I've seen people talk about how LOTR is so great partly because it takes its world and characters completely seriously.

And that got me wondering, because I absolutely agree, but I feel like I'm in the minority here. It seems like we've moved into a period where it is deeply uncool to take fantasy seriously in mainstream film.

So, do you think a film made today with strong fantasy elements would be successful if it was as serious and earnest at LOTR?

#like for example we had Thor and Thor the Dark World done 8 and 10 years after LOTR (about the same time as the Hobbit IIRC)#which took their fantasy elements seriously #then we had GOTG and Ragnarok which poked fun at them #then we had the unspeakablethorfilm which.... wel..... 🤦‍♀️#which I'd argue swung thw pendulum too far #but then i suppose we had the avatar film (whichni haven’t seen)#which i assume was done seriously #?#but then perhaps that's just consistent tone with the original dilm which was done much earlier #google says 2009 #i dunno #i'd like to hope the pendulum swings back that way soon personally #random thoughts #fantasy films #mcu #lotr #lord of the rings
