Re: your P/V translation rec - When I wanted to start reading Master & Margherita I went looking for translation forum discussions as usual and the overwhelming conclusion seemed to be that they sucked all the fluidity and enjoyment and subtlety out of the works they translated and were why many thought they didn't like Russian lit in school until they read a dif translation later in life, so I'm surprised to see you recommend them so effusively. What about their work stands above others to you?
Yes. We had yet another critic, at the very beginning, an old Russianémigré lady. When we first told her we were translating The Brothers Karamazov, she said, Oh,Dostoevsky, I hope you correct his awful style. I said, No, that is preciselywhat we’re going to keep. - Richard Pevear, in this dope ass interview for The Paris Review
Thisis a good question.  I think mypreference might come down to the fact that I read the books in Russian beforereading the English translations—remember: Russian language uses something like20%  fewer words and has a wealth of compounds,i.e. in English you have “corrode"; our equivalent is raz’est’ which breaksdown to ‘around-eat’ (raz=around; est’=eat). With that in mind, a lot of translators, wary of being too repetitive,either get too liberal with the synonyms or gloss over important parts of thetext—that arguably creates a sense of consistency for nonRussophone readers, but at the expense of critical aspects of the original work.
Meanwhile,P&V translations are like when you transpose a violin concerto to flute* (thekey changes but the phrasing remains the same)—I respond to that because it fundamentallypreserves the nuances in music that I already love.  I’m not sure if I’d feel the same way if they were my first introduction to Russian literature.
*Briggs’translations are like really good covers of a song, and on the other end of thespectrum, Garnett’s may as well be Kidz Bops.

han’s Entire Thoughts and Feelings on Dreamcatcher’s “Deja Vu”
youtube
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
MY TIME HAS COME 2.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FULL INSOMNIA MODE DONT. LOOK. AT. ME.
there are no read mores here so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ALRIGHT SO-
THE SONG OKAY LETS JUMP RIGHT INTO IT i wasnt expecting something lowkey sad BUT im not mad at it!!!!!!!!!! i had conflicting emotions when i desperately wanted to cry but also headbang?????? HOWEVER thanks to force and air the tears in my eyes were drying as i headbanged- LIKE this song really PUT ME THROUGH IT like that chorus didnt have tO DO ME LIKE THAT™!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT THEN THE VERSES AND THE PRE-CHORUSES WERE SLOW (and the bridge but bridges be like that in nearly all songs) WHICH IM ACTUALLY REALLY INTO it was like being in a roller coaster with the verses being the slow hill and the chorus was the fall THAT PIANO GOES HARD...................... but like in a soft way????? DONT ASK ME WHAT IM SAYING IS IM A HOE™ FOR PIANO THOSE DRUMS DURING THE CHORUS STOP IT I CANNOT I FELT THEM VIBRATE THROUGH MY BONES
like i DEADASS have nothing to criticize or change about this song its PERFECTLY FINE AS IT IS (except for like more gahyeon and dami????? pls??????)
siyeon starting the song.......................... thank you.............. I STILL STAND BY SAYING I WOULD LISTEN TO HER VOICE FOR LITERALLY FOREVER HER VOICE DURING THE CHORUS QUEEN OF SINGING CHORUSES OH BUT THEN THAT HIGH NOTE ARE YOU KIDDING ME??????? SHE DIDNT HAVE TO KILL ME LIKE THIS BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH I- and now....... im in the deja vu P L E A S E
gaaaaaaaahhhyeeeeeooonnnn her voice is so pretty!!!!!!!!!!! BUT I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!!! HOWEVER youre the second one to sing with this beautiful gentleness of a part and to be honest this part paired with siyeon starting it really eases you into the song and its quite the blessing to hear thanks- and then yknow this part right after handong........................... Heaven™
SPEAKING OF HANDONG LISTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE AMOUNT OF LINES SHE HAS MAKES ME WANNA CRY OKAY THIS PART RIGHT HERE............................. PLS.............. (i think its just me but theres a smaller voice singing like right under her voice????) HER PRE-CHORUS PARTS ARE LITERALLY THE BEST PARTS IN THE WHOLE SONG TO LISTEN TO pls believe me when i say this its NOT bc shes my ultimate bias like i genuinely like her parts the most
sua pls i was already prepared for softer vocals and you really gave that to me and then this is absolute perfection they were beautiful and amazing OF COURSE got me feeling like i was floating on actually clouds god TAHNK YOU AND THEN YOU JUST HAD TO HIT ME WITH YOUR PART RIGHT HERE???? i understand its just the chorus but I Felt That™ okay!!!!!!
JIU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i stand by saying how your voice be powerful as hell still even during these lines VERY short but VERY effective and very good leading into the chorus i love- and then your bridge....................... B I C T H really put me in my feelings but i welcome it with EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING and with open arms.......................
YOOHYEON AKA THE OTHER QUEEN OF SINGING CHORUSES I MEAN..................................... I LITERALLY DUNNO WHAT TO SAY!!!!!!!!!!! LIKE THEIR BEAUTIFUL SOUNDING HER VOICE GOES WELL WITH THEM like i really like the parts she sings after siyeon like................. Y O O F if a feather became a voice-
i need more dami too..................... P L E A S E like obviously with their other songs i was expecting dami to be in the second verse and with a smooth rap section and the former was correct HOWEVER to my pleasant surprise SHE SANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! her singing voice suited this SO MUCH and im actually glad there wasnt a rap part at all in this song especially that SECOND PART.................. Heaven™ 2x
my favorite lyrics (x): i know i said handongs were my favorite to listen to but i like these lines dont hurt me
난 이 숨결이 허락되는 날까지 As long as I can breathe 다신 너를 놓을 수 없어 I can’t let go of you again 우린 모든 순간 함께 할 테니 We’ll be together for every moment 내 곁에서 beside me
THE DANCE OKAY IM GONNA DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT ill be referring to THIS PERFORMANCE can we pls talk about how loud the fanchant is im crying and really take it in and all of their talented glory ANYWAY OF COURSE the choreography F UKCING SLAPS just so many different position changes and just alwaYS SO IN SYNC WITH EACH OTHER ITS INSANE ill just list them briefly and keep the points short this is long enough:
THE BEGINNING AND THE END BEING THE SAME...................... CERTAINLY DEJA VU-
SIYEONS TUTTING THING THANKS
handongs majestic spin
this and this with how the formation changes and how their arms swing AND the kick
ALSO in those parts in the last bullet i dunno why but i like that move jiu does when she sings IT HITS
i recall sua spoiling literally the first move of the chorus dance in that vlive THE CHORUS DANCE ALL THOSE FORMATION CHANGES LITERALLY MESS ME UP and THIS most important move in the entire choreography and they line up and its SO COOL to look at
when they lie on each other doing yoohyeons lines
handongs part again when theyre in the line and how satisfying it is to watch
THE ENTIRE BRIDGE
LITERALLY THE ENTIRE DANCE FROM START TO FINISH
QUEENS OF STABILITY
sidenote: can we talk about how handong and dami?????? literally spin during their parts????? and they sounded super clear??????
THE VISUALS SO.......................... if you had asked me two days ago (maybe a little bit of yesterday) about how i felt about this video.................. i wouldve mentioned some unpopular opinions regarding the videos look............ i mentioned to gwen @loonapunk that i wasnt TOO into it............ BUT- after finally sitting down to do this long ass post i dont hate it!!!!!!!!!!!! i think bc i have to remind myself that this song (album???? well song-) is for that kings raid game and all the visuals AND story are based off that????? i dunno BUT WHAT I DO KNOW IS I LIKE TO WATCH IT
IM TOO BIG STUPID™ TO COMPREHEND THIS STORYLINE AND COME UP WITH MY OWN THEORIES EVEN NOW AND I WOULD L O V E TO EXPLAIN IT TO YOU BUT THIS IS LONG ENOUGH AS IT IS SO ILL REDIRECT YOU TO THEORY POSTS (TWO (2) FROM MY GALAXY BRAIN MOOTS) THAT I LIKED:

The 3 P’s Assessment: Parties, Political Interest Groups, and PAC’s
1.
Republican:
a. The Party asserts that the Fifth Amendment’s protection of human life applies to an unborn fetus as well, and therefore declares any means of abortion unconstitutional, as supported by the Fourteenth Amendment. They oppose any and all public funding and promoting of organizations like Planned Parenthood for as long as they provide abortion services instead of healthcare. They “support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.”
b. I disagree on the basis of a fetus, prior to the twenty-four week mark, not being considered a living human. Before this point in a pregnancy, the fetus would be unable to survive as is regardless. Because of this, no amendment is protecting the cells living within the woman in question. Additionally, this could be considered one’s own person and property, and thus cannot be interfered with by the state.
Democrat
a. The Party believes that safe and legal abortion are a part of quality reproductive healthcare services which every woman should have access to. They defend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in extending affordable preventative healthcare to women and prohibit discrimination among healthcare based on gender, and stand against Republican efforts to defund planned parenthood.
b. I agree with this stance in that it is a simple part of overall healthcare. Women cannot be provided with only limited healthcare for as long as men are provided with it in full. I also agree with their claim that this support contributes to creating a society where children are safe and can thrive by not forcing women to have children who they cannot provide for by any means.
Libertarian
a. The Libertarian Party’s stance on abortion is by far the most simple. They state that government should not be involved in the matter of abortions whatsoever, and the decision can be made by individuals by their own good faith. They also highly value the rights granted by the Fourth Amendment regarding privacy of personal property.
b. I do agree that neither federal nor state government should be able to interfere with a woman's right to choose what is best for her, but this policy leaves a grey area involving funding of programs such as Planned Parenthood that do offer abortions, but also reproductive health services such as testing and supplying various forms of birth control.
Green
a. The Green Party strongly believes in the importance of equal rights for women in every aspect of life, which non-negotiably includes those over their own bodies. Safe and legal abortion must remain available as well as a Plan B pill affordably and without a prescription, and they want to stress a government supported movement to educate women in these areas so that they can know their choices and act responsibly. They support contraception and abortion being included in average health insurance policies, and oppose the “government's habit of cutting family planning funds when those funds go to agencies in foreign countries that give out contraceptive devices, offer advice on abortion, and perform abortions.”
b. I absolutely agree with the choice to teach family planning nationwide and other countries which have enforced this method have repeatedly proven it’s success in lowering unwanted pregnancies. The addition to insurance policies would move some of the financial burden away from both the individual and the state, and the idea of localizing government funding I can support as well.
Peace and Freedom
a. Similarly to the Green Party, they would like “convenient provision of safe, free birth control information and materials to men and women of any age” in addition to free abortion services whenever needed. To ensure these rights to women as well as many others, they support adding a specific equal rights amendment to our Constitution.
b. Again, I support the both the educational programs and the easy access to abortion. However, they did not explicitly state their stance on government funding of other forms of reproductive healthcare.
c. I can support aspects of almost all of the parties ideas on addressing reproductive rights, but I, personally, identify the most with the approach of the Green Party. The surprising factor in this is that the past political spectrum tests I have taken have generally told me I reside somewhere around a center-left social libertarian, so one may have expected that I would fall with the Libertarian Party. Either way though, I can’t say I would necessarily vote for the Green Party Presidential candidate since it is a third party and logically I know they will not be elected. Maybe with extenuating circumstances I would, but otherwise I may vote Democrat as a more realistic option.
2.
a. Planned Parenthood Action Fund
b. Engages in educational and electoral activity, including legislative advocacy, voter education, and grassroots organizing to promote the Planned Parenthood mission. Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. (PPFA) is the nation's leading provider and advocate of high-quality, affordable health care for women, men, and young people, as well as the nation's largest provider of sex education.
c. The website informs readers of issues which their funding supports. Among these topics, they: 1. Stress the importance of protecting the rights ensured by Roe v. Wade. 2. Inform people on exactly how Obamacare created better birth control provisions. 3. Break down the negative impact of a Federal Abortion Ban. 4. Educate women on what rights are guaranteed to them through legislation. 5. Asses an appropriate budget concerning reproductive health.
d. The Action supports the Democratic candidate Mark DeSaulnier for the U.S. House District 11.
e. Located at 1110 Vermont Avenue, Northwest, Washington, DC 20005, so meetings aren’t really reachable.
f. Door to door speaking and donation requests are among possible volunteer opportunities.
g. One interesting fact is how many current issues rely on the funding of the 1970 Title X, which provides affordable birth control and reproductive health care to people with low incomes, who couldn’t otherwise afford health care services on their own.
3.
a. NARAL Pro-Choice California
b. They provide resources and information for voters who want to support pro-choice legislation and elect pro-choice legislators as well as organize and mobilize to protect that freedom by fighting for access to abortion care, birth control, paid parental leave and protections from pregnancy discrimination.
c. This branch of the NARAL believes 1. Reproductive rights are essential to achieving gender equality. 2. Organizing members can help pressure lawmakers and corporations. 3. Every woman should have access to birth control regardless of what state she lives in. 4. Paid leave is a critical component of reproductive freedom because of the financial stability it can provide. 5. Employer should respect when women choose to have children, not discriminate against them.
d. They endorse Katie Hill for Congress (District 25).
e. This group is located at 335 South Van Ness Avenue, San Fransisco, CA 94103. They host messaging trainings to teach people how to talk about NARAL and reproductive freedom to others.
f. One volunteer opportunity they provide is working their booth at the San Francisco Pride Parade.
g. This group has a PAC board which focuses on privacy.
4.
NARAL Pro-Choice California seems well organized and successfully run, but Planned Parenthood is by far the most well known group involved in this civic action, which brings it more support and more hate. They target mainly but not exclusively young women who are most impacted by the issues they stand for.
5.
a. Population Connection Action Fund PAC PCAF PAC
b. They believe that real investment in family planning will improve maternal and child survival, ease pressure on the environment, and increase social stability in the developing world.
c. Total receipt: $121,489     Total spent: $106,859     On hand: $73,257
d. Of the budget, $51,500 has been spent on Democrats in the House, and $22,000 on Democrats in the Senate, with none going to Republicans.
e. Donors included many physicians, college health department and hospital employees, and various other people. This reflects positively on the interests of the PAC because it shows that their actions are beneficial to those involved in medical industries who deal with healthcare.

RFA + Minor Trio reacting to their daughter picking out wedding dresses and she finds the perfect one.
RFA + Minor Trio reacting to their daughter picking out the perfect wedding dress
~~~
★ Yoosung ★
Yoosung was so happy that his daughter asked him to accompany her to pick out their wedding dress.
With you being away and her friends busy, the daughter thought this would be a perfect time for bonding with her dad, and not only that, she thought dress shopping with him would be fun.
She wasn’t expecting to find the one, but it just so happened that after the tenth dress or so, she found the dress that fit her perfectly, looked elegant on her, and she felt comfortable in.
Yoosung was in tears.
He was so happy.
His little girl just looked so beautiful and happy. The dress really was perfect.
“Y-y-you look so b-b-beautiful, I’m s-so happy I was able t-t-to w-witness you finding the p-p-perfect dress.”
“Aw, dad.”
Yoosung wants to pay for the dress. This is on him. He’s not financially stable at the moment but he has already paid a lot towards the wedding. He can buy the dress-
“24 thousand fucking dollars?”
Nevermind, they do split sys.
Tumblr media
♪ Zen ♪
He gets really bored shopping to be honest, so normally when you or his daughter asks him to come dress shopping he declines and says he has work,
But his daughters wedding dress?
Oh, he’s coming for that.
You and him watch your daughter come back and forth with different dresses on.
All of them are gorgeous but none of which she felt was the one.
That was of course until your daughter came out in a stunning dress that’s poofy at the bottom and lacy at the top.
Zen is flabbergasted at how beautiful his daughter looks. He’s speechless.
You are beside him crying, your daughter is shedding a few tears and he just can’t believe his daughter is getting married. And he can’t believe he was able to witness her finding the perfect dress!
He smiles and pulls his daughter into a hug, careful not to tear the dress.
“You look absolutely beautiful. I’m so happy you found the one”
Tumblr media
❀ Jaehee ❀
Every dress her daughter sported, Jaehee loved and thought could be the one. But she remembered back to her wedding with you and just how stressed she got trying to find the perfect dress, so she sympathized with her daughter who was freaking out unable to find a dress.
“Don’t worry, honey. You’ll find one. This process takes time, so calm down.”
Jaehee was getting really bored though.
She was really starting to believe that her daughter finding her perfect dress was hopeless.
Every dress she tried on she hated.
But then finally, after what seemed like hours, her daughter came out from behind the curtains in tears as she declared this dress was the one.
Jaehee smiled, pulling her daughter in her embrace, and turned back to face the mirror, her hands on her daughters shoulders. “You look stunning. I’ve never seen such a beautiful bride… well, after your mother. Speaking of your mother, let’s take a picture and send it to her.”
At the wedding, Jaehee couldn’t help but chuckle when she saw her daughter had made some adjustments to the dress, like splashing some colour onto it.
Tumblr media
☂ Jumin ☂
Jumin was unable to go with his daughter to pick out her wedding dress, but you went with her.
Originally, Jumin really wasn’t that bothered. He knew his daughter would look perfect in any dress she wore, and as much as he remembered how his wedding was a big deal, he didn’t really think a wedding dress that would only be worn once a year should be made into such a big deal.
But while he was in a meeting he received a text from you and a picture of his daughter in the perfect dress, the one, and he just bursted into tears.
Everyone in the meeting was s h o o k.
“M-mr. Han? Are you alright?”
“Assistant Kang. Bring me the projector this instance. Everyone needs to look at this.”
Everyone agreed that his daughter looked gorgeous.
Jumin rushed home and gushed to his daughter about how proud he was of her and just how beautiful he thought she was. He really regretted not going with you and her in the end.
Tumblr media
☺ Seven/Saeyoung ☺
“No, dad, I’m not wearing a dress made of honey buddha chip bags.”
Seven loves shopping. Especially for dresses.
To his disappointment they are not for him, but getting a dress for his daughter’s wedding is pretty nice too.
He took her to all the dress shops he knew,
And he helped her to find the perfect dress.
When she finally did find the dress that fit her just right, made her feel like a princess, Seven was ecstatic, and shed a few tears.
He was a very proud father at that moment.
Tumblr media
❆ V ❆
When his daughter asked him to accompany her dress shopping, V just smiled, putting down his camera and taking her hand.
He went to every shop she wanted to go to. Every dress she tried on, V smiled and gave compliments to it as well as critiques.
He wished that you could share this experience with his daughter too but alas you had work.
He made sure to take many posed and candid photos of her trying on dresses to show to you.
The girl found the perfect dress after a couple hours of searching. It showed off all her curves, went down to her feet,
And a perfect dress for a wedding that will be in Sweden. Lolz.
“You look wonderful, darling. Is this the one?”
She nodded her head slowly as a few tears slipped down her face. He wiped them away and pulled her into a hug. “Thank you for coming with me, dad.”
V smiled into his daughters hair and patted her back, careful of the dress. “Of course, my lovely daughter.”
Tumblr media
☻ Saeran/Unknown ☻
The ice cream he was eating fell out of his mouth as he gaped at his daughter standing in front of him, asking him to join her in finding her wedding dress.
“You want me to go with you? What about your friends? Or your mother?.”
“Mom is away and my friends are busy at work. Besides, I want you to join me. You have good taste,” she says with a wink which causes Saeran to huff.
He acts like he really doesn’t want to, but his daughter, and he, knows that he really wants to and is happy he was asked to go with her.
It didn’t take long for his daughter to find the perfect dress,
And when she did, Saeran swore he was looking at an angel.
She resembled so much of you in her dress. She had your hair, your eyes, and your beautiful smile.
Saeran was speechless as he watched his daughter twirl in her dress, a few happy tears falling down her face.
He was a little shocked when he reached his hand up to his face to feel his cheeks damped.
He glares when he hears his daughter chuckling at his tears, but it doesn’t stop him from crying. His daughter is so beautiful. And he is so proud of her.
“Sweetie, you… you look wonderful. You are gorgeous. This dress… you… are perfect. I’m so proud to call you my daughter.”
Takes many pictures.
You call him crying because you weren’t able to go. Saeran comforts you that night by showing you all the pictures and kissing you. He also encourages you to give your daughter the veil you wore at yours and Saeran’s wedding.
Tumblr media
✌ Vanderwood ✌
Refuses to cry. Refuses to cry.
“Dad? Are you crying?”
He really dislikes who his daughter is marrying. Can’t stand the guy/girl. But you are happy, and that is all that matters to him.
And he has really good fashion taste. So he’s the best person to have when shopping for dresses.
Vanderwood can be really critical of the dresses, not of his daughter, but of the dresses.
He doesn’t think they’re pretty enough, does think the quality is good.
He just wants his daughter to feel comfortable and happy in her wedding dress, so he wants to make sure she really does find the perfect one,
And when she does he sheds a single tear.
He is really proud of his daughter, and cannot believe that you and him created such a wonderful woman.
“You look… beautiful.”
That is all he can say because it’s true. He has no criticisms, no nothing. He thinks she is gorgeous and agrees she has found the perfect dress.
If You Had Known Me
This post continues a study of John 14 that began with my post One Way which covered verses 1-6. In this post, I will continue the study from verse 7.
If you had known Me,
“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.” - John 14:7 NKJV
I don’t see it as much now, but for a while, it seemed like everywhere I turned I saw WWJD? bracelets. WWJD? stands for “What Would Jesus Do?” This is a great question that causes us to stop and reflect on our situation and then choose to behave in a manner that is in accordance with the way Jesus lived His life while here on earth. I do not have anything against this question. However, texts like the ones found in John 14 remind me that there is much to who Jesus was that remains beyond my grasp.
The picture of the disciples in each of the Gospels is that of dull, slow-learning humans. We, of course, must be careful not to judge them too quickly because if we had been walking in their sandals, we might have been even slower in perception. - Borchert, G. L. (2002). John 12–21 (Vol. 25B, p. 113). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
I tend to look down on the disciples for taking so long to realize that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God, but of course, it is a lot easier for me. I have easy access to the entire Bible, not only that, I have also been taught by women and men of faith who have explained these truths to me. Imagine how challenging it must have been for the disciples to believe that this Man they followed, who looked like them, was indeed the Son of God? Not only that, I have met several people who claim to believe in God and study the Bible who still struggle with the idea of Jesus being God.
Imagine Jesus standing in front of you. Imagine you are one of the disciples. You have seen Jesus sweat, you have seen Him sleep, eat, etc. Maybe you have witnessed Jesus bleed, have callouses, messy hair. If there was no deodorant and shampoo back then I imagine Jesus smelled like the rest of the men and women of that time after a long hot day. Imagine now looking at Him and believing that you are seeing the Father. Imagine spending weeks and months and years with Jesus and believing that you know God!
I believe that the text is a rebuke to the disciples, who should have realized that “really knowing” Jesus would mean “really knowing” God. (Borchert, G. L. (2002). John 12–21 (Vol. 25B, p. 111). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.) It is also worth noting that the plural “you” is used in v. 7, so Jesus’ statement is not merely addressed to Thomas (v5). It is addressed as a general statement to all the disciples and thus to the Christian community. (ibid)
Show us the Father!
Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” - John 14:8 NKJV
Sometimes I imagine Jesus doing a facepalm. As I read through John 14 it seems like Philip wasn’t even listening to what Jesus just said. But as I thought about this more carefully I could the point made by G. L. Borchert, that “Philip’s words here are easy to understand because they represent the general human longing to gain a firsthand personal and practical confirmation of theological ideas and assertions.” (ibid) He also adds that “the idea of Jesus being one with the Father is rationally a hard idea for humans to accept.” (Ibid) Scholars continue to debate and argue and try to “find” a historical Jesus that is not divine.
Scholars seem to be continually seeking to discover a historical human Jesus between the lines of the Gospel texts. See the English versions of D. F. Strauss, The Life of Jesus Critically Examined (Philadelphia: Fortress, 1972); W. Wrede, The Messianic Secret (Philadelphia: Fortress, 1971); A. Schweitzer, The Quest for the Historical Jesus (New York: Macmillan, 1954); followed by J. M. Robinson, A New Quest of the Historical Jesus (London: SCM, 1959); and then the so-called third wave in J. D. Crossan, The Historical Jesus (San Francisco: Harper, 1991); R. Funk, R. W. Hoover and the Jesus Seminar, The Five Gospels: The Search for the Authentic Words of Jesus (New York: Macmillan, 1993); and R. Funk and the Jesus Seminar, The Acts of Jesus: The Search for the Authentic Deeds of Jesus (San Francisco: Harper, 1998). For responses see J. Green and M. Turner, eds., Jesus of Nazareth: Lord and Christ (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1994); B. Witherington III, The Jesus Quest: The Third Search for the Jew of Nazareth (Downers Grove: IVP, 1995); M. Wilkins and J. Moreland, Jesus Under Fire (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1995); M. Borg and N. T. Wright, The Meaning of Jesus: Two Visions (San Francisco: Harper, 1999); and J. Charlesworth, “The Historical Jesus and Exegetical Theology,” PSB 22 (2001): 45–63. With respect to the Fourth Gospel see the discussion in Haenchen, John, 2.125, who represents one form of the quest when he states: “The Jesus of the Gospel of John thus already speaks as the risen Christ, and thus already with the clarity that only the spirit of truth can give to the disciples.” Moreover, he continues that the Jesus of this Gospel says “what the ‘historical Jesus’ cannot yet say.” The clear split between the Jesus of history and the Christ of the confessing church is evident in Haenchen. - Borchert, G. L. (2002). John 12–21 (Vol. 25B). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
 We might not be willing to admit it but we have a lot in common with Thomas and Philip, we long to have a confirmation of the reality of God. I believe there is compelling evidence for the existence of God, but don’t we all wish we could see Him?
Yet you have not known Me?
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves. - John 14:9 NKJV
One of the many challenges with looking at Jesus and seeing the Father is that we have a hard time wrapping our minds around this theological truth. It is difficult to explain and even more so to imagine. We have to use very careful language and end up with theological statements like:
Schnackenburg categorizes this dual “in-ness” of Jesus and the Father as a “reciprocal formula of immanence.” This close interdependent assertion is an affirmation of a close unity between the Father and the Son without assuming that the unity implies absolute identity (cf. 10:38).  - Borchert, G. L. (2002). John 12–21 (Vol. 25B, p. 114). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
I don’t think the disciples were very interested in philosophical and metaphysical theories of divine presence. I believe that many of you reading this are not too interested either. So we sit here believing the words of Jesus without being able to fully explain or to fully grasp the truth they convey. But, just because we can’t fully grasp it, it does not mean that we are not able to grasp it at all.
What I take away from this is that we should not try too hard to differentiate between Jesus and the Father in terms of character and love. The actions and teachings of Jesus reflect the character and values of the Father to the point that seeing and interacting with Jesus should give us the clearest understanding we could possibly have of who God is and what His heart is like. This understanding of God keeps me from seeing the God of the Old Testament as being any different from the God of the New Testament. The love and grace that Jesus presents us are a revelation of the love and grace of the Father.
The Power of Believing
 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. - John 14:12-14 NKJV
John records several of these “double amen” (“truly, truly” or “verily, verily”) sayings of Jesus. This means that what Jesus is about to say is a very important statement. I should not have to tell you that there are many interpretations of what Jesus meant by this statement. For example, what does Jesus mean by “greater” works? What could be more dramatic than raising the dead (John 11:43-44), changing water to wine (John 2:7-11), walking on the Sea of Galilee (6:19), the multiplying of the loaves and the fish (John 6:9-14) or any of the amazing miracles Jesus performed?
The book of Acts helps us better understand what Jesus meant. Jesus continues to work miracles, except now He does so through the church, through His followers.
And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed.” Then he arose immediately. - Acts 9:34 NKJV
This interpretation fits with the idea that by greater perhaps Jesus meant greater in quantity rather than quality. Christ’s activity had extended over a relatively small area of the world, and also for a short period. After the ascension, the gospel would spread to all parts of the world. (Nichol, F. D. (Ed.). (1980). The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary (Vol. 5, p. 1036). Review and Herald Publishing Association.)
Jesus’ earthly ministry was limited in time and space. He served the Father for three and one-half years and never outside the boundaries of Palestine. The disciples, on the other hand, as Acts clearly attests, carried out ministry that was greater geographically, in terms of numbers of people reached and long-lasting effect.
We find a leadership principle here as well. All parents should be able to say to their children; all pastors should be able to say to their staffs; all leaders should be able to say to their followers: “You have the potential to do greater things than I have done.” To empower and develop followers whose ministry exceeds the impact of their mentors is to follow the model of Jesus.  - Gangel, K. O. (2000). John (Vol. 4, pp. 266–267). Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
“If you ask Me for anything in My name, I will do it.” - John 14:14 Berean Study Bible (multiple translations available here) is also interesting because the Greek construction makes this a conditional sentence. What is most intriguing is that the most likely reading of the Greek text here would have the prayer addressed not to the Father but to Jesus. It is also worth noting that the meaning of the expression here of asking me in my name, as H. Bietenhard has suggested, probably means praying both “according to his will” and “with the invocation of his name.” (Borchert, G. L. (2002). John 12–21 (Vol. 25B, p. 117). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.)
The fact that John can here speak of praying both to Jesus (14:14) and to the Father in Jesus’ name (cf. 15:16 and 16:23) would not likely trouble this Gospel writer because he would clearly see an intertwining of the two ideas in his thinking about God (cf. 1:1 and 20:28). The problem for Western Christians is that we usually define things by mean of distinction whereas the Semitic mind defines things by description or in picture-thinking. The overlap of Jesus and God in the statements of John may trouble us, but John was apparently not troubled. Therefore the Semite had no trouble in his Trinitarian formulation of speaking of God as the one who is, was, and is to come, the Spirit as the seven spirits, and Jesus as the firstborn from the dead (Rev 1:4–5)—and in that order. But we have come to speak of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and in that order. - Borchert, G. L. (2002). John 12–21 (Vol. 25B, pp. 117–118). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
 But the invitation to pray for “anything” (14:14) in this context is not, in fact, to be understood as “anything” in the absolute sense because the guiding principle of the believer’s prayer must be the same principle that Jesus followed throughout his life. That principle was the glorification of the Father in and through everything done by the Son (14:13). To read this promise of Jesus concerning asking in any other way would be a complete misunderstanding of the promise. (ibid)
I love how this principle is described in the book the Desire of Ages.
He explained that the secret of their success would be in asking for strength and grace in His name. He would be present before the Father to make request for them. The prayer of the humble suppliant He presents as His own desire in that soul’s behalf. Every sincere prayer is heard in heaven. It may not be fluently expressed; but if the heart is in it, it will ascend to the sanctuary where Jesus ministers, and He will present it to the Father without one awkward, stammering word, beautiful and fragrant with the incense of His own perfection. - White, E. G. (1898). The Desire of Ages (Vol. 3, p. 667). Pacific Press Publishing Association.
“And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.” - 1 John 3:22 NKJV
“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” - 1 John 5:14 NKJV
Obviously, just saying “in Jesus’ name” creates no magic potion for prayer. The culture in which these words were spoken took names very seriously, so much so that they equated one’s name with the character, spirit, and power of that person. That is why the Jews never spoke the name of Yahweh. (Gangel, K. O. (2000). John (Vol. 4, p. 267). Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers.) So it is important for us to continue to familiarize ourselves with what the Bible teaches regarding prayer. One thing is for sure, that there is power in praying in the name of Jesus, but that is also accompanied by reverence and deep desire and willingness to live our lives in accordance with His will.
As the will of man co-operates with the will of God, it becomes omnipotent. Whatever is to be done at His command may be accomplished in His strength. All His biddings are enablings. – Christ’s Object Lessons p333
God’s Love Language
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. - John 14:15-18 NKJV
If you were to look up John 14:15 in various English translations (here) you will notice that it is sometimes translated as an imperative, “keep my commandments” or as an indicative “you will keep my commandments.” This should not cause any concern since both options make theological sense. Those who love Jesus demonstrate their love by keeping His commands or words (John 14:21, 23-24; 8:31; 12:50). Obeying the commands of Jesus or abiding in His words all mean essentially the same thing. In a practical sense obeying His commands means copying the example that Jesus left us. Jesus never broke any of God’s commandments, because to do so would be to sin (1 John 3:4), and Jesus never sinned (1 Peter 2:22).
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. - 1 John 5:2-3 NKJV
Jesus knew that in order to live as He lived we would need help, and so He asks the Father to send us another Helper. Living like Jesus cannot be done by sheer willpower and discipline, it takes supernatural help, it takes a miracle. Jesus does not abandon us to figure this out on our own. The Holy Spirit is available, we just need to ask.
"Just so long as the church is satisfied with small things will it fail of receiving the great things of God. Why do we not hunger and thirst after the gift of the Spirit, since this is the means by which we are to receive power? Talk of it, pray for it, preach concerning it. The Lord is more willing to give the Holy Spirit to us than parents are to give good gifts to their children."  -- Reveiw and Herald May 19, 1904 Par. 11
What we need most is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We should not be lowering God’s standard or making excuses for our failings and cherished sins, we should be asking God for the Holy Spirit to come upon us with power and cause us to be more like Him. It is impossible, without God’s help it is impossible for us to live like Jesus lived. But when we love Him, that is our desire, to follow His example in every way, and this should cause us to seek the Holy Spirit daily, and to love like never before. This will transform every aspect of our lives. This is God’s plan for us.
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” - Luke 11:13 NKJV
answer All the questions for your newest oc
DEAD U HAD TO ASK FOR NEWEST DIDN’T YOU. welp in that case have ya boi eneko
What’s the maximum amount of time your character can sit still with nothing to do?he’s a patient dude! eneko can likely sit still doing nothing for as long as his physiology will allow aka until he needs to go to the bathroom or smth. he does well w low activity as he’s an introspective person
How easy is it for your character to laugh?FAIrly easy?? on a level of one to ten w one being laughs at anything that moves or doesn’t move i’d say he’s a.. 6. ok so not that easily like he IS fairly taciturn but he will smile and laugh at a good joke esp if he’s comfy around the person making it
How do they put themselves to bed at night (reading, singing, thinking?)by crying- no jk he doesn’t… cry… emotions? what are those??? (thats a lie he’s an emotional mess) he will plan for the next day, strategizing and such but that’s honestly rlly bad for him. he stresses easily. on nights when he’s got a clearer head he’ll hum softly or read if he’s not feeling too guilty abt burning off candles. he does like night walks they always clear his mind
How easy is it to earn their trust?oh oof that’s a tricky one. not that easy but at the same time- OKAy yeah just not that easily from one being the easiest to ten being the hardest he’s likely a 8
How easy is it to earn their mistrust?VERY hard. once you’ve gained his trust he will be LOYAL af to u eneko is quiet n not the most expressive but he will absolutely go down in flames for someone he’s deemed trustworthy. a solid 9.
Do they consider laws flexible, or immovable?laws are flexible defo. he PREFERS structure but if morality trumps laws he will break them. it also helps that he’s lowkey part of a rebellion so technically his existence in the present is breaking the law
What triggers nostalgia for them, most often? Do they enjoy that feeling?god save us all. he’s a nostalgic dude so uh, oh damn i dont have backstory for him yet i made him last night rainy stop bullying me but ykw we’re doing this. flowers defo. queen anne’s lace n bluebells esp? bring back memories n also pumpkin stew. mixed memories w that one. queen anne’s lace mean sanctuary n bluebells mean gratitude which is LOWKEY ironic considering they spawn memories of burning along w memories of his older sisters so yes?? he does like remembering his sisters but no not in that context. the stew is a weird reminder of his first love n that’s. also complicated
What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child?talk more and talk better. he’s got a bit of habit of being short abt things and the middle sister of the fam was ALWAYS getting on his case abt no u can’t word it like that but the eldest was and is a terrible influence n absolutely encouraged it bc she found it hilarious. it’s good they love each other i swear
Do they swear? Do they remember their first swear word?yes he’s part of a rebellion and a soldier what more do u eXPECt and no he doesn’t remember his first swear word. he also doesn’t curse that much dont get me wrong. he has to be comfy around u
What lie do they most frequently remember telling? Does it haunt them?gosh uh. eneko is still v underdeveloped so i .. WELL I CANNOt tell u in the present it’s prbly smth angsty involving his sisters or his lovER but the answer to does it haunt him? yes absolutely he must Suffer :)
How do they cope with confusion (seek clarification, pretend they understand, etc)?it depends on the situation’s levity. if it’s smth important he will absolutely bluntly ask for clarification if it’s smth casual he’ll just nod and pretend like he knows what ur talkin abt bc social anxiety is a b
How do they deal with an itch found in a place they can’t quite reach?Suffer in Silence
What color do they think they look best in? Do they actually look best in that color?he doesn’t rlly think abt this. he likes green tho but he wears a lot of black (that’s partially required by his associations and partially bc idk what other colors exist thanks @ god) he looks best in hmmm red
What animal do they fear most?himSELF
How do they speak? Is what they say usually thought of on the spot, or do they rehearse it in their mind first?he’s usually fairly forthright so he sounds like he’s saying whatever comes to mind but the reality is he says abt 1% of what he’s thinking and he won’t say things that are quite obviously rude. who knows tbh maybe he gains secret enjoyment from watching ppl squirm under his bluntness eyes emoji
What makes their stomach turn?torture n he hates the sight of bones. blood he can stand but bones? no thanks. unfort in the business they’re in he comes across both of those more than he’d like. he also hates working in the theoretical. it’s unnerving but he’s fine if someone he trusts is wading thru the abstract for him aka thank u @ kent for being the resident intuitive
Are they easily embarrassed?nah not particularly
What embarrasses them?if u slap his BUTT in public jkjk i mean that would embarrass him if u caught him by surprise but hmmm he doesn’t like attention if u draw attention to him he’ll freak a lil that would fluster him also excessive praise esp if it’s expressed publicly. he squirms beneath the spotlight
What is their favorite number?19. day of the month he last saw his sisters smiling
If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so?he’d prbly say smth deep which i cannot truly replicate but prbly smth like. “familial love is steady. it’s the mountain beneath which u were born. it’s the protection n the stability n the impossible sheer volume of it that can’t quite be comprehended. platonic love is like cords linking u to them. it’s the promise, the assurance of i will pull u up if u fall and if i can’t ill fall w u. it’s a tug o war and an anchor. romantic love is a stallion. it’s the passion and the chance but if u know how to tame it it serves to make u a better man than u could ever become on ur own. it’s the teamwork and the flames”
Why do they get up in the morning? to execute justice and to experience each new precious day he’s been gifted
How does jealousy manifest itself in them (they become possessive, they become aloof, etc)? it’s ugly when jealousy rears its head in him. he doesn’t SAY anything but his actions become more erratic and he has a harder time focusing. it’s likely he’ll become more impulsive. he’s not DANGEROUs per se but it’s not a situation u want him in
How does envy manifest itself in them (they take what they want, they become resentful, etc)? envy he’s better about. mostly bc unlike w jealousy he doesn’t already have the thing. it’s smth he’ll just push down and soldier thru like he does w most uncomfy things in his life
Is sex something that they’re comfortable speaking about? To whom? oh MY GOD DONT TALK ABT SEX that’s SCANDALOUS- the answer is no he finds it unprofessional in his line of work but he would be comfortable discussing it w his s/o
What are their thoughts on marriage? good. he approves. however, for himself he finds the prospect unlikely considering the high risk nature of what he’s involved himself w. he expects to die before 35 in all seriousness
What is their preferred mode of transportation? in the sweet embrace of death horseback
What causes them to feel dread? the knowledge that everything’s falling apart. that fate and circumstance are slowly but surely chipping away at the very foundation of what u live for and there’s absolutely nothing u can do to stop it. also freaking the appearance of the antagonist or his minions
Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth? in theory? no. in practice? he’s actually p sensitive that’s a difficult one to answer. it would greatly depend on the circumstance but in the long run he prefers the truth
Do they usually live up to their own ideals? yes but in his own eyes, no. he holds himself to extremely high standards and is very self critical. also he has rlly unachievable ideals he’s a lil bit idealistic beneath the guise of realism
Who do they most regret meeting? ohohOHO jk i have no idea not there yet in the story but prbly the antagonist he’s a b
Who are they the most glad to have met? funnily enough? he could almost say the antagonist. he’s the reason why eneko’s working as hard as he is for what he is. without the introduction of the antagonist he would’ve been oblivious to the terrible injustice around him and likely ended up a victim by some obscure mindless death order. however the person he truly admires is the rebel member who took him under her wing however she’s still in the works so i can’t give u much on her
Do they have a go-to story in conversation? Or a joke? i don’t think so, no
Could they be considered lazy? NOPE not in any sense of the word. eneko works extremely hard. he’s v dedicated n dutiful
How hard is it for them to shake a sense of guilt? oh, very hard. he’s naturally altruistic so he tends to take failures to heart and internalize them and considering the dangerous line of work he’s in he oftens has guilt building up inside him. he’ll likely carry it w him for the rest of his life once he’s decided to be guilty abt smth. if someone doesn’t help him w it it can break him down in ugly ways
How do they treat the things their friends come to them excited about? Are they supportive? yes!! he’s a pure son. you’ll definitely get a smile out of him if smth good has happened to u. he’s very supportive of his friends. he would die for his friends and likely all of u i just want u all to know this
Do they actively seek romance, or do they wait for it to fall into their lap?neither. he finds seeking romance irresponsible w his lifestyle. as i previously stated he expects to die young
Do they have a system for remembering names, long lists of numbers, things that need to go in a certain order (like anagrams, putting things to melodies, etc)? he has fairly good memory esp w faces! but otherwise? i would say he learns best by touch. he’s a tactile person and also fairly auditory. music defo helps him remember things
What memory do they revisit the most often? prbly the day he separated from his sisters. it’s not a particularly good memory but it’s seared in his mind
How easy is it for them to ignore flaws in other people? he doesn’t ignore ppl’s flaws per se? he’s p perceptive so it’s difficult for him to just turn a blind eye at least within his own mind but eneko is v tolerant of ppl and accepting. even if he dislikes u it’s doubtful you’ll know he’s fairly good at keeping up the same respect for most everyone he comes in contact w. but yeah? he knows what flaws are there but he will simply accept ppl bc he knows everyone, including himself, esp himself, has many flaws
How sensitive are they to their own flaws?oh oof yeah he’s?? a p sensitive guy so while he recognizes his own faults jabs to his weak spots will hurt him and he’ll prbly sit on the accusation or callout for days esp if someone accuses him of being selfish or immoral or not having done enough for the ppl he cares abt (smth along those lines) he’d absolutely hate that. but if u tell him he’s blunt he’s going to be like im well aware of that
How do they feel about children? he’s SUCH A DAD he loves kids and he’s rlly good w them they love him bc he’s SOFT ok but he doesn’t plan on having them himself even tho he’d like to for the exact same reasons he isn’t pursuing romance/marriage
How badly do they want to reach their end goal? enough that he’d die to reach it
If someone asked them to explain their sexuality, how would they do so?eneko is either demi or grasexual w pan preferences. he’s also panromantic. if someone asked for explanation he’d be like “i’m attracted to people of all genders” and just leave it at that unless ofc they were like RLLY curious or smth but he doesn’t rlly consider himself demi or pan or anything he just knows he isn’t straight LOL
QUESTIONS FOR CREATORS
A) Why are you excited about this character?…strong silent type. that’s all i have to sayB) What inspired you to create them?i’ve taken some inspiration from other characters from shows, etc. i’ve written so he’s a bit of a love child of the best of my musesC) Did you have trouble figuring out where they fit in their own story?im still figuring it out so that’s a probable yesD) Have they always had the same physical appearance, or have you had to edit how they look?he’s been edited a bit there were a few reincarnations of him like at first he had straight black hair in an undercut style but now it’s WAVY and dark brown and he also got darker. id say he’s like latino w a lil african blood this is esp amusing considering i literally created him last nightE) Are they someone you would get along with? Would they get along with you?i think we’d get along alright if we could get past the initial awkwardness bc we’re both kind of crap at interpersonal relationships actually he isn’t that bad it’s mostly me and i THINK he might find me slightly abrasive n energetic (even tho im PLOT TWIST low energy compared to most extroverts) but he’s tolerant it wouldn’t be too badF) What do you feel when you think of your OC (pride, excitement, frustration, etc)?love…. i love my soft boi i usually hate my ocs aka i would slap them if given the chance but eneko? deserves happinessG) What trait of theirs bothers you the most?he is not real in general and non existent in actual writing as of the present. the latter tragedy i will soon solve. in all seriousness it’s prbly his bluntness it has the tendency to give me second hand embarrassmentH) What trait do you admire most?his tolerance and patience i have none loLI) Do you prefer to keep them in their canon universe?for now, yes! i dont have a solid grasp of him so until then he’ll stay where he was BIRTHEDJ) Did you have to manipulate or exclude canon factors to allow them to create their character?not rlly! the entire story he’s in is still in the works so everything’s rlly flexible
hot take
if you’re gonna write a story that takes place in china
maybe actually do the research abt china???
fair warning: if you like really like cinder and/or marissa meyer you may just wanna sit this one out
in these trying times of lost innocence of childhood and being more aware of social justice issues, i find myself being very critical of the entertainment media i consume
esp when it comes to representation, bc representation is important to me. and it’s becoming more and more important to me the older i get, as an asexual chinese-american woman. i’m still on the fence abt no rep v. bad rep, but this isn’t what this post is mainly abt
i’m currently reading cinder, by marissa meyer for my book club
and i just...i have a lot to say abt it. a lot that i really gotta get off my chest before i feel i can continue to read it
i’d preferably like to talk abt it with my friends (and maybe i will when the time comes), but i’d have to wait until june 1 and finish the book. as i said above, i really have to get this off my chest before i can finish it, so here i am, screaming into the void
so to begin, and i usually comment abt this when it comes to A LOT of east asian rep i see in entertainment media: my beef with the combination of east asian culture to mean one (1) asian/east asian culture
in this case, a combo of east asian cultureS (plural) into one (1), which would be china
honorifics
there are honorifics in china--like you definitely want to apply the correct honorific to your authority figures (i.e., parents, teachers, doctors, bosses, etc.)
and that part of china’s culture was taken, and then adapted into japanese culture today, HOWEVER, the way it’s used in japanese culture today is very different than how chinese ppl use them
okay so disclaimer real quick, chinese is my second language, and i have not taken up learning japanese, and am i’m going off information i’ve learned from my friends who took japanese as their second langauge; so the information i provide here may not be precisely accruate (hence, having trouble finding better words to explain this)
a lot of china’s honorifics aren’t as “““specific”””--for major lack of a better word--as japan’s
they have mr., miss, mrs., teacher/master, doctor, etc., and, in general, it’s custom to use them bc they are important--authority and hierarchy is v important to collectivistic cultures
japan has “““specific””” identifiers that are often, if not always, used to identify any of those older, younger, or equal to you
senpai, -chan, -san, -sama, etc., as well as other identifiers as placeholders for the person’s name to communicate who they are in relation to the person speaking (e.g., oniisan, oniichan, oniisama)
how honorifics are used in cinder is almost completely wrong, not just in culture, but also through translation
from meyer’s website:
-dàren: for a high-ranking official today is simply means adult, or grown up. it can be used as a respectful honorific toward superiors, but it mostly just means adult. archaically it did mean “your/his excellency.” but again, today, it’s mainly used to refer to an adult. and i imagine however far into the future this book takes places, they’d use it the same way??? but i mean i guess if they went back to imperialism
-shìfu: for an older male this is actually master (as an honorific, such as teacher is, or to specify a very qualified worker). sometimes it can be used to address strangers, specifically older men (not necessarily specifically, or often, used for an older male)
-jūn: for a younger male idk where she got “younger male” from bc it’s mostly used as a measure word. it can be used as an honorific, but translates to “your” not younger male. had she been going by the “honorifics” she uses below, it should be dì, which comes from dìdi (弟弟), which means younger brother (but not necessarily younger male)
-jiĕ: for an older female my best guess is this is derived from jiĕjie (姐姐), which means older sister (not necessarily older female)
-mèi: for a younger female once again, she probably derived this from mèimei (妹妹), which means younger sister (not necessarily younger female)
these specific pinyin (more specifically the last two/three) that she picked cannot be separated from the other pinyin that help to identify them. jiĕ and mèi don’t exist by themselves in the chinese language (compared to -chan, or -san do in japanese), and therefore do not translate as such in meyer’s book. not to mention, multiple characters can be applied to jiĕ and mèi depending on the context and other pinyin/character next to it that helps form the word, or helps distinguish the context
she perhaps simplified these honorifics a little too much. so much so in fact that they lost their meaning. quite literally
and, as i said before, these honorifics aren’t used like they are in japanese culture/language. you don’t tack on honorifics behind someone’s name (like a suffix) as they do in japan. the whole honorific (not just half of it, not like a suffix) comes after someone’s name, such as Lín lăoshī (林老师), which means Teacher Lin. or replaces their name entirely, such as tā shì wŏ de dìdi (他是我的弟弟), which means “this is my younger brother” (as opposed to, “this is bob, my younger brother” or variations of that same sentiment)
names
now, in this futuristic world, i can understand if there are names from other countries (esp. other east asian countries)
however, if your crown prince’s name of china has a japanese name...i’m probs gonna call you out on it. esp bc china and japan don’t have The Best history. now maybe they’ve worked thru it after all these yrs, but still
he’s the crown prince of china
he’s mostly just refered to as prince kai. which i would be okay with if it was just that bc kai is chinese
however, his full name? kaito. kaito is japanese
rikan? japanese. like wtf, if your the emperor of china, you should probs have a chinese name. i mean, you’d think hope?
iko? also japanese (i admit this is being a lil nit-picky, bc cinder or adri or whoever is free to name their android whatever-the-hell they want to, i’m just saying)
and i mean, i guess i can see names from other countries in the real world too, but you have to remember china has the largest population of ppl in the world, so the chances that there are ppl within a certain district who don’t have chinese names is v slim (esp bc you have to take the hsk to show you can contribute to society in china before they grant you a visa to live/work there).
compare that to cinder’s district, where we have cinder, adri, iko, peony, pearl, sacha, fateema, and dr. earland. oh and then the lab tech named li, who’s most definitely the only one i can assuredly say is chinese (and i would hope looks chinese)
now, again, bc it is the future, maybe more (like A LOT more) ppl have moved to china lbr tho, they’ve moved back to imperialism, why would you choose to live there? but i’d still be bitter abt it regardless, bc like china, in theory, should have chinese ppl? w/ chinese names??? i imagine it’s still a p big country in this future
optics
i really wish cinder looked chinese. this is more of a personal thing, and i get that genes aren’t so cut and dry, and if she’s a lunar, then yeah she probably won’t look completely chinese
but a girl can dream for representation other than just mulan ya know (not saying mulan sucks or anything, but it’s like, kinda the only thing i have so)
esp bc the book takes place in china. and she is said to be at least mixed “““““asian”””””
i also wish the fucking prince looked chinese--his skin is fair according to the wikia
bruh
why are you so afraid to make your main characters brown
on a more serious note, and this is getting really nit-picky (kinda) again, but i really wish meyer had put more thought into dr. earland’s character. okay, now, i haven’t finished the book so the good doctor may, in fact,,, be...a...good....................doctor..............?
Tumblr media
but my point still stands in that dr. earland comes of as very sexist (with undertones of racism, wheeeeee) bc he hates fateen (who has dark skin, btw) bc she’s taller than him
and he’s also super creepy (as in, “where i’m from, that’s called pedophilia” kind of creepy) bc of his strange interest in young, teenage (cyborg) girls...
yeah
and okay, again, i haven’t finished the book, so maybe he’s supposed to come off that way
but an old, white dude showing too much interest in finding a young woc? not v good optics, regardless of dr. earland’s character yeah?
the fact the fateen points this out does absolutely nothing (aka lampshading).
if you point it out, but continue to fall into a harmful stereotype, you are still perpetuating the stereotype. full stop
misc
i say “misc” but most of this really falls under criticism of the author herself, misc is just shorter
i think it’s great that she’s taking this age-old fairy-tale and putting it into my place of birth, bc representation means the absolute world to me. also i really like this idea that the first telling of cinderella took place in china like fuck yeah, steal that white disney princess from the europeans
but i really wish you’d do it right
in her faq, she apologizes if she got anything wrong, but that’s like putting a band-aid over a bullet wound
how much research is research? did she just google a bunch of stuff, or did she sit down and actually talk to ppl from china? or chinese-americans who have kept their chinese culture?  participate in chinese culture to gain a better understanding?
going by the fact that she wrote cinder in a month, she probably stuck to google
which...i mean i guess i’m glad she made the effort, but it woulda been nice if she’d, after getting a book deal, consulted chinese ppl and edited what needed to be edited yeah? i know she did a little editing, but she said the whole process took 3 months from the time she found an agent to getting a book deal, so like...i’m willing to bet she didn’t sit down with some chinese folk and talk abt their culture (and so on)
and look, it’s really not that hard. and, sure it may delay when the book gets published, but at least it’d be more accurate. and better representation.
rather than falling into what most ppl do these days (i’m looking at you miraculous ladybug) and combining all the east asian cultures to make one (1) culture, and call it--not even east asian--but asian
as if that one (1) monster culture that’s mostly made of up east asian cultures could speak for the variety and diversity of a total of 48 countries, and their respective cultures, that are within the asian continent
now, this whole “calling it asian culture” isn’t meyer’s fault--it’s a side-effect of our society. like i get that, and i’m not trying to put the blame solely on her shoulders
but she still perpetuates it by choosing not to talk to chinese ppl abt a folk tale the may have originated in china, in order to ya know, make it more accurate to china. considering it takes place...IN CHINA
“So this is what Salting is like,” Tristan says, as if his vision isn’t tripled and he can feel his legs. The bridge seems impossibly long, so much longer than what he thought, and he dimly feels himself turn, puppeted by the need to keep moving, because if he stops he has a feeling that he’s never going to move again.
He feels something sigh in the back of his mind, and while he pushes himself ever further, feels the black creep in at the edge of his vision and his arm twitch at just the wrong moment, he spares a thought for what feels like something   else in his mind. He doesn’t get long, though, because there’s a sword coming down on his arm, and then there is no arm.
Pain like ice lances through his body, and he falls to the ground in a scream, convulsing. It’s the most terrified he’s ever been, and he wishes, for a brief moment, that someone will kill him quickly.
He has never been so lucky.
The despots who are left kick him to the edge of the broken bridge and then further, and he plummets to the dark water below. Just before he breaks the surface, he dreams he can hear someone screaming “No!”, and then all that’s left is ice.
He does not know how long passes. For a long time, all he knows is cold and sand and multiplicity - memories he does not know, cannot name, run behind his eyelids. He screams sometimes, when he wakes, but his throat grows raw and bloody and he cannot scream anymore.
Eventually, he tires and sleeps once more.
The world becomes warmth and light, at some point, but there are too many jagged edges in his mind, too many people speaking too many things he does and does not understand, so he does his best to try and ignore it all.
Tristan opens his eyes to a wooden roof. He blinks for a moment, two. Thinks: I should be dead; and then: Thank the Ages I’m not.
“Easy now,” comes a voice from his left, and he instinctively turns to face it, regretting the decision as it jostles the stump of his arm-
Oh. That. He winces sharply, and the voice chuckles.
Tristan recognizes the blue of the Sorelle before anything else - Kalden, his name was. He fights to get his tongue to cooperate, but when he tries to speak, there’s a jumble of vowels and not much else.
“Do you remember Salting?” Tristan nods, not trusting his voice. He remembers the bridge, and the burning cold, and -
He’s struck by violent tremors, then, and Kalden rests a hand on his arm to steady him. “Easy now, Valencio.”
It takes him a long moment to order his thoughts, longer still to try and steady his tongue enough to speak them. “H-h-how l-l-”
“How long have you been asleep?” Kalden finishes, and Tristan nods. When Kalden sighs instead of responding, Tristan’s heart clenched in his chest. Surely it can't have been that long…?
“A month, give or take. We found you a few weeks after the battle, under the river, surrounded in ice. Seems you saved yourself from death, even Salted.” Kalden sighs, and Tristan gets the distinct feeling that it's not the end of the story.
“You've woken several times, but this is the first you've been lucid enough to try and speak.” Kalden pats his complete arm. “We've had to call Vasco in every other time. He seemed to be the only one who could calm you down.”
The name throws him for a moment, until he remembers the dark-haired flute of a man who'd Salted himself for Cicero after -
Well.
After that .
Still, it makes him wonder - why would this Vasco, this man who'd saved Cicero when all Tristan had done was follow orders , spend his time helping him?
Kalden lets him think in silence. The man's presence serves to soothe, even with as little Tristan knows of him. At least he knows he's trustworthy.
“C-c-c-”
“Cicero?” Kalden supplies again, and Tristan nods once more. He has a feeling this will quickly get infuriating. There's already a headache buzzing behind his eyes, a swarm of thought like hornets in his brain.
“He shouldn't be busy today. Surprised he hasn't checked in on you more, to be honest.”
Tristan isn't surprised at all, but that doesn't mean it doesn't sting. At least Cicero is alive. He nods to Kalden, who stands and ambles to the door, poking his head out for a moment.
Tristan takes a moment to take stock of himself: his toes are responsive, confirmed by the wiggle at the end of the sheets. He clenches his left fist once, twice. He can feel his right fist move with it, even when he looks down and sees nothing past the elbow. Ice swims behind his eyes, and he does his best to breathe through it.
He must be lost in his reverie longer than he thinks, because he’s being jolted out of it what feels like seconds later by a soft touch and a gentle, “Tristan?”
“Good morning, hero, ” Tristan says, and at the confusion on Cicero’s face, he realizes he must not have spoken Ombrian.
“I think you said hello, right?” Tristan nods. “Hello to you, too, then. Still having trouble with the languages?” Another nod. “Well. You’re twice as smart as Vasco, so you shouldn’t have a problem-”
“I heard that!” comes a petulant yell from the doorway, and Vasco is there, seemingly from thin air. There’s a mischievous smile on his face, almost matched by the grin on Cicero’s. Airbrands, he thinks, exasperated.
“I think he’s just jealous that he doesn’t suddenly know an ancient language. ” Vasco’s voice flows smooth with the Dimenticate, and Tristan smiles despite himself. He finds his eyes drawn to him, all the languid grace of someone of the purple guild, and though Tristan has his own squabbles with that guild, it’s easy to put them aside. Especially since they stayed.
“Perhaps, ” Tristan responds, and the smile on Vasco’s face is blinding.
“- As I was saying,” Cicero continues, “you shouldn’t have trouble speaking again. You’re one of the strongest people I know, Tristan.” There’s something lurking under the surface of those words, a conversation that’s waiting to be had, and Tristan doesn’t know if he’ll ever be ready for it.
Still.
Cicero’s hand gives his remaining arm a firm grip at the elbow, and he smiles down at Tristan. He’s already exhausted, just by this minimal interaction, but he doesn’t want to rest. He wants to move around, get back up, back on his feet, be a part of what’s happening, but he knows if he tries there’s no doubt they’ll all just shove him back in a bed again.
“Good to see you back, old friend.”
“G-g-g-ood t-to s-s-s-”
He stops, impatiently patient, and Cicero waits like he’s got all the time in the world for Tristan to find his words. “Seeyoutoo,” he breathes out in a rush, and feels both humiliated and proud that he can speak. Cicero’s answering grin as he brushes past Vasco to leave only intensifies it -
Vasco. The man had slipped his mind for a moment, but now that he’s the only other living body in the room, it’s hard not to notice him. He walks over from the door, shutting it behind him, his walk making Tristan think of the cats that stalked the alleys of the Citte, hunting whatever poor rodent was unlucky enough to get in their way. He drops into the chair next to the bed in a single fluid motion, lounging like he’s been there for hours.
“So. Tristan Delzole.” There’s venom in his name, and he is remorseful enough to wince. “Back from the dead, in a fashion almost as miraculous as our d-dear Cicero’s.”
He feels like a viper staring down a mongoose. He’s not sure what he’s supposed to say, only feeling shock as he registers Vasco’s words. He lets the shock show on his face, hoping Vasco will answer his unspoken question.
“Not going to speak for you, Valencio. You’ll have to sp-speak for yourself.”
Damn. There goes that idea, then. “W-w-wha-t-t hap-p-p-pened t-t-t-t-”
Vasco waits for him to finish with an enigmatic smile, and it makes Tristan want to swat at the flower vase that’s sitting on the bedside table. Lucky that’s his missing arm’s side, then.
“T-t-t-o Cic-c-c-c-ero?” he finishes, and the little clap Vasco gives makes him scowl.
“Very good! And, as a reward, here’s your answer: he died.”
Tristan stops. Looks at Vasco. Waits for the sign that it’s all some terrible joke he’s being played by.
Vasco laughs sarcastically. “I wouldn’t joke about that, Delzole. I think the universe has given me the best possible punchline it could, T-t-t-t-t-ristan.” He plays up the stutter on his name, and now Tristan sees why Vasco is so hostile: Tristan is the reason he Salted in the first place. And now, Tristan is here, in the same place he was weeks ago, having Salted for the very same man. It’s a type of cruel irony, and one that Vasco is enjoying immensely, by the looks of it.
“G-g-g-g-lad yo-o-ou’re hav-v-v-v-ing-g-g f-fun.” His voice is more tired than he expects. He is more tired than he expects. He’s far, far too tired to parse exactly what all this means: that Cicero died but clearly didn’t stay dead, by the looks of it. That he, for all intents and purposes, should have followed the man into the dark.
“Only a little,” Vasco admits, and Tristan doesn’t believe it for a second. Instead, he turns on his side, the side that still possesses an arm, and pulls the sheets up around himself as if to sleep.
“Don’t be in-salt-ed, Valencio.” He groans at the pun, and then remembers he’s supposed to be sleeping. “I’ll have you speaking p-properly in no time. I did have a fine tutor, myself.” His tone gets distant, misty, but Tristan doesn’t bother turning to see if his expression matches. He hears Vasco stand, pushing the chair back from the bed, and walk to the door. There’s a pause then, as if he waits at the door, but Tristan shuffles more resolutely under the covers. He hears it click, swing, and click again, and Tristan is alone once more.
Almost as soon as he decides that sleeping might actually be a good option, he’s already dozing.
The short answer: No. Absolutely not. Precedence and evidence has shown us Trump is not, and will not, be a good president. People who say that he has the potential to be have their head so far in the sand, their intestinal tract is filled with dirt.
But let’s go into details. (Though Trump doesn’t have to jump through hoops to prove his qualifications, his dissenters have to pull out receipts just to be taken seriously.)
Let’s Look At The Man Himself
No, not physically look at him. Let’s look at his actions. (A lot of these will be touched upon later on.)
He is racist. As if wanting to build a wall on the US-Mexico border and put all Muslims in concentration camps wasn’t an obvious indicator of this point, there’s tons of other examples. He’s racist against black people, against Native Americans, against Latinx, against Jewish people, against Asians. Not only that, but racists feel empowered with Trump in office.
He is homophobic. He wants to repeal the Marriage Equality act and he has one of the worst anti-LGBTQ+ advocates as his vice president. He removed LGBT rights from the White House website.
He is ableist. Don’t we remember how he made fun of a disabled man? The fact he wants the Affordable Care Act dismantled – though his back-up plan is still not released – will result is so much suffering in death of the disabled.
He is misogynistic and violent toward women. He’s grabbed women without their consent, criticized women on their looks, and even said he’d date his own daughter. Ugh… (More on this point later, though.)
And he is a opportunistic liar. He says what people want to hear in the here and now. It doesn’t matter what he said two days ago, all that matters is he has your attention and your admiration in that moment. He. Is. A. Liar.
The Company He Keeps
Let’s look at some of the people he has appointed to positions of power.
Mike Pence – Vice-President. This guy is an utter shitstain. Anti-LGBT and pro-conversion therapy (aka torture.) Climate change skeptic. Used political donations in 1990 for his own personal finances. Once described himself as “Christian, conservative, republican – in that order.”
Steve Bannon – this guy is an advisor to Trump. On top of all that, he’s also a Nazi (though hides behind the term ‘alt-right’) with an anti-Semitic website.
Betsy DeVos – appointed to head the Department of Education. Sister to Erik Prince, a literal ex-mercenary and Trump campaign adviser. Donated billions to his campaign. Anti-LGBTQ+. Has no clue how she’d handle the position.
Jeff Sessions – appointed to Attorney General, who heads the DOJ. Known for racist remarks against black people. Deemed too racist to be a federal judge in 1986.
Mike Pompeo – selected as director of the CIA. This guy is Islamophobic, pro-government surveillance (hello 1984,) pro-torture and doesn’t like women having the right to choose.
Rex Tillerson – selected for secretary of state. A CEO of ExxonMobil who has ties to Russia. While being CEO of ExxonMobil, it shouldn’t be a surprise Exxon is at fault for multiple oil spills, yet a big advocate against climate change.
Scott Pruitt – Environmental Protection Agency nomination. Climate change skeptic and ally to fossil fuels.
Suffice it to say, Trump has picked ignorant, awful, or just plain bad people for these positions. Plus there’s a dash of nepotism in there. But, hey, what do you expect from a guy who was trying to get security clearance for his kids?
Cut Off From the World
Let’s not forget the fact he just axed all ambassadors the day he got inaugurated. Which could leave 80 foreign policy ties hanging in a state of limbo for months.
These Issues Don’t Make Him Or His Colleagues Money
Not even a full 24 hours after his nomination, certain issues were removed from the White House website. LGBT Rights, Civil Rights, Heath Care, and Climate Change. Now, plenty of people argue that a prior president’s pages are moved to archives so a new president can place their issues in their own words. Bullshit on Trump, though. His team has had months to write up something for those issues. It also doesn’t bode well, since the Department of Labor removed the “advancement of LGBT rights in the workplace” from their website, as well.
Yet, oh boy, we can sure check out Melania’s jewelry line. (Conflict of interest? Nepotism?)
Grab Them By The P*ssy
Remember the legal troubles Trump got into during his campaign? I’m not talking about Trump University, though the fraud does deserve note.
I’m talking about the sexual assault and rape allegations pitted against him. One of the cases alleges Trump raped a woman, when she was 13-years-old, in 1994. There’s various women taking him to court for sexual assault, right now.
His overall list of sexual assault and misogyny is much, much longer.
That’s not all for his foray into misogyny, though. Trump wants to cut funding for Violence Against Women programs.
According to the Department of Justice website, those grants funnel money to programs “designed to develop the nation’s capacity to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking by strengthening services to victims and holding offenders accountable.”
So, he’s going to make it harder for victims to get help and make it easier for offenders – who share so many qualities with him – to grab people by their privates (and worse) without consent.
The man is utterly disgusting.
One Person Does Not Equal One Vote
The CIA and FBI agree: Russia helped Trump get in the White House. Trump benefited from conservative gerrymandering of the lines, along with another troubling fact. This was the first election where the Equal Voting Rights Act wasn’t in full effect since it was enacted.
Regardless, we know Hillary won the popular vote by 2.8 million votes. That means 2.8 million more people wanted her, rather than Trump. The only other time when the electoral loser won the popular vote was in the Gore v. Bush election. Gore only won by 500,000 votes, though. 2.8 million is a huge anomaly and the fact Clinton “technically” lost is a travesty of democracy.
Censorship: A Fascist’s Best Friend
Trump is a huge proponent of curtailing criticism against him, also known as censorship! Which is common in fascism.
This is terrifying, just an FYI. Trump banned the National Parks Service from tweeting after it posted a picture comparing the size of Obama’s inauguration crowd compared to Trump’s crowd size. (Obama’s was bigger; it hurt Trump’s ego.)
The National Parks Service had to issue an apology when their “tweeting privilege” became reinstated.
Overall
He is in no way qualified to be President of the United States. He has multiple failed businesses. (I know you “but he’s a great businessman” apologists want to pull that out of your bungholes.) He’s a self-admitted sexual offender. He’s a puppet for Russia. He. Is. Not. Qualified.
Yeah, it’d be great if he turned out to be a great president, but we cannot ignore precedent and his sustained actions.
Past evidence has shown us he is misogynistic, hateful, bigoted, racist, xenophobic, a liar, an oppressor, ableist, a sexual assaulter, and lacks any decorum. And he aligns himself with people who are just as bad, if not worse.
Do not stick your head in the sand over any of this, because your wishful thinking and “ignorance is bliss” attitude will get marginalized groups killed.
If you’ve ever sat through a history class, listening to the horrors of genocides and slavery and lynchings; if you’ve ever thought “I’m not going to be on the wrong side of history,” now is the time to take a stand. Now is the time to be politically aware, to know what is going on in your government. Now, is the time to be critical.
Otherwise, you’re obstinately ignoring the terror that’s descending on marginalized groups and our nation, as a whole. You’re the people who enable oppressors to maim, hurt, and kill the oppressed with your determined ignorance. You’re quietly allowing the wrong side of history to remain in power.
If you remain silent and willfully oblivious, you are on the wrong side of history.
Russia Moves to Ban Jehovah’s Witnesses as ‘Extremist’
By Andrew Higgins, NY Times, April 4, 2017
VOROKHOBINO, Russia--A dedicated pacifist who has never even held a gun, Andrei Sivak discovered that his government considered him a dangerous extremist when he tried to change some money and the teller “suddenly looked up at me with a face full of fear.”
His name had popped up on the exchange bureau’s computer system, along with those of members of Al Qaeda, the Islamic State and other militant groups responsible for shocking acts of violence.
The only group the 43-year-old father of three has ever belonged to, however, is Jehovah’s Witnesses, a Christian denomination committed to the belief that the Bible must be taken literally, particularly its injunction “Thou shalt not kill.”
Yet, in a throwback to the days of the Soviet Union, when Jehovah’s Witnesses were hounded as spies and malcontents by the K.G.B., the denomination is at the center of an escalating campaign by the authorities to curtail religious groups that compete with the Russian Orthodox Church and that challenge President Vladimir V. Putin’s efforts to rally the country behind traditional and often militaristic patriotic values.
The Justice Ministry on Thursday put the headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia, an office complex near St. Petersburg, on a list of the bodies banned “in connection with the carrying out of extremist activities.”
Last month, the ministry asked the Supreme Court to outlaw the religious organization and stop its more than 170,000 Russian members from spreading “extremist” texts. The court is scheduled to hear--and is likely to rule on--the case on Wednesday.
Extremism, as defined by a law passed in 2002 but amended and expanded several times since, has become a catchall charge that can be deployed against just about anybody, as it has been against some of those involved in recent anti-corruption protests in Moscow and scores of other cities.
Several students who took part in demonstrations in the Siberian city of Tomsk are now being investigated by a special anti-extremism unit, while Leonid Volkov, the senior aide to the jailed protest leader Aleksei A. Navalny, said he himself was detained last week under the extremism law.
In the case of Jehovah’s Witnesses, the putative extremism seems to derive mostly from the group’s absolute opposition to violence, a stand that infuriated Soviet and now Russian authorities whose legitimacy rests in large part on the celebration of martial triumphs, most notably over Nazi Germany in World War II but also over rebels in Syria.
Jehovah’s Witnesses, members of a denomination founded in the United States in the 19th century and active in Russia for more than 100 years, refuse military service, do not vote and view God as the only true leader. They shun the patriotic festivals promoted with gusto by the Kremlin, like the annual celebration of victory in 1945 and recent events to celebrate the annexation of Crimea in March 2014.
Mr. Sivak, who says he lost his job as a physical education teacher because of his role as a Jehovah’s Witnesses elder, said he voted for Mr. Putin in 2000, three years before joining the denomination. He added that while he had not voted since, nor had he supported anti-Kremlin activities of the sort that usually attract the attention of Russia’s post-Soviet version of the K.G.B., the Federal Security Service, or F.S.B.
“I have absolutely no interest in politics,” he said during a recent Jehovah’s Witnesses Friday service in a wooden country house in Vorokhobino, a snow-covered village north of Moscow. Around 100 worshipers crammed into a long, chilly room under fluorescent lights to listen to readings from the Bible, sing and watch a video advising them to dress for worship as they would for a meeting with the president.
“From the Russian state’s perspective, Jehovah’s Witnesses are completely separate,” said Geraldine Fagan, the author of “Believing in Russia--Religious Policy After Communism.” She added, “They don’t get involved in politics, but this is itself seen as a suspicious political deviation.”
“The idea of independent and public religious activity that is completely outside the control of--and also indifferent to--the state sets all sorts of alarm bells ringing in the Orthodox Church and the security services,” she said.
That the worldwide headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses is in the United States and that its publications are mostly prepared there, Ms. Fagan added, “all adds up to a big conspiracy theory” for the increasingly assertive F.S.B.
For Mr. Sivak, it has added up to a long legal nightmare. His troubles began, he said, when undercover security officers posed as worshipers and secretly filmed a service where he was helping to officiate in 2010.
Accused of “inciting hatred and disparaging the human dignity of citizens,” he was put on trial for extremism along with a second elder, Vyacheslav Stepanov, 40. The prosecutor’s case, heard by a municipal court in Sergiyev Posad, a center of the Russian Orthodox Church, produced no evidence of extremism and focused instead on the insufficient patriotism of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
“Their disregard for the state,” a report prepared for the prosecution said, “erodes any sense of civic affiliation and promotes the destruction of national and state security.”
In a ruling last year, the court found the two men not guilty, and their ordeal seemed over--until Mr. Sivak tried to change money and was told that he had been placed on a list of “terrorists and extremists.”
He and Mr. Stepanov now face new charges of extremism and are to appear before a regional court this month. “There is a big wave of repression breaking,” Mr. Stepanov said.
In response to written questions, the Justice Ministry in Moscow said a yearlong review of documents at the Jehovah’s Witnesses “administrative center” near St. Petersburg had uncovered violations of a Russian law banning extremism. As a result, it added, the center should be “liquidated,” along with nearly 400 locally registered branches of the group and other structures.
For the denomination’s leaders in Russia, the sharp escalation in a long campaign of harassment, previously driven mostly by local officials, drew horrifying flashbacks to the Soviet era.
Vasily Kalin, the chairman of Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Russian arm, recalled that his whole family had been deported to Siberia when he was a child. “It is sad and reprehensible that my children and grandchildren should be facing a similar fate,” he said. “Never did I expect that we would again face the threat of religious persecution in modern Russia.”
In Russia, as in many countries, the door-to-door proselytizing of Jehovah’s Witnesses often causes irritation, and their theological idiosyncrasies disturb many mainstream Christians. The group has also been widely criticized for saying that the Bible prohibits blood transfusions. But it has never promoted violent or even peaceful political resistance.
“I cannot imagine that anyone really thinks they are a threat,” said Alexander Verkhovsky, director of the SOVA Center for Information and Analysis, which monitors extremism in Russia. “But they are seen as a good target. They are pacifists, so they cannot be radicalized, no matter what you do to them. They can be used to send a message.”
“A big reason they are being targeted is simply that they are an easy target,” Ms. Fagan said. “They don’t vote, so nobody is going to lose votes by attacking them.”
Attacking Jehovah’s Witnesses also sends a signal that even the mildest deviation from the norm, if proclaimed publicly and insistently, can be punished under the anti-extremism law, which was passed after Russia’s second war in Chechnya and the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States.
Billed as a move by Russia to join a worldwide struggle against terrorism, the law prohibited “incitement of racial, national or religious strife, and social hatred associated with violence or calls for violence.”
But the reference to violence was later deleted, opening the way for the authorities to classify as extremist any group claiming to offer a unique, true path to religious or political salvation.
Even the Russian Orthodox Church has sometimes fallen afoul of the law: The slogan “Orthodoxy or Death!”--a rallying cry embraced by some hard-line believers--has been banned as an illegal extremist text.
To help protect the Orthodox Church and other established religions, Parliament passed a law in 2015 to exempt the Bible and the Quran, as well as Jewish and Buddhist scripture, from charges of extremism based on their claims to offer the only true faith.
The main impetus for the current crackdown, however, appears to come from the security services, not the Orthodox Church. Roman Lunkin, director of the Institute of Religion and Law, a Moscow research group, described it as “part of a broad policy of suppressing all nongovernmental organizations” that has gained particular force because of the highly centralized structure of Jehovah’s Witnesses under a worldwide leadership based in the United States.
“They are controlled from outside Russia, and this is very suspicious for our secret services,” he said. “They don’t like having an organization that they do not and cannot control.”
Artyom Grigoryan, a former Jehovah’s Witness who used to work at the group’s Russian headquarters but who now follows the Orthodox Church, said the organization had “many positive elements,” like its ban on excessive drinking, smoking and other unhealthy habits.
All the same, he said it deserved to be treated with suspicion. “Look at it from the view of the state,” he said. “Here is an organization that is run from America, that gets financing from abroad, and whose members don’t serve in the army and don’t vote.”
Estranged from his parents, who are still members and view his departure as sinful, he said Jehovah’s Witnesses broke up families and “in the logic of the state, it presents a threat.”
He added, “I am not saying this is real or not, but it needs to be checked by objective experts.”
Mr. Sivak, now preparing for yet another trial, said that he had always tried to follow the law and that he respected the state, but could not put its interests above the commands of his faith.
“They say I am a terrorist,” he said, “but all I ever wanted to do was to get people to pay attention to the Bible.”
