Cancer Screening: Types, Tests & Guidelines Explained
Cancer screening is a crucial aspect of maintaining your health, offering the best chance of early detection and successful treatment. Understanding the available screening tests and guidelines can empower you to take control of your well-being.
Here’s a brief overview:
1. Mammography: Recommended for women over 40, mammograms are key in detecting breast cancer early. Regular screenings can identify abnormalities when they’re most treatable, potentially saving lives.
2. Pap Smear (Pap Test): Pap smears are vital for cervical cancer screening, starting at age 21. By detecting precancerous changes, Pap tests enable early intervention, reducing the risk of cervical cancer.
3. Colonoscopy: Colonoscopies are essential for detecting colorectal cancer. Starting at age 50, these screenings can find polyps or tumors in the colon, leading to timely treatment and improved outcomes.
4. PSA Test: While controversial, PSA tests can help detect prostate cancer in men aged 55 to 69. It’s crucial to discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor to make an informed decision.
5. Lung Cancer Screening: For individuals at high risk, low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer early. Current or former smokers aged 55 to 80 should consider this screening option.
Guidelines and Recommendations:
Organizations like the American Cancer Society and the US Preventive Services Task Force offer valuable guidelines for cancer screening. These guidelines consider age, gender, and individual risk factors to provide personalized recommendations.
Conclusion:
Cancer screening is a proactive step towards safeguarding your health. By staying informed about available tests and following recommended guidelines, you can increase the likelihood of early detection and successful treatment. Remember to consult with your healthcare provider to develop a screening plan tailored to your needs and risk factors. Early detection saves lives.

btw while I’m still being annoying, my favorite example to bring up in the “hygiene products that you can just pick up off the shelf at the store can have KNOWN carcinogens in them” conversation is coal tar. This one’s still crazy to me. It’s used in anti-dandruff products for its “anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties" but it’s also LIKE. a hazardous substance... but it can still go in your shampoo bc “aww but it’s only SOME poison, it’s not like, a LOT of poison, so we can still sell it and it’s ok”

Ridley Scott: I made a film about two rival officers constantly duelling throughout and in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, and now I've actually done a film about Napoleon!
Me: Great! Could you also do a film about Baron Dominique Jean Larrey, a vital innovator in European battlefield surgery and triage, often considered the first military surgeon; who pioneered the ambulance volantes ("Flying ambulances") to quickly transport wounded men from the battlefield, effectively creating a forerunner of the modern MASH units; co-led the team that performed one of the first accurately recorded pre-anaesthetic mastectomies in Western medicine; was spotted helping wounded men while under heavy fire during the Battle of Waterloo by the Duke of Wellington who purposefully ordered for his soldiers not to fire in Larrey's direction; and when captured by the Prussians after the battle was about to be executed on the spot when he was recognised by one of the German surgeons, who pled for his life because he had saved the life of Field Marshall Blücher's son some years earlier?
Ridley Scott:
Ridley Scott: Um.
Me: Yeah. Didn't think so.

The Lifesaving Power of Cancer Screening Checkups
Introduction:
Cancer often develops silently, but early detection can be a game-changer. Regular cancer screening checkups are our frontline defense, catching cancer when it’s most treatable. Let’s explore why these checkups matter.
Why Regular Screening Is Crucial:
Routine screenings detect cancer before symptoms appear, improving treatment outcomes. Tests like mammograms and colonoscopies identify abnormalities early, giving patients better chances of beating cancer.
Empowering Through Knowledge:
Screening not only detects cancer but also empowers individuals with vital health information. Knowing your risk factors and getting screened regularly can save lives.
Reducing Mortality Rates:
Studies show that early detection through screening significantly reduces cancer mortality rates. By promoting widespread screening, we can save more lives.
Overcoming Barriers:
Barriers like lack of awareness and financial constraints prevent some from getting screened. We must address these barriers through education, outreach, and improved access to screening services.
Conclusion:
Cancer screening checkups are essential for early detection and saving lives. By prioritizing screenings and breaking down barriers to access, we can make significant strides in the fight against cancer.

Nothing makes me more sad than watching the beautiful perfect most wonderful kitty who helped me survive many ordeals decline so much. She seems happy still, but my heart aches knowing she will not here me sing her name again, that she can't see the smiles she puts on my face. Does she know it's me letting her just the way she likes? (Just under her neck above her legs). Does she ever get confused trying to find my bed that she hasn't been able to reach? (she can't go down the stairs)
I love her much, she seems happy and fulfilled but I'm selfish and I wonder if she knows I'm here with her like she always has been for me.

Olli hasn’t been right for weeks now. I spent 700 dollars at the vet on him a little while ago and he seemed fine but now I know he doesn’t feel good but I don’t know if it’s something bigger connected to that or if he just has a stomach ache. Ate his dinner but didn’t eat his good night snack and he NEVER refuses food.

my mom died a year ago
#grief#technically I’m about 4 hours early from the exact tod but yeah#i was probably up til 3:30 or so that night#I could double check bc i wrote a journal entry that night when i couldn’t fall asleep#it’s been 365 really busy days but shit right now it feels like no time has passed at all#but shoutout to palliative care nurses everywhere#and mad props to the oncologists doing bonkers scifi treatments and trials#keep up the good work#mom’s final cancer was a hell of an eldrich beast but medicine keeps developing#and bringing on night nurses for those last three nights of hospice was such a help and a comfort I don’t think I have words for#someone asked me earlier in the afternoon if i was through it having been a year and all#and i straight up said No I Am Still In The Thick Of It#my cousin (who lost her dad/my uncle 8ish years prior) said at the funeral reception “it doesn’t get better”#and she was right#it doesn’t get any better at all#you just get used to it#the lack of that person becomes familiar#even though your connection to them still feels active#like a phantom limb#it still feels horribly horrendously wrong that she’s gone#the world is certainly poorer in her absence#if I could offer any advice for anyone it would be to talk to your loved one(s) about this all ahead of time#don’t wait til they get sick don’t wait til they get old or whatever#start talking through it now#(certainly legally but also logistically)#unfortunately it’s a certainty that you will lose the person most important to you#or they will lose you#so don’t hide from it or put it off. it’s part of any relationship. it’s there and no one can escape it.#but yeah#right now this hurts

#so i got a message from my sister telling me something rather tragic had happened in our family#on my mom's side. one of my aunties passed away&my little sister let me know.#she also let me know that my mother is taking it really hard&shed probably really like to hear from me.#&its weird bc any sadness i felt about my aunty dying almost completely evaporated upon it becoming a way to guilt me#into talking to my mother-- like i was not almost dead for a long LONG time&she was actively disowning me bc i wasnt sick the right way#after a lifetime of refusing to believe i was sick AT ALL which directly lead to developing cancer she screamed at me in public#that i was lying about before pretending to drive off a cliff&then refusing to pick up her phone until she called me an hour later#after i had been calling not just her but anyone in our family who could possibly check on her to tell me that i never loved her#&i wouldnt have cared if she died&it would have been my fault.#so like. i dont really give a fuck if shes taking a death in the family poorly? like i dont actually fucking care that this-- like literally#everything else-- needs to center my mother's bad feelings. i just fucking dont lmao.#&im really fucking pissed off that i now have to feel like shit bc i dont feel like i properly feel bad#about my family member dying bc IT BECAME ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER IMMEDIATELY.#i do not fucking UNDERSTAND.#i cannot even put into words how this all makes me feel lmao. why. literally fucking why.#the cherry on top? my aunty died of gastric issues. you know. the family curse that i def didnt get so i got to work thru it all#while being called a liar. you know the type of illness that almost killed ME. that might STILL kill me.#but yeah my mom is sad so i should call&make sure to hold her hand like i always fucking did lets just forget an entire lifetime#&esp the last five years thatll be totally cool.#a tragedy happened in the family so fuck all MY tragedies actually i guess.

said a prayer for Jjong today.
#shinee#jonghyun#idk i don't usually yk. do things like that for people that have passed but it's been six years and it felt fitting somehow#six years ago i was what. 12 about to turn 13???? had already been to a fair bit of funerals but the only ones that had hit me before#this one were the pianist at our church who passed away suddenly from a heart attack and the regional club leader who had cancer#for like three years and passed just as the doctors thought she would go into remission#and those both happened around October/November so. going into the winter season has always been hard for me and Jjong#was no different.#it's gotten better slowly but it still hurts sometimes. some days i wake up and i can't even look at any of his pictures other days#i get up and put his albums on loop and laugh and reblog so many of his antics#it's funny bc when my aunt passed on New Year's in 2019 it was exactly two weeks after the 1st anniversary date rolled around. always has#been but i never noticed until we lost her and we had to go down for the funeral and i basically disappeared off the internet for a good#two to four months sans queue and checking in on Discord and sh*t and that year he managed to keep me sane. sounds f*cked up#but that year it was just me and Spotify and my playlists and Jjong's voice amid it all. i wish i could meet him and tell him in person#that he practically saved my life even tho the fandom was still raw af from losing him but the prayer will have to be enough#you did well Jjong. you worked so hard. you are our pride. love you to the moon and back 🌒🌙 <333
