Created problems are piling up in the U.S. as the globalists continue their effort to weaken America and establish a world government by 2030 or sooner.

These are facts, not conspiracy theories.

Oil—The Biden administration deliberately reduced America’s oil production by stopping construction on the Keystone XL Pipeline, halting oil production on federal lands in Louisiana, New Mexico, etc., and this caused the price of oil to soar. Now, Biden wants production increased to bring the price of oil back down, but he doesn’t want U.S. companies and U.S. workers to increase production, get their jobs back, etc.; he wants OPEC and foreign workers to increase production and have those jobs.

Crime—The Defund the Police movement has resulted in police budgets being cut in many cities, thousands of criminals being released from jails, soaring shootings, killings, and thefts; this is by design because globalists want to gain control of the police.

Border—The Biden administration has deliberately destroyed what few immigration laws the U.S. had. This week, Biden’s Homeland Security Sec. visited the U.S./Mexico border and was secretly recorded saying the border crisis is unsustainable (just the opposite of what he is saying in public). About one million immigrants (many with Covid) have come across the border, drug and human trafficking have increased, etc., and there is no effort to stop it (just an effort to hide what they are doing by lying about it.).

Covid—Only U.S. citizens are required to wear masks and be tested. Illegal aliens are not required to be masked or tested, and many are deliberately bussed and flown to other parts of the U.S., especially TX and FLA (at taxpayer expense) in what appears to be an effort to spread Covid, turn TX and FLA from Red to Blue (from Republican to Democrat) and blame unvaccinated citizens for spreading Covid to justify forcing everyone to be vaccinated for the global good or the common good (deceptive phrases meaning world government).

Inflation—Inflation is rising faster than wages are increasing, meaning money is declining in value and buying less and less. There seems to be two reasons: 1) Unending stimulus packages with pork-barrel spending, and 2) Disruption of production due to the deliberate spread of Covid and imposed lockdowns. This is increasing the price of everything (food, clothing, vehicles, rent, mortgages, medicine, etc.; gas is $1 per gallon higher than it was this time last year). It is destroying the U.S. economy and hurting every American, especially the poor.

Critical Race Theory (CRT)—Socialists have increased their power in the Democrat Party, and they are pushing CRT (a new form of segregation) to divide the U.S. They know that a nation divided against itself cannot stand. Why else would they want to re-establish segregation? Note: On Aug. 16, 2021, the Arkansas Attorney Gen. said separating children based on race violates the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Afghanistan—Biden told America the Afghan military had enough modern weapons and troops to defend itself. Then, we read that Biden sent a letter to the Taliban asking them to hold off taking over the country until we could evacuate our people. Then, we read that most of the major Afghan cities fell in 24 hours. Then, we read that the Afghan capital fell a few hours later. Then, we read that Biden offered the Taliban foreign aid for a promise to not attack the U.S. embassy.

Biden’s hasty exit sends the message that America is not a reliable ally; it dooms thousands of Afghan soldiers to death that helped the U.S.; it dooms Afghan women to second class citizenship, covering their face, etc.; it dooms Afghan girls to forced marriages, no education, etc.; it dooms Afghan boys to brainwashing, very little education, etc.; it dooms Afghan men to beatings, amputation of limbs, etc.; and it dooms the Christians to convert to Islam or be executed. Thousands of Americans were injured or killed in Afghanistan, and Biden squandered everything America accomplished in a matter of hours.

Update One: On Aug. 16, 2021, it was reported that French Pres. Macron was advised to call an emergency meeting of the EU Council because “the security of the world” is in danger. Some EU leaders say an Islamic Caliphate in Afghanistan will be a serious threat to the western world.

Update Two: On Aug. 16, 2021, an editorial in a Chinese-affiliated newspaper declared that war will break out between China and Taiwan, and the U.S. will not help Taiwan. Amir Tsarfati said China, Russia, and Iran are declaring that the post-American world order is over, and he believes that Russia and Iran no longer believe the U.S. will help Israel if they decide to launch an attack.

Update Three: On Aug. 17, 2021, it was reported that China has been emboldened by America’s apparent weakness, and her military is already preparing to practice an attack on Taiwan.

Update Four: On Aug. 17, 2021, it was reported that the Taliban is already sending letters to house churches saying, “We know who you are, and we’re coming for you.” The Antichrist will use beheadings as a terror tactic, and the Taliban does that too.

Here are some of my afterthoughts on Biden’s Afghan debacle.

Biden had a choice. He didn’t have to run. He was advised against it, but he did it anyway.

Biden has led America to defeat in the War on Terror, and his claim to love women and children is nothing more than a campaign slogan that he used to get elected (tell the women and children of Afghanistan that Biden loves them).

The Taliban, Iran and others will declare that Allah has given Islam a major victory over the Great Satan and be encouraged to fight harder (and Biden has just given them weapons worth many millions of dollars). They are surely blaspheming God, His name, and His people.

The success of radical Islam will increase the pressure on Israel and the Arabs to sign a peace treaty.

Israel must realize that she needs to rely on God, not America.

Biden has created a breeding ground for Islamic terrorists, and a borderless world is more dangerous than ever. (The security of the U.S. is threatened by America’s open border, and the Taliban won’t hesitate to cross it.)

It is clearer than ever that the Christian’s hope is the Rapture, not a better, stronger America.

As the world grows darker, the cries for a world leader to solve the world’s problems will grow louder.

God brought Afghanistan (and Babylon) down in a matter of hours, and He can bring the U.S. down in the blink of an eye if He wants.

The U.S. is led by people that are following Satan or it wouldn’t be supporting a godless world government, godless world religion, abortion, gay marriage, censoring Christian ministries, etc.

Biden raised the gay flag over our embassies, and the Taliban will probably take it down and raise their flag over our embassy.

There are many reasons to believe the lukewarm church needs to wake up, or God will eventually bring our sin-filled nation to its knees.

Here are some more reasons to believe that the Rapture is close.

One, deceit and lying have existed at least since God created Adam and Eve, but it will be common practice at the end of the age.

What could be more deceitful than deliberately spreading Covid-19 and blaming it on the unvaccinated?

Could it be internment camps to deliberately incarcerate the falsely accused unvaccinated?

This writer has seen several reports lately that the CDC is planning to have incarceration camps in every U.S. city.

Several sources have reported that on Aug. 6, 2021, TN Gov. Mike Lee signed an executive order authorizing the National Guard to seize unvaccinated people for incarceration.

Natural News reported that it has information that the CDC has been working with the University of Chicago to develop a plan to call homes in an effort to determine if there are any children between 6 months and 17 years in the home that have not been vaccinated.

The activation of incarceration camps in every U.S. city and perhaps a phone call to every household is very troubling.

It has also been reported that starting this month in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, people will not be allowed into restaurants, theaters, and several other venues without proof of vaccination.

This writer is far from knowledgeable on Covid-19 and the mutations or variants, but this is some of what I have read and the way I understand it:

The Covid-19 virus doesn’t want to be killed by a vaccine, so it tries to stay alive by mutating.

Some medical professionals believe the mutations are developing in and being spread by vaccinated people.

This explains why the world will never reach herd immunity (vaccinate so many people on earth that the spread of Covid-19 is unlikely). For whatever it is worth, about 2/3 of the new Covid cases in Israel are people that have been fully vaccinated.

Here is a repeat from my last week’s article with the addition of one sentence: we are seeing the global development and advancement of technology and policies that many excellent Bible prophecy teachers believe will lead to the Mark of the Beast (forced compliance, loss of one’s job, development of passports or passes, a demand for government databases to track people, a demand to prevent the unvaccinated from entering stores to buy or sell, the spread of anti-Christian rhetoric, etc.). We are seeing a preview of things to come and a warning from our merciful God (that knows what is going to happen before it happens) to be sure we are saved.

Two, concerning earthquakes:

On Aug. 11, 2021, a 7.1 quake struck off the coast of Mindanao, Philippines.

On Aug. 12, 2021, an 8.1 quake struck near the South Sandwich Islands (South Atlantic Ocean).

On Aug. 14, 2021, a 7.2 quake struck Haiti. Three days later, it was reported that 6,900 were injured, 1419 were killed, and 84,585 homes were damaged or destroyed.

On Aug. 14, 2021, a 6.9 quake struck in the Gulf of Alaska.

On Aug. 16, 2021, as Haiti was trying to deal with the 7.2 quake, Tropical Storm Grace was bearing down with strong winds and perhaps as much as 8 inches of rain (up to 15 inches and flooding in some areas).

Three, concerning an increase in frequency and intensity of natural disasters (like birth pains): on Aug. 14, 2021, The Moscow Times reported that Russia’s Pres. Vladimir Putin said the scale of natural disasters (floods, droughts, and forest fires) that have hit Russia this year is “absolutely unprecedented.”

According to the article, “Russian weather officials and environmentalists have linked the increasing intensity of Siberia’s annual fires to climate change.”

On Aug. 15, it was reported that at least 51 people have been killed by floods and mudslides in Turkey.

On Aug. 16, the U.S. announced that the water level in Lake Mead is at the lowest level since the Hoover Dam was built in the 1930s, a water shortage on the Colorado River was declared, and it was announced that there will be water cut-backs in 2022. Farmers and ranchers will cut production.

Four, concerning the Battle of Gog and Magog: on Aug. 13, 2021, Monte Judah (Messianic World Update) said, “It is very clear that the IDF and the government of Israel is planning to attack Iran soon to stop the nuclear weapons program. This is evidenced by the fact that the IDF, the Air Force, has been running long-range bombing training missions with the nation of Greece, and they have been doing in-flight refueling and other things of that type with Benny Gantz, the Defense Minister, announcing and giving warnings to the U.S. and other nations that Israel is going to stop Iran if they continue to do it.”

Sixteen years ago, in the very early days of medical genetic testing, I received a positive result for one of the BRCA mutations, which are correlated with a vastly increased risk of breast and ovarian cancers. I began interviewing doctors and genetic counsellors, in order to decide whether to have preventive surgeries—and, if so, which ones. I quickly understood that the science of cancer prevention had a tunnel-vision problem: I was counselled to undergo surgeries that would lower my risk of cancer but vastly increase other health risks. I joked that cancer prevention would be the more successful the sooner I died of something else.

What made my predicament more difficult was that the medical advice I got wasn’t wrong. Preventive surgeries were the best options available for me to live a longer life. But the advice was dispensed without regard for, or at times even acknowledgment of, the damage that these surgeries would do to my health. I agonized over the risks, the uncertainties, and the irreversible nature of my decisions. In the end, I chose to have the surgeries, albeit not in the order and not nearly on the time frame that was recommended back then. I am now older than my mother or her aunt, who also had the mutation, ever lived to be. But I was profoundly changed by the surgeries. My life now is not fully continuous with my life before the interventions. I like some of the changes and regret the others. I also know that, if I had not been mindful of the unintended consequences of my decisions, my health and my quality of life today would be the worse for it.

In the United States, we are in a similarly terrible predicament now, as a society, as I was as a person with a body. The measures we are taking to save ourselves from a global pandemic of the novel coronavirus are changing us in fundamental, possibly irreparable ways. By instituting lockdowns and deploying a variety of emergency powers across the country, we are destroying our economy, our social fabric, and our political system. We will never be the same. Whether we change for both the better and the worse, as opposed to the solely catastrophic, will depend on how mindful we remain of the damage we are doing as we attempt to save ourselves from the pandemic.

The economy has already taken the biggest sudden hit in memory. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their jobs, and many more will become unemployed in the coming weeks. Inequalities in wealth, opportunity, and access to health care have become even more glaring than they were just a couple of weeks ago.

The social fabric is being torn in unprecedented ways, owing to school closings, a widespread shift to working from home, social distancing, sheltering in place. Whereas we used to share dozens of experiences a day with friends, acquaintances, and strangers—from riding the subway to working in an office, standing in line at lunch, going to a concert, eating at a restaurant, chatting to an Uber driver—many of us have been reduced to sharing only isolation and the fear of chance encounters, if either of those can be said to be shared.

Our political system, frayed as it was, is under extraordinary stress. The Supreme Court has delayed cases. The Justice Department is seeking extreme powers. The Trump Administration is using the crisis as an opportunity to push through a more extreme version of its agenda. The President now lies to the nation daily ,not only on Twitter but also on live television, during briefings that he has turned into versions of his rallies. The election campaign is in a state of suspended animation. The borders are effectively closed. At the federal level, there is a real possibility that the coronavirus will paralyze the work of Congress, leaving the White House without check. At the local level, quarantine measures either have stopped or will stop all town councils, school boards, and community meetings. Local news media, an endangered species before the crisis, may have been dealt a final, fatal blow by the coronavirus.

In the past week, several high-profile writers have raised the possibility that emergency measures taken against the pandemic are too drastic. We tend to throw the word “authoritarian” around a lot, usually to mean anything that we perceive as less than democratic. But one of the technical definitions of authoritarianism is a regime in which one person or a single group of people make all governmental decisions, denying the public participation in political life. (This distinguishes authoritarianism from totalitarianism, where people are forced to participate all the time.) When we virtuously retreat to our homes, deserting public space and delegating all authority to one man armed with emergency powers, we are creating a society as close to the textbook definition of authoritarianism as has ever actually existed.

So what do we do now that so much economic, social, and political damage has already been done? We have to start talking about the damage, and thinking about tomorrow. We have to recognize that what we are doing to avoid being killed by a virus is also killing us as a society. We have to make it a priority to restore the social fabric.

One tool that will be necessary for this project is an antibody test, which will tell people whether they’ve already had the coronavirus and recovered from it. (Antibody tests for the novel coronavirus exist, but the tests that are currently available—or, for most people, not available—are tests that check for the presence of the virus. A large enough number of people with immunity, mobilized intelligently, could not only help prevent new infections but also help remedy some of the inequalities that the crisis has exacerbated.

Such a mobilization should not be an entirely private undertaking, and, in order to be large enough it has to have at least some government involvement. Writing in the Times, the chief executive of New America (the foundation where I was a fellow last year), Anne-Marie Slaughter, argued that America’s recovery will be guaranteed by local, largely nongovernmental horizontal organizations. But that lets the government off the hook, relegating it to the level of competent management, such as that embodied by Cuomo, and relieving it of the duty to lead.

Slaughter also suggests that the crisis has catapulted us into the future. Direct cash payments to tax-paying Americans, which are included in the government’s relief package, will provide an unexpected nationwide test run of universal basic income; distance learning may pave the way to more accessible and more equitable higher education; the drastic rise in telecommuting could reduce pollution and free up real estate that could be converted from offices to housing. All of this may be true. But how and whether these changes play out months and years from now depends entirely on how we think about both them and ourselves.

For example, will we think of universal basic income as a new approach to distributing resources—one in which society values people for their humanity, and not for what they produce—or simply as a less bureaucratic alternative to welfare checks? Will we think of distance learning as a way to make education more accessible or as a way for colleges to save money on professors and classrooms? For younger kids, might the shift prompt us to stop thinking of school as a place to warehouse children while their parents go to work, and start thinking of ways to engage children in learning? Will we emerge more atomized than ever before, with all casual links severed, accidental connections precluded, and public spaces destroyed—insuring that the new authoritarianism continues—or will we take care to create our public space anew? Will we have the courage to resist trying to restore the world we have lost, with its frenetic pace, its air travel and traffic jams, and its obsession with growth and production?

Our track record is abysmal. We have responded to crises by exacerbating the fundamental problems of society, including the root causes of the crises themselves. Our response to 9/11 sacrificed civil liberties and human rights. Our response to the financial crisis of 2008 created even more wealth inequality. If our response to the coronavirus pandemic follows the same patterns, it will make previous crises look like child’s play in comparison. If we continue to create more authoritarian powers; if we continue to go on nationwide lockdowns, or even effectively stay in one for a year or a year and a half; if we continue to feel virtuous because we’ve stayed home and done nothing (and those of us who managed not to murder their children will feel even more virtuous)—if we do all these things, we will have prevented the worst outcome of the coronavirus, but we may still destroy ourselves in the process.

In the morning of Friday, March 13th, Mary Beth Appel and Johanna Berrigan, two health-care workers who run a free clinic in North Philadelphia, were preparing for the morning rush. Their clients are experiencing homelessness, and sleep in abandoned buildings, shelters, or on the street nearby. “We see the same things that an urgent-care clinic does,” Appel, a sixty-year-old nurse practitioner, told me. The most common ailments included colds, wounds, chronic illnesses, and some frostbite. Today, though, they were bracing for the arrival of covid-19. “I fully expect we’ll both get it. Don’t you?” Appel asked Berrigan, a sixty-four-year-old physician assistant. The women were seated on the first floor of the clinic, a converted row house, discussing how to contain infection among their clients. “The protocol now, if you feel sick, is go home and isolate,” Berrigan said. “Where are our people going to go? We’re going to isolate them under a tree in the park?”

The health-care clinic is one of two or three in the country that are part of the Catholic Worker Movement, a loose-knit social-justice organization started by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, in 1933. Appel and Berrigan had been running the clinic for almost twenty-nine years, and had treated patients through the aids crisis, the crack epidemic, and, more recently, widespread addiction to opioids. They were well-acquainted with the difficulties of meeting human needs during a crisis: Berrigan travelled to Iraq, in the nineties and early two-thousands, to document the impact of economic sanctions on its people, and helped provide care in Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated the island in 2010. Still, they had never seen anything like the  coronavirus. When I arrived, Appel had just spoken to a fellow Catholic Worker, in New York, to ask for advice on how to pray for the protection of their patients. “I was looking for the patron saint of spit,” she told me, only half joking. “There is one for bed bugs.”

At the time, in Philadelphia, there were still fewer than two dozen confirmed cases of covid-19, and it had yet to manifest among the homeless population. In the early days of the pandemic, the homeless were surprisingly insulated from the disease, because they weren’t travelling internationally. “It’s unlikely that our community has been abroad in the past few weeks,” Berrigan said. The virus seemed most likely to reach them through contact with middle-class people in public places, including with college students who volunteered at soup kitchens. “For this community, service providers and librarians are vectors,” Appel said. But, once the virus became more widespread, Appel and Berrigan knew that cases among the homeless would increase rapidly.

The women had received little guidance on how to care for homeless patients, and some of the advice seemed nonsensical. At a recent meeting with health professionals, they’d been told to take sick homeless people to the E.R. “for testing.” “It’s ridiculous,” Berrigan said. “We know they don’t have tests.” (Today, tests are available, but in limited circumstances.) In the absence of formal protocols, they had been improvising; they had bought a box of rubber gloves and some face masks, though they knew these would offer little protection. In addition to their practical questions, Appel and Berrigan were confronting ethical ones. The clinic was vital to the lives of its clients: people came for medical services, as well as to make phone calls, borrow books (the shelf included copies of “American Pastoral” and “Atlas Shrugged”), take showers, and use the bathroom. Shelters treat you like shit.” She also knew that, in the close quarters of shelters, there was additional risk of exposure to covid-19. The street felt safer.

Ferguson worried that she was at greater risk of contracting the virus because she slept in a public place, ate in communal settings, and wasn’t able to wash frequently. Still, she wasn’t sure how she could mitigate the dangers. “I’m not preparing for it,” she said. “What do I do?” She had heard that the most important precaution she could take would be to find a way to isolate herself, and Appel and Berrigan were encouraging her to do all she could to get off the street. “They’re my best friends,” she said. Over the years, she had occasionally managed to find a room for short periods, but she always left. In her purse, she had a crumpled paper with the name and number of a man who, she thought, might have a room that she could rent cheaply. She called several times, but couldn’t get through. Eventually, she gave up and went next door to the St. Francis Inn, a soup kitchen that is run by Catholic nuns and friars and has served meals three hundred and sixty-five days a year, without fail, since 1979. Usually, the friars served the food like a dine-in restaurant, as a sign of respect to their clients; that day, though, the meals were grab-and-go, and yellow caution tape blocked off the garden.

But most homeless people remained on the street, where they were at risk. “Housing is health care,” Charles King, the C.E.O. of Housing Works, told me. This is one of his mantras, and it is true even under ordinary conditions. “It’s impossible, under normal circumstances, to follow any kind of medication regimen or healthy diet, or to get proper sleep, if you don’t have a home,” he added. “And of course people need to have proper hygiene and be able to wash their hands.” The current outbreak only made the consequences more extreme. “Homeless people are ten times more susceptible to covid-19, by the fact they have nowhere to go and to clean themselves,” he said. King noted that the need to provide these people with housing wasn’t only about our moral imperative to help vulnerable people. Public-health scholars, such as Randall Kuhn, a professor at U.C.L.A.’s Fielding School of Public Health, have argued that once the virus reaches the homeless population, it could ravage that community; this, in turn, would increase infection in the general population. For everyone’s sake, it is important to protect the homeless. “In an era of pandemic, housing is inherent to prevention,” King said.

But the next day there was good news: the room that Ferguson had been hoping for was available to rent, for five hundred dollars a month. An anonymous donor, who had found her through the soup kitchen, had given her a check to pay for it. Appel and Berrigan were delighted. “It’s really hard to stay clean and sober on the street,” Appel told me. “And, especially during the pandemic, she has a place to self-isolate should she need to.”

That same morning, Appel and Berrigan, for the first time, saw patients whom they suspected had contracted covid-19; one young woman had a fever and a cough, and had been living in close quarters in a sober-living facility. With no way to help her isolate safely, the volunteers at the clinic sent her to the emergency room. They instituted more changes in the clinic’s protocol. “Now that we’re starting to see symptomatic people, we’re moving things outside,” Appel told me. The earliest signs of the nation's E. coli outbreak surfaced two weeks ago, when the health department in New Jersey discovered a cluster of sick people carrying a single strain of that bug. This wasn't just any E. coli; it was O157:H7, a dangerous strain that produces toxins that destroy the lining of blood vessels. As of Friday, 98 people have been infected in 22 states; almost half of them have been hospitalized, and 10 have developed kidney failure. The culprit: romaine lettuce.

But tracking down the contaminated lettuce has proved challenging. At first, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told consumers to avoid prechopped romaine lettuce. Then it expanded the warning to any romaine grown in Yuma, Arizona, after discovering that eight sick men in an Alaska prison ate lettuce that arrived in intact heads. (In the winter, Yuma grows most of the leafy greens eaten in the United States, so many that the town holds an annual Lettuce Festival.) Investigators traced those heads to a Yuma business called Harrison Farms, but they haven't been able reconstruct the path of the chopped lettuce that made people sick from Washington state to Louisiana to Connecticut.

Though the E. coli strain contaminated lettuce somewhere between farm field and salad bowl, the federal agencies can't yet say where. It's likely it will take them a while to find out-while more people fall ill and massive amounts of food get thrown away-because, in the United States, we do a terrible job of tracking the path our produce takes from farm to fork.

The technical term for a documented path is traceability. Other countries-for instance, Japan and the nations of the European Union-do this routinely. But in the United States, the procedures that might make our food supply more traceable have been caught in a tug of war between federal officials, who want to solve outbreaks more quickly, and growers and shippers, who are resistant to investing in technology they don't think they need. Stic Harris, director of the outbreak response unit at the Food and Drug Administration, hinted at the persistent disagreements Friday afternoon in a call with reporters.

-When I walk into a grocery store and I look at a bag of lettuce and it says 'Product of the USA,' do I know it's from Yuma? No. Do I know it's from California? No," he said. -That's solved by more descriptive labeling, but in the end it is the industry's call."

The battle over produce traceability isn't new. Policymakers began to get concerned about it after the 2001 anthrax-letter attacks showed how vulnerable the United States is to bioterrorism. Realizing that a biological-weapons attack easily could be executed via the food supply, the US Bioterrorism Act of 2002 made it mandatory for every business to keep -one up-one back" records, identifying the prior handler of a piece of fresh food and the place where it went next. If you went backward step by step through those records, the thinking went, you would be able to find a food's source without burdening any single business with too much record-keeping.

It was a good goal, but the execution fell short. In 2009, the inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services, parent agency of the FDA and the CDC, tried to verify how well US traceability was doing. It picked different 40 types of food to trace back but was able to find the origin for only five of them. The Food Safety and Modernization Act, signed in 2011, was supposed to improve things-but according to the federal call Friday, investigators are struggling. -Trying to find all those records, whether they be digital records or written records or handwritten records, is extremely tough," Harris said.

When there are records, they aren't necessarily granular enough to be useful. Amy Kircher, director of the Food Protection and Defense Institute at the University of Minnesota, gave me the example of a four-pack of tomatoes, the kind that come sealed with shrinkwrap into a plastic tray. -We assume those tomatoes come from the same source," she said. But because tomatoes from many farms get commingled at packing houses and then sorted for similarity of ripeness, size and color, that four-pack could contain tomatoes from four different farms. And if you could decipher the four-pack's barcode for the information it contains, you still wouldn't learn where each of those tomatoes came from. What you'd get, Kircher said, is a lot number that tells you the day and shift when the four-pack was put together-and then, tracking further back, the identity of all the farms that sent tomatoes to the packing house on that day.

That still doesn't tell you the source of the individual tomatoes you purchased-and leading food-safety lawyer Bill Marler says that you can only get even that far if producers were truthful about the path their produce took to the packing house. In fact, he said, there's a fair amount of informal commingling on the way.

-Say Farmer A has an extra half load of romaine and Farmer B needs it to fill an order, A drives down the road and gives it to Farmer B," he told me. -Or a distributor needs X amount of bags of chopped romaine to go to Panera, McDonald's, Walmart, whatever. They are not running Farmer Bob's lettuce through the chopper and then stopping and cleaning up and then doing Farmer Joe. They are running lettuce through until they have the size they need."

Ideally, what's needed is the equivalent of an RFID chip rubber-banded onto every head of lettuce or a barcode stuck on every tomato. But depending on labels to prove identity is tricky. They only work for foods that come through the supply chain whole, not for produce that gets peeled or sliced or chopped before sale. And think of how quickly you peel those sticky ovals off peppers and apples. It might take three days to learn the pepper made you sick-but the label that could launch a traceback might have gone down the garbage chute two days before.

It's possible that the answer-and, yes, these days it's held out as the answer to everything-might be blockchain. The distributed, encrypted ledger that supports cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin could also be used to build a record of every transaction that affects a piece of produce, from the person who picked it, to the truck that carried the pallet, to the table where it was dumped at the packing house and the wholesale shipment it joined on its way out the door.

The promise that blockchain poses for solving complex tracebacks led IBM, Walmart, and a handful of big food companies including Nestl\cE9 and Dole to invest two years ago in a pilot project. In one test, described at a shareholder meeting and then recounted in Fortune, a trackback of the paper and electronic records needed to prove the identity of a Walmart package of sliced mangoes took six days, 18 hours and 26 minutes. A parallel search on a batch of sliced mangoes logged through blockchain took two seconds.

Getting results that fast might help consumers figure out whether the food they already bought is safe to eat-and ultimately, save clean food from the garbage. But absent a massive industry commitment, blockchain for food tracing could fail at the same point where traceability fails now: at small farms that have more urgent priorities than hooking their harvest pallets to the Internet of Things.

-Right now, people are writing contracts with the equivalent of two brothers with 10 acres of mangoes in Mexico who haven't taken their farm electronic," Kircher says. -It raises the question of how far back you can go."

But the traceability improves, the outcome of outbreak investigations will be huge food waste. That only begins with the vast amounts of romaine being dumped right now; big national retailers such as Costco and Kroger are yanking lettuce and prepared salads from their produce sections, and one ready-to-eat salad maker has called back four tons of its products. Without more precise information about the source, this outbreak could damage sales of other lettuces also. In a parallel example, in 2006, the government identified bagged spinach from one packing house as a source of E. coli-but stores pulled all forms of spinach from their shelves, and it took a year for spinach sales to recover.

That kind of market damage-along with the likelihood of more illnesses-is what's haunting investigators as they try to piece together the records that will solve this outbreak. To improve food safety, we need a stronger chain of data. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
