"C. D. Howe was not the definitive embodiment of the new managerial capitalism of the postwar world, which would be taken in directions that went well beyond his rather narrow outlook. By the time of the Pipeline Debate in 1956, Howe had come to assume the role of the old curmudgeon from a bygone era, as politicians and policymakers gained an even greater sense of the state’s capacity to intervene in the economy. Later economic nationalists of the 1960s and 1970s were apt to see Howe in terms of his postwar career, viewing him as the man who sold out Canada to the United States. But, as we have seen, he helped create a more active state that was strenuously opposed by powerful figures within Canadian big business. Significantly, although the Great Depression and the experience of the wartime economy had sounded the death knell of the old political economy, the new managerial ethic embraced by Howe held firm to one old and fundamental assumption: that workers would be following orders. While George Grant and the left-nationalists later lamented Canada’s apparent failure to produce a truly national bourgeoisie, commentators of the period thought Canada’s business class powerful and aggressive enough. “Any attempt to picture Canadian-owned and controlled capital as a domesticated tabby cat as compared with the ravening Bengal tiger of foreign capital should be treated with healthy skepticism,” wrote Louis Rosenberg in 1947. “They belong to the same species and have similar claws.”"
- Don Nerbas, Dominion of Capital: The Politics of Big Business and the Crisis of the Canadian Bourgeoisie, 1914-1947. University of Toronto Press, 2013. p. 249-250.
[The Rosenberg quote is from Watt Hugh McCollum [Louis Rosenberg], Who Owns Canada? An Examination of the Facts Concerning the Concentration of Ownership and Control of the Means of Production, Distribution and Exchange in Canada (Ottawa: Woodsworth House, 1947).]

i don’t want to be a contrarian and op is right that it IS wayyyy more difficult to travel internationally in the US than in europe but i do feel like this is a bit exaggerated or depends a lot on where you live. my roundtrip plane tickets to paris during peak tourist season with inflexible dates came to $600. let’s say you stay a week and pay $50 a night for lodging (i’m assuming you’re staying in hostels or in an airbnb private room). that’s $350. travel + lodging = less than a grand. obviously you’re going to want to spend money on food and do touristy things etc so it could quickly become a lot more than that, and a grand IS prohibitively expensive for a lot of people - that’s definitely a lot of money.
but if you make over 100k? you can probably afford to spare roughly a grand to go on a week-long vacation at least at some point in your life. or at least not be like “i don’t know if i’ll ever be able to afford leaving.”
also, again a factor of where you live and it might be because i’ve spent a lot of time living near the US-canada border but people do casually go back and forth quite frequently.
(screenshot bc i don’t want to be annoying on op’s post and i do agree with most of this but hdjhdf)

do you think there's a reason we say "braver than any US Marine" specifically? like,,, are Marines known for being the bravest branch of the military? or are they just easiest to top? cause no one seems to speak about them outside of like everyone being braver than them.... almost makes you wonder if it is impressive?
