you still haven’t lost your sass,” he said as he rubbed his forehead. You shrugged. 

“Sass keeps me alive.” you respond. 

“Like I was saying, I have a very unhealthy relationship with things. I depended on my friends to keep me happy after my medicine stopped helping my impulses but when they failed, Paradigm had just debuted and I saw you as a way to divert my attention away from my mental issues but because I wasn’t focusing on them, they got worse.”

“But I don’t understand why you didn’t just visit a psychiatrist to try new medicine or change something about the way you were living,” 

“Like you said, I’m delusional,” he sighed. 

“Like the prosecutor said during the trial, ‘Your mental health doesn’t excuse what you did to me. It might have helped create the idea but it was your true self who abducted me.’” you said as you rested your arms on the table in front of you. 

“I’m sorry that I did what I did to you,” Yeosang said, reaching across the table to touch your hands. You moved your hands to your lap under the table. 

“We aren’t friends, Kang Yeosang. We haven’t been friends and we never will be friends.” you tell him firmly. He nods sadly. 

“Yeosang...I just came here to receive an answer to my question. I...I don’t think I’ll be back here again. Maybe we can meet under better circumstances in a different life or maybe we have a better relationship in a different dimension. But in this life and in this dimension, I don’t want to build a relationship with you and I refuse to.” You stand up and pull your cardigan around yourself.

“Have a good life, Yeosang.”

“Digmies! Look who’s back in South Korea!” Minami yelled into her phone. She turned the phone to face you and you waved. 

“Hello!” you said with a wide smile on your face. 

Comments began to speed across the VLive screen. 

“is that who i think it is?”

“(y/n)???????”

“we missed you!!” 

“are you guys gonna have an ot10 comeback soon??” 

“is a paradigm form debut coming???” 

“she’s back!!” 

“It’s been a while Digmies!” you laughed. 

“We missed her a lot!” Minami yelled and kissed your cheek, your eyes widening. 

“Hey! Minami!” you exclaimed as you chased her around the dance practice room.

“Set the form! Hello, we’re Paradigm!” you and groupmates greeted your audience before sitting in your seats. 

“Paradigm is back with all of their members in their new title track ‘Got This’ and full studio album Re:Zume. Ladies, can one of you tell us about your new comeback as well as your concept for this album?” the host asked.

“I can do it!” you say you raise your hand eagerly. The host nods and gestures for you to speak. You turn towards the audience and smile brightly.

“‘Got This’ is an upbeat song about doing something that you’re afraid to do or that you feel that you can’t do. One of the central song lyrics is, if my members can help me,

‘You got this (”Got this!” your groupmates sang enthusiastically.)

Go do what you want to do!

Live your own life

And do the things that are good for you.’” you rapped lightly while smiling. Your groupmates laughed and clapped and the audience cheered along with them. 

“During the time that I was...apart from my group, I would say ‘You got this’ to myself very often. The second part of the song came from an interaction with someone while I was apart from my group. He wasn’t living his own life and doing things that would help him,” you stated. “If he had...we probably would have had a comeback earlier.” you laughed slightly.

“But overall, I feel like it’s important to know that everyone has the power to make a positive change in their lives. You can pass that test; you can lose that weight if you want to lose it; you can get that date; you can get that job; and you can love yourself, even if it seems like you can’t right now. Everyone is capable of great things. You got this!” you state. 

“I think that’s a beautiful statement, (Y/N),” the host smiles. “I think after that explanation, we should see the performance! What does the audience think?” the host asks. The audience cheers in response.

Breaking: Paradigm Member (Y/N) Has a Boyfriend

Paradigm’s fifth youngest member and member of the sub-unit Paradigm Form (Y/N) was in the press not too long ago after a heart-wrenching abduction court case. However, the young woman is in the press for a new reason, a relationship. Her boyfriend, Choi San, an up-and-coming choreographer who received his start from his YouTube channel, is very smiley when talking about her as seen in the videos below and (Y/N) seems to be just as happy when he is brought up. 

Her company as well her groupmates, fellow idols, and television personalities are very supportive of the relationship. However, there has been some negativity surrounding the relationship. How do you feel about the relationship?

oh cool! a performance of Naughty Boy with Yan An! the audio quality’s not great and the mics are maybe a little too sensitive, you hear lots of breathing lmao, but anyway. i’m still really new to Pentagon, so i had wondered about this. cause like, everyone speculates about which lines were originally Edawn’s (definitely the Kino bit at the beginning and the Shinwon “just eat your chicken” thing for sure, both of them sound like theyre doing Edawn impressions, but theres possibly more), but Yan An also wasn’t in the song. he was on hiatus anyway though right? like he probably didnt have lines written for him, unlike with Edawn and his sudden unexpected removal from the group. but of course, Yan An was back not long after, and he must have performed it a lot during the Shalala era too, so i wondered what that looked like. during Shalala i guess he could have just taken Kino’s parts since Kino was injured then lmao, but before and after it they had to perform the song with 9 members. i wonder if that’s why Yan An’s voice is included in Humph, so that when he’s better again he has parts mapped out already. i wonder why he keeps getting injured or sick, too... maybe it’s a chronic thing, man that would really suck....

so but anyway, even though we’ll never see an ot10 Naughty Boy (maybe), it’s cool to see a 9-member version. Yan An took Shinwon’s part where he hits Hongseok with an invisible golf club and Kino’s part right before Yuto’s rap verse

they also do Critical Beauty, with Yuto doing Edawn’s part in the rap alongside Wooseok, and Yan An doing his part (i literally didnt even realize that part was Yan An until literally literally right now lmao. in the music video it just doesnt show anyone singing, in the choreo from live stages at the time it’s Hongseok and i guess i just didnt even think about it lol... same with Yan An’s parts in Humph, i just didnt question that that’s not what Yeo One’s voice sounds like lmao)

then they do Shine and I already knew that Wooseok does most of Edawn’s parts, though they look happier in this video than in the performance i saw of the switch previously, so that’s good.

Pentagon must just be so used to rearranging parts in singing and in the choreo by now... like when Kino got injured they were probably just like “welp, here we go again. here’s this this and this change and boom there we go, easy”, especially since Kino was the choreographer anyway haha. If I was in the group I’d just practice every part since bad luck seems to fall on them a lot and i would wanna outsmart fate

30. Heroine – Sunmi

I hesitate to call Sunmi feminist – does she consider herself one? Can k-pop really be feminist? – but her matter-of-factly, eyes-wide-open songs that touch on the position of women in relationships and in society are the closest thing to genuine female empowerment I’ve seen in k-pop. It doesn’t hurt that every single one of her songs is amazing.

29. Bboom Bboom – Momoland

Considering I usually hate “viral” songs – I’ve been brainwashed to like Gangnam Style just recently – I’m still shocked at how much I love Momoland’s Bboom Bboom. I’m also proud to say that I was an early adopter of the song, and watching their success skyrocket made my Q1. I’m still not tired of the sax line and of the “GREAT!” shouted during performances. This song (and Momoland, really) is just irresistible.

28. Retro Future – Triple H

The last ever song by Triple H (anger abounds) is just a taste of the genre-bending, sound-mixing, absurd-lyric-writing that we could have gotten for many years. Their retro-future has nothing to do with the Jetsons, and much more with insane 80’s synths and, well, that sexy vibe.

27. Love Shot – EXO

Well, EXO, that was last minute. My ambivalence towards EXO is represented by this song, which I both find ridiculous and adore at the same time. This song’s luscious synths and layered vocals make it elegant, then the performance makes it kitsch. I don’t know if I’ve been brainwashed, but it’s so great.

26. Not That Type – Gugudan

A thousand times yes for Gugudan doing edgier concepts. Not That Type is the spiritual successor to A Girl Like Me, and it’s almost as good. This song, however, is even tougher and more explosive. The new 8-member Gugudan is off to a great start.

25. Beautiful Feeling – Day6

Yet again, it’s my special skill to ignore all the popular songs that a group has, and in this case the rock vibe that defines it, and pick the sweetest, mellowest song they’ve put out. Day6 make some amazing power ballads, and Beautiful Feeling gives me warm and fuzzy feelings every time I listen to it.

24. Dinner – Suho ft. Jane Jang

I don’t know how the powers that be decided that this duet should happen, but the result is everything. Jane Jang’s one-of-a-kind voice layers beautifully over Suho’s, who ended up being often overlooked as an EXO vocalist for all these years.

23. Remember Me – Oh My Girl

Every single Oh My Girl put out is juicy in its on way. They may always go back to their foundational dreamy pop, but they never fail to throw in a twist. Remember Me’s EDM flavour and heavy rap are a total change from Secret Garden, but the song still blossoms into a romantic, airy chorus, and all of the members find something to sink their teeth into.

22. La Vie en Rose – IZ*ONE

My resolve to ignore the existence of IZ*ONE (and survival show groups in general) faded at the first two octaves of La Vie En Rose. This song does so much with so little: the atmosphere it creates, and the contrast between the powerful pre-chorus and the understated chorus are what makes the song for me. In the meantime I’ve started to learn their names, so I’m doomed.

21. I Want You – SHINee

SHINee’s constant stream of releases this year is at the same time a new beginning and the beginning of the end. It’s hard to imagine that a whole year has passed since Jonghyun, and it’s hard to think that the group has survived even though these songs are concrete proof. I really struggled to make it through the more melancholy songs, so I picked I Want You out of a series of basically perfect tracks.

20. LATATA – (G)I-DLE

I would be surprised if there was a single Boombayah lover who didn’t love this song. It has the same (pseudo-Indian?) influences, the same rhythms, the same anthemic quality. Latata is catchy, hypnotic, fun, and showcases all the members equally (ok, maybe Soyeon a bit more than everyone else). This is a textbook debut for 2018.

19. 1, 2, 3! – Seungri

Here’s someone who usually did club music and for once didn’t, and I loved it anyway! 1,2,3!  is retro, guitar-led and much more lighthearted than anything Seungri has ever done. It’s lovely to see a less sultry (and a biiiiit slimy?) side of him. Also Anda.

18. 22 Century Girl – fromis_9

I feel that my obsession with fromis_9 is still at its earliest stage, and that by the end of 2019 I will have gone totally mad for them. I am in love with their singles – To Heart, Love Bomb, what instant classics! – but the whirlwind of sounds of fever dream 22 Century Girl have stolen my heart.

17. Blue Moon – Gyeong Ree

Another one for the theme of this list: house! Give me all of it in your pop songs! Here’s hoping that Gyeong Ree (wasn’t it easier when she spelled it Kyungri? Anyway) continues her solo career with such intriguing, sophisticated but super-fun songs.

16. Stay Here – Sojung

I don’t know exactly, but I cry my eyes out more often than not when I hear this song. Ladies’ Code’s Sojung’s voce is as light as a feather, until it explodes in the soaring chorus. Everybody knows that I love any power ballad, but the complex emotional balance of this one is just on another level.  

15. Now or Never – SF9

I can’t say I’ve been following SF9 as idols, but I have been listening to all their releases and they have given me nothing but quality. I know I complain about songs with drops, but the deep house (yep, again) and that sensual “jealous” have been killing me ever since they came into my life. It might be my favourite hook of 2018.

14. I Love You – EXID

I was a bit taken aback by EXID’s Lady earlier in the year, but it was love at first listen with I Love You. The distorted hook opens and holds together a song that has all the best of EXID, including Solji, who has returned stronger than ever with flawless vocals and zero shame.

13. Dejavu – NU'EST W

You guessed it – house. Nothing has given me as much joy as the rise of NU’EST W, and I’ve been even happier because they did it with superb, incredibly on-trend songs while retaining the dark charm of their pre-success material. They really leaned into the “sexy bandit” thing, and I’m all for it.

12. Oh! My mistake – APRIL

This song is fluffy and super-poppy and at the same time side-eye in music, if that was ever possible. The super-innocent and cute concept that APRIL have been doing since forever is now tinged with tongue-in-cheek sarcasm, and a little creepy synth that perfectly matches the theme of the track. It’s so addictive and so delicious.

11. Snapshot – IN2IT

I love when smaller groups do really, really great and out of the box stuff instead of copying their more successful peers. I’ve watched countless performances, entranced by the bass that opens the song, holding my breath for that “heartbeat go fast, heartbeat go slow”. This is one sexy song, and IN2IT are one good rookie group that I will keep my eye on.

10. Timeless – NCT U

Leave it to me to find the most niche release a super-popular group has had, and fall in love with it so deeply that the rest (most of which I hated, not sorry) doesn’t count. NCT are too big of a group with some really, really good singers hiding in the back line while the rappers swagger about. I loved that some of them got their chance to show off and I adore this poetic, heartbreaking song.

9. Shine – Pentagon

I have to wonder if this song would have been higher in my charts if it wasn’t for the bloodbath that was of Pentagon and their career after this song came out. It’s such a pity that such a feelgood song has become, well, not so feelgood. This song’s wonky piano riff and anthemic chorus are still a delight, and their personality really shines (LOL) through. OT10 forever.

8. The Grand Dreams – Minseo

Where did Minseo even come from? Why hasn’t she been here our entire lives? Her dreamy vocals have been giving me life this year, and her refined musical sense (or of her producers, really) is a breath of fresh air when everything gets a bit to same-y in k-pop.

7. One of Those Nights – Key ft. Crush

Key came in last minute and slapped us all in the face with a perfect album that is reminiscing of SHINee’s work from earlier in the year, but also shows his personality as an artist. The lead single One of Those Nights moves fast and interweaves the melancholy of the lyrics in the music. Both Key and Crush are shockingly good vocalists, but together they just make each other shine even more.

6. Allegro Cantabile – Nature

Random music terms / Italian? I had to check it out. Nature put out something that’s a musical number, j-pop anime opening and k-pop bubblegum all in one. Their vocals are amazing and they are adorable. I’m excited to follow them into 2019.

5. DDU-DU DDU-DU – BLACKPINK

Is this Blackpink’s best offering? No. But what does it say when your not-best is still miles ahead of the competition? 4. Puzzle Moon – GWSN

This song is so good. These girls are so good. As I put together this list, I realised how much all I wanted in 2018 was a good deep house sample, and GWSN delivered. The bass contrasts elegantly with the tiny voices, and the obscure chorus – “make it moon” – emphasizes the magical atmosphere of this song.

3. Air – Winner

I miss old Winner. New Winner’s YOLO swag annoys me at best, so I dig through their b-sides in search for what we lost when Taehyun left. Air’s appropriately breathy chorus and gentle, romantic atmosphere did it for me and managed to put Winner on my podium yet again. Good job, Winner. Now stop it with the tropical house.

2. KILLING ME – iKON

The year started well for me (and everyone else) and iKON with Love Scenario, but I had no idea of where it would bring us. Killing Me’s bitter, moody atmosphere made for the dance song of my dreams. The decisive beat and array of distortions somehow create an eerie, understated atmosphere. It’s a dance song, but make it sad and a little creepy.

1. Oh My – Monsta X

I know. I am annoying myself by picking a b-side as my favourite song of the year, but here we are. Monsta X have become one of my very favourite groups and, while their album songs have always been amazing, to me Oh My summarizes everything I love and everything I want from them. In a year of minimalism, it’s loud, larger than life, unafraid of bleeps and bloops, rich in both vocals (Kihyun!) and proper rap sections. It’s the powerhouse that I expect from them and I hope to hear again and again.
