Sunny afternoon with a friend @cakesandbubbleslondon for some #veuveclicquot and “cheese” cake - their signature Baron Bigod cheese, hazelnut and white chocolate cake plus a slice of the Burnt Basque cheesecake. All desserts at #cakesandbubbles were created by pastry chef #AlbertAdria (@ferranadria brother) and the place is in the @hotelcaferoyal on Regent Street. • #TravelswithaGourmet #TWAGLondon #foodstagram #foodie #champagne #cake (at Cakes & Bubbles) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdTmSvLjmaW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Cake and Bubbles
Tumblr media
For many people, when they hear the name Adria, they automatically think of El Bulli, the restaurant that was almost universally seen as the best in the World, headed up by Ferran Adria.  Now it’s got to be tough to be his brother but Albert Adria has done pretty well for himself to become known as one of the best pastry chefs in the world.  So when he opened Cakes and Bubbles, a dessert bar in the Hotel Cafe Royal, it was definitely worth a go!

We decided to head down one afternoon to give it a try and started with this, the lightest carrot cake.  It came in a hefty holder but picking up the cake itself, it was pretty light!  That’s partly down to the fact that there was only a sliver of cake in it but surrounded by frosting ice cream and some actual carrot all sandwiched between 2 carrot meringues.  This was a winner!  Quite delicate but super full of flavour and really quite carroty.  I really liked this!

Next up was a stroopwaffle ice cream sandwich.  It came in this golden envelope but once you opened it this is what you found:

Pretty much exactly as advertised, it was a couple of stroopwaffles with ice cream in the middle.  What you can’t see is a caramel centre instead of the usual toffee centre.  This was good but nothing too special.  The presentation seemed a little gimmicky to be honest but the thing itself was tasty.

Continuing the theme of really light desserts, this was an “air pancake”.  This was essentially a yoghurt mousse with a crispy sugar crème brûlée topping like shell with maple butter and it came with a blueberry jam.  This is one of the signature desserts and while it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting (I figured even an air pancake would have some flour in it), it was good.  The yoghurt was light and the maple butter was a really nice touch.  The crispy shell was sweet and provided some crunch which I think it needed.

Now onto what seems to be the most talked about of dishes here, the cheesecake.  The thing really does look like a small wheel of cheese.  It’s a whipped cheese inside a hazelnut and white chocolate crust.  The cheese filling really is quite savoury and it is definitely more cheesey than cakey but I thought it was great!  It came with some biscuits that helped balance out its richness and I think it’d be a struggle even for me to finish a whole one myself; definitely one to share!
I thought Cakes and Bubbles was a lot of fun!  The desserts are a bit pricey but all were pretty creative and tasted great!  I’d definitely be up for going again!
