She36 invites you to a social CAKE RIDE for women, trans, femme, and non-binary cyclists! Fixed gear, single speed, unicycles, tandems and road bikes welcome. We will start at Köpenicker Straße 4, 10997 Kreuzberg and cycle 12km south to Marienpark near Lankwitz. We will stuff our faces with cake in Marienpark, so please feel free to bake a cake and bring it with you to share! Some of us will also bring a thermos of coffee, so bring a mug! Cake Ride Recipe

Cyclists seem to love their carbs. If it’s not pizza, then it’s doughnuts, beer or cake. True to all those food groups, SHE36 organises an annual social cake ride. It’s the only ride where people who can’t attend ask us when the next cake ride is, because they’d love to join. That amused me, because you can always ride with friends and stuff your face with cake! There is even a whole subsection of Strava devoted to Holly’s Kuchenparadies, where there is a flat rate for all the cake you can eat. Due to popular demand, here is a step-by-step guide to inspire you to organise and share your own cake rides.

Ingredients

1 x date and time

1 x meeting place

n+1 amount of cakes

Instructions: Preparation

Start a chat with your fellow fixed gear girl gang members about which date everyone actually has time to go on a cake ride.

Utilise the skillsets of people in the bike gang. Ask designer and art director Kate if she might have time to whip up an Instagram and Facebook banner graphic for the invitation. Ask paper artist and cake connoisseur Lacy to map out possible places to cycle to. Ask Pia the baking champ of the world if she could please please please make one of her amazing confections (she made two!), etc.

Plan and confirm the route.

Invite people! This year, we made the cake ride for women, trans, femme, and gender non-binary cyclists. I also cheekily shared the invitation with some QTBIPOC groups, because as Gal-dem magazine asks, “Where are all the women of color at cycling events?” We encouraged people to bake and bring cakes and coffee, because (a) you get to know each other better and (b) it makes the event more accessible to those with tighter purse strings.

Instructions: On the day

Have a small heart attack as you realise that the route you suggested doesn’t work because of the road blocks for the Berlin Marathon.

Enjoy an espresso at the meeting point and grin broadly as you see that Laura, Kate, Mariagiovanna, and Kim are already there.

Greet all the participants, make them feel welcome and inform people of the general plan, and also how bunch cycling hand signals work.

Off you go! Have fun! I learnt that the person in the front has to do a bit of work to keep the bunch together, and that everyone should ride all together on the road, or all together on the pavement (i.e. not half the group on the road, and the other half on the shitty stack of bricks with tree roots busting through them that Berlin tries to tell you are official cycle lanes).
