Gilded Age: Is Raikes A Rake?

Thomas Raikes’ character has, in my opinion, just come under great suspicion in the Gilded Age. Up until this point I’ve been assuming he was a sympathetic  character. He waves his fee, drives Marian to the train station, and helps Miss Scott. He is determined in his pursuit of Marian, but in a society where dating does not exist, popping the question so soon wasn’t necessarily a sign of his being untrue. A romantic more in love with Marian as an idea than a person perhaps, but not a cad. He does ask her to meet him without her aunt’s knowledge, but given that he has no other means of furthering their acquaintance, that necessarily doesn’t make him a bad guy.  His behavior in 1x05 calls all that into question.

Raikes was trying to compromise Marian. It would have been one thing if they’d been on a stroll is the daylight and he stole a quick kiss. This was different. This was right outside her room, after he indicated he wanted to go in. It stinks of premeditation. I am convinced if Ms. Scott didn’t show up he would have pulled her into the room and attempted to have sex with her. That is beyond the pale. In that rules that govern their society Marian would have to have marry him or face ruin of herself and the Van Rynes. If Raikes has his sights set higher in society than Marian, he could have easily used the incident to blackmail the Van Rynes into sponsoring him.    

Looking back, the signs were there about Raikes, starting with the fact they literally named him “Raikes” as in a “Rake”  AKA seducer of women. He was privy to Marian’s father’s business affairs, and therefore knew she was connected to NY high society. He asks to write to her, and then tacks on the “estate business excuse.” His earlier “kindness” gets him into the house. He says himself he is someone who sees what he wants and takes it. He manages to get himself invited to the opera, not an easy feat for someone of his social level. That suggests he is a skilled manipulator. Not to mention that fact he is courting her on the heels of her father’s death when she is most vulnerable.

I am quite certain we as an audience are about to get blindsided, because of our first exposure to Mr. Raikes. Like Marian we see him performing acts of kindness and assume that makes him a kind person. We see Aunt Agnes is incredible snobby and we are outraged she assumes the worst of him. I think vindication will be hers in the end.
