#can you tell i'm procrastinating schoolwork LOL

thinking about a discussion i saw this morning (please accept these very half developed ideas!) and i do think that part of the reason that the silmarillion fandom pays less attention to female characters (outside of misogyny, which is also a huge part of it) is that basically every single woman is a wife, and most of them are mothers?

i can't help but notice that the majority of popular male characters are unmarried and childless (looking at ao3 statistics, with the notable counter-examples of elrond, who is very often a child in fanfic, and feanor, arda's most divorced elf). which is possibly because many of the most influential male characters in the silmarillion are unmarried and childless, but it does feel a little disproportional.

some very disorganized thoughts on this phenomenon, presented with very little confidence because i'm just bouncing ideas around:

queer ships are far more popular in the fandom as it stands now, because it is heavily queer, and there is very little woman-to-woman interaction in the silm. the majority of the most popular m/m ships are based on some meaningful interaction between the characters. many of f/f ships involve characters that have never met (indis/miriel, finduilas/nienor) or have very limited interactions (thuringwethil/luthien). ------------ this does not explain, however, why m/m ships between people who have no interactions at at all (erestor/glorfindel, celebrimbor/maeglin, etc) routinely get more attention than f/f ships.

basically every woman's story is defined in relation to her husband's (and usually children). idril, i think, is the semi-outlier here (and to some extent aredhel). but even then -- the majority of the male characters, even if they are married, have a lot of story outside of their marriage/relationship (so much so that characters like finrod, fingon, and angrod can go from married with children to unmarried in some drafts have very little changed!). can that be said of any married female character in the text? i don't think so. once a woman in the silmarillion marries and has children, the progression of her story is almost always defined very heavily by her relationship to her husband and children. fingon rules the same and dies the same whether or not he has a wife and son -- idril's story would be very different without tuor and earendil. feanor gets to do a lot of things after his marriage to nerdanel -- fingolfin does very much after his marriage to anaire. both of the women disappear from the story once their marriages are no longer relevant. ---- here i will note that some male characters ARE heavily defined by their relationships to their families. turgon, whose motivations are very heavily based around the death of his wife and protecting his daughter, comes to mind. so does thingol, whose wife and daughter are equally central to his story. that said, neither of those characters is popular in fandom.

to expand on the previous point: characters whose main stories are romance stories, including male characters, do not tend to be very popular. earendil has just under 700 works on ao3. beren has just over 500. (elwing and luthien, for reference, have just over 700 and 800 respectively). despite our love for shipping, the fandom seems to be disinterested in parts of the book with a heavy romance focus. is it possible that the fact that nearly every single woman having a prominent romance arc "turns fandom off" them?

only four unmarried women come to mind as counter examples (watch me miss someone obvious). these are finduilas, haleth, findis, and lalwen. findis and lalwen are footnotes that disappear quickly from the story without being given much to do (which doesn't stop us with erestor or caranthir, but still). finduilas, despite being unmarried, is heavily defined by a tragic love triangle. haleth is the notable exception -- i would say she is more popular in fandom than many women, but less than most male characters. the only real explanations i can give for her getting so little fandom attention is misogyny/bias, the general fact that humans in the silmarillion get less love than elves in fandom, and and possibly her having little connection to any of the other popular characters outside of caranthir.

that being said, i do still think misogyny/the general fandom tendency to ignore female characters in favor of male ones is responsible for a good chunk of the difference. i also really welcome feedback on these thoughts because i feel very uncertain of them. the more i think about it, the more i can find counter-examples and outliers to a lot of the trends i'm talking about here -- perhaps i overgeneralized. is there no coherent analysis to be drawn here?

currently leaning in the direction of "this is a vague but not all-encompassing trend in the text, which affects fandom to some extent without explaining the preference for male characters and m/m ships entirely."

to be honest, i'm not sure how much longer i'll be able to balance things well since i plan on getting a job at the start of the new year 💀 but as of right now, i just divide my days up into a rough schedule. tuesday/wednesday/thursday is all for volunteering, friday and the weekend is for schoolwork, with my hobbies in between to split it up. i've been doing online college ever since covid hit and haven't really seen the reason in switching to physical college yet when this is so much cheaper, which also helps. they just throw some digital textbooks at me and tell me to write papers, aka the only two academic things i'm good at.

until it's time for me to take my required math course............................................... that'll be the end of me.

i think a part of it might just be this very weird idiosyncrasy i have where i cannot focus on anything if i know i have something looming over my head. i might procrastinate, but once i finally get started on it, i'm sticking with it until it's finished. i'm just a very schedule based person.

i wish i could give good, universal advice, but i honestly feel like it’s dependent on every person?? that being said, what i feel works for me is sitting through with a task until it’s finished/closed to being finished. i know i’m screwed if i keep taking breaks and my time starts ticking away. but i know this can be extremely hard for some people depending on what our brain is up to. i’m sorry if this isn’t too helpful, i feel it’d just be tone-deaf to go ‘just focus lol’

My best assets are smile, eyes, personality, singing voice, artistic skills, writings, intelligence, and oratorical skills...so I can consider myself as a singer, artist, orator, and a top student who's a former active campus ministry member with three roles (choir leader, psalm singer, and reader). Currently an incoming college freshman, learning how to cook and have so many interests, to the point I don't know what I'm into because of my dreams to become a popular Filipino YouTuber, a novelist, and being part of a successful chorale competing internationally...I also consider joining pageants at school too once the pandemic ends, but maybe.

Cedric’s a very good student (though I suspect he’s somewhat of a procrastinator himself), so I can also see you two supporting each other through schoolwork and celebrating each other’s successes.

Like you, Cedric has a strong urge to do the right thing. Talking to him about social issues stirs up a need to help, and I could see you two doing volunteer work together in your spare time.

Let’s be honest, it would take you two so long to ask each other out. You were probably already really close friends, but the insecurities and “what if?” questions from both of you delayed an actual relationship.

When you finally started dating, you were both so relieved. You still share a laugh at how almost nothing changed in the way you interacted with each other.

While with mutual friends, Remus sometimes likes to sit back and just watch you, especially when you get really talkative because this is when you become the most expressive. Hello there, I was wondering if I could have a regular matchup for Haikyuu please?

I am 5'2, she/her pronouns and straight. I'm pale, with natural rosy cheeks. People say I have doe eyes, dark brown. Hair color is the same color and it goes down a few centimeters off the shoulders, but I usually wear it in a ponytail. I am toned, not like a fitness influencer lol.

I am an INFJ, Pisces. I am anti-social most of the time. I'll only talk if necessary to work on a school project or my friends are uncomfortable speaking. I am the "mom" friend of the group, always making sure everyone is doing okay and keeping up with their schoolwork. And while you hardly ever made your choices based off of Kenji’s, the high school you went to had no bearings on the things you liked to do

You would still go to the same small dance company every other day. You’d still walk the same scenic trail to walk your dog (and scare yourself with your own existentialism lol)

And regardless of where you went, you’d still treat Kenji like your rambunctious teenage son. Making sure he’s keeping up with his homework, volleyball, and self-care needs

Besides, the curriculum seemed flexible enough so you didn’t have to be weighed down by excessive schoolwork

While we’re on the subject of schoolwork though, one of your teachers seemed to have an obsession with “group collaboration”

Normally, you’d stick to Kenji’s side while he momentarily teased you for “being obsessed with him”. But, things were being mixed up for one particular project

The name was vaguely familiar to you, mentioned once by Kenji while you were on the subject of volleyball. But, it was only in passing. You couldn’t put a name to a face

Well, that is, until a tall shadow loomed over you and your desk

The boy behind you was what you assumed to be your partner, big and built like a solid brick wall. His face seemed permanently stuck in an intimidating and contemplative expression

But…you could tell that he was trying not to scare you by the way he slouched, or make you feel too small compared to him

He looked awkwardly off to the side before speaking

“I’m…your partner.”

The fact that you knew Aone was trying to show himself friendly comforted you. So, you decided to put in the same amount of effort that he was into making him feel safe with you

However, after the period, you were specifically warned by Kenji:

“Aone…he’s got a habit of looking more scary than he actually is. Judging by how you guys worked today, I can tell he likes you. But, don’t let him intimidate you too much, okay? ‘Cause he takes that kind of stuff really hard.”

Of course, while you weren’t worried about being scared away by your partner, you understood Kenji’s concerns. His warning was an indicator of something that’s happened multiple times. And you saw it firsthand while you and Aone worked together

You saw how people refused to sit next to him on the train, how mothers pulled their children close when you and him walked by, how most women and smaller men would go out of their way to move to the side of the street you and Aone weren’t on

And while Aone seemed used to it, it didn’t keep him from looking upset every time it happened. And in turn, it made you upset

Not because you pitted him, but because you knew Aone was so much more than the monster under their beds

Without even telling him, he picked up on your schedule for dance practices, waiting just outside with his jacket and a bento from the convenience store Kenji mentioned that you liked

You realized that he hated ordering for himself at restaurants, so you made sure to ask for the foods he liked before going to work at the café you’d meet at sometimes

Kenji mentioned how he’s tried to get you to become the volleyball club’s manager, but has declined because of dance and other responsibilities

But, you did start working at the library so you could check out extra books on certain days. And you did tutoring for English and Spanish to rack up volunteer hours

And suddenly, Aone had an idea

Now, Aone has had a crush on you since you worked on the project together. But, now that you regularly see each other for English tutoring, it’s been getting a lot harder to hide it

Every time you brushed up against him, he’d get so hot that he would begin to sweat

The more Aone learned about English, the more he appreciated the corny puns you made, even cracking a smile every once in a while

And appropriately for someone so quiet, Aone loves to listen to you talk about your aspirations as a dancer and interest in literature

There was just so much to love about you, Aone had to let it out somehow

On your end though, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The only change you’d note would be Aone opening up a bit more

However, you picked up on something going on during your tutoring sessions with Aone

The notebook that he often used during your time together? He started being a lot more secretive, selective about what he let you see in it

You saw that Aone would quickly flip over certain pages. And he never let you see the inside of the back cover

But, after one particular session, Aone offers to walk you home, since Kenji was busy

As you walked and talked, Aone only got more and more antsy about confessing to you

You just looked so beautiful in the evening light…

But, how would Aone ever put his feelings into words?

Until he realizes that he already did

When you finally get to your place, Aone hands you his notebook, completely red-faced:

“Look through it. Don’t hate me…”

And before you could reply, he had already left

You weren’t sure what you expected to see, but it certainly wasn’t what you actually saw in the notebook
