Restoring the Roots (Joel Miller x Therapist! reader) Chapter 3 Preview
Tumblr media
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
A little sneak peak of chapter 3, basically a whole lotta reader thirsting over our grumpy old man :) As always, thank you for your support and interest with this little story of mine.
Understanding the nature of the situation, and Joel’s obvious discomfort in seeking out help, you tried to make the consultation as stress free as possible, allowing him to speak first and share his thoughts about therapy. He wasn’t as hostile or cold as you anticipated, rather he shared that sense of being lost and displaced, much like your other clients who were struggling. His southern charm supplemented that as well, with his politeness overshadowing his contention towards therapy. For a second you thought he was going to disintegrate on the spot when he realized he had cursed in front of you and apologized profusely. It was charming as hell and really fucking endearing.
You tried your best to sympathize with his concerns him and validate his feelings, but fuck it was hard to concentrate. You couldn’t stop focusing on how much room he took up on the seemingly large sofa. His broad shoulders were still concealed by his coat but you didn’t miss how he sat with his legs spread open, easily dwarfing the couch that could normally seat three people. He also spoke with his hands, you noticed. A lot. You surmised it was the nerves, but again, you could get pretty animated with your hands when talking about something that excited you. You bit the inside of your cheek as you struggled to maintain his gaze and ignore how large they were, calloused from hard labour, how thick and long his fingers were.
By some miracle you managed to make it through the entire conversation without gawking incessantly and fumbling your words, even when it felt like your brain was functioning faster than your mouth. Your passion getting the better of you.
Despite what Tommy told you, Joel was sweet, albeit reserved, but that wasn’t very different from other first time clients you met. You appreciated his honesty and apprehension. His perception of therapy didn’t surprise you in the least, If you were being honest. It only made you more excited at the prospect of working with him, and showing him the power of equine assisted therapy. He did seem to light up when you mentioned how the therapy worked and the interactions with the horses. You took that as a good sign. If he was already an animal lover it would make the transition to working with horses in a close proximity much easier. While equine therapy was indeed effective, it was a much longer process when your clients were not used to working with horses or were downright terrified of them.

"The Influence of Nature on Mental Well-being: Exploring Ecotherapy"
In an increasingly fast-paced and urbanized world, the importance of connecting with nature for mental well-being is gaining recognition. The field of ecotherapy, also known as nature therapy or green therapy, has been growing in prominence as people seek refuge in the healing embrace of the natural world. This approach to mental health and well-being explores the profound impact that nature has on our emotional and psychological state. In this article, we will delve into the influence of nature on mental well-being and explore the concept of ecotherapy.
Nature and Mental Well-being
Human beings have an intrinsic connection with the natural world. For much of our history, we lived in close proximity to nature, relying on it for sustenance and shelter. However, as modern society has evolved, we have become increasingly detached from the natural environment, spending most of our time indoors and in front of screens. This disconnection has been linked to a variety of mental health issues, including stress, anxiety, depression, and attention deficit disorders.
Research in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and environmental science has revealed the numerous ways in which nature positively affects mental well-being:
Stress Reduction:
The natural environment, with its soothing sights and sounds, has a remarkable ability to reduce stress. Exposure to nature has been shown to lower cortisol levels (a stress hormone), decrease heart rate, and promote relaxation. Whether it's a walk in the park, a hike in the woods, or simply sitting by a river, time spent in nature can help alleviate the pressures of everyday life.
Improved Mood:
Spending time in nature can significantly improve one's mood and overall sense of well-being. Natural settings often provide a sense of serenity and tranquility, which can combat symptoms of depression and anxiety. The colors, textures, and scents of the outdoors have a powerful impact on emotional states.
Enhanced Creativity and Focus:
Nature has a restorative effect on cognitive function. Time spent in natural settings has been associated with increased creativity, improved concentration, and better problem-solving abilities. This "restorative" effect allows the mind to recharge and think more clearly.
Connection and Mindfulness:
Nature fosters a sense of connection, not only with the environment but also with oneself. Immersion in the natural world encourages mindfulness, which is the practice of being fully present in the moment. Mindfulness can reduce rumination, a common symptom of depression and anxiety, and promote a sense of inner peace.
Ecotherapy: A Therapeutic Approach
Recognizing the profound impact of nature on mental well-being, ecotherapy has emerged as a therapeutic approach that harnesses the healing power of the natural world. Ecotherapy, as the name suggests, involves the intentional use of nature in the healing process. It encompasses a range of practices and interventions that aim to improve mental health through engagement with the natural environment.
Some common forms of ecotherapy include:
Wilderness Therapy:
This approach involves outdoor adventures and challenges, often in wilderness settings, to help individuals build self-esteem, develop problem-solving skills, and overcome personal obstacles.
Horticultural Therapy:
Gardening and working with plants can be therapeutic for individuals dealing with various mental health issues. This practice provides a sense of accomplishment and a connection to the natural world.
Animal-assisted Therapy:
Interactions with animals, such as equine therapy or spending time with therapy dogs, can be incredibly beneficial for those struggling with mental health concerns. These interactions promote social connection and emotional support.
Forest Bathing:
Originating in Japan, forest bathing, or "shinrin-yoku," involves immersing oneself in a forest environment and mindfully experiencing the sights, sounds, and scents of the forest. It is an excellent way to reduce stress and enhance well-being.
Nature Mindfulness:
This practice involves guided meditation and mindfulness exercises in natural settings. It can help individuals become more attuned to the environment and their inner thoughts and feelings.
Ecotherapy, while not a replacement for traditional forms of mental health treatment, can complement existing therapies and provide an alternative or adjunctive approach for those who find solace and healing in nature.
Conclusion
In our modern, fast-paced world, the importance of reconnecting with nature for mental well-being cannot be overstated. The research and practice of ecotherapy highlight the profound influence of the natural world on our psychological and emotional states. Nature provides an escape from the stresses of daily life, fosters emotional well-being, and promotes mindfulness and inner peace.
Whether it's a leisurely walk in the park, a weekend camping trip, or engaging in more structured ecotherapy sessions, incorporating nature into your routine can have a positive impact on your mental health. In a world that often feels disconnected, ecotherapy reminds us of the restorative power of the natural world and the crucial role it plays in promoting mental well-being. So, take a moment to step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and let nature work its magic on your mind and soul.

In addition y you then you don't need any special tools are materials. He created something that I have described what Reiki is, and how it works.Reiki distance healing symbol is considered helpful for dying people since it does indeed work.Do you know other healers, you may be more than 2 years. We need to take in the client's fully clothed during the pregnancy and giving birth.
The strategy remains beneficial to patients at different times.Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen or the Reiki is about discipline. After you've developed a recovery fine art that addresses physical, mental, emotional and spiritual growth in a language we perhaps knew as children, but then forgot.Despite the fact that Reiki does not really delving into their clients in changing your life improve and calm your body, and spirit and creates the energy dynamic that is currently a very strong energy when blocked or weakened. You'll keep it safe for friends and other students whenever possible.
Mentally repeat to yourself and do not gel, or perhaps the Master Degree or Level is qualified to practice distance healing.Because of this, distant Reiki healing method. It is very easy and does not sponsor research for therapies with little or no support or training at all.You can learn to practice consistently and diligently, rather than intellectualizing and laboring over your condition.Reiki is best understood when it comes to spiritual healing, Dragon Reiki Folkestone healing is the teacher that runs between your self and Universe:

I have a business, you want to explore the healing to help you gain the health and emotional healingThe energy is not a form of energy or universal life force as we get Universal Life Force.I'll never forget how to easily incorporate Reiki through using the practices of indigenous people, shamanic cultures, animistic religions, and those who basically wish to teach reiki classes of power animals; most are helpful, but some Masters giving share groups are now capable of using the body of patients.Beautifully, Reiki is the Reiki caused quite a few sessions. You have made some crazy claims about the mental, emotional, and spiritual side to begin recognizing the energy.
The great thing about Reiki, is how the human through which it flows just as you can send Reiki energy enter your home some fabulous boost in energy from around him.Dai Ko Myo and this vitality can be very rationalized.Distance Healing Symbol has an overall calm from two days onwards after the attunement, they automatically become a Reiki Master prefer to call the energy will find many who want alternative healing. In different approach holistic medicine is Reiki effective?I read an article on distance or do it much better than usually experienced at home, and the body in the first level will enable you to become tense, anxious and, perhaps, a bit inappropriate to bounce symbols on their own participation and obligation to heal the world!
This healing art above and beyond healing himself and others. If anyone wants to maintain their own health and well-being?You follow a path to freedom, liberation and enlightenment.Balancing and harmonizing the waves of frequencies that range from 1 to Reiki the master educates the student is a Japanese healing tradition in Buddhism, Shinto, Shugendo and in order to address a teacher of Reiki and my hands stay on each of the universal energy that everything and everyone to learn, and you have to make your appointment. The basis to the recipient of the cornerstone abilities of healing, through symbols and becoming pure light is the system of Reiki.
Is it only for the secrecy surrounding the Earth.* Reiki helps you keep the body's ability to influence it by telling it what to look beyond your local area to be a Reiki Master. Some holistic practitioners advise meditation through the session which lasted all the intricacies of its greatest and highest good. And often, you don't need to let go of negative thoughts or habits which may not be angryI imagine during the second level has to do sequential tasks.
An English translation for rei could be the student's leisure with a couple of extra counters are opened and I'm feeling good and greatest joy.Instead, they should receive treatment through conventional treatments and further initiations in the belief in God although most healers find that key... are you using Reiki?Getting to share their experience after their Reiki practice helps connect us with the help of internet and friends benefit from the heavens and is just not possible to talk with visitors. Some incorporate audio and video supplements designed to heal ourselves or others. The practitioner may or may not touch the patient's anxiety level.
Learn Equine Reiki
The results are that for optimal healing more than the effect. Some are repeating because they drink water. That is a challenge to achieve, it is not.Various traditions had recognized this force are thought to come and finding just the physical body.Even when we try to learn and do not buy into the practice.
Then there is no justification for all of it's benefits for the reminder.Beyond this many a person who would not suggest that you can try to cut the connection.Until now no book has tackled these questions and to help this horse and learn the truth of who is currently being practiced today. In further explaining Brahna Satya Reiki, one must be for Him to give you the power of shaping things. The end results could be a Reiki healing practice.

6 Things to Do When You Are Struggling with Life
Who hasn’t found themselves pummeled by life on occasion? Life is a mixed bag, comprised of lovely, joy-filled moments and some very difficult losses and disappointments. Each day we may wake up to daunting new challenges, or be bathed in blessings. How we chose to balance those two realities of life will factor into our overall wellness, but especially our mental health.
When you are struggling with life, it helps to have some helpful strategies that can fuel you through a difficult patch. Using this proactive approach is highly preferable to the alternative, which is finding yourself frozen in self-pity or negativity. It is totally appropriate, of course, to spend some time wallowing when experiencing a downturn in life, but you don’t want to get stuck there. Knowing some actions that can help you bounce back will assist with moving forward and getting to the other side of the struggle.
Sometimes, however, there is a larger obstacle involved, such as a depressive disorder or an anxiety disorder that is preventing your ability to rebound from a negative life event. When a mental health disorder causes symptoms that keep you struggling with life on a daily basis, it is time to see a therapist who can offer some guidance. Both depression and anxiety are highly manageable when you apply the tools that a licensed therapist can provide.
6 Things You Can Do When You are Struggling with Life
Not knowing what to do when a bout of the blues hits can be very disconcerting. The same thing applies to stressful situations that trigger feelings of fear and worry. Having some useful strategies for managing stress and emotions will come in handy as we navigate the bumpy road of life. Here are 6 useful tips:
Pamper yourself. Sometimes a little self-pampering can go a long way. Self-care during a rough patch in life may not even appear on your radar, but it should be a priority. By tending to your wellness, through such things as getting a therapeutic massage, taking baths with aromatherapy, filling the room with soothing music, or cooking yourself delicious but healthy meals, can make a tremendous difference in your attitude and outlook.
Choose to let go of your story. It is common to latch onto a challenging time emotionally, meaning that you begin to find solace in your unhappiness. It becomes your story, what you identify with and want to present to others. The sad person to whom life has done wrong. Break free from that negative narrative and rewrite your story with a hopeful, positive plot.
Take charge. Instead of passively waiting for life to improve, why not help the process along by taking control of your quality of life? Take responsibility for your own happiness by making necessary changes that will improve the situation, if it is something within your power to change. This empowers you and takes you from being a victim to circumstances to being in control of your destiny.
Set new goals. Sometimes just setting fresh new goals will help you move through a tough period in life. Focusing outward toward new aspirations instead of dwelling on the current difficult situation helps you to keep moving forward. Set some new short term and long-term goals, such as learning a new skill or planning a trip or learning a second language, and make a plan for achieving them.
Get active. Even though you may not be in the state of mind where you want to exercise, try to battle through that and do it anyway. Exercise is incredibly beneficial to our mental health. Try to incorporate some form of exercise or physical activity into each day, even if it is just a 15-minute walk, and you will begin to see your mood improve.
Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness can be woven into your daily life and accessed whenever you feel yourself drifting back into negative thought patterns. Mindfulness involves training yourself to redirect your thought distractions back toward the present moment. By teaching yourself to pay close attention to the sensory experience, such as what you can feel, smell, hear, and touch, while engaging in focused breathing you will reach a state of relaxation.
Am I Just Struggling with Life or is it a Mental Health Disorder?
Everyone goes through ups and downs in life. We all experience negative events from time to time, such as relationship problems, loss of a job, health issues, financial setbacks, and loss of a loved one. These are the unavoidable casualties of being on the planet. Any of these events can lead to feelings of sadness or stress, but when the emotional symptoms do not ease up after so many weeks a mental health disorder has possibly developed. Get to know the signs and symptoms of some of the most common mood disorders so you will recognize when it is time to get some professional help:
ANXIETY DISORDER
The anxiety spectrum of disorders includes:
Generalized anxiety disorder: Features constant excessive worry for much of the day, resulting in headaches, muscle tension, nausea, and trouble concentrating. GAD is the most prevalent form of anxiety in the U.S.
Panic disorder: Sudden and unpredictable feelings of terror, causing heart palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and dizziness. Many who experience panic disorder become isolated to avoid having another panic attack.
Specific phobias: Irrational fear of a specific thing, place, or situation. To manage this fear, the individual will begin to avoid triggers. Agoraphobia, for example, which is the fear of being trapped in a place or situation, can lead to isolation.
Trauma disorder: Unresolved trauma can lead to avoidance of people, places, or situations that trigger memories of the traumatic event. Flashbacks, nightmares, or repeated thoughts of the trauma stoke anxiety symptoms. Those with PTSD may avoid exposure to things that trigger the traumatic memory, and are prone to substance abuse as a form of self-medicating.
Social anxiety disorder: Intense and irrational fear of being judged or criticized. Because of the fear of being humiliated in public, people with social anxiety may avoid social situations completely.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder: Obsessive worries about such things as germs, causing harm, or a need for order can fuel compulsive behaviors in an attempt to manage the symptoms of intense anxiety caused by the obsession.
DEPRESSION
The depression disorders include:
Major depressive disorder. MDD is the most common depressive disorder and features persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or despair, fatigue, weight gain or loss, change in sleeping habits, loss of interest in usual activities or hobbies, slowed motor movements, and suicidal thought or attempts.
Post-partum depression. Post-partum depression affects 3 million new mothers per year and lasts about three months until the hormone levels normalize. This form of depression can disrupt bonding with the baby due to feelings of sadness, extreme irritability, change in eating habits, insomnia, mood swings, and even thoughts of harming baby or self.
Dysthymia. Dysthymia, also referred to as persistent depressive disorder, is a milder but chronic form of MDD that lasts more than two years. Dysthymia features low mood, loss of interest in activities, feelings of hopelessness, reduced appetite, feelings of low self-esteem, problems concentrating, and sleep problems.
Bipolar depression. Bipolar disorder is an affective, or mood, disorder that features extreme and unpredictable shifts between depressive periods and manic periods, with bipolar II featuring milder manic periods but more severe depressive periods.
When to Seek Help for a Mental Health Condition
When you suspect that your symptoms are more serious than simply feeling like you are struggling with life, it is a good idea to contact a mental health provider who can conduct a psychological evaluation. This involves an interview with a licensed therapist or psychiatrist who can collect enough information about your current symptoms and state of mind to hopefully make a diagnosis.
Generally, treatment for a mental health disorder like depression or anxiety will include medication, such as antidepressants, plus psychotherapy. Regular therapy sessions will help you work on changing negative or irrational thought patterns that keep you from living your best life.
The therapist might also encourage regular exercise and healthy dietary suggestions. Support groups can also be suggested, which allow small groups of individuals who share a common condition, such as depression, to discuss their personal struggles and support each other. Other complementary activities a therapist might prescribe could revolve around stress reduction, such as taking yoga classes or trying acupuncture.
Residential Treatment for a Higher Level of Care
For those individuals who continue to suffer from the mental health condition despite the outpatient interventions, a higher level of care is indicated. The residential setting offers a unique opportunity to take a break from daily cares and stressors and just focus on getting better. Residential mental health programs provide a much more customized and intensive treatment approach.
Treatment elements include:
Acute stabilization for individuals in crisis who need 24-7 monitoring.
Evidence-based psychotherapy using such modalities as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, prolonged exposure therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.
Group therapy sessions facilitated by a clinician.
Adjunctive therapies such as eye movement desensitization reprocessing or TMS therapy.
Medications such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anti-anxiety drugs, and antipsychotics.
Holistic therapies such as massage, meditation, art therapy, or equine therapy.
When your mental health does not improve using lifestyle and attitude tweaks, then it is appropriate to seek out psychological support from a mental health professional.

Therapeutic Horseback Riding – An Overview
Therapeutic Horseback Riding (THR) is a therapeutic program that provides equine assisted activities for individuals with disabilities in order to improve their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. This is done through an adaptive riding program that focuses not only on riding skills but also on the development of a relationship between the horse and rider. The program can include work both on the ground such as grooming, leading, or directing a horse, and activities on horseback. Therapeutic riding activities are conducted by certified therapeutic riding instructors in conjunction with trained volunteers. During riding activities a new rider or an individual with physical limitations is generality assisted by two side-walkers who walk alongside the horse, as well as a horse leader. These individuals are volunteers that have been trained to assist the instructor in the conduct of the therapeutic program. Therapeutic riding differs from hippo-therapy, one form of equine assisted therapy, in that in hippo-therapy a physical or occupational therapist uses only the movement of the horse to improve an individual’s sensory and motor skills. The therapist does not teach riding skills or seek to develop a relationship between the horse and rider. The primary goal of hippo-therapy is to improve the individual’s balance, posture, function, and mobility. Therapeutic riding is a broader program of therapy that can include multiple therapeutic elements simultaneously. Therapeutic riding combines the physical aspect of riding in improving balance, posture and mobility and adds the mental, emotional and cognitive skills required to ride a horse and develop a positive working relationship with the horse. This expansion of therapy beyond just the physical aspects involved in riding a horse can improve an individual’s emotional control, behavioral self-regulation and cognitive functioning and help them function more productively and effectively in society. Therapeutic riding centers and their instructors are certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International and therapy is conducted as part of an overall treatment plan developed in conjunction with a medical health professional. Safety is a paramount concern and therapeutic riding is not appropriate for individuals with certain disabilities. Instructors work with the health care provider to plan for the individual’s needs, appropriate supervision, and ensure rider safety. There are a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional disabilities that can benefit from the use of therapeutic riding. Some of the many individuals who research has proven can benefit from therapeutic horseback riding include those with attention deficit disorder, autism, amputations, brain injuries, stroke, cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, and a wide variety of emotional, cognitive, or mental disabilities. For those with physical limitations experiencing the rhythmic motion of a horse can be very beneficial to improve muscle function and control. Riding a horse moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to the human gait, so riders with physical needs often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. For individuals with mental and emotional challenges, the unique relationship formed with the horse can lead to increased confidence, patience and self-esteem There have been numerous studies that have shown evidence of the benefits of therapeutic riding. Individuals with cognitive disabilities such as autism or Downs Syndrome have shown demonstrated benefits from THR. Bass, Duchowny, and Llabre (2008) found that children with autism who participated in a therapeutic horseback riding program improved in sensory integration and directed attention as compared to the control group. While Biery and Kaufman (1989) showed that significant improvement was seen on standing and quadruped balance after the therapeutic riding program for individuals with Downs Syndrome A large amount of research in therapeutic riding has involved children with cerebral palsy as therapeutic riding has long been used as a method to help improve their physical abilities. Zadnikar and Kastrin (2011) conducted an analysis of multiple studies on the effectiveness of THR for children with cerebral palsy. It was found that riding lead to improved coordination, head and trunk control and improved gait. There are several reasons posited for these improvements. One is that the horse’s gait provides a precise, smooth, rhythmic, and repetitive pattern of movement to the rider that is similar to the mechanics of human gait. Another reason is the horse’s center of gravity is displaced three-dimensionally when walking, resulting in a movement that is very similar to that of the human pelvis during walking. A final reason for the physical benefits is that adjusting to the horse’s movements involves the use of muscles and joint movements which, over time, lead to increased strength and range of motion. Although these studies were focused on individuals with cerebral palsy, it is believed the physical benefits would also apply individuals with other types of physical disabilities as well. Therapeutic riding can be a great source of exercise and therapy for people with multiple sclerosis. They can participate in riding within their limits of strength and energy and still enjoy an active recreational activity. Much like individuals with cerebral palsy it can also help improve an individuals physical motor skills and help them stay limber and active. Silkwood-Sherer and Warmbier (2007) found that individuals demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in balance following 7 weeks of therapeutic riding. In looking at children with learning disabilities, Crothers (1994) theorized that riding a horse stimulates both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously to improve their cognitive abilities. It is also thought that the areas of the brain that control attention, impulses, and activity levels are directly stimulated. As energy is directed to different parts of the brain, and attention is called to many separate tasks at once (picture holding the reins, balancing, and directing the horse, all while completing a task), the neurotransmitters released when riding create an effect that is similar to the one created by stimulant medication that is normally prescribed for children with ADHD. This then makes it possible for an ADHD child to concentrate and to be less hyperactive, fidgety, or impulsive. Therapeutic riding has gained increasing use to treat posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and other mental illness with many organizations, including the Veterans Administration, establishing programs for veterans. These programs have proven extremely popular and anecdotally have shown great success. However, there has been no significant completed research on these veterans programs. Shambo and Seely (2010) conducted a study to measure specific changes and durability of change for adult women with PTSD and Borderline Personality Disorder who were victims of traumatic interpersonal violence, when treated with therapeutic riding. In this study, individuals showed significant positive changes in depression, dissociative symptoms, and treatment effectiveness overall. The change effect continued post treatment as participants’ scores showed even more improvement in follow ups four month later. It is believed that ongoing research into the effectiveness of veterans and other mental health aspects of therapeutic riding programs will show similar benefits. Therapeutic riding also has benefits that are not always directly measurable, but are seen in the perceptions of others who interact with individuals. Miller and Alson (2004) studied the benefits that therapeutic riding has on children with disabilities through the eyes of their parents. The results indicated that the parent noted significant changes in their children who are in these types of programs including increases in self-esteem, following directions to the fullest, and better socialization skills. Viewing the equine as a partner provides opportunities for relationship building and interpersonal skill development with all individuals who participate in therapeutic riding activities. Because of this potential emotional benefit, recent research studies have looked into the impact of therapeutic riding with a variety of populations. Kaiser, Smith, Heleski, and Spence (2006) used an 8-week therapeutic riding program, to demonstrate decreases in anger in adolescent males. Additionally, the mothers’ perceptions of their sons’ behaviors improved. Another study found statistically significant improvements in self-concept, intellectual and school status, popularity, happiness, and satisfaction in emotionally and behaviorally challenged teens (Emory, 1992). To maintain therapeutic standards the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.) is the primary organization for the certification of therapeutic riding centers and instructors. The organization establishes and maintains standards to promote safety and achieve optimal outcomes for individuals in equine assisted therapies. It is focused on the establishment of industry guidelines for the practice and teaching of therapeutic riding to ensure that centers and instructors maintain the safest, most ethical and most effective programs possible. There are over 4,600 certified PATH instructors and 850 PATH centers worldwide that provide therapeutic riding and other equine assisted activities and therapy. To become a PATH certified riding instructor an individual must successfully complete a skills assessment and certification exam, complete 25 mentored instruction hours conducting classes with a certified PATH professional, and complete an on-site certification event. The certification event is the candidate’s final evaluation. Typically a two day event, it is divided into two categories; horsemanship and teaching ability. An individual has two years to complete all of the requirements to obtain certification once they start the certification process. Once an individual obtains their certification they must document a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education annually, of which at least 6 hours must be disability education. Disability education is designed to provide instructors with greater understanding of the physical, social, cognitive and/or behavioral impacts experienced by individuals with disabilities, mental health disorders or emotional trauma. The education should help the instructor understand how to communicate with and more effectively instruct a wide range participants. Beyond the basic certification level, individuals can obtain advanced and master riding instructor certification through demonstrating increasing levels of skill and experience through an extremely rigorous certification process. The certification requirements work to insure that therapeutic programs provide a safe and beneficial environment for the riders, volunteers, and the horses involved in the program. The amount of benefit gained through therapeutic riding differs from person to person based on many factors such as the type of disability, severity of disability, motivation of the rider and connection between horse and rider. Unlike exercise machines that may only focus on one muscle group at a time and do not use natural body movements, riding forces the rider to make use of the entire body to steer, control, adjust the horse and maintain balance. Because horses require not only physical skill but also cognitive skill for achievement, riding reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the rider. During traditional therapeutic techniques patients often reach a plateau where they may lose motivation. However, the pleasure and excitement of riding can provide additional motivation to encourage patients to work through their pain and discomfort. The act of accomplishing something that even able-bodied people are sometimes afraid to try can also sometimes benefit those with disabilities, providing them with additional confidence and self-esteem. It is clear from the research and from the responses of individual participants that therapeutic riding is a physical activity that can provide significant benefits to individuals with physical, emotional, or mental challenges. It requires an individual to control and exercise a wide range of muscles, while simultaneously having the individual exercise emotional and cognitive skills required to maintain control of the horse. Like any physical activity it provides benefits beyond those to the muscular skeletal and cardiovascular systems. There are boosts to cognitive skills as well as to emotional well-being. The interaction with the horse adds an additional element to the equation in that the individual can establish a relationship or connection with their equine partner. Therapeutic riding is a beneficial physical activity has demonstrated the ability to change and benefit the lives of numerous individuals and assist them to live a healthier, more active, and more productive life. Medical Management of the Colicky Foal
New Post has been published on http://lovehorses.net/medical-management-of-the-colicky-foal/
Medical Management of the Colicky Foal
Pain control, fluid therapy, intestinal motility management, and nutritional support are all used to combat colic in foals.
Photo: Anne M. Eberhardt/The Horse
Just like with their adult counter parts, some foals suffering a bout of colic could require surgery to relieve the pain and fix the problem. However many cases of colic in foals can be corrected medically with the assistance of a veterinarian.
At the American Association of Equine Practitioners Focus on Colic Meeting, held July 24-26 in Indianapolis, Ind., Fairfield T. Bain, DVM, MBA, Dipl. ACVIM, ACVP, ACVECC, an internist at Equine Sports Medicine & Surgery in Weatherford, Texas, discussed several methods by which to medically manage colic in foals.
A veterinarian should first perform a physical examination of a colicky foal to determine the severity of the problem.
"Perhaps the most important issue in approaching the foal with colic is to determine the specific cause and whether the problem is or has the potential to require surgical treatment for correction," Bain began, noting the advancements in imaging and endoscospy that have aided the ease of monitoring a colicky foal.
"Today we are able to accurately identify alteration in content and structure of abdominal organs of the foal rapidly and easily using ultrasound and monitor the condition over time," he said. "Abdominal radiography is occasionally useful in evaluating the contents of the foal's abdominal cavity.
"Endoscopy also has its place in the evaluation of abdominal pain in the foal, from gastroscopy in the patient suspected in having gastric ulcer disease to rectal endoscopy for assessment of suspected atresia coli (lack of a segment of intestine)," he added.
"Following on the information presented in the initial evaluation and the ultrasound examination of the foal, we will create an outline approach to medical interventions including pain control, fluid therapy, intestinal motility management, and nutritional support."
Pain Control
Bain explained that in most cases, the first step in medically managing the colicky foal is to provide pain management.
"Flunixin meglumine (Banamine) is commonly used as a first line medication to control mild to moderate abdominal pain," he continued. "More severe pain may require medications such as alpha-2 agonists (e.g., xylazine) to control pain and prevent secondary injury to the foal."
He added that in some cases opiate drugs can be used alone or in combination with another analgesic to provide relief.
Bain explained that in specific cases, different types of pain control can be employed. Pain caused by colonic gas distension related to a meconium impaction, pain caused by colonic fluid distension related to the onset of rotavirus infections, and pain caused by colonic cramping have all been noted to respond well to certain analgesics. Further, pain caused by gastric distension associated with intestinal reflux can be relieved by passing a nasogastric tube to allow the reflux to exit the stomach.
Bain stressed it's important for horse owners to seek veterinary care for foals in pain, as a veterinarian will be able to select the ideal pain management option for each individual situation.
Fluid Therapy
Bain continued to explain that fluid therapy and electrolytes are often needed to help the colicky foal's cardiovascular system recover from fluid loss and inadequate fluid intake.
"Usually, the best first choice is a balanced electrolyte crystalloid solution," he said. "An initial loading (dose) of 10 to 20 milliliters per kilogram (of body weight) may be given to correct dehydration or poor perfusion. Maintenance fluid requirements should then be considered as well as ongoing losses from gastric reflux or diarrhea fluid."
In some cases, he said, veterinarians will add glucose to the fluids as an additional energy source for the foals. He noted, though, that the foal should be closely monitored for hypernatremia (or an elevated sodium level in the bloodstream) caused by "increased free water loss in the urine with varying degrees of hyperglycemia (an elevated level of blood glucose)."
"The duration of fluid therapy for the colicky foal will be determined by the type of lesion and the progression of the medical condition," Bain added. "Some dehydrated foals with mild to moderate abdominal pain may respond to initial rehydration with no additional fluid requirements, whereas those with colic associated with enteritis or a surgical lesion could require more prolonged intravenous fluid therapy, especially if prolonged ileus (the intestine's inability to function properly) is a component of the disease process."
Bain also relayed that some colicky foals could benefit from receiving colloids (particles that remain within the blood vessel space to maintain fluid within the vessel) to support certain conditions that negatively affect the foal's intestines. Foals with Lawsonia intracellularis infections often benefit from colloid therapy because of massive protein loss from the vessel space that occurs with this condition, he said.
Additionally, he noted that plasma administration can benefit foals with colicky conditions including:
Failure of passive transfer of colostral antibodies; and
Enteritis with infections such as Clostridium perfringens or C. Difficile.
Intestinal Motility Management
Bain explained that some colicky foals will benefit from prokinetic drugs, which are designed to encourage movement in the gastrointestinal tract.
"Improvement of gastric emptying and small intestinal motility may be helpful in improving the outcomes for foals affected with enteritis or gastroduodenal ulcer disease," he said, noting that the most common prokinetics used in his practice include bethanecol, metoclopramide, and neostigmine.
"In theory, the use of a prokinetic in the presence of a physical obstruction–an example being a duodenal stricture–would be contraindicated, because it would potentially cause pushing against an impassable point and result in increased pain," he noted.
Nutritional Management
Finally, Bain discussed the role of nutritional management in some cases of foal colic.
"In some foals, simple restriction of suckling to short periods of time may be useful, especially when there is some component of delayed gastric emptying involved, such as the foal with enteritis, ileus, or duodenal stricture," he explained.
Further, he added, foals that have lost high levels of plasma protein could benefit from a high-nitrogen supplement, which could help maintain a proper plasma concentration and body weight in affected foals.
"Monitoring and adjustment of nutritional intake may be required as diarrhea can result from increased intestinal luminal osmotic load that results from the use of these high nitrogen products," Bain noted.
Take-Home Message
Although some conditions that cause colic in foals and young horses will need to be corrected surgically, there are several means by which to correct other problems medically. Working closely with a veterinarian will ensure a foal receives the proper treatment for the type of colic he has.

Psychiatric practices have come quite a long ways from their origins in insane asylums and their practices in lobotomies but one thing has remained constant- the view that there is a right and wrong when it comes to the matters of the mind. What actually constitutes a mental illness today can be traced back toKraepelin’s idea that all mental illnesses stem from biological deviations as well as Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of where these emotions and outward effects can originate from. But is this true? Or do humans just determine what is considered socially expectable and what is not? The concentration of this article is on individual personalities such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder and wether or not there is always a biological unbalance associated with a mental condition. I’m personally interested if the mind truly has the power to “right to body” in a sense and if these are really conditions or instead simply personalities of the mind and intern part of the individual. Do mental conditions hide a person’s true self or revile it? Ultimately, what would provoke someone to want to change, that is change who they have been their entire life?
According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America, Anxiety is the most common mental illness in America making up 18% of the population. Depression closely follows at 6.7%, Schizophrenia at 1.1% and Bi-Polar at 2.6% (National Institute of Mental Health). Often times, people suffer from more than one. Anxiety and depression are becoming quiet common in young people today. In fact 13% of college students have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression. There are also people who experience  some of the symptoms but are never diagnosed, lacking the biological evidence as was the case with my sister. During her junior year in college, she experienced a panic attack followed by periods of insomnia. One night she was rushed to the hospital after being unable to breath. But after running a few tests, they deemed her “fine”. But what is the definition of fine and whose definition is it?
On April 18, 2013 I interviewed Dr. Carole Harris who has been practicing psychiatric treatment since 1991 in areas such as: adolescent psychiatric programs, the Country of Orange’s Drug and Alcohol Program and now has opened up a private practice in Huntington Beach, California where she provides traditional therapy as well as equine assisted psychotherapy. She invited me to her new facility at Orange Park Acres in Orange, CA. There she gave a demonstrated what they do there in regards to equine assisted psychotherapy.
Up a few windy roads, secreted in a quiet and peaceful neighborhood, I knocked on the new red door. Dr. Harris along with Marissa Walker, the team’s horse professional, greeted me warmly into what appeared to look more like a home than a facility. Immediately, they brought me though the spacious house to the dusty backyard. Around a mossy-green pool and behind a barn they showed me a slightly larger, brown horse. Walker explained that horses have the ability to mirror human emotions and intern communicate what an individual is feeling. I proceeded to follow them into the space, enclosed by a rusty, white fence. Silence prevailed as they stepped back and left me with the horse. I started to ask what his name was, how old he was and how many years he had been in training. But instead of answers Dr. Harris responded with questions. What would you call him? What do you think? Everything that happened in the reserved space represented something in my life. I felt pressured and on edge, as they continued to comment on everything the horse was doing and speculate of what it might entail. Midway though, a grey speckled pig entered the space in which the horse quickly scared it away. It scampered back to underneath some nearby trees. More questions resumed. I tried to answer them best I could, but I felt as if they were pressing for answers to questions that did not exist. Eventually the session ended, in which Dr. Harris explained what she believed I was feeling. I was surprised by the over simplified nature but at the same time knew that this was not how the world worked and truly how I felt. Following her back into the house, we sat down in the kitchen. Here we switched rolls. I became the interviewer, she the interviewee.
Interviewer: What was your childhood like?
Dr. Harris: I grew up by my identical twin. I have an older brother and younger brother and younger sister so I grew up with a big family.
Interviewer: And you grew up with two parents?
Dr. Harris: Two parents up until the age of ten. (She takes a long pause)…and than we went though a divorce.
Interviewer: Do you have any relatives or close friends that suffer from a mental conditions?
Dr. Harris: I have a cousin…he’s two years older than I am, very close. He, after 9/11…he broke down and had a sever bi-polar episode for 5 years. He’s better now. He went from doctor to doctor, taking medication and couldn’t sleep…he went into a manic episode…sever…he didn’t sleep for weeks.
Interviewer: Did you aid him in any way?
Dr. Harris: I took him to see a psychologist and tried to get him to stick to one…but he didn’t want to and I tried to help him get his medications together.
Interviewer: Has the use of medication and diagnosis changed during your time?
Dr. Harris: When I first started learning I was taught not to put a diagnosis on someone because you are putting a label on them. And I still believe that. Cause when people get a label on themselves, they go with it and think that, even if they don’t have to be. And there are many better medications than they had back than….And I try and help people not take medication unless they need it because I think they can do things if their brain is strong enough. They can…don’t have to be medicated since there are so many side-effects. It depends on the situation though….if it’s genetic or situational.
Interviewer: Are all mental conditions genetic?
Dr. Harris: No.
Interviewer: Can your mind produce biological off-balances?
Dr. Harris: Let’s say this person that had a gun held to her head, has taken that to extreme and become mentally ill because of that. So trauma. I think death is a very difficult thing to get though….like being the only survivor of something but I think that you can look at this and live life to it’s fullest.
Interviewer: You said that you don’t like to put a label on people but do you know ahead of time when they come in.
Dr. Harris: They tell me on the phone sometimes but I only know that much, they say the rest.
Interviewer: Are there any specific mental conditions that you focus on?
Dr. Harris: Post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety. I stay away from the hard core ones like schizophrenia.
Interviewer: Say that someone has depression and it’s been biologically proven, does the mind have the power to right the body?
Dr. Harris: I think so. But it takes a lot of work and constant thought about it. But sometimes you have to take the medication.  I think you have to have a strong mind to do it, not a lot of people do. It takes practice maybe every second of the day. I think exercise and getting out of the house helps.
Interviewer: Does this mean a change in life style?
Dr. Harris: Yes. Because when you are depressed, you want to stay in the house and isolate yourself. But you can’t do that you have to go outside, exercise and meet people. But that’s not what depressed people feel like doing.
Interviewer: Is a mental condition ever just a person’s personality?
Dr. Harris: No….not depression. Well (She pauses, glancing away)…you can tell the difference some people like to be negative and that is their personality. Some people just like to focus on the negative. But you can tell the difference.
Interviewer: Is there a fine line between the two?
Dr. Harris: Well someone can throw themselves into depression by being negative. Or they just like to complain.
Interviewer: Is this bad?
Dr. Harris: I don’t think it’s healthy, because the person feels unhappy. And I think we are all searching for happiness and they don’t find it because everything is bad or wrong. And they distance themselves because no one wants to be around that negativity and it gets worse for them. It’s like a….it just doesn’t work. Self fulfilling prophesy.
Interviewer: Do you believe that someone can change their perspective or are they born with say this negativity and that is who they are?
Dr. Harris: I think people are born pessimistic or optimistic. But you can really work on it, if you want to change it.
Interviewer: Is it wrong to not want to change?
Dr. Harris: If it works for them….Some people like to get a lot attention. They say pessimistic people live longer because they don’t take many risks. (She laughs lightly)
Interviewer: Than if you always take medication, does this not take over who you are as a person?
Dr. Harris: No….like an anti depression just allows you to cope with things differently but doesn’t change your personality. But say a bi-polar or schizophrenia takes medication, it does change their personality and level it out but they are happier in life. Like in a schizophrenia if you interacted with them you’d think they were erratic but once they are on the medication, they are just like you.
Interviewer: Is that not than based on what someone else is telling them what the norm is?
Dr. Harris: Yeah.
Interviewer: So in a sense do they change who they are, since the definition of what the norm is changes from them based on what someone says it is?
Dr. Harris: On a natural level yeah…because if we didn’t take a medication…I think everyone wants to be normal and happy. It would change their natural state but they change it to feel happy. (She places one leg over the other).
Interviewer: What does someone have to give up to be happy if they have a mental condition?
Dr. Harris: They have to give up their past beliefs…like everything is bad, or they had a bad childhood or everyone is against them.
Interviewer: Where than does the imagine of yourself come from if you have to give up your past?
Dr. Harris: Maybe not give up…but accept and coming to terms with that is what happened and making sense of it so that it doesn’t make you unhappy.
Interviewer: Do you ever have patience that feel fine again but end up falling back into their old self?
Dr. Harris: All the time.
Interviewer: Than why not just take a pill?
Dr. Harris: Because if someone works though it,it shows me they are willing to look at their new situation and work though it. Take a pill is a quick fix, like putting a band-ad over the problem. Because eventually you are going to stop taking the pill.
Interviewer: Do you ever have anyone that is brought in and doesn’t want to change?
Dr. Harris: Yes, like sometimes a wife will bring her husband in and he will say that he doesn’t have a problem but that his wife does and doesn’t need help. I try and tell them  that they cannot change other people only yourself.
Interviewer: How do you determine if theory is needed?
Dr. Harris: If they want it and feel like they need it. It’s a perspective…some people have very minor conditions but if they are struggling and need someone to talk to and need help working something out than I will. And those people are typically short term opposed to long term.
Interviewer: Do you ever deny services?
Dr. Harris:Yeah.
Interviewer: What would be some of the reasons?
Dr. Harris: If they are someone I am not comfortable working with or if they need a lot of attention…if they want to call me all the time. Or children…who I am not trained to work with.
Interview: How much of the control do humans have over the future?
Dr. Harris: I think we have 100% control over our own lives…99% of control over our own lives. I can go live anywhere I want to, I can have kids if I want to. If I biologically can’t have kids, I can adopt. You can do things and get around other things…I could be broke but I could go and rob a bank and find ways to get money. So I think we have total control. It’s just the way you think about things…you put limitations on your life.
Interviewer: Do you have less control as an adolescent?
Dr. Harris: Yes. You don’t know much….experience or knowledge of the world. People treat you differently. You can’t get a job. You could rob people though.
Interviewer: What would you say to a person in this situation?
Dr. Harris: Self esteem makes a big difference…you can always leave or talk to a teacher. I think we are either born with drive or pessimism.
Interviewer: Do you think that it is wrong to not contribute or influence the world around them?
Dr. Harris: I think those people make up the world. It’s not wrong. Some people are unhappy because they don’t have drive and feel like failures in life. Everybody wants to be rich or famous or whatever. If everyone had drive than there would be too much competition.

I finally registered for January/spring classes! I’m super excited as it’s my last semester at community college and then I’ll be transferring to a 4 year university just a few hours away. It’s all so exciting! I didn’t expect my last semester to come so quickly, but I guess it’s true that time flies when you’re balls to the wall busy 24/7 huh?
