She'd hit a sort of rock bottom, a long time in the making, which anyone who knew her could have told her months ago. Her drinking and drug use became out of hand, on top of the sleeping with anyone and anything that expressed interest, lead to a dark hole. Maybe it was about time for her to really grow up. Margot only now was starting to realize how her self-destruction was effecting those around her. To make it even worse, she was sure there was a reason to apologize to Sofia, but she wasn't even sure what for. The woman was a saint for putting up with Margot's bullshit for years and barely even batting an eye. "Sorry I've been all MIA." A phrase she's used probably a bit too frequently in her life. Margot tended to avoid the people that mattered when she was in a downward spiral. But, perhaps it still wasn't a great acknowledgment of being a shitty friend. "How are you? How is the kid?" She asked a bit eagerly. Margot leaned forward, resting her elbows on the surface of the table. "I missed you guys."

She had spent her entire life training for this moment through little league and even attending Gravesend Academy, an Exy feeder school. Since it's Exy program was established in 1989, they had quickly become one of the best programs globally and had the highest yield of NCAA Champions, members of the US Court, and professional athletes. Attending Gravesend had secured her future before she even turned fourteen years old as Tetsuji Moriyama offered her a standing contract if she continued growing as a player and could prove useful to his dynasty.

!?⠀ ◞ ✻ — However, by the time senior year had rolled around, Margot Evans had fallen out of love with Exy. She had made the starting lineup as their defensive dealer, became the first female captain at the high school level, and was considered one of the greatest players of her generation, alongside Riko Moriyama and Kevin Day. Everyone had their eyes on Margot and she was already a contender for Riko's Perfect Court, unofficially branding her as the third member. In November, she's benched for undisclosed health reasons and does not return for the rest of the season, letting her entire future fall apart in just seventy-two hours. With that, Margot slowly slides into obscurity without a collegiate Exy contract and desire to play the game.

!?⠀ ◞ ✻ — Two years after graduation, David Wymack—head coach of the Palmetto State University Foxes in South Carolina—promises that he can make Margot love Exy again. Originally, Margot had been too perfect for his team of misfits, but seeing how broken the girl had become and her rotted view of the sport, he takes a chance on her to lead them to the national championship even if the scales are tipped against them.

She automatically wants to assure the other she won't— that she doesn't. Her days with Charles are far behind her, but her criticism still maintains his voice.

So, Esme does what she's best at and offers the other a beaming, appreciative smile. "You are very kind, thank you." It's all she can think of to say without outright lying. Esme is not unfamiliar with such sentiments; she tells the people she cares for and her clients something in the same vein every single day, but she has still yet to master accepting they are true of her.
