“MERELY PRISONERS, SAYS TASCHEREAU,” Montreal Gazette. November 30, 1932. Page 4. --- Membership of Labor Defence League No Reason for Favors ---- NO JAIL INVESTIGATION ---- Prisons as Well Administered as Possible - Premier Trapped in Photograph With Agitators ---- Persons serving sentences in the prisons of the province of Quebec are merely prisoners, no matter whether members of an organization claiming to be political or not, was a fact which Premier Taschereau made quite clear yesterday when he received Miss Bella Gordon, secretary of the Canadian Labor Defence League, who brought with her relatives of five men now serving a term in prison after conviction on a charge of seditious utterance.
The Premier told those before him that the usual procedure must take its course as regards the prisoners in question, and definitely refused to entertain a request that there be an inquiry into conditions in the prisons of the province.
The five men serving sentence, each of one year, are Dave Kashton, Phillip Ritchie, Dave Chalmers, Tom Miller and Fred Rose. The latter two have been removed from the Montreal Jail to the jail at Quebec.
Miss Gordon, speaking for the league, asked that the two men in question be returned to the Montreal jail, for the members of their families were not rich enough to go to Quebec to visit them on the occasions when Jail regulations allow of visiting. On this point, the Premier said he had no personal knowledge as to why "the two men in question had been transferred, but presumably those in charge of such matters must have had their reasons. However, he said he would inquire into the matter and, if he came to the conclusion that their return to Montreal was justified, it would be done.
As to an investigation into the jails, and a further request that a member of the league be allowed to visit the prisoners each week to see the members of the league who are incarcerated, the Premier gave a categorical denial.
JAILS SATISFACTORY.
"An Investigation is useless,” said the Premier. "I am convinced by reports which reach me and my knowledge of conditions that the jails are as well administered as possible. Furthermore, these men have no reason to complain, because they were sentenced after having had a fair trial, and they are treated exactly as other prisoners. More than that is impossible. The matter is ended."
The Premier terminated the interview, and the delegation, after some futile efforts to continue the plea, left the office. However, they will have a souvenir of their visit to Mr. Taschereau. The delegation which had waited on the Premier prior to this one was a large one, and in the confusion of their going the Premier was told that someone wanted to photograph him, and would he walk into an adjoining room. Without bothering to inquire into the matter, Mr. Taschereau walked rapidly into the antechamber in question, told the photographer to make it snappy and was taken in company with Miss Gordon and those with her, the Premier not noticing they were standing about him. It was only after the same people were ushered into his own office as a delegation that he learned the company he had been keeping.
[AL: This interview with the Premier of Quebec by members of the CLDL is an impressive bit of political theatre. The CLDC demands for a public investigation of Quebec provincial prisons and for the political prisoner status of incarcerated communists was part of a broader campaign stirred by the riots in October 1932 at Kingston Penitentiary, where eight members of the outlawed Communist Party were incarcerated - and had played an important role in organizing those events. By November 1932 a nationwide campaign of letter writing, demanding the release of class war prisoners and a public inquiry into the Canadian penal system was underway.]

Alberta's Transphobic Government
I try really really hard to keep this blog about RPGs and writing. I really do. But when someone comes for my students, fists gets thrown.
We've seen the rise of transphobic legislation in various US states, as well as in Saskatchwan and New Brunswick. Now Alberta has joined the party. Despite the premier pointing out that there are trans youth in her extended family (I don't know how close the relation is, but somewhere in her close family) and swearing to not marginalize trans youth in the last election.
And ohhhh boy oh boy, my home province is once again aiming to hit the bottom of the barrel
Here's the tl;dr (quoted from the article):
Top and bottom surgeries will be banned for minors aged 17 and under. Doctors say bottom surgeries aren't performed on youth and top surgeries are rare.
Puberty blockers and hormone therapies for gender affirmation will not be permitted for children aged 15 and under.
Youths aged 16 and 17 will be permitted to start hormone therapies for gender affirmation "as long as they are deemed mature enough" and have parental, physician and psychologist approval.
Parental notification and consent will be required for a school to alter the name or pronouns of any child under age 15. Students who are 16 or 17 won't need permission but schools will need to let their parents know first.
Parents will have to "opt-in" their children every time a teacher plans to teach about gender identity, sexual orientation or sexuality. Alberta law currently requires parental notification and gives them the option to opt students out.
All third-party teaching materials on gender identity, sexual orientation or sexuality will need to be approved in advance by the education ministry.
Transgender women will be banned from competing in women's sports leagues. Smith said the government will work with leagues to set up coed or gender-neutral divisions for sports.
This goes well beyond what SK and NB have passed. It violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but Smith doesn't care and will likely use the Notwithstanding Clause to bypass it. Parents, medical professionals, and educators have all reacted with justified outrage. It is clear to those of us who care about youth that these policies will kill.
There is flattly no way in hell I will be deadnaming my students. For a government that says they want to remove red tape and bureaucracy, making parents opt-in to every single lesson involving anything other than heteronormativity sure seems like trying to use red tap to make teaching anything other than their ideology impossible.
What can you do to help?
If you are in Alberta, raise holy hell. Call your MLA, show up at the protests, add your voice to the chorus screaming that we don't want this.
If you are in Canada, there are also demonstrations in support of trans youth going on across the country. Let your MP know as well.
If you aren't from Canada, solidarity and visibility help! We've all seen how this shit has gone down in Florida and elsewhere. We need to stand together to stop this tide.
If you have business ties to Alberta and are able to divist them, please let the Alberta government know you are planning to do so if these proposals become law
Donate to 2SLGBTQ+ organizations in Alberta.
This is not the content I want to go viral from me... but if I have to choose one, make it this one. Please help us proect our kids.

AMC Picks Up Captain Nemo Origin Series ‘Nautilus’ From Disney, Plans to Air Show in 2024
Tumblr media
The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.
The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.
AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.”
“’Nautilus’ is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like ‘Orphan Black: Echoes,’” said Ben Davis, executive vice president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. “We are looking forward to bringing it to AMC+ and AMC as a special television event next year.”
Along with Latif, the cast of the show includes Georgia Flood, Thierry Fremont and Céline Menville, with guest appearances from Richard E. Grant, Anna Torv and Noah Taylor.
The series was developed and produced by Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand and Seven Stories’ Anand Tucker. James Dormer serves as writer and executive producer. Johanna Devereaux, Chris Loveall, Colleen Woodcock, and Daisy Gilbert also executive produce. Cameron Welsh serves as producer. Michael Matthews was the lead director.
“I am hugely excited that the efforts of everyone involved in the making of the show will be seen on such a prestigious network,” said Dormer.
“We are so thrilled to present the epic adventures of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine The Nautilus alongside the other incredible AMC universes,” said Marchand and Tucker. “The series will take viewers on a breathtaking journey with Nemo and his crew, battling terrifying creatures and the dark forces of the British Empire.”
“Nautilus” is distributed by Disney Entertainment and acknowledges the support from the Australian Government’s Location Incentive and from the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.

Goalkeeper (Jessie Fleming x Reader)
Tumblr media
a/n: based off this request here
warnings: none
prompt: in which the canwnt goes to watch a hockey game in which jessie’s girlfriend is the keeper.
Growing up in London Ontario meant that you played boys hockey. And for the longest time, you played boys hockey with Jessie Fleming. But once you both turned 13, she started to feel uncomfortable playing with boys, and being in the changing room, so she quit hockey and focused on soccer. And man did it pay off. But you never stopped talking, every second you weren’t at soccer or hockey training, you were at each others houses, together at school, or running track together. It was always Jessie and y/n.
"There go Jessie and y/n"
"Jessie and y/n, breaking school records"
And eventually it became
"Jessie and y/n, repping Canada"
Jessie made her start for the CANWNT at 15 and you were in the stands cheering her on. And when you turned 16, you made your debut for the Canada Women’s Hockey Team as their keeper. You only started dating at 17, which happened to be horrid timing as she was leaving for UCLA in a year, and due to your impeccable grades and your talent in Hockey, you got accepted into Yale. The long distance broke your heart everyday, and multiple nights were spent either crying from missing her, or falling asleep on facetime with her. But it all payed off… for a bit. You still played hockey for the Canadian team and you played in the the Premier Hockey Federation for the Toronto Six. And man, that distance between London, England and Toronto was even worse. But you were older, and more mature, and your league season ended while Jessie’s was only in the middle. So the second your season ended, you packed your bags and moved to London for a couple of months, working a well paying job at a cafe and playing hockey at the local rink whenever you could. It was a strange life, and definitely not a lifestyle that would work for everyone, but you didn’t care as long as you were with Jessie.
However, the start of your season was approaching and it was time to say goodbye to the blues and hello to the reds. That being the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team. They were all meeting up in Toronto, partly to go back to their Canadian roots, and partly to go see you play in your home opener of the season.
The night before the game, you did your day before game routine and then went to bed. Nothing beat the familiar feeling of your girlfriend by your side.
That morning, you got up at 9:00 like you did on all game days, kissed Jessie’s head and then pulled out a pre game outfit for you too wear as well as take out one of your jerseys for Jessie to wear. It was not the first time that the CANWNT came to watch you play. They tried to watch your games in person at least twice a year as they all cared about you a lot, considering you were the only person that made Jessie come out of her bubble fully. They called themselves "y/n’s army" and wore t-shirts with your face on them. You thought it was hilarious.
Jessie knew that you liked to leave for your games early and do your pre game routine all alone. So even though you only needed to be at the arena at 1:00, you left at 10:00 while Jessie took advantage of her off season to sleep.
You went to a coffee shop, walked around toronto, had lunch and then headed to the arena.
You met your teammates there, talking with them, laughing with them and answering their questions about if your "army" would be here today.
And they were, the second you hopped onto the ice in your heavy keeper equipment, you could hear their cheers and see the signs. It made you feel warm inside. You skated up to the barrier where Jessie was standing and out your glove on the glass and smiled at her. "Meet you after?" she asked you, loudly because of the music and the noise. "You bet," you answered.
"Good lucky my love," she told you, blowing you a kiss.
The game was heated, both teams wanted points from their first game right away, but you didn’t let a single goal in. It took a lot of screaming, orders and a few shoves and fights with the opposition, which Jessie hated, but you managed to get the 2-0 win.
After the game, you changed into jeans and a yellow graphic tee that was Jessie’s, as well as airforces and a black jean jacket. You lugged your equipment behind you and met Jessie outside the arena. She quickly pecked your lips, not big on the PDA but she did whisper a word of congratulations in your ear. You were quick to be bombarded by your girlfriends team though, hugs from Alyssa, Jordyn, Julia, Nichelle and Quinn, taps on the back from Sincy, Sophie and Sabrina and a loud scream from Kailen who then picked you up off the ground and swung you around in circles.
"Put her down Kailen!" Jessie squealed. You were taller than Jessie and pretty strong but Kailen was something else. "She’s fine Fleming," the keeper said, putting you down and smiling at you as you gained your bearings again. "Yeah, all good," you laughed. Kailen took your bag and walked towards your car, giving you the opportunity to swing an arm around Jessie’s shoulder as she put hers around your waist. You kissed the top of her head lovingly and told her you loved her as you walked towards the car.
Nothing felt better than being with your second family. Just being around the Canadian Women’s Soccer Team felt natural and easy.

Why the time still might not be right for England
Tumblr media
With the exception of my homelands and my childhood favorites (Brazil), I'm basically a neutral when it comes to international soccer. That is to say, there's no team I routinely support over others, though there are some teams for which I typically have a stronger affinity. The sources of these sympathies are sometimes deeply rooted in childhood memories, familial ties, or simply due to specific players I admire.
But I say I'm a neutral because these allegiances can be fleeting. For example, I had always been a fan of France (I am a francophile in just about all aspects of my life), but after they defeated Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final, my mood toward them soured. I have, at times, cheered on Italy (I had several family members who were fans of Italian football growing up), but in recent years have not found much to enjoy in their performances. I grew up not supporting Argentina because they were great rivals to Brazil, but I can't help but admire and support the play of Messi, Di Maria, and others. All this underscores the fickle nature of these faux-bonds to national identities that aren't my own.
For example, in the 2020 (well... 2021...) Euro finals, I was rooting for England. Although Italy were in the midst of a historic undefeated streak, I was swept up in the narrative of "football coming home." It did, after all, seem long overdue. A chance to win a trophy on home soil again seemed most apt, and ending Italy's unprecedented run would have been just the way to do it. But, alas, it was not to be.
My support for England would have likely come as a surprise to many in my family. My mother's generation grew up in the colonies and still harbor much ill will toward the former empire. And while my mother taught in England and has close, lifelong English friends, she would never cheer for them on the pitch. She still has negative memories of English hooliganism in the 1980s when she lived there. Those were the stories I grew up with as a child.
But as an adult, I've buried my face in English football most weekends, studying the ins and outs of the Premier League. I've followed English players as they move through the academies to clubs across Europe. In short, I feel more invested in English football than I do in any other European country's. And free of the colonial shackles that pester my forebears, my Canadian citizenship adds some validity to any rationale of support.
So RA RA for England! Let's go Three Lions! Football's coming home!
Except, this Sunday, I won't find myself rooting for England. Yes, I'll be cheering on La Roja, despite my typical support for England and despite the myriad reasons why an English victory would be so meaningful. Let's revisit a few of them...
Tumblr media
The Perennial Underperformers
England may be either the worst best team in football or the best worst team. By whatever metrics you choose, their record of success pales when compared to their historical expectations. Their only World Cup victory came in 1966 on home ground. Heavy favorites Brazil were eliminated in the group stage largely due to heavy fouling on Pelé, which led to injury. England's quarterfinal win over Argentina that year is mired in controversy. And home field advantage was probably a large factor in their wins over Eusébio's Portugal in the semis and the West Germans in the final. While the event remains a national moment of pride for Britons, not everyone views it fondly, especially South Americans who believed that the officiating in the tournament was biased toward Europeans.
Sticking to Europe, England have never won the Euros. In fact, their appearance in the 2020 final was the first time they had ever made it to the final. In the first 15 iterations of the tournament (1960-2016), England had reached the semifinals only twice. Now they've reached the finals twice in a row. As the nation that developed the game, and where the world's most esteemed league is stationed, it only makes sense that all roads lead to an England victory.
Tumblr media
Garreth Southgate
A lot's been said about Garreth Southgate's performance as England manager, but that's all par for the course. You can't take the helm of the Three Lions without being subject to intense scrutiny and near universal disapproval by literally millions of people who don't know nearly as much about football as you do. Still, Southgate has manned the ship for the past eight years, producing some of England's best and most consistent results.
In his first tournament as gaffer, he took England to the World Cup semifinals. While they finished 4th, it was their best showing since 1990, and only the third time in the country's history that they had reached the World Cup semifinals. (Let that sink in.)
Taking them to their first ever Euro final in 2021 was another monument. Losing in a penalty shootout was utter heartbreak. Southgate had missed the decisive penalty in the 1996 Euro semifinal versus Germany. A Euro victory in penalties would have been sweet poetry, but instead, the curse endured.
Tumblr media
Harry Kane
No one can deny that the England captain is one of the best footballers in the world. Not only is he an exquisite striker, but he excels at aspects of the game that other prolific strikers like Haaland and Lewandowski don't. The fact that he has never won a trophy for club or country to accompany the litany of individual awards and records he has accumulated is utterly unfair.
We all though that drought would come to an end in 2023-24 when Kane abandoned perennial flunks Tottenham Hotspur in favor of the one sure bet for a trophy every season — the mighty Bayern Munich. And despite another incredible individual season, Kane managed to find himself on a team that underwhelmed, finishing third in the Bundesliga, getting knocked out by a third-tier team in the Pokal, and losing the DFL-Supercup in a big way. Like Southgate, Kane must be cursed.
A win for England at the Euros, with Kane as captain, would mean redemption, validation, and immortality.
Tumblr media
Spain doesn't need it
Another strong emotional rationale for rooting for England has nothing to do with them, but rather that this Spanish team doesn't really need this trophy. There are no legends on the Spanish team who have so far been deprived of deserved silverware. Sure, Rodri has not won the Euros or World Cup, but he has won the Champions League and just about every other trophy in Europe. And the likes of Yamal, Williams, and Pedri will be superstars for years to come and have several other chances to win a major trophy.
But England doesn't deserve it
And yet, I'm still going to be rooting for Spain this Sunday. Why? It's simple.
Spain has been the best team of the tournament. I'm not just talking results — I'm talking performances. They have played consistently well. Most of the pundits were sleeping on this team prior to the start of the tournament, with some even suggesting they may finish third in their group. But the writing had been on the wall. This team had been performing extremely well for the past two years, including winning the Nations League and (excluding a 2-0 defeat to Scotland) breezing through Euro qualifying.
Not only has their record at Euro 2024 has been impressive, they've managed their victories against some of the world's best sides. They're the only team to have won all of their games, including wins against Germany (tournament hosts, ranked #16 in the world), Italy (#10), Croatia (#9), and France (#2). More than their victories, their play has been inspiring and invigorating. The consistently exceptional play of Lamine Yamal is no surprise to those of us who watched him in La Liga last season. The breakout play of Nico Williams at this tournament has been another great Spanish highlight, and the contributions of Dani Olmo have been extraordinary.
In contrast, England has played poorly all tournament. They've looked a shadow of what this collection of players should be. Their performances have drawn condemnation from pundits, fans, and former players and coaches. Their play has lacked creativity and fluidity. And these poor performances have not come at the hands of esteemed opposition. Their semifinal against the Netherlands (#7) was the first time they had played a team ranked higher than #19 in the entire tournament. Were it not for a few timely moments of brilliance by some of the world's footballing superstars, England would not have made it this far.
You could argue that England has spent their tournament building up to the final and can now give it their all. I suppose that is a valid argument, but it doesn't hold enough water for me. I will not be surprised if England wins on Sunday, nor will I be disappointed. In fact, I would probably be very happy for them. English football deserves a win for all the strides it has made these past few years.
But you simply can't argue that England deserves to win this tournament over Spain. La Roja have been the undisputed standouts of Euro 2024. Were England to emerge victorious, you'd have to think that all the valid criticisms about their play in the early rounds would merely fall to the wayside, and would that be okay? Maybe. But if I were to look back on an England Euro 2024 victory years later, I would only remember that it was undeserved and serendipitous, and it will be somewhat spoiled for me. I want an England victory that feels deserved. I'm not saying easy — just deserved — hard-fought, well-played, spirited, and memorable. That can't happen this year.
But if not this year, then when?

"PREMIER AGAINST DEMONSTRATIONS," Montreal Star. July 10, 1934. Page 3. ---- Labor Delegates Confer With Taschereau on Conditions of Work ---- Premier Taschereau will encourage organization of labor and even approve of strikes in certain instances, but he will not stand for foreign propaganda, detrimental to Canadian industry. He is firmly opposed to all agitation or demonstrations. This was what he told a delegation of the Canadian Labor Defence League at local provincial offices today.
Accompanied by Hon. C. J. Arcand, Minister of Labor, the delegation complained of treatment received by strikers in the Northern mining district of the Province of Quebec, demanded fair wages for employes of all industries and protested against the allegedly unfair trials undergone by certain strikers in certain Quebec courts. To this Premier Taschereau said that he would do his duty to the finish and would not tolerate members of the provincial police being called "thugs."
LASTS ONE HOUR The discussion lasted fully one hour, but not to the entire satisfaction of the delegation, as Premier Taschereau recommended that labor organizations confer with Mr. Arcand so that minimum wage sales be observed and demonstrations and agitation be completely avoided. He abruptly left his offices for an unknown destination compelling delegations from Les Propriétaires de l'Est and La Jeunesse Libérale to return tomorrow to make their quests.
Premier Taschereau was informed that deplorable hygienic conditions prevailed in the mines, with the result that after a stay of five or six years, underground workers were totally incapacitated. He was told that in view of present low wages, men went on strike and picketed, since there is no law against this. But they were arrested and some of them have been waiting for trial for some time. These conditions. were very unjust, the delegation contended.
NO AGITATIONS. The delegation also protested against Premier Taschereau's statements to the effect that he would not stand for the agitation or propaganda on the part of foreigners. It was stated that at one of the strikes the majority were French-Canadians, to which the Premier replied that they were misinformed and that out of 34 strikers, 33 were foreigners. But it was not so much this point to which he referred when he attacked foreign propaganda. What he meant. he stressed, was that he would firmly oppose and energetically fight propaganda by foreigners who were seeking to close down Canadian mills so that less competition would be given to American concerns.
SIX CENTS AN HOUR. The discussion then pivotted about certain industries which paid wages. as low as six cents an hour. The Province of Quebec wage scales are the lowest and adequate legislation should be enacted to do away with such conditions, the delegates claimed. Premier Taschereau, in referring to conditions at the mines, said he thought things were just the opposite, as he had recently visited the mines and investigated conditions.
Mr. Arcand said he favored decent wages in all branches of industry. but thought it ridiculous that a strike should be called for a difference of less than two cents an hour. "So far as conditions in mines are concerned. I have much more experience than many persons may think. I was underground for six years and we were often brought out unconscious in those days. Yet. I am still living in good health," he stated.
INTERVIEW CLOSES. Concluding the interview, Premier Taschereau said that he would not be dictated to by foreigners and would not stand for any agitations. He advised the delegation to confer with Mr. Arcand on the matter. He added that he had been the recipient. of many insulting communications from as far as British Columbia, but thought it better to throw these letters into the wastepaper basket where they belonged. Other provinces had sufficient difficulties with- out seeking to solve those of Quebec.

NHL to air alternate Stanley Cup Final broadcast for Deaf community
By William Douglas
The NHL and P-X-P will produce the first-of-its kind alternate broadcast of the Stanley Cup Final in American Sign Language for the Deaf community.
“NHL in ASL” will be available on the digital platforms of ESPN+ and Canada’s Sportsnet+ and feature Deaf broadcasters providing real-time play-by-play coverage and color commentary during each game of the best-of-7 Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers. Game 1 is Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
It’s the latest collaboration between the NHL and P-X-P, which has provided ASL interpretation for signature events like the Winter Classic, Heritage Classic, NHL All-Star Weekend and Stadium Series, and Commissioner Gary Bettman’s State of the League address.
“Our continued partnership with P-X-P allows the NHL to do something no other professional sports league has done before: provide a fully immersive, unique, and accessible viewing experience that specifically meet the needs of the Deaf community,” said Kim Davis, NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Social Impact, Growth Initiatives and Legislative Affairs. “This NHL-led production further exemplifies the League’s commitment to producing accessible and interactive content for all of our fans -- including underserved communities. Fans of all abilities are encouraged to tune in to experience this first-of-a-kind broadcast as a way to understand and share the experience with someone who is Deaf.”
Steve Mayer, NHL Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, said the broadcast won’t be the traditional play-by-play and color commentary, “but rather something more conversational and relaxed in nature providing a deeper layer of additional storytelling.”
“The first-of-its kind production is something we hope and plan to expand on beyond the Stanley Cup Final and into the 2024-25 season,” Mayer said.
“NHL in ASL” will feature Jason Altmann, P-X-P’s chief operating officer who is third-generation Deaf, and Noah Blankenship, who currently works in the Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services in the Agency for Human Rights and Community Partnerships under the city and county of Denver.
Altmann and Blankenship will provide ASL descriptions of major plays, like goals and hits, as well as referee calls and rule explanations to clarify decisions made on the ice.
Graphic visualizations will include a large, metered, real-time bar that demonstrates crowd noise levels to viewers, specifically around certain events like goals and penalties. Also included will be custom visual emotes to depict goals, penalties, the intensity of hits, and whether the puck hits the post/crossbar.
“The opportunity to do a Deaf-centric broadcast of a premier sporting event in ASL is a positive, seismic change for the Deaf community,” Altmann said. “As a sports fan growing up, I couldn’t relate with the broadcasters because some elements were not well captured with closed captioning. Now, we are creating an opportunity for Deaf sports fans and viewers to watch Deaf broadcasters and fell engaged through ASL.”
Brice Christianson, P-X-P’s founder and CEO, said “NHL in ASL” is a dream come true for the Deaf community who watch sports.
About 30 million Americans over age 12 have hearing loss in both ears and about two to three out of every 1,000 children in the U.S. are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears, according to the National Institutes on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. There’s an estimated 357,000 people in Canada who are culturally Deaf and 3.21 million who are hard of hearing, according to the Canadian Association for the Deaf.
“It gives the Deaf community the belief that accessibility and inclusion and representation is possible in professional sports,” Christianson said of the broadcast. “Accessibility, inclusion and representation is something that the Deaf and hard of hearing community don’t get consistently, and what we’ve been doing with the NHL over time is building it.
“Now we’re excited to kick the door open and build off it.”

The Connecticut Whale is a professional hockey team that plays within the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF; formerly known as the National Women’s Hockey League, or NWHL). Celebrating Jonathan Frid
Jonathan Frid (December 2, 1924 – April 14, 2012) was a Canadian actor, best known for his role as vampire Barnabas Collins on the gothic television soap opera Dark Shadows.
Frid was born of Scottish and English ancestry in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His birth name was John Herbert Frid. He was the youngest son of homemaker Isabel Flora (née McGregor) and Herbert Percival "H.P." Frid, a construction executive.
Frid served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. He graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton in 1948, and the following year was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. He moved to the United States in 1954, and received a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Directing from the Yale School of Drama in 1957. As a student at Yale in 1956, he starred in the premiere of William Snyder's play A True and Special Friend. He went on to star in the first productions at the Williamstown Theater in Williamstown, Massachusetts and stage productions in Canada, England and the United States.
Tumblr media
He began using the stage name Jonathan Frid (rather than John Frid) in 1962, and made his Broadway debut as an understudy in the 1964 play Roar Like a Dove.
Early television roles with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation included parts in Julius Caesar, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Our Town, and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Tumblr media
Frid is widely known for the role of vampire Barnabas Collins in the original gothic serial Dark Shadows, which ran from 1966-71 and in which he appeared in 594 episodes. He also starred as Barnabas in the 1970 movie House of Dark Shadows. In 1967, Frid had made plans to move to the U.S. West Coast to pursue a career as an acting teacher when he won the role that ultimately made him a household name. As Frid explained on his Web site, he had barely entered his apartment as the phone call from his agent came informing him that he had won the role of Barnabas Collins. He agreed to accept it after being told it was a short-term one that would provide him with extra cash while he prepared to move. As the character's popularity soared, Frid scrapped those plans.
Tumblr media
After Dark Shadows ended in 1971, he returned to performing in live theatre full-time with starring roles in the Broadway plays Murder in the Cathedral as Thomas Becket and Wait Until Dark as Harry Roat. Frid had previously played the role of a psychiatrist on the CBS Television soap opera As the World Turns. In 1973, Frid appeared in the TV movie The Devil's Daughter, starring Shelley Winters, and the following year starred in Oliver Stone's directorial debut, Seizure. In 1978, he returned to Canada for a time and later returned to New York City in the early 1980s.
Tumblr media
In December 1986, Frid joined the Broadway cast of Arsenic and Old Lace co-starring with Jean Stapleton, and subsequently spent over a year with the show on the road. Earlier in 1986, he formed his own production company, Clunes Associates, with producer Mary O’Leary to tour universities and performing arts centers in a series of readers' theatre entertainments, principally Fools & Fiends, Shakespearean Odyssey and Fridiculousness. "Frid makes the tales live with the wonderful instrument of his voice and his zest for entertaining" went one of his noteworthy reviews.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frid retired to his native Canada in 1994. From time to time he would perform his one-man shows for charitable and fundraising events.  In June 2000, he returned to the professional stage in a limited engagement of the play Mass Appeal, first in Hamilton, then at the Stirling Festival Theatre in Stirling, Ontario.
Tumblr media
In 2010, he returned to the role of Barnabas Collins for the first time in 39 years in a Dark Shadows audio drama, Night Whispers. The following year along with his former Dark Shadows co-stars David Selby, Lara Parker and Kathryn Leigh Scott, he filmed a cameo appearance for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows film, which became his final film appearance. Just a few weeks prior to the film release Frid died at the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton on April 14, 2012 following a fall at the age of 87.
