okdok (how my mam spells okie dokie; need to give her credit) some more bsg thoughts

okie btw i never properly said. i DO rlly love the themes of religion in the show. i have seen glimpses (i go through threads, bc im nosy, despite trying not 2 spoil myself) of ppl rlly rejecting it but sorryyyyy its just... yknow like- i loathe how patronising scifi can be of it sometimes, AND how bad fanbases can get. coming off of trek, well, youknow....

also completely . disavowing it .. is always soo silly 2 me bc... like im not religious myself, even, but i always find it one of the most interesting things to explore within fiction ^_^ esp esp with more scifi stuff, like... thats one of the best places to challenge and to play with it. smile. both with its relationdship between science but also how with its relationship between Humanity and how that might differ for different cultues.... and again its so disappointing the way its hanled so much of the time in many works, and by many Scifi enthusiasts. -_- bc its sooo reductive.

anyways i still sometimes feel like theres something missing from the show and i think thats just me im not sure why. like in terms of like... a certain incompleteness thats not JUST them pacing it out, or leaving things up for interpretation... but i cant uqite put my finger on it. its like i feel like maybe its just bc s1 was SO short for what it was and s2 has been very plot heavy. i think the show would have benefitted a bit more from some more establishing "filler" eps in terms of, like, worldbuilding, yknow? again- i really want to see more of the civillian side of things. i hope we get more of that ^_^ its deffo not like THE WORSTTT problem the show oculd have

BC LIKE OTHERWISE im rllyyyy loving the direction they took EVERYTHING in in season 2. omg. they set it all up so well and OUGHGHGHGG. i love how its testing everything theyve built from s1, wrt the command. absolutely crazy moves...

i was absolutely ITCHING for a presence like admiral cain and she delivered. part of me wishes it went a bit longer? just a bit. i dont think it was like... RUSHED... partially bc i do agree her takeover would have just been immediate, like it was, and i dont know what her role really could have been after they called off the assassinations. but idk- i wish we got to see a bit more of her, i guess! maybe even just an ep or so.

nonetheless she was still a really good contrast. her and the pegasus and how its run, versus galactica. and i do think.... i think i tlked before abt how sometimes i was unsatisfied with how, like, bsg kind of handled its own politics sometimes? like- specifically the roslin and zarek. i think thats moreso an issue with the latter, and again how... kind of lacking i find him, for what could be a really good and interesting opportunity to challenge roslin, who does have issues, unchecked, rather than just be kind of a minor antagonist ... & THATS EVEN MOREE the case with his presence back on kobol. like he was literally there just to cause conflict and idk like its FUNCTIONAL but its also like comeee on you can be more interesting with him! come on!

BUT here i do think with both cain and tigh's brief stint in command they did well to rlly explore it a bit more so im forgiving it. its not like that fixes that mess but this stuff was good enough for me to be like 👍uh huh, yaknow? b c it was soo good and argh im- SPEAKING OF, i am glad they did "remember" incidents like the gideon massacre, even after adama came back. again i do wanna see MORE of the civillians- but i think we're going to getthat soon, i hope? i feel it more in the air, with the introduction of that new number 6 and the cylon apologists which im rlly excited for... both bc theyre things i rlly wanted to see more from the show ^_^

anyway i feel like noneof this is that mad i just wanted to ramble in bc i haventttt properly eek and squeak i feel like i acc dont have much to say ^_6 despite rlly enjoying myself and the show LOL

Hm. The main thing that comes to mind that isn't something Specific (or like a kink/smut thing which...I don't read a lot of smut fics anyway?) would probably be amnesia plotlines [she says, fully aware that that's a key part of one of her own original verses].

I guess it's not so much the idea of amnesia in and of itself, and more the way it tends to be used in fics, especially in a shipping context, it gets weird and uncomfortable and while I'm generally super into H/C tropes, something about the way amnesia storylines tend to play out just. Does Not Do It For Me.

Oh, omegaverse, I guess. Have never really understood the appeal of that.

Not a fandom trope, exactly, but the obligatory arc in team-based properties where everyone's fighting each other? Hate that. No thank you. Most of fandom also tends to hate those arcs though, lol, so it's mostly a thing I have to deal with in canon.

I'm also generally not into soulmate AUs, unless it's something baked into the structure of the fandom from the beginning (i.e., lifebonds in Valdemar) but there are exceptions to that (sometimes SW, particularly BSG).

X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.

Lately I seem to be invested in surrogate parent/child dynamics a lot? Or actual parent/child dynamics but involving adoption or otherwise connecting later in life rather than Raised From Birth.

Also, most whump/H/C tropes, though I tend to be picky about who gets hurt.

I tend to get invested in characters with Complicated Loyalties and/or Alignments, as well.

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?

Several people I follow seem to be very invested in some very aesthetically pleasing C-dramas/Chinese dramas, so I tend to reblog those even though I have No Idea what's going on.

OFMD and WWDITS pop up on my dash a lot--I'm not interested in watching them for genre reasons, but I enjoy the enthusiasm of the people on my dash for them.

Also Batfam/DC comics stuff.

Those are the big ones, I think? Especially in terms of things I probably won't ever get into directly.

Uh, okay, a blitz through some of the things that have floated through my head lately:

I've been thinking a lot about Zarek lately, actually, for a variety of reasons (including a backstory/character profile fic that I swear will materialize someday). Watch him also take on a bigger role than I planned in The Other Battlestar, lol.

Also thinking about adaptations, and what makes a good one vs. a bad one; both because the Les Mis brainrot is still strong (I still need to do my rewatch of the 2012 movie, maybe this weekend), and in talking about the WoT TV series with my dad (he doesn't like it, thinks it takes things too far away from the source material; I agree that it's doing some Very different things to the point where it's borderline a different story at this point But the touchstones I like are still strong enough for me, even with the Heavy nostalgia goggles)

Crossovers! Crossovers are a lot of fun; there are still a handful of BSG/SW crossovers I want to write someday, plus the BSG1 crossover AU outline I started...like...two years ago, lol...

Always sort of in the background thinking about redemption arcs/morally grey characters and/or storylines (see above re: complicated loyalties and alignments being a Thing for me, lol). I haven't written anything on the subject in a while, but sometimes go back and reread old essays.

...there's more, I'm sure, but that's what's popping into my head as having been fairly Present lately XD

his heart was pounding in his chest– zarek had never done something like this before ( but he also had never had such a serious relationship before either ) so the nerves were kicking in, but there was more excitement than anything. he had no schedules planned for a good two weeks, so on a whim he decided to fly out to see his boyfriend since they hadn’t seen each other in a while and it was killing him– he hadn’t told his boyfriend any of his plans and wanted to surprise him. he knew that rimmy would be at an event around the time he would land, making it the perfect opportunity for him to slip in at any given time, and rimmy definitely wouldn’t be expecting it, since it wasn’t like zarek to do this sort of thing, especially in public given that he still hadn’t come out yet. he was working on that, though it was getting more obvious to his fans, and they were suspicious that he was dating someone. once at the venue, it doesn’t take him long to find the other, he’d recognize his loud voice anywhere. standing a good distance away, zarek can’t wipe the smile off his face as he watches him in awe– that was his boyfriend, how lucky was he? when things settle down a bit, the singer makes his move towards rimmy, approaching from behind. “ excuse me, can i get a photo with you, i’m a big fan. ”

               events like these were some of the best times to see jae rim in his prime. it wasn’t run by a company that he’s personally involved with, there was no need for him to act a particular way or stay completely sober so he could speak on stage. so, he was having fun. the only thing that could make this night better would be his boyfriend simultaneously appearing right next to him... given his residence in a whole other country, he settled on just sending the other a text with a few too many heart emojis. at this point in the night, the boy has had several glasses of champagne, and he’s feeling blissful. or maybe not quite blissful, because it’s doubtful that many blissful souls talk as loudly as he is right now. rimmy’s telling a story to several people, most of whom are strangers, and his loud voice seems to attract more as the overdramatic story goes on. afterward, everyone disperses and he ends up just watching the action of the event from the sidelines. he’d recognize the voice behind him anywhere, especially when his favorite pick-me-up was watching videos of that voice. without thinking, he turns to face his boyfriend and places his lips against his. arms find their way around his waist, pulling zarek close as he reluctantly ends the kiss.   ❝ your boyfriend know you’re here? ❞

🤖- How do they treat/view droids? Are there any significant droids in their life? (if accepting ofc >:II)

Her breath hitches. One nearly imperceptible movement of her hand inches a finger toward the sabre attached to her belt. Buried deep within her cowl, her teeth are bared in an uncommon snarl of distaste and…anger. She is watching as the small ~shorter than herself~ brown robed creatures push along a restrained line of slaves. If one falters for any reason, it gets electrocuted with a push of a button. She hears one of the slaves murmur a plea to the Maker to spare them. The voice is so familiar. Evokes memories recently made on Coruscant, and the stories that Anakin has never quite told her in their full and morbidly tragic entirety. But before she can do anything but remove her cloak’s hood to keep herself busy, her Master’s hand comes down on her bare shoulder, holding her in place with its iron grip. Shakes his head almost dispassionately as she looks up and feels his dark gaze like liquid night pour over her. It does little, strangely, to quell the fire of rebellion burning bright inside of her and for just that split second, she considers acting anyway, despite his silent warnings otherwise.

In accordance with the Rights of Sentience clause of the Galactic Constitution, there was an outcry against speciesism, and set out rights that all members of the Republic were entitled to. Among them was the formal outlawing of slavery. A declaration that all sentient lifeforms were equal and should be treated as such. That all Republic citizens were entitled to all rights enshrined in the Constitution, including suffrage, protection from undue hardships, and access to certain recourse in the face of tyranny, especially in the galaxy’s outlying areas. And as Jedi, were they not bound to uphold those rights and rules? Was that not part of their preview as guardians of peace and justice? How then, could acting on the side of the oppressed be wrong? She doesn’t understand this. Why her Master does not feel the same rage and sense of violation at what is happening before their very eyes!

One of the slaves tears Melakeni’s gaze away from Zarek’s when it begs not to be deactivated. The droid’s tone is mournful, tight. It…she…is afraid. Deactivation is synonymous to ….her… with death. Keni sees two other droids try to comfort one another, hands made of metal rather than flesh, clutched even if they keep marching. This tells her they are devoted to one another, and would, in similar circumstances, she and Anakin not do the same? Devotion is a concept that implies choice. A duty or responsibility to a task or a person. And that in itself implies some smattering of free will. Thus, droids are capable of understanding their own mortality and experiencing emotions, to a far greater extant than most Jedi she knows. They possess the beginnings of theism. They speak not only for themselves but others.

It isn’t solely his long discussions about these things that influences Keni, though Anakin was really the first to bring her to the matter. In conversation, sight unseen, it would be difficult to distinguish C-3PO from a ‘normal’ humanoid. He is both self-aware and conscious. Perhaps not humanoids but still something greater than the sum of their circuitry. They are conscious. Sentient. They are a people. And as such, deserve the same rights as others.

Her mass of nastic veins and arteries ~which Ani swears is her heart~ constricts and she swears there’s a keening sound as she looks away from the slaves and back to her Master, towering over her in the market square. She cannot keep her face blank, letting it reflect the flood of feelings coursing through her from this injustice. His hand slips off her shoulder and rises to her chin. Calloused fingers close around her jaw, thumb pressing in at the point of her chin until she blinks and the muscles beneath her skin give. He isn’t looking at her any more. Instead there’s the briefest flicker to indicate the far side of the stalls. “There is our prey. We have our duty.” Her Master has spoken. She can only obey.

Melakeni absolutely despises slavery, in any shape or form, and particularly of those whom she considers the most vulnerable; primitive cultures, children, Clone Troopers, and droids. She is careful to treat all beings with the same courtesy unless they’ve proven to her impossible to understand standards that they do not deserve that level of respect. As a Consular Jedi, particularly a healer, she often works with a number of medical droids, many of whom she finds delightful and considers acquaintances. She can’t say that she is particularly attached to any one more than the others. She doesn’t have the luxury to often take the time to get to know each one on any deep level, but she does, for reasons, have an inordinate fondness to Artoo.
