The writers forgot this and it’s evident in the script notes where she is called a “Stark loyalist” at the council meeting. Gwen said in an interview that becoming Lord Commander was like a job promotion but I think that’s really just her trying to come to peace with a shit script she initially admitted she was unhappy with (mentioning being reduced to tears over Jaime leaving Brienne). Being a chaste bodyguard wasn’t what Brienne wanted - she wanted to be a lady knight and with the man she loved

in their own show she says 'I don't serve the Starks I serve Lady Catelyn' I just can't be copingggg w this 😭😭😭

but yeah I don't think the show can really comprehend that Brienne has wants at all, besides 'to be good at her job'. that's probably part of why so many people rejected JB having sex, they're like 'excuse me you're telling me Brienne wants that?? that Brienne wants to be loved??? I thought she just wanted swords?? and an abstract sense of honour????'

obviously there was a load of misogyny mixed up in that reaction too, but it's also kind of what you get when you march your character around like a little plastic soldier with no job but to stab and ascend through the ranks
