Edith had spent almost all of her free time (when not glued to Nim’s bedside at Mungo’s) making sure Nim could actually get around the cottage when she was released. The nurses had said recovery would take some time, and that Nim should take it easy. The woman Edith loved beyond reason almost certainly would not take it easy, but Edi could at least try and make it possible.

“Welcome home, babe!” She said, spinning in a circle in the living room. Edith had actually cleaned. Things Nim used regularly were on lower shelves so she didn’t strain herself too much. “I got us take out, and the baker gave me like, five loaves of bread when I told him you’d be home today.”

"Well, you aren't listening!" it was Elaine's face that stares back at him. It was some distorted version of his own voice that shouts. "I'm walking around!"

She had known about Mark's death long before anyone else. She'd talked about it with such carelessness in the same manner that good mornings were said. She had added his name to one of her logs. She had shown galahad first. He'd held her hand so she could pull the old thing from the moat and not worry about falling in. She had held the log up and said, quite plainly, " the poor man's been killed."

it was not long after that that Cornwall fell. The journey from Camelot to Tintagel was one that was meant to ease the Lady Igraine into her new home. To do that properly, Nimue needed to get there and pick up the pieces Mark's wife had left behind. From what Nimue had gathered, the Irish Queen had, at her husband's request, worked towards a cure for Duchess' madness.

it seemed a shame Isolde would never get to finish her work... but that death was a different story.

"I can't just magick a bridge back together!" she had though. In her fit of screaming at him, the bridge had begun to be rebuilt and fall back apart all at her unknowing whim. This was the kind of thing Merlin had wanted to teach her. This was the kind of thing she had begun to learn on the Isle, but in both cases, she preferred to run.

That future seemed to scare her most.

"I'm. Not. Going. In. I. Will. Drown." She said finally. "There has to be shallow water. Or no water. I'm not going."

Sometimes Nimue really wants to ask why violence can't be used to solve every problem, but that's the thing. She realizes in theory violence isn't always the solution, but in her eyes it's usually the easiest solution. She has enough awareness to process people don't react well to violence though, so she doesn't always utilize it unless the people she cares about- her companions- seem to mostly unanimously agree violence is the solution, in which she proceeds to brutally murder whoever they were facing.

Nimue is funny in general because she's so elegant and seemingly a logical woman, stoic but well-meaning. Maybe a bit ruthless. Then you see her in fights and she is shockingly brutal and then there are occasional signs of her being more sadistic than she lets on and then one day she displays her utter lack of real understanding of morality and fails to pretend like she understands it this time.

Nimue resists the urge because she doesn't want to hurt her companions, fears losing control of herself, fears being abandoned, and out of spite of being told what to do. She does not resist it for morality reasons. She is, however, being slowly taught about morality by being around her companions...keyword being slowly.

Truthfully, Nimue felt a sort of kinship with Shadowheart. They didn't know much about one another, sure, but they also didn't know much about themselves. Both felt tinged with a darkness they couldn't manage to escape. Did they want to escape the shadows, at all?

As always, questions of looming darkness were shoved into the back of her mind as she moved to sit next to the cleric in the, well, dark. The night. Most of the camp was asleep.

Ok, so, his footwear is my own weird- headcanon that the fae are super-connected to the earth, so they don't like footwear. Nimue doesn't wear anything on her feet, Lancelot has a sort of simple sandal (but goes barefoot often) and then Galahad has these weird sandals!

Galahad's sandals are the closest to being more standard footwear since he is the farthest removed from the fae, but it's still a part of his heritage. (Much to his chagrin. He's got Daddy issues in this AU.)

It think about Galahad's discovery and his subsequent becoming a knight quite a lot.

It is based solely on the fact that all his deeds and heroic acts in protecting his village started a rumor saying that it was lancelot who did them. This prompts and adventuring Sir Bors to come and investigate because what if that is Lancelot? Why isn't he in Camelot? etc etc. This, of course, leads to Galahad being discovered and absolutely everything that Lancelot's myth says lance is.

Galahad is his father's son in that everything that Lancelot should be in his own myth is what Lancelot could never be in reality and that leads into Galahad's purpose and success/failure of the grail quest ( because he was supposed to bring it back to Camelot and he never does.)

whereas Nimue, who got abducted by Avalon, left the isle of her own volition, and got to camelot much of the same way-- her own volition-- does things her way at her own pace. She also became court sorcerer after merlin's 'disappearance" by her own choosing, as much as one can 'choose' a positon like that, especially with the headspace Arthur would be in.

She needs to be close to Arthur. Why? she is just certain that that is the one thing she was made for. She sits more as a reflection of Lancelot's humanity and failures as she herself is the consensual child, Galahad's twin/ irish twin, but also born too late and arriving too early.

She sits at the end of Merlin's schemes and is in his visions as a reward and signifier that he can rest. He's going to have her and she's going to make sure Arthur stays the once and future king. She is the good ending.

She's a signifier of his success in this impossible dream of a great kingdom that Merlin wants to build. She just isn't right when he meets her.

i think she makes her way to camelot and her being born too late and arriving too early cultivate as a realization of failure of this future. I think she's here because she understands she's not quite right and everything around her is not quite right either. She's supposed to take arthur, to ensure a survival of this future, to avalon. Let him sit and come back when things are right, because the original reason for his need to go to Avalon no longer exists.

It would explain why Merlin commandeers her and insists on tutoriting her-- he's going to make that future the way he wants it to be. If he can fix it he will try.

Since Nimue has spent most of her life in avalon, and other parts of the Other World i think she's more comfortable with the idea that she isn't supposed to be. it is all very funny and I think she frequently, knowingly or unknowingly, reminds Merlin he can't change the course of things. Everything has to end.

Nimue would rather be in the Other World than the country of man. it has shaped her into the chaotic feral thing she is--but it at least makes sense. The rules are hard and fast. Everything has a beginning, middle, and end.

She's most comfortable In Arawn's country because it is the country of ends. Everything is as it should be there. But, she can't get there to stay.

To get there, you need to go through the forests of souls. you know you've made it there when you can see the White stag ( or hart) of Arawn. It is always pursued by the white hounds of Arawn. The stag and the hounds in welsh tradition represent the seasonal changes and the order of the universe. this would explain why she's always following it and why many myths say catching the stag is so important ( it has a catch death in a sack kind of story).

I think Nimue's trapping of Merlin in a tree is kind of a last resort, a way to force him into Arawn's country and to his end as it should be: a good death. She has work to do. She needs to take Arthur to truely 'fix' things. Being taught and tutored and monitored by Merlin only disorients her and continues to let everything fester and become significantly worse.

After his death she can do her job: take Arthur to Avalon. but because of merlin's meddling the future is a tangle and an endless web ( and maybe there's some magic dementia that screwed things up more at the end there) she can't. its too late. things need to conclude in this new way to reach a proper end. She can only take Arthur to avalon through Arawn's country, because that's the way the dying go.
