Remember when people were calling you the "long lost McElroy sister"? Do you see the similarity at all, or do you think it's just because you share a similar creative niche (gaming/streaming/comedy) with the McElroy brothers?
Lol, "when" people were doing it.
I still get it to this day, friend, despite my constant protests.
I used to understand, and it was even expected initially if not personally encouraged! There was definitely a period of time where they were my biggest comedic/creative inspirations, and the truth of the matter is that I am a mannerisms sponge. I mimic people around me, and people that inspire me, and whether or not it's more than the average person I have no clue, but I will go through seasons of daily watching a particular personality or creator I'm fond of and/or inspired by and usually come out the other end having picked up certain tendencies VERY quickly, a large portion of those being speech patterns.
There's definitely a segment of my content around 2017/2018 or so where, yeah, you can very much tell I adopted a McElroy-esque speaking pattern directly (like what felt like 70% of other Tumblr users also did lol) and it was both because of how much of their content I was into at the time AND also because at the time I found their output inspiring as someone who was used to more... Loud Gamer forms of comedy, to put it bluntly. So at first I took the comparisons in stride and saw it as a signal of my own growth as an entertainer, and my ability to be funny in a way that wasn't just Loud = Funny.
But the thing you have to know about me, and my time as even a minor public figure, is that this comparison was not the first of its that was constantly levied at me, and it unfortunately was not the last one in the slightest. Some will remember the days in which I was a reasonably renowned "Bill Cipher" impersonator in the Gravity Falls fandom, and the pattern was very similar at the time. I dealt with people CONSTANTLY telling me that, despite all of my attempts to separate myself from the voice work I did as the character, I always sounded Just Like Bill even when I was just using my casual speaking voice. If this sounds familiar to those of you who have only been around since the dubs popped off, it's likely because I also go through the same thing ever since I became known for Sonic impressions.
And then outside of voice work I've had my style of content continue to be compared to the McElroy's body of work and even beyond to the likes of Jerma and other big-name-of-the-era content creators. And I have to once again stress: I am completely self-aware that it is not entirely unfounded. I mean, the most recent one I got was just the other day when on stream someone told me I had a speech pattern similar to Northernlion. And like, I even admitted right then and there.... yeah! That makes sense! I've had NL compilations going into my ears and brain for hours upon hours on end lately. So I don't mean to only complain and say "this makes no sense" with delusions that it's completely baseless. BUT, I guess if I do have to circle around to a point, it would be that, though I can occasionally understand comparisons, I would hope y'all in turn can understand why it might not be an easy thing for someone like me to hear, especially in the way it never really seems to go away? Even if one like Bill Cipher fades out, the whole "SnapCube is just a female version of [insert larger male peer in the content space]" thing is something that cycles along regardless. And I get it, it's human nature to compare and contrast. I do it too! But as someone who is always trying to stand out in what I do and make my own value as an individual known above the cacophony of content saturation, I do implore people to think twice about the language they use when making otherwise favorable comparisons. Recommending my content by saying something like "if you like Jerma/McElroys/NL/etc., then SnapCube gives off similar vibes" makes of a WORLD of a difference compared to "This stream is just something Jerma would do" or "Penny is just a female Griffin McElroy" (both things I have heard almost verbatim, constantly). They approach the same ideas, but one gives me so much more of a chance to like... start off a first impression as My Own Person and not just a derivative Girl Alternative, if that makes sense.
Whoops I talked about this way too much :) Can you tell I think about this a lot LMAO
Anyway here's the obligatory joke response that's been spread before

So I went to Miku Expo 2024 last night (the Vancouver show) and I wanted to talk about it while it's top of mind.
TL;DR I had a lot of fun, while there were some things I wish were different (mostly the screen), it wasn't a bad first Miku concert IMO (But I do wanna see more shows). More under the cut!
First of all, it was super cool to see all the different people there to see Miku and the other Vocaloids. Like, I've been to conventions before and it's always cool to see a horde of people dressed as various anime characters or animals, but to see everyone dressed specifically as Voicaloids and Project Sekai characters was new for me.
About the merch on sale at the concert, I was surprised that they were doing most of it outside and that the inside merch stand had barely anything- at least when I got in. That could just be bad timing on my end. If you're reading this and you wanna buy merch at one of the upcoming shows (especially a glowstick), make sure to get there early. For Vancouver, they did send out an email the day before saying that they were selling merch outside starting at 2pm, but I wasn't able to get there before then.
I did get the VIP package merch but it's kinda.... well it's not bad or anything, and I'm glad to have it but some of it feels a little cheap. For example, the hand fan is cute but feels flimsy, and the tote bag has a really nice design but the heat pressing makes me not wanna use it because I'm worried about cracking the art. On the other hand, I really like the lanyard that came with the package; The art was done by Socky and I liked it so much that I bought the backpack that also has that art.

Onto the show. You may have already heard this but yes, It wasn't the usual hologram, where they have a sheet of glass with the visual projected onto it, it was just a normal screen where they played the visual. It did feel like I was watching one of those hologram-ready videos on my phone but on a giant TV, but it was still cool to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's also a side-by-side of how the hologram looks vs the display using on the rocks from Magical Mirai 2021 and last night's show. While it's not fair to use a pro-shot vs what looks like a musical theater bootleg sime tutorial to show this, I hope it gets the point across. (Miku Expo 2024 on the left and Magical Mirai 2021 on the right)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I liked the setlist also, it can be found at this link here, but some standouts to me were, Miku by Anamanaguchi, The Vampire, Unknown Mother Goose, Childish War, On the Rocks, Sore ga Anata no Shiawase to Shite mo, Gimmie x Gimmie (Love this song so much), World is Mine (everyone screamed at the first "Sekai de" (including me)), the band introduction, Tell Your World (It's not my favorite or anything, but they shot out confetti at one point and that was cool.), and Intergalactic Bond.
I want to expand a bit on the band introduction and them as a whole, I loved that the band got attention and their names were shown. I watched some Magical Mirai videos and I see that this practice might be from that, so I'm glad that was carried over. They all were stellar and watching them was really exciting, the drummer- Dylan was always so cool to look at, Tobias the keyboardist was dancing near the beginning of Gimmie x Gimmie and that was a vibe, the bassist and guitarist- Leanne and Vixen's Diary respectively were fun to watch when they would get into the song and headbang and bounce around.
Lastly, I was surprised that Luka only got 2 songs (one of them was a duet with Miku). I (very sadly) expect MEIKO and KAITO to get shafted when it comes to songs, but not Luka!
Quick shout-outs to some specific concert goers; Shieonn, who made stickers and was handing them out before the show (Here's her Twitter!),
Tumblr media
The person near me who shouted either "I LOVE YOU JERMA!" or "I LOVE YOU DRUMMER!" at the end of one of the songs (I think it was World is Mine), the girl near me who was trying to get pictures and video of the show using her 3DS, and this one person I saw outside the venue entrance as the show was letting out who was dressed up as Sonic Miku, I wanted to say that I loved the fit, but I didn't wanna just walk up to you randomly at almost 10PM and possibly freak you out.
Overall, I'd go again but please for the love of god, don't just have a screen for the Vocaloids!

[Jerma's voice] Would Medic watch Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack? Serious answers only! Just kidding, let's be silly about it.
If you don't know what I'm talking about. Don't ask how I do huehuehue ( ◡_◡ )
Medic And Junji Ito's Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack
————————————————————
JERMA MENTION??? Lol, I've seen the anime adaptation of Gyo, and ough, I'm torn. On one hand, it's super cool to see the work animated, but also it's not as fucked up as the manga. But it's just fine to write about!
————————————————————
ALSO mutual appreciation comment! Love you for all the asks and ideas, also love you for giving me a chance to talk about Medic (he's so silly I love talking about him, but you've probably figured that out by now :p)
————————————————————
TW: GROSS AND DISGUSTING THEMES, SPOILERS FOR JUNJI ITO'S GYO: TOKYO FISH ATTACK.
————————————————————
Okay to start, he definitely would watch it. I think this man has always been a hard-core Junji Ito fan. He loves how disgusting (Listen I love Junji Ito so much, but good god is Gyo gross 😭) Ito's works are. For the sake of being able to give you his take on the episode, we'll pretend he hasn't seen or read Gyo already.
We're maybe twenty seconds in and he's already a little disappointed, this isn't nearly as good as the mangas he's read, but he continues to give it a chance. The second Kayori crushed the first fish walker and he saw the blood spurt, he was very much enjoying his choice to stick around. Is also thrilled at the fish walker itself, what a disgusting little thing! He pauses the show to just, look at every detail of the fish walker, maybe even has a sketchbook that he grabs to just get a quick idea of the anatomy it would have. LET ME TELL YOU WHEN THIS MAN SEES THE SHARK FISH WALKER. Giggling, screaming, obsessed. He thinks it's so cool. When it dies he's very upset. Genuinely wishes they were real so he could study it. Also takes sketches, pausing to get different angles. Thinks Kayori is insane for getting on a plane and going to Tokyo, like, mouth agape at the stupidity. But then again, he'd go to the heart of all this madness to get some research done, so he let it slide. Gets so upset at the scene where Kayori and her cameraman friend are running away from the shark, he hates how it looks. (No hate to the animators they had a big ask but it's so bad guys 😭) Remember the reaction to the shark? Yeah, multiply it by ten for the octopus. Is just floored by how cool of a concept it is. Like he'll be up for hours imagining all different types of animals and sea life as fish walkers and how that would work.
The minute the infection aspect comes into play he's also so hyped. Body horror is his favorite type of horror after all. Picks up on Kayori's cut before the anime even really expresses it as an issue (him being a doctor and all) and is weirdly excited to see our main character turn at some point. Is slightly disappointed to learn that the fish walkers are a mix of machinery and viruses, (he'd rather these things just be full-on viruses) but hey maybe Engie would be down to talk about how the process of engineering of these freaks would go with Medic sometime, who knows? Human fish walkers are a whole other fascination for him. Immediately starts trying to work out in his mind how a real one would work and operate, has a couple of sketches going, and wants to teleport himself in to study and prove it. He loves it. The mega fish walker is yet another "I have those visceral need to study this." Like I don't think I can put into words how rabid this man goes over all the opportunities he would have if he was just dropped into this world for one day. Is mildly upset at the fact that Kayori is immune to the disease as he loves the trope of a main character turning into a monster.
————————————————————
So after all that, I feel like there's one burning question.
"Would he make fish walkers happen?"
And in my opinion? No, he wouldn't. Sure he's insane, and maybe a little sadistic, but I don't think this man would make such a risky decision to make a virus, and a virus that causes incredible pain and graphic body horror at that. He might be a silly guy, but he's not silly enough to cause actual damage to those he cares about.
————————————————————
Well! I had to rewatch Gyo at least twice to write this. I'm sorry it's not super long, or particularly good, I had to pause multiple times 😭 I hope you like this though 🫶🏻

Now, Jerma is a quite masculine guy. Some people would disagree, maybe even way more people than the ones that would agree. But in the end of the day it comes down to this: he has room to grow.
It was a little unusual when he mentioned a "transition" on stream, off-handedly and so casually that the more transgender part of the audience might not have even noticed, having accepted transitioning as such a normal part of human life does that to you. Obviously though, questions and even speculation popped up nonetheless, even if it didn't catch a wide spread.
But Jerma is famously girly. A normal person wouldn't agree, your average Joe doesn't understand the nuances of this stuff, but he wears makeup. Not even in an emo way, just casually fixes his brows, contours his face - you can see it if you look for it. Some streams he puts on eyeshadow just because he can.
Nobody really asks Jerma about pronouns. I mean, everyone defaults to he/him, but for feminism's sake wouldn't it be much more reasonable to assume they/them or even she/her first? When asked about it, Jerma just laughed the question off, implying in a joke that anything goes, although nobody's really sure for certain.
They shaved their hair recently. It made for a fun stream, even if it's not the most original of all ideas, but shaving streams can always get wild. It was mesmerizing to look at the screen seeing such a bold (haha, bald) transformation, and it was then, for some reason, that my brain had the urge to call Jerma butch or even girl. Well, we all know that one post. Butch Jerma and femme jerma, a great classic.
Ome day Jerma announced they will be changing their name to something else. Well, until we didn't know what it was going to be, we still had nothing else to use but Jerma, but most people were pretty excited and ready for the change. Supportive comments overflowed.
Jack.
When announced, the name ran a chill down my spine. It was deeply terrifying. No, gotta be just a coincidence though, right? Sure, many people were going to make the obvious jokes, but... no, it was fine.
Jack kept feminizing. It was weird. The mascara highlighted her cheekbones, which honestly fit her quite well. Dresses were on the table, and wigs not out of question. Those streams have felt more like girls night than any in-person girls night that I have ever been to, if girls nights happened as the world was crumbling.
It was when Jack put on a pink wig that I felt like I hace finally gone insane. This cannot be a coincidence, and yet. Nothing truly indicated that this was a reference to another streamer, other than those conclusions I've basically drawn myself. Yes, lots of people agreed, but honestly, Jack's done more convoluted bits before.
I woke up in a dark room. Chained to a metal chair, oh, you know the deal. A screen lit up in front of me struggling, failing to break out. A disembodied voice announced:
"You are watching a stream. You need to tell which streamer you're watching or the neurotoxins will flood the room in five minutes. Good luck."
A cold sweat ran down my forehead. On the screen was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. And her name was Jack Manifold. And yet, I was unable to tell which one.

We are now within the second third or so of Kamen Rider Revice! It's been a pretty wild journey so far, and I'm glad ya'll enjoy these liveblog/recaps/review hybrids, even if only mildly. I've only done something like this once before, when Chuggaaconroy remade his LP of EarthBound a few years ago and I gave my own thoughts/additional commentary as I watched along.
Because I don't know how to tag, they're basically lost in an endless sea of reblogs, so I can't find them, but I had a very fun time doing it anyway, so getting to do something similar to it again feels like a fun way to spend my time. And since these're weekly rather than daily, I can give myself a bit more breathing room! How bout that, eh?
Now, without further ado... Spoilers, I guess...
GIFU WILL BE REAL
IN 52 MINUTES
-Probably not the exact time frame, but comic book time is weird like that.
-And here we see Kudo eating a juicy steak. Yes, I finally remembered Lawyer Guy's name too, shush.
-Ohhhh, those girls are dressed like Aguilera-sama. That's... that brings up a lot of questions. Does he have a type for Japanese women in flamenco dresses?
-How does he select who is worthy to undergo Giftex process? I mean, aside from summoning the contracted demons, I haven't seen Olteca do much. Hell, Julio's been doing more underhanded stuff! Is it seniority?
-Dude, don't stab your steak like that, plates are expensive!
-Amahiko's like "Oh, fuck, I didn't sign up for that."
-HE'S EVEN MORE SCARED OF SAKURA I CAN'T-
-Ohhhhhhhhh, the Mammoth! I just thought they could directly summon it like they do with the Gifu Juniors, and even after we learned more about how they work, I just figured they stamped somebody directly. That's some subtle-ass foreshadowing!
-Hey, don't tell Hiromicchi to shut up, George. You just dropped that on him!
-Y'know, I'd tell you to smash the Gifu Stamp and be done with it but my years of experience dealing with cursed artifacts in video games and comic books made me aware that this is an extremely risky and terrible idea.
-I'm absolutely certain that George has worked for the SCP Foundation at some point, in which case that'd explain a lot about him.
-Oh my god, Commander Wakabayashi's literally doing the Jerma sus face. ...also, I love that extremely blurry Zero-One figure.
-See, this is why we double check our alarms and schedules Sakura.
-5 AM, JESUS CHRIST GEN WHAT KIND OF PANCAKES ARE YOU MAKING!? ...and more importantly, can I have some?
-No, don't run from the pancakes, come back!
-I don't really have room to criticize anybody's sleeping habits, I somehow always wake before at 7 AM and lie in bed struggling to get up.
-It's a lovely morning in the village, and you are a horrible Vice.
-Ooooooh, there he is!
-Ahhhhh, wow, that Kamen Rider Jeanne sure is cool, huh Sakura~? ...for some reason, I keep forgetting that Kamen Riders are like... actual superheroes in-universe in these shows. I never really got that vibe in Saber because of how few extras there were because of the pandemic, so I kinda just assumed that the Sword of Logos controlled all the media about them to keep people out of danger, or because it's Isaac, hog all the power of the Wonder Ridebooks to himself.
-"Yabai" indeed.
-I'm curious now, how often does a Kamen Rider find themselves on World Star Hip Hop? I know Tomoko became a Kamen Rider fan in Fourze by watching low-res recordings of the Showa Riders, there was a running gag early on in Saber about Mei recording and posting fights, Gaim was basically all about that for a while, Drive was on national TV during the Nira arc, and of course the Riders of each season inevitably end up all over the news for one reason or another, but...
-Like, is it possible that Eiji once intervened during a brawl at an influencer convention and then had to see himself trend on Twitter as "Transforming Asian Hobo"? Does Sento deliberately try to invoke this every chance he gets because he absolutely would. Is there like a whole branch of Kamen Rider-based cryptozoology and subsequently a whole genre of Creepypasta, YouTube clickbait, and pornhub tags? Do Trevor Noah and John Oliver dedicate whole segments to them? Is there a reason why I'm asking all the wrong world-building questions?
-Mmmm, public transit. Delicious.
-DON'T GRAB PAPA YOU DICK
-Don't worry Vice, sometimes I forget about important villains too. But no longer!
-I assume he just mopped those floors, he has every right to be pissed!
-Ah, so... does the glue on the eggshell shield last forever? Cause that's some powerful-ass glue if it does, it'd almost be too good for home projects.
-Wow, none of Sakura's friends have any faith in her taste in men. If I were her, I'd be mortally offended.
-WELL DON'T GRAB HER LIKE THAT!
-Oh hi, Wakabayashi. ...is it seriously only behind a hologram?
-You get the bag and fumble it, George gets the bag, flips it and tumbles it.
-Are you proud of yourself?! You made Hiromicchi cry!
-I'm sad now :(
-This show is heading to some really dark places, holy fuck. I... I feel uncomfortable, I think I'm gonna fast forward a little bit.
-Okay, Kudou, I'm sorry you've gotten cucked out of your hopes and dreams by the extremely unfair Japanese criminal legal system. But like... I'm still reeling.
-Y'know, you guys seem way too calm for an active school intruder situation.
-Yeah, punch that motherfucker!
-Jesus Christ, this show.
-Did nobody notice the weird mariachi guy walking around!? I think that'd be a lot more noteworthy than a random creeper like Amahiko.
-Nothing wrong with a fast lane life once in a while!
-Ooooooh, the shield can be used for the OsutoderuHammer50! That's cool!
-Kick his ass Sakura!
-YES! KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILL!
-Oh my god, the Remixes can become one big abomination. ...I absolutely shudder to imagine what it'd look like when they all combine.
-Oh God, I almost forgot about Hiromicchi!
-YOU BITCH
-OH MY GOD I WAS KIDDING HE REALLY DOES MAKE A JERMA IMPOSTOR FACE
-Hiromicchi :(
-We were too late, Ikki-nii. Didn't help that George threw him the fucking stamp!
-Ah, so Chameleon Guy doesn't like his original body?
-Everything I learn about the Deadmans makes me wanna take a shower.
-It kinda surprises me how Olteca is the bigger asshole between himself and Julio, since Colonel Zol/Golden Wolf Man was a Nazi and Dr. Shinigami/Ikadevil was just some guy, comparatively speaking. I still don't buy into the idea that Julio wasn't in on Aguilera's role in the Giftex plan, given his past sadism and how he forced Amahiko into becoming a Phase 2 Deadman, but hey, maybe we'll get an explanation next episode.
-So, Aguilera's not the Great Leader, got it. On the one hand, we don't really have female main villains, so I guess I can get mad at Toei and Kinoshita for cucking me out of a #Girlboss final villain. On the other, this means that there's a chance we'll get a deeply compelling redemption arc or some kind of agreement between her and the Igarashi fam, or some sort of genuine self-sacrifice from Julio for her life that makes her re-evaluate her beliefs, or... something I'm not expecting, who knows?
-Wait, Final Showdown? Is the season over already? I'm absolutely kidding, but hey! Looks like I'm finally getting that nightclub fight I always wanted! Hell yeah! ...but at what cost?
