SURPRISE. you fell into my trap and are now reading some oc lore.

relationship thoughts: ivy and lorne aren't together or flirting. they're like siblings to me. lorne and adonis though....... go my gayboys.

meanwhile ivy has a girlfriend named cordelia. i haven't drawn cordelia, but she's a knight of a noble house. she can also see and interact with spirits of the deceased that have yet to move on.

there's a cohesive story with these characters that i've rewritten 3-ish times now.... not 100% sure if i'll ever get around to finishing the whole thing, but it's been slow-cooking in my brain.

ivy's hair gains its gray streaks + lorne gets his face scar well into the events of the story, so this takes place at least a few months into things. they knew each other years before the story started, though :]

Washing up ashore was the best thing that could have happened to Lola after that voyage. She still might not have been anywhere near her prime, however, just the fact that she couldn’t feel the ground moving underneath her feet anymore did wonders for her nausea and her spirits. It was said that upon their arrival the pirate who was in charge of them should give them information about this new island and where they would be. Since Lola was aware that the one responsible for her was facing a hard time on his own, she decided to find him instead of letting him find her. Still weak and pale, the Spaniard mustered a bravado as she walked over to him. “Hey,” she greeted, somewhat sheepishly. “I came to check on you,” Lola explained.

thinking about the relationship dynamic between adonis, lorne, & ivy.. they're all close, but in notably different ways and i like exploring that

adonis & lorne: the lovers. my gayboys. etc. they were friends for a while before either one caught feelings. lorne had been working as his personal guard. it took a while to become friends in the first place. a crush felt like crossing the line for both. no one directly confessed.. they probably kissed while drunk, spent a few weeks agonizing if the other remembered it, and then tensely brought it up again before entering proper courtship.

lorne & ivy: almost a sibling dynamic between them? lorne would be the older brother. they frequently mess with each other to the point where people less familiar with them wonder if it's bullying. they trust each other with their lives, but often keep secrets from each other anyways. lorne used to hide his feelings for adonis, while ivy used to hide her dark magic abilities when she first started practicing, etc.

ivy & adonis: their relationship started as the awkward "we know this guy and are friends with him, so we'll be friends too." adonis's dark magic affliction required him and ivy to get closer, though, since she spent time with him to keep him alive (tl dr: he was cursed). she doesn't take care of him aside from helping with his curse, though. she's not a mom friend or an older sister figure. their friendship grew more organically once he was cured.. they're not as close as they are individually with lorne, but they do trust each other.

✨: how did you come up with the oc's name?

bramble- the name of a thorny plant felt right for a creature with a thorny personality :D also it just has a really good mouthfeel if that makes sense

lorne- i liked the sound of it so i picked it from a list wbsdjkf

ruarc- i used the name for random ocs from 2018-2022.. it finally stuck on the ruarc we know and love in october. it means hero/champion if i remember right which is fun bc ruarc is decidedly against becoming any kind of famous hero (she likes anonymity)

🍀: what originally inspired the oc?

bramble- falconry. i think the bond between raptors and falconers is really fascinating. btw bramble started out as a flight rising dragon :o she's actually still in my lair. her design has changed a ton though lol

lorne- the song "hungover in the city of dust" by autoheart along with rekke from pillars of eternity 2 (redhead.. tall and buff.. scar on face.. they look similar wnsjdkf)

ruarc- my baldur's gate 3 bard! i didn't plan on getting attached but she ended up as one of my most beloved ocs. hee

🧠: what do you like most about the oc?

bramble- i like how she stays wild despite being lorne's companion. he can't trust that she'll always return to his side or that she won't turn her claws on him. her design is pretty fun too (had made her a wyvern but struggled with the design until i decided to use the mayfly dragon adopt i got from @/tetrameryxx for her new appearance)

lorne- his design and his ties to other characters.. he's a swordsman w a dad bod and he has so many friends. what's not to love !!

ruarc- her personality. i've been playing her in a dnd campaign with my family and it's so fun roleplaying as her bc she has a very playful/outgoing personality that i rarely show irl. also her design... fond of her outfit and how easy it's been to make a cosplay of it hee

1. what is the character's go-to drink order?

definitely something fruity.. can’t think of anything specific rn but it’s definitely cold and with fruit in it. she’ll nearly always get a cold drink, even if it’s snowing outside.

2. what is their grooming routine?

she takes care of herself really well most days- washes her face with nice-smelling soap, uses leave-in conditioner for her wavy hair, etc.. the only times she slips up in her little daily routine are when she’s in a depressive episode after burning herself out or is in a place without running water.

3. what was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go?

two pairs of glass daggers.. they’re Very Nice. she commissioned them from a blacksmith she met while traveling with adonis and lorne.

one pair has greenish glass with a silvery hilt and a leaf motif. the other pair has bluish glass with a gold hilt and a star motif.

she began courting cordelia by offering her the blue/gold set. they got along super well and became girlfriends <3

eventually, the two of them had to travel a long distance apart. they swapped one dagger with each other to feel close while apart. even after they reunited, they’ve kept their pairs mixed :-)

while the daggers aren’t enchanted, ivy can channel dark magic through them. they glow and look like uranium glass when she does it!

here's a quick rough draft of what the daggers look like :O using the skyrim glass dagger as a base for now until i come up with something better. the daggers aren't super practical tbh.. but since ivy fights with magic and cordelia fights with a greatsword, they don't have to worry about their practicality that much lol

7. describe the shoes they’re wearing.

hmm… the post-apoc equivalent of doc martens lol. tough and nice-looking. they’re usually a little muddy from exploring old ruins and traveling.

8. describe the place where they sleep.

ivy’s bedroom is cery cozy and cluttered! she’s got a bed in the corner that’s covered in a heap of blankets (which she usually sleeps on top of instead of under).

there are shelves with all her books, trinkets, and gifts from her friends and family. ivy also has a desk in her bedroom that she studies at. there’s about a 50/50 chance of her falling asleep at the desk instead of in bed tbh

the lighting is very dim. during the day, it only comes in through a window which is almost always covered by decorative curtains. at night, she keeps a lantern lit over her desk.

1. what is the character's go-to drink order?

chai! lorne grew up in a place where it was basically the most common/popular drink around. iced or hot, doesn’t matter, he loves it. bonus points if it has aromatic herbs & spices.

2. what is their grooming routine?

it’s pretty simple- he brushes his hair with his fingers, washes his face with water, and puts on a little sunscreen (he’s got that redhead complexion). if he has a lot of spare time, he’ll take some time to stretch- gotta take care of your body when you’re a swordsman!

3. what was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go?

lorne’s most expensive purchase was his prosthesis (left lower leg. i used to have it that he lost his forearm, but changed it to his leg in my latest story rewrite). he got it custom designed and had it built to be extremely durable.

7. describe the shoes they’re wearing.

well-worn boots with a steel toe and metal shin-guards.

8. describe the place where they sleep.

lorne’s bedroom is surprisingly empty.. he’s used to having to travel constantly & fitting all his belongings into one or two bags.

even in a permanent home, lorne keeps it pretty bare, only using a small shelf on the wall to display a few of his keepsakes at a time. he keeps a box under the bed with the others and swaps them out when he feels like it. he makes his bed about half the time. there’s a desk in his room like ivy’s, but he doesn’t use it very often. adonis uses it more than he does tbh wbsbwkf

🎮- 3 of their favorite hobbies?

lorne- practicing his swordfighting, pottery (maybe?), and collecting cool seashells + seaglass

ivy- looking for little animals in the wild (projecting my favorite hobby onto her lol), whittling, and reading

🔱- can your oc swim? do they enjoy it?

lorne- he grew up living on a coastline really close to some very nice beaches, so he can definitely swim! he loves it very much and is a strong swimmer.

ivy- she can! it's not her favorite thing to do in water (she'd rather be checking out the plants and animals or tidepooling at the beach), but she'll go swimming sometimes.

🐷- what's their favorite animal?

lorne- lionfish! they exist in my post-apoc setting in a mutated form known as lionsmane fish (linguistic drift). they're a big bigger and can have some odd traits like additional fins (even more stingers..) and wildly increased size compared to the unmutated form.

he got stung by one when he was a teenager from trying to get too close to look at it better once. if anything it made him love them more lmao

ivy- deer and elk. she loves them sooo much bc of how pretty and fast they are. they're also one of her favorite foods :>

bonus, bc i was thinking about it the other day- if they were animals, lorne would be a fox (namesake + he's ginger and kind of clever) and ivy would be a mourning dove (soft and underestimated + her last name is literally macroura)

interpreting this as traits that can be good or bad depending on the situation

lorne- loyal, adventurous, stubborn

ivy- observant, curious, secretive

🍔-is your oc good at cooking and/or baking? which do they prefer?

lorne- he's okayy at it. best at cooking seafood based on where he grew up. honestly he's a better baker than cook but whatever he makes there's like a 30% chance he'll burn it

ivy- she's a better cook than baker. loves cooking. she's real good at prepping/cooking/preserving game meat since she used to tag along with the handful of hunters that lived in the same settlement as her. they'd hunt deer, turkey, etc. (basically whatever standard eastern north american game u can think of..? the region she grew up in is comparable to like. pennsylvania for climate & animal species present).

😥- are they prone to getting stressed out, or is it easier for them to keep their cool?

lorne- he's probably the most chill out of my ocs honestly? he might get worked up about stuff sometimes but can calm down pretty quick. dude just needs to rant to a friend or go do some intense exercise n he'll be chilled out fast.

ivy- she gets stressed easily since she holds herself to really high standards. if she feels like she's doing bad at something you'll know it bc she'll be Very Stressed (visually agitated, fidgety, really quiet but constantly muttering to herself as she tries to sort things out).

decided to start posting about my ocs, so here's a quick rundown of who's who in my fantasy setting

adonis: an ex-noble on the run from his former noble house. when he was little, his original heart was injured irreparably in an accident. his family bought a nonhuman replacement. he was never told what creature the heart came from. he's not sure if he wants to know.

cordelia: a human knight of house rinn. specifically, cordelia is the "sirius" - the knight determined tothe highest potential in the noble house. she is able to see ghosts and speak with spirits of people who died.

fiensal: an elf researcher and mage. he's ivy's dark magic mentor and overall a pretty chill dude. his research revolves around residual magic and how it effects non-magic organisms long-term.

lorne: a knight-errant that had been searching for adventure. he takes pride in his appearance and reputation as an idealistic knight.

ivanna: a half-elf mage specializing in dark magic. when not researching magic, she spends her time exploring old ruins, observing wildlife, and writing entries in her explorer's journal. "ivy" is a nickname that only friends & family use for her.

ydrenth: once human, she used dark magic so much that it twisted her into something else. she wants adonis' heart and she is being Extremely Normal about it

6. how does your oc react to being told someone else’s secret? Do they lock it up tight, or spread it around?

lorne is very good at keeping secrets. if you tell him something that you want to stay between you and him, it'll go to the grave with him.

9. how much shame does your oc feel about themself or their past? do they brush stuff off and feel carefree, or stay up at night recounting mistakes?

adonis feels a lot of shame. his past doesn't keep him up at night, but whenever he's reminded of it by something, he freezes up and starts to overthink things.

he's ashamed of how he was born into/grew up in a corrupt noble house. thanks to his upbringing he's very good at keeping secrets, but he hates it.

12. if your oc had one day of their life where they were being monitored for a full 24 hours, and they knew this, what would they change about their routine?

ivy, a dark mage in a place where practicing dark magic is illegal, would completely change her routine. she wouldn't touch her grimoire and would keep her trefoil tattoo (symbol of dark magic) covered.

she'd probably be anxious the whole day and spend most of it exploring nature/old ruins to get that nervous energy out of her system.

16. (since there's no 18) could your oc be effectively blackmailed with any of their secrets?

ivy would be very easy to blackmail 👀 if you know she's a dark mage and you mention that you might report her to the authorities for it, she'd do just about anything you want in order for her to remain hidden. she'd do even more if you threatened her teacher, fiensal.

lorne, meanwhile... if you threatened him, he might do as you ask. but if you threaten his mentor (an ex-knight of house rinn who was supposed to be executed), he's more likely to just cut you down where you stand.

adonis is hard to blackmail. his past is pretty well-known- it's hard to hide it when you're the runaway son of an infamous noble house. the secrets he still keeps are so well hidden that you can't really blackmail him with anything.

P. what advice would they give to their younger self?

he’d tell himself to be more careful. When lorne was younger, he tended to rush headfirst into things and trusted people that he shouldn’t have. his carelessness cost him an arm and his dream of becoming a knight.

R. how tall are they?

he’s around 6’2” ! a tall guy

S. what’s their relationship like with their parents?

his relationship with his mom is great. he hasn’t been home in months, but he sends her letters whenever he can. his father isn’t in the picture, though. he went missing when lorne was very young. lorne's dream was to travel the world to track him down and bring him home. so far, there's no trace of his father anywhere.

X. what’s their biggest fear?

his biggest fear used to be failure. but when he failed at his greatest aspirations- finding his father and becoming a proper knight- he learned that failure isn’t so bad. he found new dreams and friends along the way that changed his life for the better. now his biggest fear is losing those friends. poor dude :’)

3. is there any weird habits your oc has?

adonis has weird habits inherited from the creature his heart used to belong to! he suppressed those habits when he was still part of his noble house, but once he ran away, he stopped hiding them so much. he makes strange sounds sometimes- growls, huffs, rumbles, etc... he also moves a bit unnaturally. you know how some animals turn their head sharply at any interesting sound? he does that.

lorne has a habit of cracking his joints (knuckles, neck, and back). he also has a habit of keeping himself very clean thanks to his early days as a knight-errant. lorne used to be extremely reckless in combat and almost always had some kind of wound that needed to be kept clean, which led to him forming the habit ^^

8. what’s something that your oc is insecure about? Something that someone could say to them that would really get under their skin?

oohoo. adonis would be insecure if you called him out for being a coward. it's true that he's a coward early on, but he becomes braver over time. you could also bother him by calling him a monster and/or pointing out his inhuman traits (scales, horns, tail). he eventually accepts these traits, though, and becomes proud of them.

by the end of his character arc, the only real way to get under his skin would be to mock the fact that he was born and raised in a corrupt noble house (he's super ashamed of it).

lorne is insecure about the fact that he'll never be a "true" knight. in my setting, the only knights are ones belonging to house rinn. lorne was trained by their enemy, an ex-knight that was supposed to be executed for insubordination but instead ran away. lorne would never be accepted into house rinn unless he betrayed his mentor, which he would never do. his failure to become a knight is something that haunts him even after his character arc resolves. knighthood was his greatest dream. he'll always be a little bothered by having failed at it.

side note- if he had become a knight, he would have been a lot less happy in life and would have been killed only a few years later, but that's a topic for another time 👀

lorne is also insecure about a scar he got across his face while trying to protect adonis. this insecurity fades with time, but if you mocked him while it was still fresh, he'd probably punch you. he's never super proud of it, but does accept it as a representation of his resolve to keep his loved ones safe.

i guess a common theme in my story is learning to accept things as they are and become proud of what you've done? didn't intend for that theme but hmmm. nice.

13. if your oc had one day where they could do anything without being caught, what would they do?

adonis would probably spend the day just doing normal things. he'd explore the markets in a city, have a drink or two at the tavern, etc... he'd just do the mundane things he never had the chance to do while he was part of house vargoba/before he took on a more monstrous appearance.

lorne would spend the day sneaking around one of house rinn's strongholds. he'd watch their training sessions, snoop through their archives, and maybe even steal a shiny new greatsword (a weapon used exclusively by house rinn knights, illegal to make or trade anywhere else) to bring to his mentor? nothing malicious, though.

15. how far would your oc go to keep their secrets secret? How low would they stoop?

OOH. adonis doesn't have any major secrets these days, but hypothetically if he had a very important secret.... he might kill to keep it safe. it depends on who's threatening to spill his secret and what the consequences of killing them would be. he'd rather find a way to resolve the matter peacefully. he's not above blackmailing others, for instance.

lorne would not kill to keep a secret. that said, he would definitely knock someone out if they threatened to spill the secrets of his loved ones (adonis, ivy, and his mentor).

adonis

he's a coward at the start of the story. adonis would rather run away than fight or even simply stick up for himself. this changes, of course, but then his struggle becomes accepting that sometimes, you do have to turn tail and run.

adonis can't quite remember the time before his heart transplant. it's murky to him, like a haze has been cast over his mind. he chalks it up to having poor memory as a little kid and doesn't question it. he should.

adonis has been a character of mine since.... 2019? he was my watcher in pillars of eternity ii for a bit.

lorne

he's had so many different iterations wbsbwjsf... for now i'm sticking with my original idea: he's a knight errant that travels in search of adventure, accompanied by a creature named bramble.

lorne's used to have dreams of tracking down his father, who he and his mother lost contact with years ago, but the search proved fruitless. lorne gave up and became an unofficial knight instead. he trained with a retired knight he met during his travels.

without a noble house to swear allegiance to, lorne is free to wander as he pleases. it comes at the cost of being regarded as a "lesser" knight compared to those from noble houses.

i first made his character in november 2021!

cordelia

she starts out as a knight of house rinn with the title 'sirius,' which is unique to her specific noble house. just as sirius is the brightest star, cordelia is believed to be the knight with the highest potential in house rinn.

she doesn't go on many field missions, instead being kept within the security of house rinn's strongholds. house rinn doesn't know about her ability to see spirits and read souls, but they do know she's weirdly good at discerning if someone is being honest or not. criminals are brought before her for judgement.

cordelia became disillusioned with house rinn years ago, but the only two ways out of house rinn are disgracement or death. neither appeals to her, so she just tries to carry out her duties as normal and ignore everything else.

she's been around as an oc since october 2020! i actually went to renfaire in costume as her that year wbsbwjf
