where: decker ranch who: @nathaniel-donovan
Working hours at Decker Ranch weren't very regular for Sammy, only playing doctor to the Hellraisers when he was called in. After all, his services were reserved for only more serious matters -- gunshot wounds, deep cuts, stitches-- anything that would warrant a member wanting to avoid going to the hospital. After all, the security staff at the hospital tended to be on high alert whenever they saw that patch come through the doors, so the less eyes there were the better. That particular night he'd been quiet about his presence at the ranch, not wanting to alert anyone to the fact that he was around and all of a sudden have a free clinic on his hands, wanting to do some inventory and make sure he was stocked up for the time being However, that wishful thinking for some peace and quiet went out the door when heard footsteps behind him.
"If it's not life threatening then I'm not interested." Sammy called over his shoulder as he scribbled something down on his clipboard, not bothering to even see who was there. "And even then, the answer is still no."

lol okay now i actually have to defend these but here we go. also when i say strong opinions, some of these are more like, moderate and easily influenced opinions, but anyway
here’s a handful off the top of my head:
- i haven’t listened to marti pellow’s other work and i have no doubt he must be good at what he does, but he sounds utterly awful in every recording of the new gen that ive heard
- the bridge that comes in at the end of the show looked better when it ran across the stage rather than into the audience because the people in the first few rows now have to crane their necks or just watch the screen to see during brave new world
- the voices in the background of spirit of man (the echoes when nathaniel’s singing late in the song ‘they wouldn’t listen/i cannot save the world/and now it’s too late’, etc) and the pre-recorded ‘look look look look’ and ‘just just just just’ in brave new world annoy me to no end
- on that note, a handful of sub-opinions related to the artilleryman: a) nobody since david essex has sounded decent in act 1, like they all sound really chipper and just sort of mildly inconvenienced and a bit surprised when they relate to the narrator how their entire regiment was obliterated, b) the bottle of whiskey line is horrible, why is that even there, just to foreshadow the artilleryman’s alcoholism?? c) i actually do REALLY like that they added more book lines into his dialogue near the end when he starts making predictions about the future of humanity because that forms the better part of his role in the novel, d) encroaching into brave new world with ‘life begins again’ doesn’t fit and should be reserved for the end, although is it meant to serve as the narrator’s impetus to leave or something? i can’t tell, and e) the little military march that the artilleryman does drives me mental, it looks ridiculous, like if you’re going to do that at LEAST keep the beautiful horn section in from the og album instead of the clock noises
- the neeson hologram is better than the floating head (and the moment when nathaniel runs toward the screen and is ‘punched’ looks awesome) but i really want to see what it would be like to have a combo of pre-recorded narration on screen, and an actor interacting with the characters. i feel like it would make the interactions feel more organic and less rushed
- the stage show desperately needs to start casting actors of colour
- the new gen sounds much better in general when you’re watching the stage recording as opposed to listening to the album
- also for some reason, newton faulkner as the sung thoughts of the journalist during eve of the war sounds identical sometimes to autotuned gary barlow??
- the way adam garcia starts gripping his head and the way he delivers the final ‘all over again’ in this pained way is the best
- obviously this is pretty pointless to talk about atm but the show should have been touring internationally years ago, it’s got fans everywhere, and i wonder if the decision not to has something to do with jeff insisting on conducting every single show
- the way the stage catches on fire during artilleryman and the fighting machine makes me lose it, i go feral for that
- pretty much all the animation looks tacky and outdated but there is some definite charm and it’s part of the experience at this point
- david essex sounded rly bad as the voice of humanity (rip)
- nathan james however is a legend and the little air punches he does in time with the beat in thunderchild is my favourite thing ever (and the dramatic coat swishes)
- the whoosh noises and the beat added to both thunderchild and the artilleryman and the fighting machine slaps
- it looks like jason donovan is never going to leave his role at this stage and i kinda dont want him to
- most of this has been stage show related so album opinion: jeff’s use of recurring musical motifs and dark reprises is part of what makes the music as brilliant as it is and is so cleverly incorporated
- i rly like that theyve altered beth’s character from basically taking a step back and begging nathaniel to listen to her, to being more of a forceful presence, as it becomes clear nathaniel basically won’t listen to her otherwise. there’s also a change now in the way she sings the final (?) chorus of ‘there must be something worth living/trying/dying for’ which sounds amazing
- movie when
my hobbies include forming very strong opinions on unimportant aspects of jeff wayne's musical version of the war of the worlds

The Ebony Series
Unpublished: The Ebony Series
"We all learn to do what we must, in order to survive," Nathaniel said. Hara asked, "What about when what we have to do becomes worse than not surviving?" The answer: "By that time, we're usually too close to Hell to tell the difference."
Disclaimer: The Ebony Series is not yet published. I do not know when or even if it will be published. You are welcome to ask questions about it, about what you see here, but I would greatly appreciate it if you would avoid harassing me to publish. Many of you have made it clear that you want it, but these books, and their author, are not yet ready for print.
That being said, the characters from the Ebony Series are some of the most pushy characters in my head, and they don't like being hidden from view. So... here's a little bit for you.
What is the Ebony Series?
Many years ago, in seventh or eighth grade, I wrote a book called Hunter, Hunted. It was never published (will never be published, since I cannibalized the only good parts for other, better works), but it introduced me to Katama's line. It also led into the writing of Predator, Prey, which would later be published under the title Midnight Predator.
Between the first draft of Predator, and the decision to publish it, I started another book... originally an exploration of the history of Midnight, which also experimented with some of my new shapeshifter breeds (serpiente, avians), with whom I hadn't worked much as of then. The first book of the series, Ebony, was finished in the summer of 1999.
Some days, I wonder if I ever should have allowed these characters out of my head.
The Ebony Series focuses on the rise and fall of this empire, specifically, on a single pivotal moment: midnight on the fall equinox, September 22, 1804; the hour when Midnight fell. Just as there are certain dates that are familiar to every American schoolchild- 1492, 1776- so is this moment in Nyeusigrube's history.
The series occurs during what was in my world an incredibly complex period of time. Just as every culture within Nyeusigrube was touched by Midnight, so they were touched by its fall, and so they are explored in the series. And just as, in real life, it is rare for any one person to know everything, so every narrator, every character, has blind spots. People lie, or misunderstand, or simply do not know.
The Books
The titles within the Ebony Series include: Ebony, Aureate, Indigo, Gray, Jade, Midnight, [Ivory, Amber, Crimson, Obsidian]. The three titles within brackets are still in flux, and may become full books, or may be rolled into the others; the first six titles, however, are definitely canon. These "summaries" will be very brief, including nothing more than a) protagonist, b) how the protagonist got mixed up with Midnight, and c) the major cultures and histories explored within the book. Keep in mind the following when reading: Shapeshifters and witches are born freeblood. They cannot be claimed as slaves unless sold by their own kind.
Ebony
The first book in the series is narrated by two protagonists: Hara Kiesha Cobriana, Arami, and Aislinn, a second-generation slave bred in Midnight. It covers exactly one half-year in its timeline, spanning from summer to winter solstice, 1804. The primary focus of this book is within Midnight's core, and the days immediately surrounding the fall of the empire, as well as the influence of Midnight upon the serpiente.
Aureate
Narrated by Alasdair Shardae, heir to the Tuuli Thea, and Ashley, an avian slave belonging to Gabriel Donovan (Ashley and Gabriel are first introduced in Ebony). Aureate spans from seven or ten (depending on draft) years prior to seven or ten years after the fall of Midnight, and deals extensively with the avians, the repercussions of the fall of Midnight on both the avians and the serpiente, and the history of the trainer, Gabriel Donovan.
Indigo
Indigo has three narrators. The first, Charis, is a mongrel falcon-crow who is favored by Alain, the son of the heir to the Empress, who teaches her how to master her Indigo-level magic; Charis is sold to Midnight by the Empress on charges of treason. The second narrator, Leonlashe, is a Pure Diamond falcon bonded to Alain, a mongrel falcon-cougar who has successfully hidden her mixed blood from the Empress for the entire of her life; after Alain petitions extensively for the Empress's pardon for Charis, Leonlashe is sent to Midnight to assess its power. The final narrator is Keyika, a pt'vem (half-peregrine, half-merlin) ka'jaes (without magic) falcon who is picked up by the Mercy on charges of treason, after having spent the last several years as one of Charis's followers. Indigo spans a very short but complex timeframe, covering only a few weeks on each side of Midnight's collapse. However, for the first time, it begins to introduce the infamous "thirteen archers," the fighters, assassins and mercenaries who banded together to destroy the empire. Indigo also marks a shift from books focusing on Gabriel, to a focus on Jaguar de Fiaro.
Gray
Gray is narrated by the two sakkri of the Shantel, the powerful, nameless spirit-witches who are the highest powers among one of the few shapeshifter realms never to fall to Midnight. At this point, I'm not sure how much of a timeframe Gray covers. It's possible it may eventually include the storylines currently in Amber and Ivory, which is why those aren't yet certain.
Jade
Jade is narrated by Jaguar de Fiaro, Jeshickah's favorite trainer for many years, a half-Azteka who was sold to Midnight by his father. He was a major character in Midnight Predator. Jade spans from 1622, when Jaguar was three years old, through the fall of Midnight, and into modern day past the end of Midnight Predator. Jade, obviously, deals mostly with the trainer himself, and the founding of the new Midnight, but it also deals with Xeke's line, some follow-up with characters from Gray and Indigo, and the Azteka.
Midnight
Midnight is the final book in the Ebony series. Stretching from the early twelfth century, when the twin girls Jeshickah and Katama were born, through the days following the end of Midnight Predator and Jade, Midnight deals with the life, death and rebirth of Jeshickah and her empire, beginning to end.
Other Possibles
If they become books... Ivory is the story of Nathaniel Stevens, mercenary, and freeblood fledgling of Jeshickah... Amber tells of Taro's and Varick's histories... Crimson focuses on Gabriel Donovan... and Obsidian deals with the Obsidian guild (the white vipers, of the serpiente), who play quite a role in this entire story.
Note: The Ebony Series is not intended for a young-adult audience. However, I make an effort to keep the clips on this site suitable for the youngest of my readers (I'm well aware that many of you read adult books all the time, however, my priority on tDoS is for the site to remain accessible to the same audience that reads my published work), so in case you're a little squeamish, you'll be as safe clicking links from this page as you would be picking up Forests or Falcondance.

▼ SOMETHING WICKED
Vanessa Griffith was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, along with her younger brother Nathaniel Griffith. Her mother is the one with the werewolf gene, passing it along to her children, including Vanessa. As a child, she had no idea that she was a werewolf as her mother wanted to raise her children as normal as possible. Vanessa’s parents never really had a happy marriage, yet her mother stays with her father because she’s afraid to end up alone and she won’t have anywhere to go. Vanessa’s dad happens to be an alcoholic and has been abusive towards her little brother ever since the boy was ten years old and Vanessa was twelve. She was too afraid to interfere because she knew that her father would turn their aggression on her. With much pain in her heart, she had to watch as her dad beat her younger sibling on a frequent basis. High school was different though - that was a place where Vanessa felt like she could defend Nate, unlike at home. Usually, she would stand up for him whenever he was bullied there, but that was something that only made people bully Nate more because she was fighting his battles for him. During her time in high school, Vanessa was a loner and surrounded herself with a select few, not caring for popularity. College had never been for her though and Vanessa had set out to get a job after she was done with high school. At age eighteen, she moved to Mystic Falls and started working at Mystic Grill as a waitress, something that she had done for about five years. It wasn’t until she was twenty three that Vanessa wanted something else, applying for a bartending job at Mystic Coyote. She’s been working there for a year now and after Vanessa turned twenty four, she met a guy at a Halloween party and took him back to her apartment. It was supposed to just be a hook up since Vanessa wasn’t interested in a relationship at the time. Ever since she was a young teen, Vanessa had been sexually active with a variety of guys, so she had been with her fair share of both good and bad males. At some point, the guy Vanessa was with became aggressive and violent towards her, but she didn’t know that he had taken drugs as well as alcohol. She tried to get him to stop and started screaming, attempting to get away. It was then that her brother Nate arrived after having gone trick or treating with a group of children. He soon kicked the front door down, knowing that something was off. After Nathaniel made his way into the living room, he could see a guy he’d never met trying to choke Vanessa. Seeing that his sister was in danger enraged him to no end and Nathaniel didn’t even know his own strength when he pulled the guy off of Vanessa, shoving him onto the floor and pinning him down. He started beating on the guy and saw red in that very moment, the image of his sister not being able to breathe not leaving his mind. Vanessa pleaded her brother to stop with tears in her eyes, but he didn’t hear her and continued to beat on the male.
She was afraid her little brother would end up killing the guy and unlike Nathaniel, Vanessa had known about the werewolf gene for a long time, ever since she was fourteen, but her mother had asked her not to say anything - not even to her father. The woman had managed to remain untriggered her entire life, so she didn’t want anyone to know. When Nate finally stopped beating on the man that had hurt his sister, he had stopped breathing and it shocked the young boy. After her sibling’s first kill, Vanessa told Nate about the werewolf gene and explained everything. She felt like he needed to know because this had been kept a secret from him for a long time. Nate didn’t understand. He was upset and angry with his mother and also his sister. No one had ever said anything and so he told the two women that he didn’t want to see them again. Vanessa had never wanted this for her family and she does feel grateful that Nathaniel saved her life on Halloween. However, what she didn’t know was that Nate had gone to their parents’ home on her mom’s birthday, with their father beating on their mother. He beat on their dad so he would stop hurting their mom and managed to stop himself, unlike during Halloween. During Thanksgiving however, Vanessa’s dad had grasped a knife from the kitchen while his wife was cooking dinner for the family. He was drunk on that day, of course, but he still remembered that his son had beaten him to a bloody pulp weeks before. As Nate was heading home after enjoying some food and good company friends and family, his father suddenly started stabbing at his youngest child. He was so angry with Nathaniel for what he had done and wanted to settle the score, or even worse. Nate tried to get away, but he was being stabbed and began to bleed to the point where he dropped to the ground in front of his home. His father killed him that night and fled the scene right after he noticed that his son had stopped breathing. After her sibling showed up at his parental home, Vanessa’s father was shocked to see his son alive and he demanded an explanation from his wife. She was forced to tell him everything, but him knowing about werewolves and hybrids only made his resentment towards Nathan worse. And not just towards Nate, but also towards his wife and daughter. He wanted to live a normal, human life and wanted nothing to do with anything supernatural. Unlike her younger sibling, Vanessa is looking for love and approval from her father. Her entire life, she just wanted to make him proud, regardless of her species. She’s still untriggered and wants the man in her life, trying to prove to him that she doesn’t pose a threat in any way. Vanessa is trying her hardest not to trigger her curse and every single day, she hopes that her father will change his mind and his lifestyle so that he can play an active role in her life. Another reason Vanessa is trying her hardest not to trigger her curse is because she’s desperately hoping that she won’t turn into an aggressive alcoholic like her father since it seems to run in his side of the family.
▼ TANGLED WEBS
Nathaniel Griffith
Because of what happened at her apartment during Halloween, Vanessa feels responsible for her little brother triggering his curse. Even though Nathaniel’s a lot stronger than her now, she’s become more protective over him because of what happened that night. She wants to make it up to him somehow, knowing part of him is still mad at her for not telling him about the werewolf gene. She just wants Nate to be happy and not turn into their father.
Hayley Marshall
Vanessa and Hayley were never that close, but both of them care for Nathaniel a lot, which is the one thing that they have in common. Now that Hayley is in town, maybe the two can work on establishing a closer relationship. Maybe Hayley can help Vanessa remain untriggered since triggering her curse is the one thing she fears the most.
Matthew Donovan
Vanessa saved Matt’s life at the cafe after a group of vampires invaded the building. He feels grateful that she did what she did and somehow, the two took the vampires down together, making sure the injured customers made it to the hospital safely. This event brought Matt and Vanessa closer together and he feels like she’s becoming a very close friend.
Gabriella Teague
Vanessa works for Gabriella and she loves her job very much. Gabby doesn’t know that Vanessa is a werewolf, but Vanessa wants to keep an eye on her boss, knowing she’s human. Vanessa often offers to walk Gabriella home, but that makes her feel suspicious of her employee. What are the girl’s true intentions? Why is she so set on walking her home all the time?
Felicity O’Shea
Vanessa was actually friends with Felicity’s half sister, but she has no idea that Felicity is related to the girl. She runs into her sometimes when she visits the clothing store where Felicity works, but other than that, the girls aren’t really familiar with one another. Though if Felicity finds out about her half sibling, she might want to know if Vanessa knows how the girl died and what she was like.

Text
Sammy felt his throat practically go dry at the other male's comment, fighting the urge to answer with the brute honesty that tugged at his chest right then and, instead, forcing an unamused eyeroll. "Don't sound so desperate, Donovan. If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were just looking for an excuse." Heavy sarcasm laced his tone -- and still, he couldn't help the way his eyes flickered towards Nate's lips for a brief moment, immediately catching himself and turning away so he could wash his hands. God, the universe was definitely playing some sort of cruel joke on him, having him pine endlessly for a straight man -- it was pathetic. Still, Sammy was nothing if not endlessly realistic (or pessimistic), so he knew there wasn't a chance in hell anything would happen between them other than some baseless flirting. Just -- why did Nate have to be so good at it? "Figures," The doctor mumbled, glad that Nate at least put something on the wound rather than keeping it exposed to the elements. "I'm 'hiding out' because, in case you haven't noticed, the vast majority of your brothers-in-arms are little pains in the ass -- and that's coming from someone who works with children all day." Once the male was sat, Sammy gently took his forearm and unwrapped the bandages, squinting slightly as he inspected the would closely. "Now, how the hell did you manage to cut your arm this badly? Do I need to start rolling my eyes now, or save it for something better?"
"What - didn't do it for you? Should I get down on my knees next time?" Nate's smile widened as he failed to keep his chuckle to himself, apparently finding himself funny. "Wikihow, actually." he tossed back practically instantly as he took a glance towards the dressing on his arm, despite his tone resembling one of seriousness Nate was being anything but. Either way, considering his wound had come from moving broken tiles he didn't necessarily have room to try and be smart. With that greenlight to go and sit down he does so, "No? That why you're hiding out? Secret's safe with me, doc." he shrugged casually, not having any intentions of shouting to the world that the doctor was in house anyway.
