"She's great. I can honestly say that she is the most talented leading lady I have ever worked with. We just finished shooting the ballet episode, and we sort of had to do a love scene together. It was pretty funny, because Charisma is extremely ticklish, especially on her stomach, so when I had to go down, kind of made her laugh. I would start laughing, and then Joss would get so upset and start telling us that if we don't get this done he will fire us both, but she kept laughing, so finally I just said screw it and gave her a raspberry, right there. We took a break after that because both of us couldn't stop laughing."

Everything about season 4 of Angel is repugnant. I can’t even talk about it.

Happy continued recovery!! Brutally honest asks for: Cangel, Fred x Willow, and Faith x Gunn.
1) A gorgeous, well written relationship that was built up very clearly and deliberately through seasons 1, 2 and 3, and then shat on in S4. I don't even mean the Connor/Jasmine/Beast stuff - the romantic moments between Angel and Cordelia that are in that season are all painfully generic and clearly written by someone who doesn't know or care about what was appealing about Cangel in the first place.
2) I kinda dig it - partially because Fred is clearly Willow's type, and partially because I like that they're both legitimately capable of murder.
3) I think Gunn would be the only member of AI that Faith would genuinely really like, and Gunn would be the only member of AI that would genuinely really like Faith.

Angel: "What?"
Cordy: "What?"
Angel: "What do you want to say?"
Cordy: "Ah, me? Nothing. What makes you think I wanna..."
Angel: "'Cause I know you.”
Cordy: "Well, it's really… none of my business."
Angel: "And that always stops you?”
Cordy: “Actually, it is my business, *our* business, because we're trying to do a job here, and what affects you affects me, and anyway, I don't like to see you suffer more than you have to. I don't think you should blame yourself, or feel guilty for her death."
Angel: "I don't."
Cordy: "Good. Glad to hear it."
Angel: "I didn't even know who she was when I killed her."
Cordy: "Not her! Angel..."
Angel:
*After a beat*
“Oh... you… you want to talk about..."
Cordy: "She was the love of your life and she died.
*Angel sits down on the stairs, facing Cordy*
*Steps closer*
And you weren't there when it happened.
*Sits down next to him with a sigh*
You couldn't help her fight. You couldn't save her. You couldn't die with her."
*Angel doesn’t answer*
—————————————————————————
Cordy: "And how about you?"
Angel: "I'm o..."
Cordy: "And don't say 'okay.' Angel, please. I know you. Ever since you've come back from your grief trip I can tell that something's not right. And, and *obviously* it's not. Buffy's dead, and I don't mean to diminish that. I miss her too. I just wanna say… I know that James with all his Romeo and Juliet madness, opened up a lot of wounds for you, but you'll be okay."
Angel: "I am okay."
Cordy: "Then what's the problem?"
Angel: "That I'm okay. That losing Buffy didn't kill me. That I could deal with it. In all those years no one ever mattered. Not like she did. And now she's gone. Forever.”
Cordy: "And you're still here."
Angel: "Yeah. I just feel like I'm betraying her somehow."
Cordy: "No! If you were a loser, if you were some sick obsessed vampire, you'd go to a Snod demon, or whatever, and get your heart cut out. But you're not! You're a living, breathing... Well, living, anyway, good guy, whose still fighting and trying to help people, and that's not betraying her, that's honoring her."
Angel: "You think?"
Cordy: "I'm Cordelia. I don't think. I know. Okay?"
*Cordy gives him a big grin, which draws a small smile in response*
Angel: "Okay."
So I’m on to Season 3 of ‘Angel the Series’ and this first episode was dealing with the aftermath of Buffy’s death in Season 5 of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’. How it affects Angel and specifically how he keeps the grief of his loss to himself but Cordy can see through him.
But listen - Everything I’ve just quoted above showcases how much better of a relationship Angel has with Cordy over what he ever had with Buffy. All of THIS is what a RELATIONSHIP is. The way they just know each other that they can’t lie to one another. The way Cordy draws information out of Angel like no one else can and is so perceptive in figuring him out. The way he opens up to her with a minimum amount of prodding from her. The brick wall of non-communication that was Bangel is nowhere to be seen in Cangel. This entire conversation is about Buffy specifically and what Buffy means to Angel. Yet through it I can see that were it in reverse and it was Cordy that died and it was Buffy giving this speech….
There would honestly be nowhere near the breakthrough on revealing Angel’s emotions because they’re both one in the same when it comes to communication. They both hide away from each other in moments of being in need of someone to talk to. Maybe it’s just because they have more time and purpose to do significant character interaction in Angel’s own show when it comes to drawing out information from Angel’s psyche, but I just see so much more between Angel and Cordy - just friends - then I ever saw between apparent “love of their lives” Angel and Buffy. This level of intimate relation to one another is on the level of Spuffy or Tillow. This is what you’re supposed to have in a relationship where the people in it are actual partners. Honest and open communication. Buffy and Angel never had this… really ever. I mean I brought up the interaction and conversation they had in ‘Forever’ as the only time where I truly saw Bangel as genuinely relating to one another and this was well passed their heydays.
I really love what I’m seeing in this dynamic. This is what makes Angel - the character and the show - interesting to watch. He finally has someone who KNOWS him to the point where he cannot always brood away in silence and pretend like no one cares. Because that’s not interesting to watch. It’s just sad. Thank fuck Cordelia is in this show as a main character because not only is she better for it. But she makes HIM better for it as well! That’s precisely what was needed for either of them to be considered even half as interesting of a character to me as Willow or Spike. And okay - there’s still a lot to live up to there. But it’s a start! This is what I wanted to see in Bangel but I never could because they were so incompatible when it came to being each other’s sounding board. It was like they were trying but they were never breaking through that communication barrier between them so as much of a whirlwind romance that they had - that was written… there was just nothing holding it up other than all the physical intimacy that they shared. And that’s just shallow. There was no depth to it. Not like there is with Cangel. With what I can see in them.

Why don’t you like cangel? It’s so much better than bangel
Hard disagree, Nonnie!
Bangel is a very organic ship which is built up naturally (albeit a little rushed in Season 1, however, this was due to not knowing if the show would be renewed) between two characters with amazing romantic and physical chemistry. It's deep and rich and it evolves over time. There is tragedy and darkness to it, but also incredible light and passion and they both inspire one another and understand each other so well.
Meanwhile Cangel is a ship that literally comes out of nowhere, between two characters who, yes, clearly care about one another but had zero romantic feelings for one another until the narrative suddenly decided that they did. There was no build up, everything was tell instead of show (kyrumption???) and, I'm sorry, but David and Charisma have next to no romantic or physical chemistry and watching them make out is so uncomfortable.
Not to mention Cangel is basically written as Bangel 2.0. Two warriors who fight side by side? Bangel did it first. Synchronised training sessions? Bangel in Revelations. Possessed by ghost lovers? Bangel in IOHEFY. One of them goes evil and the other has to kill them? Bangel Season 2. Hell, Cordelia even went blonde at the end of Season 3 which is when the ship is pushed the most!
I absolutely adore Cordelia and Angel as friends. They had great chemistry as friends, they played off one another well and the way they just didn't understand one another but kept trying to was so sweet and endearing! But as a romantic ship? It just doesn't work and pales in comparison to Bangel.

Steroline and Cangel should have remained friends (even though I seen the Cangel friendship as forced since they hardly interacted on BtVS and Cordelia still had trust issues due to the Angelus S2 period) since they function better as friends than lovers. Caroline would be #2 to Stefan while Cordelia would be #3 to Angel since Buffy is #1 because duh and Darla #2 because of Connor. Caroline and Cordelia deserve better. Plus Angel left Buffy for reasons, which kills the whole Cordy&Angel were meant to be narrative in AtS Season 3. It makes it insensitive since Buffy was brought back from the dead against her will.

What made you ship it?
I shipped them from BtVS (specifically 2x6 Halloween) because Angel LAUGHED, y'all. I love Cordelia and did pretty early on but I wasn't super interested in Angel until we started to see this other side of him, and Cordelia was a big part of that. Then on AtS they formed this really beautiful friendship and I'm such a sucker for friends to lovers so I started shipping it more seriously.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
(idk why the numbering got messed up whatever) I love how they're really friends first, which means a lot of things. It means they make each other laugh. They call each other on their shit. They've seen the good and the bad, they really know each other and they love each other not despite that but because of it! they're teammates and co-parents and both just gigantic dorks who make each other better.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
hmm I haven't been in Cangel-y circles of late but I do have a lot of thoughts and feelings since I'm rewatching. I know a lot of people who don't necessarily ship it feel that it comes on a bit suddenly in season 3 and I will agree with that a little, especially considering there's no offscreen time with them in between seasons 2 & 3 since Angel is away mourning Buffy. It doesn't especially bug me because I think the realization of feelings is much slower and more organic, but trying to watch it with fresh eyes I agree it feels a little odd there.
um...otherwise, I guess I don't feel like Angel's behavior in S5 is too contradictory with his feelings for Cordelia, at least from my last-watch memory (not there yet). I think it's been part of his character development to learn to move on a bit more and not beat himself up for it like he did when first moving on from Buffy, and I think it's healthy and fine for him to date someone less seriously. way more healthy than most of what he does that season tbh. I don't love what we see in his BtVS crossover at the end of season 7, although we'll see how I feel about it on rewatch. ugh. now I'm just angry about what could have been with Cangel again. not unpopular opinion: we were robbed.

Hi Monica! Love that you have the same name as one of my favorite sitcom characters :) I was curious how you'd rank the BtVS seasons and the AtS seasons from the one you love most to the one like you like least? For BtVS, I think I'd go S2, S3, S1, S4, S6, S5, S7 (so validating that you and one of your anons dislike season 5 too!) For AtS: S1, S2, S3, S5 and S4. Those are just my preferences, but obviously even the seasons I'm less enamored with have a few great episodes!
Hi! A lot of my anons like Friends! It's a very popular show, haha.
BtVS:
Season 2: To me, this is the best season. It has the best villain, not because Angelus is like super deep and interesting but because the conflict between him and Buffy and how Buffy is transformed is so good. Angelus made BtVS what it is. The season also has so many amazing episodes, the characters and ships are great, and even the filler episodes have their charm.
Season 3: I think this season is quite overrated tbh. I don't find Faith interesting and The Mayor is fun but not a compelling villain. Thematically, it's much weaker than season 2. Still, it has lots of standout episodes. It's just kind of shallow? Imo. Also, doesn't feel very cohesive.
Season 1: Love this season. Lots of great episodes, so charming and fun. In a way, I think it's deeper than most of season 3.
Season 6: It has lots of ups and downs, but it does have some strong episodes and themes. It's not boring anyway.
Season 4: It has some great episodes, but it's poorly executed. It's hard to embrace the new setting and it's hard to connect with the characters who feel like strangers to me.
Season 5: In theory, it should be a great season, but it's so boring and depressing most of the time. The characters don't get along much, Glory is annoying, the stuff with Riley is blah. I can't even remember most of the episodes because they just run together.
Season 7: Truly a shit season, but it doesn't start off bad.
Our ranking is the same except you prefer season 4 to season 6!
AtS:
Season 2: Absolute masterpiece up until, and including, Epiphany. Watching Angel's dizzying downward spiral for the first time was the most thrilling and satisfying experience I've had as a viewer, like, ever, and I'd give anything to feel that high again. I felt that shit in my soul. No show has ever topped it for me. Angel was so relatable, there was no one I understood better. Too bad the writers massively fucked it all up with the abrupt shift in tone after Epiphany. That's when season 3 unofficially starts to me.
Season 1: So many amazing episodes, especially the flashback episodes or the episodes that dealt with Angel's past, plus IWRY and the Faith episodes, of course. I love Wesley and Cordelia's relationship, and Doyle was great too.
Season 4: An absolute mess, but conceptually and thematically so interesting. It has so many brilliant episodes and arcs. It's really a masterpiece with a side of shit soap opera. Honestly, it's pretty much tied with season 1 to me. It's cohesive and accomplishes a lot more than season 1 even though it's maybe less rewatchable.
Season 5: Doesn't feel like an Angel season at all. Give me back Tim Minear, and get rid of the BtVS writers and Spike and Andrew, please. Still, Wesley's arc and Illyria are genial and Not Fade Away is the best finale I've watched. Shout-out to Origin as well - I love that episode to bits.
Season 3: The Darla, Dark!Wesley and teenage Connor arcs are great, amazing even, but everything else is crap. Angel's a moron half the time, Cordelia isn't Cordelia and some episodes are yikes.
I see our Angel ranking is very different! We only have season 5 in common. Are you a Cangel fan? Or a big Cordelia fan? Since you like season 3, and season 4 not as much?
Thanks for the ask!
