 Days with Kelsey were yellow among the sunflowers.

 Nights with Marielle were orange under the streetlights.

 ***

 Sara was seven when she met Kelsey.

 In all her seven years of life, she had never seen anything so beautiful as this tall girl with blue eyes and blonde braids and a white cotton dress, standing in a sunflower field like they were her best buddies. By the end of the summer before third grade, Sara’s yellow and blue pencils had been sharpened down to inch-long stubs.

He looked different from his profile pictures. His hair was blue, for one thing. For another, he had wide-framed glasses on that made him look soft and not at all intimidating. His pictures really didn’t do him justice, but that was neither here nor there. Shane sucked in a breath to focus himself. It was show time.
