If the past Ryouga could see himself today, he would've laughed out loud in disbelief - or maybe he'd have been furious. Even now he finds it hard to believe what he's doing- seeking out the person he called his enemy for so long, who he hated to the rotten depths of his heart... and for what? A heart-to-heart?

It's not like he was prepared for it at all - not with the way he is now, uncertain and wavering, raw and desperate for a way out in a way he's never experienced before. But right now, Ryouga is even more thrown than he expected. Because the person standing before Ryouga isn't IV... but III.

Ryouga has never known what to make of him. He'd always been so focused on his older brother that III himself had escaped his attention. He gives off the kind of aura of a harmless kid, easy to dismiss out of hand, and yet... that's nothing more than a carefully crafted deception. Or maybe it's not crafted at all? The idea that his gentle demeanor really is genuine, but that it doesn't make him any less dangerous... it's quite the scary thought, really.

How would III react if he found out what Ryouga really is? It's been a mere day or so since Ryouga found out himself, even if he'd been suspecting it for longer than that. But the Barians, after all, are the enemy of III's family, the one's who'd used them and caused him so much pain - a pain that Ryouga is bitterly familiar with in a way that now feels all too horribly ironic. He doesn't know what to do. What is he supposed to say? Why is Ryouga- no, Nasch, leader and Emperor of the Barians, frozen in place here like nothing more than a child?

"...I wasn't expecting you here." He recovers quickly, his usual scowl settling over his features once again - but on the inside, he feels sick. "I guess IV's hiding away, then? ...What a coward, as always."

E-Don’t really like it.

I feel like 96 was an interesting character whose potential was kind of wasted in the show, and that tends to sour my perception of anything involving him. I did write these two as sort of the evil counterparts to Yuma and Astral once, though, and it was a lot of fun.

C-Not a bad ship

I used to not like IV very much, so had no real interest in shipping him with anyone. But thanks to my slow-going rewatch I find I like him more and his interactions with Shark are kind of weirdly funny to me. I find them amusing in an overdramatic, crack fic kind of way. If that makes sense?

Astral/96

E-Don’t really like it

More or less for the same reasons as Vector/96. I sort of wish 96 had actually BEEN Don Thousand instead of just a part of him. Would have allowed him to be more interesting, more connected to the plot of the show, and would have made his connections with a lot of other characters more significant.

Congratulations on being reinstated as Japan’s representative! For Echizen-senshu, what was the experience of fighting as an American representative like?

What was it like…? Normal. As long as I can play tennis, the country is irrelevant.

Did you have a strong desire to play on the same team as Ryouga-senshu?

No, I wanted to play against him. But in the end, he was being evasive and escaped.

Where there any impressions you had looking at the Japanese team from the outside?

They’ve changed a bit, somehow. Fuji-senpai, Atobe-san, that person called “the child of god”. And… Akutsu-san too. Not bad, everyone.

Is that the reason you returned to Japan’s team?

Not really. It’s just that when I thought about who were the people that made me strong… If you’re fighting together with someone, I guess I’d do it here.

Sometimes, a samurai-like aura can be felt around Echizen-senshu.

Hmm… I don’t know since I can’t tell myself. When I was fighting the French prince, I guess it was said that he was a knight and I was a samurai. He was a troublesome guy, but the match with him was fun. Well, I’ll win next time too. The horseback match was a tie, but next time I’ll win that one too.

I want to say Vector is both at once simply cause he just, almost never sleeps (insomnia’s a bitch). Also b/c it annoys Ryouga.

Vector is a cover thief and keeps stealing them. Ryouga has to cuddle him just to keep some covers for himself by holding him in place. Or to at least keep him from stealing all the covers for himself.

Oh Vector hands down. All the memories of his past, of what Don Thousand did to him/them, what could have happened. At least when he sleeps anyways.

hoooo boy where do i begin

so, i’ve always believed that at some point between the duel with dr. faker and episode 75 (with the biker gang)  kaito and ryouga have a nice, long conversation about their past - kaito actually apologizes for taking ryouga’s soul, ryouga actually forgives him (they each promise to take this conversation to their graves because NOBODY can find out they’re s o f t ) and they talk about family (or, y’know, lacktherof) and from then on they’re able to be civil with one another

it explains how in the fuck they were able to work together in 75 and not fight once during that whole ordeal - plus, their dynamic changes (at least, from my perspective) past this point, they do more playful teasing than actually arguing, and to me that’s quite a change from how they interacted before

look, i know i grew up on dm as a kid but it’s of no interest to me nowadays, and besides, i only really know of the rod/eye/ring but don’t really understand enough about them to answer even if i wanted to

i’m also fond of gary mack (ryouga’s dub, of course) and the dude that does mizael/vector (billy bob thompson, i think?) he also voices reiji in the dub and honestly i love hearing mizael every time reiji speaks (i don’t like reiji, but his voice makes the dub bearable at least)

hell, even kaito’s dub is decent...a little breathy but still not bad considering how bad dubs usually are

oh, and unpopular opinion...eli jay, because despite how much everyone loves to bitch and moan and whine about how terrible yuma’s dub voice is, i find it very, very endearing and fitting, and i wouldn’t want him to sound any different

Ryouga greets IV with a curt, unimpressed voice, and lips curled into an irritated glower. In other words - everything is just the same as one would expect... or at least, it should be.

But in reality - things couldn't be further from that truth. Because Ryouga knows something that IV doesn't... that no human knows, in fact. And that's Ryouga's true identity as the Barian Emperor Nasch; the enemy to Yuma and Astral and the Astral world along with them.

He hasn't told anyone. Soon, the war will begin, and Ryouga knows by then it'll be too late to play pretend any longer. But for now... he's made the decision to act human for a while more - all in the name of collecting information and forming a plan that'll defeat Yuma for good. Of course, that means he'll have to pretend around IV, too - that nothing's changed, that they're still on the same side together against the Barians...

Does it hurt, to take the place of a traitor? To turn his back on the people he cares about so much? ...More than anything. But he can't let it stop him - so he'll drown out that pain with another, worse pain, and keep moving forwards. Luckily... he doesn't have to act all too differently around IV compared to the others - after all, they never really got along.
